We recently got our hands on the Japan exclusive Pocketstation (1999) for the original Playstation. It's a funky little peripheral reminiscent of the VMU for the Dreamcast. It not only acts as a regular memory card, but also lets you download additional mini-games from compatible software. A definite must have for any avid PS1 fan.
Despite being released so close to the Playstation 2 there are surprisingly many games supporting the little thing. Among them we find the excellent puzzle game Puyo Puyo 4 and another elusive title in the Jumping Flash! series, Pocket MuuMuu. More noteworthy perhaps is that both Japanese versions of Spyro the Dragon and Spyro 2, as well as Crash Bandicoot 3, all have Pocketstation mini-games that we never got to see over here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interestingly the western releases of Final Fantasy VIII (1999) still has the Pocketstation support intact. There is even an entire section in the manual, spanning several pages, but also notifies players that the device may in fact only be available in Japan. Despite the Pocketstation never coming here you can absolutely access the Chocobo World mini-game from a PAL/American copy of the game. If you happen to have a Pocketstation that is. How curious.

Ever since I met you.
…Hello world! Lmao
Hi, I'm Natsumi, and I'm wondering who is even reading this but if you are, welcome to a very long post about how I got into Tears of Themis, how it helped me through such a hard time, and how I ended up falling in love with a certain detective.
I made this post for an event on hoyolab but I’m posting it here too in my trashcan! I already wanted to have a post documenting this online just for myself, even if in the future I cringe while reading it, I can look back and remember the emotions I felt through the year. I also wanted to share it with the world so that maybe people will feel like me, or come to appreciate this character that I love so much as much as I do. (you’re free to reblog btw!)
Warning: This post is mostly about Luke!
It contains spoilers about some Luke cards and some spoilers for his Blossom Chapter. There are small scenes from episodes 2 and 5 of main story as well. Oh, and Artem and Luke 2nd anniversary cards.
If you are here because you’re interested in learning or reading more about Luke and do not care much for the rest, I recommend the interlude, part 6, and The end: part 1. The other parts also talk about Luke and his stories but those are the most important in my opinion.
Due to Tumblr’s 30 image per post limit, this will be divided into 3 parts, each part added with a reblog.
______________________________
Index because this post ended up incredibly long so here are the parts laid out to read anything you’re interested in!
> Part 1: Introduction
(How did I learn about this game?)
> Part 2: Contact
(Getting the game)
> Part 3: The Beginning
(Starting the game and first impressions lol)
> Part 4: Falling
(FOR LUKE AHAH)
> Interlude: Luke Pearce’s Fear
> Part 5: Obsession
(How and why did this obsession start?)
> Part 6: Reflection
(Thinking back on Luke’s personality that attracted me)
> The end: Memories
(Extra memorable moments)
______________________________
Part 1: Introduction
I play Genshin (shocker) and I have some online friends who play it as well, so when Tears of Themis came out globally since it's made by Hoyoverse as well, most people who played genshin went to check it out. I discovered Tears of Themis through those people, and I was recommended the game by my online friends.
What was my response?
“I have no phone storage.” AAHAHAH, yes. I'm not a day one player. I only started during the second anniversary because back when the game came out despite being interested I could not play because I did not have any device that could handle the game. My phone could not handle Genshin's size either, it's not compatible to begin with- I played Genshin on the PlayStation [emoji]
However I did not forget about the game, I was just hoping that somehow one day, a miracle will happen and I will be able to play mobile games like other people LOL but what are the odds of that happening?... Well, a miracle happened 2 years later.
Bonus: I had a little beef at the time with Artem because I kept thinking drawings of him were actually of Jumin who is a very well written character I love like crazy from mystic messenger since 2016 BWAHAHA
Tumblr media
Every masterpiece.. has its cheap copy.. IM JKJK PUT THAT KNIFE DOWN AHAHA
______________________________
Part 2: Contact
So one day I was visiting my aunt's house and met my cousin's acquaintance. I met the guy for like.. only 2 hours and during those hours my cousin told him about how I draw digitally but I have been drawing on an 8 year old phone that stays alive for like 30 mins at a time AHHAHA
The guy was like “That's it, I'm getting you an iPad to draw on.” I laughed, thinking he was joking- but then 2 days later I received TWO iPads, one for me and one for my little sister! W t f. Angels do exist on earth? And I was never able to thank him in person because he's a busy guy who only visited my village and I never saw him again o.o
Can you guess what I started doing when I got it? Download a bunch of games I wanted to try throughout the years but couldn't! Among them was Tears of Themis. My house didn't have the best Internet and had a couple hours of electricity a day so I downloaded it very slowly at my aunt's house.
I remember so clearly about how I sat next to my sister as I was downloading the game, and it started playing the second anniversary promotion video since it was starting during that time. At first I was like “aww, they proposing!” but suddenly things turned spicy and I almost dropped the iPad from my hand HAHA.
I did not know what to expect going into this game because I stayed away from spoilers and videos about it since I knew I wanted to get into it myself one day (I was interested in the main story). It made me sad too to be honest because I wanted to play it but couldn't, so I avoided it for years.
I however, did not expect at all that the game would get THAT spicy LMAO my sister noticed my reaction and she was like “What's up?” And I was like “you cannot see this” though she is older than the game’s age rating AHAHHA
______________________________
Part 3: The beginning
I was so excited getting into this game! When I started I was incredibly hooked to the main story, and at the time.. hear this.. I had a bias towards Artem because he looked like Jumin AHAHA
I was honestly more interested though in the main story than the boys, because the boys didn't make me feel much at the time- I do not have a “love at first sight” I never had that kind of experience for real life people or fictional people. (Anyone can experience it, and that's valid! It's just for me personally that never happens.)
After knowing characters and learning more about them, that's when sometimes- I fall in love with them as a character, they end up giving me so much happiness just seeing them, they give me comfort.. And they fill up my sketchbooks HAHA is this love romantic? Usually no, that's very rare!
I did not feel much for Artem (turns out the only thing he and Jumin have in common were their looks and being socially awkward, shocker-) but I had a little interest that led to me pulling for his second anniversary card when I started being able to wish. I lost- and got a standard Artem, but then I won and got his card LMAO you can get a lot of wishes starting off. However I was doing the stories of the standard SRs, along with the main story and someone.. someone was warming up a lot to my heart.
______________________________
Part 4: Falling
The boys were all very interesting and lovely characters! (The NPCs as well!!)
Artem, despite how he comes off at work, is actually just a shy guy who is bad at communication outside of work.
Vyn is actually a very interesting and well written character being very different than the rest of the cast due to his unique upbringing (honestly? His family feels like a cult, bro literally is running from a cult) and you learn more about his own psychology the more you get to know him.
Marius is literally just an artist who wants to chase the life he wants but is hindered by responsibility and his position.
And Luke- Luke stole my heart LOL
First off, he's a detective and I've already confessed online to having a thing for detectives by a drawing- that starting since I was a kid and I watched detective conan🧍‍♀️his introduction chapter.. was very interesting. It was literally the first episode, Rosa clearly knows and cares about this character right off the bat you're like hmm? What was this guy doing for 8 years? Why did he show up now after so long? Almost making him suspicious even. But he and Rosa seemed so close despite it all.
After that Luke had started showing up in the story here and there, a moment that made me go “ohh.. what a cool guy.” Was when after Marius’ case in episode 2, he shows up on a bike like “get in we outta here” and saved her from all the reporters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His theme plays at this scene.. my heartttt
Revealing he'd been watching her and the case from afar and was literally waiting for her to get out and get her away.
I started reading the standard SRs, the first one I did was “Among the great blue” which honestly I recommend everyone doing again because I bet you all do not remember Luke saying this about Jellyfish
Tumblr media
The card made me go *the rock eyebrow raise* GAHAH and at the time I was all innocent, not knowing anything about what Luke was going through, so when Rosa woke up and did not find him sleeping next to her (after she invaded where he's supposed to be sleeping lmao) and Luke was hunched over like “I'm fine I just accidentally swallowed gum lol” I actually believed him 💀 there were signs, but it would fly over a player's head until things are revealed ON THE FIRST FREAKING ACT OF HIS PERSONAL STORY and suddenly everything makes sense. Wow.
When I started personal story, I was just starting it because starting all of them is part of the “Rookie tasks” event you get when you start the game. Only to be punched in the gut immediately.
Tumblr media
This is LITERALLY what you’re greeted with when you start his story 💀
I was starting to warm up to this guy and you're telling me.. he's sick and planning to leave us.. omg.
I got to choose one limited SR from the Rookie event, and I thought Luke looked adorable so I picked his card "A star in the palm" and the story.. omg that card, I'm weak. Everyone needs to see it, READ IT!
Tumblr media
It’s illegal to be BOTH handsome and adorable smh
After that I started WANTING to do more Luke stories so I did the other standard SRs “Radiant Sunlight”, “Timely Rescue”, “Inner Sanctum”. They were all so good, my favorite being Inner Sanctum for how much it messed with my heart.
Tumblr media
Dude is literally falling and he STILL makes sure to protect her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I- was dying. I started pulling for Luke's anniversary card, starting to regret my choice going for Artem's. But he wouldn't come-
So I went back to main story because that's how you get the most schips, and guess what- I had reached episode 5…
______________________________
Interlude: Luke Pearce’s Fear
The way episode 5 starts, Luke joins the NXX and Rosa is incredibly surprised seeing him there introducing himself as an agent from the NSB. Meanwhile Luke… is mad.
At first he can't believe Artem would even make her do this but she confirms to him that it was her decision, and then he spills the truth about his identity, and about where he's been the past 8 years. He apologizes, for lying, for planning to leave her again, for everything.
And then this happens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You guys, this scene made me go straight up insane. You can tell how much he had cared and loved her for all these years, and how his biggest fear is literally the main character getting hurt or something happening to her. I felt so emotional over it, that after this act I started DESPERATELY pulling for his card and I finally- finally got it
Episode 5 BTW is one of my favorites in the main story, it is 3 parts because it's THAT good. It's when people will start seeing what Luke is as a character, what's beneath the surface you see in episode 1. (Also this episode introduced the best character: Hugh Moss AHAHH)
The parallel between Rosa, and Jasmine (the reporter whose case you investigate), was not lost on me. That reporter died trying to expose the truth which is exactly what Rosa has been trying to do. I think the entire chapter literally is showing you why Luke is so scared of her continuing the path she's in.
But you know what's the best part? He's freaking terrified, yet he never forces her to leave. He says this:
Tumblr media
People keep saying Luke is a red flag that keeps trying to control Rosa and her actions and I swear my reaction is always “Are you even paying attention?” Luke never forces Rosa, he only shows he's against it, but he always says he will support her whatever decision she makes.
A similar more light-hearted situation is the story of his summer card “Iridescent Heartbeat” where Luke is afraid of Rosa getting hurt or doing things that are too much for her so he doesn't consider doing things such as Bungee jumping or rafting. But Rosa insists that she wants to do it and when she's visibly afraid later, Luke teases her a bit (LOL)
Tumblr media
but then holds her close to him and soothes her saying there's nothing to be afraid of cause he's there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He encourages her to do what she wants! And when she does indeed get hurt because the rope was too tight around her leg, he does NOT put the blame on her, but on himself-
Tumblr media
Y'ALL HOW IS THIS GUY CONTROLLING??
(The scene after kinda got on my nerves cause Rosa got “angry” that he’s not his usual “cheerful self” like girl I love you but please- can’t you see how much you getting hurt affects him? She pretends that she’s angrier than she actually is making Luke apologize over and over like 💀 but tbh it was also funny, I don’t like how she handled it but it was funny lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When they go rafting Luke lets Rosa take the lead and he will follow her because she wanted to prove to him that he doesn't need to plan everything, however Rosa's plan backfires, things go horribly wrong and she can't figure out how to get the raft to go straight. Luke again, does not reprimand her in any way and only helps her so she can do what she wants. Later on even after they've fallen off the raft and onto the water he immediately holds her and takes her up to the surface so worried like “are you okay???” And despite all that, he says she's right. That she's always right and he will stop trying to plan and go more with the flow.
Tumblr media
Luke never tried to control Rosa, he just loves her so much that he does not want to ever see her in pain or sad. He wants her to be the happiest girl in the world.
Tumblr media
So who is Luke? Luke is the coolest mf, a guy that always jumps into action to help others with a heart so damn big that his own emotions slowly destroy him. He has felt an astronomical amount of guilt and regret since childhood- and has cared for and loved the main character just as long. The girl who is the reason he was able to keep his sanity, the girl who he always wanted to protect, and the girl who is the reason he is still here today.
I wholeheartedly believe that without Rosa in his life, Luke would've ended up completely different, if still alive at all.
Tumblr media
Bonus: I remember people being like, the characters have gemstones that match their color in the proposal ring, so why does Luke have Ruby instead of something like Topaz? This is why.. the ruby in the ring represents Rosa (getting emotional over here omg) and honestly that ring is freaking insane because not only did he design and make it and its box by himself for years.. but a ruby is inside the key that Rosa gave to him.
Tumblr media
Remember how Luke when you click on the key in visit says “I wear it like this to have it as close as possible to my heart” now look at the key.. if the Ruby is Rosa, and Luke’s heart is the key, do you see what he conveyed in that ring? Yea, I’m crying too.
______________________________
Part 5: Obsession
I have a bit of an obsession problem, I've been obsessed with stories, games, or characters and that obsession can last years of my lifetime. And it's understandable, when you're going through terrible things in your life, you get attached to what makes you feel happy and you hold on to that feeling. That's what starts that obsession.
When I got the second anniversary Artem card I did the story immediately and it was.. it was alright. Artem wants to propose, but in his attempt to keep it all secret distances himself too much and gets Rosa worried, but then wow! He proposes with the help of his coworkers and happy ending + things get a bit spicy at the end.
But I felt like.. like I'm getting deja vu AHAHA like I've seen this kind of story a million times before. (Probably cause I did from watching a bunch of kdramas and having consumed a bunch of stories from a lot of media) It did not exactly get me to feel anything much, I'm sure it's different for Artem stans though having him propose after probably following his story for 2 years XD good on you guys have fun with your mans!
For me though who had just started, it did not have that much of an effect. After I got the Luke anniversary card I was excited and went into the story oh so innocently not knowing back then that Luke cards are honestly heart wrenching.
It led to me crying in bed while the sun was rising from the window as Luke says “That's because I love you.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way how he blocks the wind from her and lets it hit him instead at that exact moment is freaking PEAK writing.
That card showed me a lot more about this man who is so shackled by his own emotions and circumstance, that he's willing to sacrifice everything even his own wants and dreams for the one he loves.
Have you guys seen that one official art with Rosa posing as Themis? And the boys are represented by the objects around her? Luke is the sword, Artem is the balance, Vyn is the blindfold, and Marius is the snake by her leg.
Tumblr media
It starts to make sense why Luke is holding onto her sword to the point of bleeding, he's bleeding yet he looks up to her in absolute devotion not caring for what happens to him and his eyes are only always on her. He’s willing to be her sword, to take all of the pain and protect her so she can be happy.
My life.. has not been what is considered “normal”. I'm not going to give my backstory in this post aHAHAH but at the time when I started Tears of Themis I was going through a very bad point in my life where I was close to have given up completely on my future and accepted my fate as it is. I had shut down completely, and I went back to becoming a shut-in which is honestly something I went through for four years before, it wasn't good.
When you reach that point, you start becoming apathetic to everything.
Luke however, somehow started making me start having emotions again. Reading and learning about this character was actually affecting me in a way I have not been affected in a long time. He felt.. real, like I could feel his emotions, his love, his despair.
And that's part of why I got so attached to him and he became my comfort, because of him, I started to feel human again.
AHA CRINGE. OK enough with the sadness.
But I'll never forget how much Luke and Tears of Themis helped me keep a grip during those hard months. I'm in a better place now, it's not good- but it's better, and I still just open this game and visit Luke to help me ground myself.
Tumblr media
One time after a bad day I accidentally touched him and he said this, I went insane-
I think that says a lot about the state of my sanity AHAHAH

Rez - Beyond Mode All Unveiled
All the conditions for beyond mode, which is a hidden mode of "Rez", have been lifted. Players who are into it are likely to have already played some, but the table on the right should complete them all. There are some pretty tough conditions, but since it's a specification that will appear at the same time even with cumulative play time, it should be possible eventually. Let's fully enjoy the other side of "Rez".
MORORIAN (MOROLIAN)
In beyond, there is also a mode in which the player becomes a Morolian from "Space Channel 5".
beyond
beyond mode A mode that can be entered when any of the stone conditions are met. This is a hidden mode different from the normal mode. There are play through, hidden areas, special modes, and boss modes. The difficulty of the game follows that of Score Attack, and the score is displayed as well. (Other than Trancemission mode).
beyond options Options that only affect beyond mode. Player selection, invincible mode, beam type, infinite overdrive, and camera viewpoint change are now possible. By playing in various combinations, you can experience "Rez" that is different from normal mode.
others The familiar "Up! Chu!" voice becomes the SE(Sound Effects), the Morolian, unlike normal players, do not level up. In addition to having no endurance, the shot speed is slow, making the game quite difficult. Fun is a double-edged sword.
beyond mode:
Direct Assault (Play through Area 1~5):
ambient - Clear Direct Assault [normal] (1st round)
punk - Clear Direct Assault [ambient] (2nd round)
oldschool - Clear Direct Assault [punk] (3rd round)

trance - Clear Direct Assault [psychedelic] (5th round)
normal - Clear Area 5 in play (normal game)

Rez SCORE ATTACK EVENT
Score Attack Event Now On! The "Rez" Score Attack event will be held! Players who score high will receive gorgeous prizes such as Eye-trek (Olympus) and vibration headphones! The deadline is January 11th next year!
Address: Shibuya, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo United Game Artists "Rez Score Attack"
SCORE ATTACK STAGE LOST AREA
The target is beyond mode Lost Area. Let's record a VHS video of this play from start to finish and send it to UGA.
*Don't forget to include your address, name, age, and phone number in the document enclosed with the video! Please note that submitted videos cannot be returned.
SCORE ATTACK ONE POINT ADVICE FROM UGA
POINT 1: 8 locks as much as possible! The base of the score attack is 8 locks.Even in UGA, this method is used to get scores that make you say, "Isn't that a lie!?"For reference, 250,000 to 260,000 points are possible on one page.
POINT 2: Use network openings, too! When you lock on, try using network openings and items well to get 8 locks. Overdrive destroys enemies at once, so refrain from it.
(Page 143)
INTERVIEW - Jun Kobayashi
"Rez" is an active game. If you don't move yourself, it won't start
Thoughts that "I definitely wanted to make it into a game"
- Mr. Kobayashi, please tell us how you decided to create "Rez".
Kobayashi:About 4 years ago, when UGA (then CS4 Lab) moved to Shibuya, a friend of mine took me there to hang out in the middle of the night. When I was chatting with Mizuguchi there, he said, "Wouldn't it be interesting if there was a shooting game where notes would fly out and when you shoot them, they would turn into music? He said, "Oh, that sounds interesting. I said, "Yes, I'll try it" (laughs), and that's how it all started.
-So the shooting part was decided from the beginning.
Kobayashi: Mizuguchi-san had a fixed idea of shooting. I used to make shooters myself, so I know, but to be honest, I was worried. That's why I came up with various ideas such as shooting guns and making it look like a DJ, but in the end I went back to the initial image.
Rez KEYWORD: Wire Frame
Because of the current era, the wireframe is conversely catchy. What was the reason for sticking to this! From the moment I started this project, I knew I wanted to use wireframes for this game. I told the art director, Mr. Yokota, 'You can use realistic backgrounds, but we definitely want to use wireframes as the main element. I was influenced by Atari's "Missile Command" and "Star Wars", which I still think are cool. but there are no games these days that I think are "beautiful" but "cool. I was a bit selfish," said Kobayashi.
- Three years of development was a long time.
Kobayashi: Usually, three years means the amount of work and graphics, but I have been working on the system for three years. Especially when it comes to programming, I have to repeat it countless times.
-What kind of trial and error did you go through before you actually decided on this?
Kobayashi:If you add a little complicated element, you can create various game features. But on the other hand, if you put it in, the pleasantness of the sound will gradually decrease. It was very difficult to strike that balance, and there were times when we argued that it wouldn't be okay if it didn't fit into the shape of the game. However, I was against that, and I thought, "I definitely want to make it a game. So I decided to make the gameplay "just shoot," and to make it "a game that anyone can play and feel the pleasure of the sound.
-I think the system part also had a lot of trouble, but what about that?
Kobayashi: We had a system in place where when you shoot it, it will be combined with the back BPM appropriately. Then, I remembered the DJ-like idea I had at the beginning of the project, which was how to make it more exciting. That's when I came up with the "network opening".By putting that in between bars and lifting it up like a DJ, the feeling of pressing a switch and the sound that comes after that are mixed and excited. On the other hand, those who miss that shot can't get very excited.
(Picture) Director - JUN KOBAYASHI Joined UGA in this work after working as a designer for a major game maker.Despite his light image, he is actually quite a game enthusiast.
PS2 version completed in just two months
-How was the development of the PS2 version?
Kobayashi:That was already a miracle (laughs). We were able to port it within two months after we started working on it in earnest. I think we were able to do it thanks to the hard work of the programmers and technical support staff. We had a lot of trouble with the sound because of the differences between the DC and PS2.
-So you have created exactly the same thing.
Kobayashi:Yes, I think so. But people with good ears might feel the difference in sound.
-PS2 has a beautiful picture.
Kobayashi:PS2's blur is so beautiful. The other point is that we were able to achieve 1 point. Actually, I could have added more textures and effects if I had focused on PS2.
Rez KEYWORD: Sex&Fertilization
A certain secret was hidden in the process of evolution of the character of "Rez". "Actually, the game's initial concept is 'sex = fertilization'. The player is a sperm, and the eden that is saved at the end is an egg. With that kind of setting, players all over the world are playing Rez. Various people are hacking eden using software called "Eden".In the end, the image that players are hacking there all at once is superimposed on "fertilization".The form (my character) is a person It traces the evolutionary process of an egg (zero), a person (first, second, third), a spirit (fourth), and a reincarnation (fifth, final).”
-It is interesting that from the fourth form onwards it develops with a rather religious image.
-Finally, could you give a few words to the users?
Kobayashi: This game is very active, and you have to take action to make it happen. Recently, there are many passive games that are given, moved, and finished. Instead, "Rez" is a game where you have to start the game and make something happen within yourself. If you are happy with that, please buy it. I don't think you will lose anything.
-Thank you very much.
go to next cycle → In the next issue, Mr. Kobayashi will directly talk about the specific parts of the game that were not covered this time. Sharp gouges on stages, bosses, true endings, and more!

Ladybug fucked up like way too hard when they started out. They aimed their show at an aged 6 to 10 year old audience and then made a firm statement that they wanted it to be a monster of the week slice of life superhero show.
And now that the serialized drama show is now popular they're trying to get in on it too. But the show was never built for it. They are running the wrong game on the wrong system. Miraculous ladybug and it's current iteration is not built to be a story with drama and long-term consequences. It is a comedy monster of the week show with slice of life elements.
Them attempting to have anything deeper is a carryover from a previous version of the show and a desire to do what other shows have done. But they had created and sold Spider-Man for little girls (in the most bitter sense)
Miraculous is attempting to do both. It wants to be a super serialized show with deep themes and meanings but they cannot shake the fact that it is just a dumb kids show. It was sold to be a dumb kid show. It is literally written in the Bibles that it should be nothing more than a dumb kid show. It's not a teen Titans, it's not Steven universe, it's not amphibia or owl House. It's not even My Little pony, which was able to pull off a slice of life that book ended with heavy story.
It's the "girl in the tight outfit fights the monster and does a funny because teen girls are dumb and stupid" Show. People getting mad that it's fucking up It's attempt to have a bigger deeper story, and fucking up the big deep things that they wanted to have is like getting upset that your Xbox can't run PlayStation discs. It looks like they should be compatible, but the system just can't read the game. And when it tries, it just can't seem to understand what it means.
The show has been in mistake mode about its direction for a long time. It would genuinely be better off if it had just stuck to the monster of the week formula, and implied a deeper story instead of actually trying to act one out.
Adding more characters was a mistake. Luka was a mistake, kagami was a mistake. Zoe was a mistake. GDV was a mistake. Introducing the guardians was a mistake. The extended miracle box was a mistake.
The furthest they ever should have gone was giving miraculous's to Alya, nino, and Chloe. They should have wrapped up their story by season 4 and had a giant two-part finale where they finally confront hawk moth and save nooroo once and for all.. And it should have ended right there and then on the love square kiss and a scene of them holding hands and everyone would have remembered miraculous as a pretty decent and fun show that never shot itself in the foot because it knew what it wanted to be and it stuck to it. But here we are.

Well, I have your *beautiful* Dualsense Edge controller now, PlayStation. I do wish it was compatible with more PC games, though… Had to find some software to get it working, and it works on basically every game now, I just wish those games had *native* support.
Also Halo Infinite can actually detect a DualShock 4. Go figure.

Don't start another console war you two, please... at least try to be a little bit more friendly towards each other...

God of War
Developer: Santa Monica Studio Publisher: PlayStation PC LLC Steam Deck Compatibility?: Verified Rrp: £39.99 (Gog.com, Humble, Steam and Epic) Released: 14th January 2022 Available on: Gog.com, Humble, Steam and Epic Played Using: An Xbox One Control Pad and a Steam Deck Approximate game length: 40 hours +
I’m just going to say this now, until this one I’ve never played any of the God of War games. From what I’m given to understand this game is different from its predecessors in a number of ways, not least of which being the setting. For starters, Kratos (one of two main characters) is older than in the previous games, though it’s never specified how much older, another difference is the inclusion of his son Atreus (the second of the two main characters).
God of War originally released in 2018 on the Playstation 4 but has thankfully joined the slowly growing number of games that Playstation are allowing onto the PC (albeit five years later). The game is what I would call semi open world, where you can’t go just anywhere but the space in which you do have to play is quite extensive and densely packed.
Tumblr media
Graphically this game is absolutely gorgeous and runs smoothly (even on my rig that's starting to show its age). On the Steam Deck it generally runs wonderfully though it does drain the battery incredibly quickly while not docked. I did have one instance of the game crashing while docked though it seems to have been a one off as I've not been able to replicate it.
As I mentioned this game is a densely packed semi open world so there is plenty to do. What I find quite impressive is that as you play through the game Kratos tries to use the various side missions as a way to teach Atreus lessons. I think that's a very smart way to show how Kratos has grown as a character from the previous games (from what I can tell) without making it explicit.
Tumblr media
The combat is engaging and fast paced with multiple opponents trying to attack you at the same time forcing you to dodge and parry blows from different directions. If you do successfully parry an attack you’re rewarded with a brief window of time where the combat slows and you can take your opportunity to strike. Unlike many other games that saddle you with an NPC Atreus is actually useful, especially in combat, as he will attack enemies of his own accord or by your command. He even will sometimes restrain enemies allowing you to get free hits in or a moment's respite.
As you fight you'll build up ‘Spartan Rage’ (as depicted in a metre below your health bar). This metre increases from both dealing and taking damage. Once you activate this ‘Rage Mode’ you cause much more damage and are totally immune to all damage for the short time it lasts.
Tumblr media
Defeated enemies sometimes drop healthstones that restore a portion of your health, resources for upgrading your equipment or hacksilver that can be used in stores. These can also be found within breakable pottery that's scattered around the world (except the resources, those are typically found in chests). Defeating enemies also grants experience (XP) but only once you’ve completed a combat encounter.
Experience (or XP) is spent on upgrading your skills, however you can also use it to upgrade the various runes you will find in the world that can be applied to your weapons and armour. In Atreus’s case not only can it be spent on making him a much more efficient fighter but also allow him some magical affinity.
Tumblr media
Your ‘Goals’ (read objective) screen is separated into five parts; Journey, favours, labours, treasure maps and artefacts. Journey is the main storyline, favours are side quests, labour's are optional tasks such as ‘kill X creatures’, treasure maps I feel are self explanatory and artefacts are items found in the world. All of the goals and codex screens are written by Atreus which I think is a clever idea as Kratos doesn't seem to be the type to write things down. A great example of this is when you defeat an enemy type a few times more information in the form of hints will appear in that enemies bestiary entry.
If I had to level one complaint against this game it would be that it’s slightly guilty of over using and recycling enemy types. A great example of this are the trolls, through this game you’ll face a number of trolls (about six if memory serves) however they all have the same move set, and look the same apart from maybe being bigger or a different colour.
Tumblr media
I did wonder if this game deserved all the hype it was given back when it first released and now having played it I get it. It’s a lot of fun with an interesting plot and charming characters. If you’ve not played this game don’t worry about not having played the previous titles, it really does stand up on its own so I heartily recommend it.

Get the details below.
■ Demo
The demo will launch on January 12 at midnight (JST). It is downloadable from PlayStation Store.
Tumblr media
There are three modes to play in the demo. You can try out “Tutorial,” “Story,” and “Quest” modes.
Tumblr media
Tutorial Mode will let you practice the basic controls of the game. Whether you have played a trial version or are touching the game for the first time, it will be the best way to get comfortable with the game’s controls.
Tumblr media
Story Mode is exactly what it sounds like. You’ll play through an introductory portion of the story, which will be almost the same as the release version.
Tumblr media
Lastly, we have Quest Mode. This mode includes three different Quests. These quests are multiplayer-compatible, so grab a friend or three and dive in. Of course, it’s also possible to play them offline using CPU-controlled allies. Compared to the Story, the battles in this mode will prove to be more challenging, so have fun sinking your teeth into them.
Tumblr media
These are characters you can play in this mode. You will also be able to customize their gear loadouts, so there’s plenty to check out. Characters also have unique banter with each other, so try out as much as you can.
Tumblr media
When you select a mode, there will be a prompt asking if you would like to use either Assist Mode, so feel free to give it a shot. Completing the Story and Quest modes of the demo will net you some small bonuses for the release version of the game.

■ Update Schedule
Tumblr media
As our first update, we’ll be releasing an incredibly difficult Quest featuring Lucilius. It is one of the most challenging quests in the game, which means he will take a lot of preparation to take down. This fight is not part of Granblue Fantasy: Relink‘s storyline, of course, but is more of a simulation of the final showdown with Lucilius from 000. The impossible-difficulty Lucilius from mobile Granblue Fantasy has all the elements of a challenging RPG fight. We wanted to take those elements and translate them into Granblue Fantasy: Relink‘s brand of action, all while recreating the animations and badass vibe of the original. I think we were successful in reproducing something action game fanatics will really be able to sink their teeth into. And we are not lying when we say it’s challenging—it’s extremely tough.
Tumblr media
Seofon and Tweyen Update
Tumblr media
Updates Schedule
Lucilius drops in early March, Seofon and Tweyen in April, and one more thing in May.

The Good, The Bad, and Everything Inbetween of the Playstation 2
Tumblr media
Intro
To me, the Playstation 2 is the best video game console ever. Period. Its catalogue is undeniably strong but I am definitely very biased as well, not to mention that the dualshock remote looks almost exactly the same from PS2 to PS4... But mainly, there is a reason many iconic titles from famous series are from this system and era of video game history. The PS2’s time in the spotlight (1999- 2011) was the real start of the hayday of video games.
So, in honor of my love for the system, here is my rankings for the games i’ve played so far and why!
***I will only be judging games that originally launched on the system, including bridge games, NOT PS1 games that are backwards compatible. So sorry MGS1 and FFVII
From Top to Bottom
Tumblr media
1. Shadow of the Colossus
5/5 stars. One sentence review: I’m sobbing.
2. Metal Gear Solid 2
4.5/5 stars. One sentence review: “No, that is NOT the real Solid Snake!”
3. Resident Evil 4
4.5/5 stars. One sentence review: Fixed camera and gun controls making me want to get the Las Plagas fr.
4. God of War
4.5/5 stars. One sentence review: I don’t know what’s more unforgiving: the game itself or playing it on the PS2.
5. Bully
4.5/5 stars. One sentence review: I really wish people gave Bully more attention than GTA.
6. GTA Vice City
4/5 stars. One sentence review: For some reason my PS2 had a hard time running Vice City and this game is significantly smaller than others on this list.
7. Onimusha
4/5 stars. One sentence review: I really enjoyed this story and I would’ve loved it a lot more if the controls didn’t feel like I was committing a felony.
8. Devil May Cry
4/5 stars. One sentence review: “I should’ve filled yoUR DARK SOUL WITH LIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!!!!”
9. GTA III
4/5 stars. One sentence review: Just didn’t do it for me story wise as much as the others, i dont know.
10. God of War II
3.5/5 stars. One sentence review: Least favorite God of War game besides Chains of Olympus, not that it’s bad it’s just okay.
11. Crazy Taxi
3.5/5 stars. One sentence review: Very fun but only for about ten minutes.
12. Yakuza 2
2/5 stars. One sentence review: I’m a diehard Yakuza/RGG/Like A Dragon fan but I stg this is the worst game in the series, I never even beat it.
13. Devil May Cry 2
2/5 stars. One sentence review: Bad mechanics and bored me.
The Superlatives
The Best Title in a Series
Tumblr media
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
An easy pick for this category and a game that is second only to Shadow of the Colossus, is Metal Gear Solid 3. It is a fantastic game as much as it is a great entry in an amazing series. For those who don’t know, MGS3 is a prequel for the entire series and takes place even before the old 8-But Metal Gear games. MGS3 follows Naked Snake who becomes the infamous Big Boss, the notorious antagonist for the rest of the series, and is the first game in the series to really perfect the stealth combat with the addition of an over the shoulder camera and new camouflage mechanics. Other notable aspects of MGS3 are that graphics for the game still hold up today, the characters are some of the most memorable in the series (I LOVE YOU BOSS!!!!), and the boss fights are engaging. Not to mention that if I had to guess, you’re probably humming “Snake Eater” to yourself right now.
MGS3 is such a good MGS title that I believe it sort of set Kojima up for failure with every game that came after it.
The Best Game You’ve Never Played/My Personal Favorite PS2 Game
Tumblr media
Blood Will Tell: Osamu Tezuka’s Dororo
The only reason Blood Will Tell isn’t number one is because I felt bad putting Shadow of the Colossus as number 2. I fucking love this game with my whole heart and soul, I really don’t know where to begin. The title of “the best game you’ll never play” isn’t one that I came up with myself, many people refer to Blood Will Tell by that superlative and you’re probably wondering why that is. Blood Will Tell was released by SEGA in 2004 and flopped in the Americas despite many looking back on the title fondly, as a result of its recent popularity (largely due to the 2019 Dororo anime and rise of the collector’s market) and little supply, it became an incredibly rare game with the highest selling price for a PS2 game I have ever seen. Blood Will Tell goes for anywhere between $400 to $700 USD, for reference: Silent Hill 2 goes for about $100. Which is why I don’t give this superlative away lightly, even the copy I own isn’t legitimate. There’s no way I’m spending that much money on a game without playing it myself.
So this brings to the second superlative I gave it: my personal favorite PS2 game. It’s the best game you’ll never play for a reason, there is a demand for it for a reason. While the dub is laughably bad, the game itself is incredibly rich. The goofy voice acting adds to the game’s charm and, in my opinion, makes a fantastic game more enjoyable. The gameplay is addictive and one of the most fluid for the 20 year old console, Blood Will Tell is a hack-n-slash that feels like a mix of Sekiro and Ghost of Tsushima to me —which is funny because both of those games came out the same year and fought for the GotW award. You play as Hyakkimaru, a boy with swords for arms who is cursed after his father gave away all 48 body parts to demons in a deal for power. Now it’s your job to get your body back, piece by piece. This plot allows for incredibly unique visual story telling that is astounding for the time it came out in. For example, in the beginning chapter Hyakki is blind. They show this by making the world entirely black and white until he gets his sight back in which color floods your screen in a beautiful way. Since he can’t speak he has a filter that makes it sound like he’s talking in his head… etc. Even some of the 48 bosses are hidden and optional, something I didn’t expect to see in a game this old. On my first playthrough, I missed some bosses because the map is deceptively big. I think my only critiques besides the silly voice acting (personally, I like it) are that Dororo’s sections of the game aren’t great but they don’t drag on either so I don’t mind them and that the music is stale and repeats.
All in all, I can yap about this game all day because I love it so much. If you are unwilling to spend $700 on Blood Will Tell, I highly recommend that you buy a cheap repro or emulate it on your computer. If neither of those are options for you consider watching a playthrough on youtube or, better yet, reading/watching all the other adaptations of Dororo! Blood Will Tell is based of the 1963 manga Dororo by Osamu Tezuka (the mangaka of Astroboy and Black Jack) and there are many versions of this story!
The Best Adventure Game
Tumblr media
Okami
I like to call Okami “the game that raised me” because it pretty much did. I first remember playing it in sixth grade and have played a run through of it probably once a year since. I’ve played it on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Playstation 5, and Playstation 2… and I’ll honestly say that it plays best on Switch. When Okami came out it originally launched on the Wii, which is why it plays so well on Switch as well. The reason for that is because of its unique, never before seen gameplay. Okami’s premise is that you play as Okami Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun in the form of a white wolf, who is resurrected in order to save the world from darkness. Ammy’s special ability is that she can manipulate the Celestial Brush, which has 13 different techniques that allow the player to literally play God by painting onto their surroundings to summon things like wind, water, fire, and vines or to literally stop time or cause nature to bloom. This Celestial Brush is why it plays so well on Nintendo consoles, which is actually why I recommend playing this game on one instead of on PS2. Okami has been remastered and really has no reason to be played PS2. In addition to why it isn’t fantastic on the PS2 is that Okami is most known for its visuals. The entire game is done in a painterly style with cell-shaded brush strokes that outline everything decoratively to aid it’s themes of traditional Japanese mythology… And one thing that makes that style look even better is when it is not played in low poly on the PS2.
So to put the kebash on this one, Okami was the best adventure game on the PS2 despite not being suited for the console itself. So please, play the remaster to enjoy the story even more!
The Best Fighting Game
Tumblr media
Yakuza
I know a lot of you might disagree with me on this but please know I am only going off games I have played and that I also don’t care about what others think. I love this series. There are 8 Yakuza games, 10 if you count Like A Dragon 8: Infinite Wealth and Gaiden, 13 if you count Ishin, Ishin (Remake/Remaster), Kenzan!, and Dead Souls, 15 if you count Kiwami 1 & 2, and 17 if you count the Black Panther games… but it all started with this one game. Yakuza is a beat ‘em up that was advertised as “Japan’s GTA” which I think is an apt description only for the street fighting you do. In actuality, Yakuza is a game that follows the ex-yakuza Kiryu Kazuma as he fights to save the people he cares about and struggles with his loyalty to his former life a made man. The combat is fun and engaging with its use of combos and cinematics, however the controls are a bit finicky but nothing that will drive you up the wall. Another drawback of this title is the voice acting for the same reason as Blood Will Tell, it is a horrendous English dub. But I think it’s enjoyably bad, Mark Hamill and John DeMagio jumpscared me when I first heard their voices.
Although, I don’t necessarily recommend Yakuza to anyone who doesn’t have a PS2 at all, really, and that is because Yakuza Kiwami exists —which is a remake for modern consoles of this game with a million new things, better graphics and combat, and no English dub. This remake highlights everything that was so good about the original.
The Best Horror Game
Tumblr media
Silent Hill 2
I think I can keep this one short because Silent Hill 2 is a game that needs no introduction. It practically invented the psychological survival horror genre as we know it be today and still is an amazing game that manages to always unnerve me. From its multiple endings to its atmospheric environment, Silent Hill 2 sets the bar for what should be a good horror game and inspires many series still. But above all else, Silent Hill 2 has the best soundtrack out of any game that I’ve mentioned so far. Akira Yamaoka is a genius songwriter.
The Worst Game I’ve Played So Far
Tumblr media
Fullmetal Alchemist 2: Curse of the Crimson Elixir
I love Fullmetal Alchemist (if my account was any clue into that haha) and I thought that my love for that series was going to help get through this game. But I was so wrong and I should’ve listened to my gut. FMA works really well as video game if you actually try to make it one or else it doesn’t work, the ingredients are there you just have to follow the recipe. But Fullmetal Alchemist 2: Curse of the Crimson Elixir takes this way too seriously. Not only does it harp on the most boring episodes of the original series, it does so in the worst manner possible. The game itself looks like plastic, it’s cellshaded blandly. The music is loud and at times annoying, the fighting is stiff and uninspired when alchemy could be so much fun if done right, and it follows a clunky visual novel style in cutscenes for no reason. Even in the menu you can see that it was trying to be an RPG but never committed and I think this game could’ve shined if it was one, instead of the lame fighter it is now. The only benefit I see in this game is that the voice acting is all the original cast. So that’s nice… everything else? Not so much.
Thanks for reading! Please let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions for me to play!

Office Tour! I recently added some new thingies to my office, and thought it'd be neat to do a photo tour. Completely disregard my color scheme for my walls and curtains lol. I don't like purple and green together, but they were the only blackout curtains I had.
Picture 1: On my main desk a have three computers hooked up. The big one on the left is my main machine. It runs Windows 10 right now, but that will soon change to Linux Mint once I upgrade my storage drives. The two machines behind the monitors are older machines for special tasks. The Windows 7 machine is for running games that run poorly on newer machines, like Gruntz! It's an old dentist office computer I bought from a thrift store for $20. The other is a banished office optiplex I salvaged and upgraded. It runs Linux Mint, and will one day be my home server for my website (I hope).
The two older computers only display to my second monitor, but I'm fine with that. Each computer has it's own pair of mice and keyboards, which is kinda annoying, but I can deal with it. I recently upgraded my main computer keyboard from an old office membrane board to an even older office membrane board. This new older board is PS / 2, and I had to fight Windows to get it to function, but it works. The older membranes feel nicer for some reason. Still super spongy and terrible, but it's nice for a free upgrade. One day I'll upgrade to a quiet, mechanical keyboard.
Picture 2: All the way to the left of my desk is my pen display for drawing. It's an Artisul product, which was way cheaper than a Wacom. I'm happy with it, but I haven't got to use it very much. Hopefully that will change with this new job I got.
Picture 3: To the left is the fourth and last desktop I have set up. This one runs Windows 98 for even older games that won't run on Windows 10 or 7. Well, with emulators and virtual machines, you can get almost anything to run on anything, but real hardware is nice. My brother helped me set this one up. The main upgrade I'm looking for on this machine is a better sound card for DOS compatibility.
The tube TV is really nice for playing my Playstation games. One thing you don't see in my office, unfortunately, is a CRT monitor. The LCD next to the TV is my monitor for the 98 machine. It's a good LCD, but I'd like a real CRT. I may have to reinforce the table if I find one lol. The desk in this picture is an old door that was left in my basement from the previous owners of my house. The door is resting on two end tables.
Picture 4: Pusheen is enjoying playing on my PiBoy. I think Hamtaro: Ham Ham Heartbreak is Pusheen's favorite game. My PiBoy runs on a Pie 3 Model B, which a friend of mine gave me.
Picture 5: This is my one and only bookcase in the house. It's mainly picture books and text books. Lots of Where's Waldo, I Spy, game development books, art books, and a few novels. I'd like to get more into reading now that I have more time. Feel free to judge my library. One book I have on my list to read is Etidorhpa. Not entirely sure why I got it, but it reminds me of Journey to the Center of the Earth meets Dante's Inferno. It's fairly old, like 1897 old. I'll do an update if I read and enjoy it.
Outro: That's it for my tour! I have more computers, but that's enough computers for one post. Maybe I'll do a tour in the future for just my laptops. Hope you enjoyed. I think my Ask Me Anything is open. If you have questions about something pictured and want more info, I'm happy to expand :)
