I have seen the new Knights of the Zodiac movie and must now scream into the void about this fandom no other English-speakers care about. General thoughts above the cut, spoiler-y thoughts below it.
In general: it's fine. Fun even. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you it's a masterpiece, but I'd watch sequels. I'd be interested to see how they interpret other stories in the series given what they've set up here.
It's basically a reworked, movie-original origin story designed to give Seiya and Sienna actual character arcs, and it does that. Pretty much all the weirdness comes from the fact that they're clearly using the Netflix series as the basis of deviation, not the original manga or anime.
Despite the multinational cast, being filmed in English, and everybody trying to talk it up as a "Hollywood" take on the franchise, I honestly don't think it felt like a Hollywood movie. Something about the pacing, editing and special effects reminded me way more of Japanese cinema, specifically high-budget tokusatsu productions like Gatchaman and Shin Ultraman. Which is honestly what I wanted so I was perfectly happy.
The central cast is great. I'd like to see them come back.
I liked the special effects and designs, personally.
They made some great use of music that was either based on, remixed from, or just completely new orchestral arrangements of the music from the original anime.
Sean Bean made it to the second-act climax before his inevitable death.
The choice to make Guraad, the military leader from the Netflix series, a woman, and also Kido's ex-wife, was a fascinating choice. But hey, it meant the movie passes the Bechdel test, because she and Sienna have this interesting, antagonist mother/daughter relationship that has absolutely nothing to do with the men in their lives and everything to do with the existential horror of humanity confronting the gods so. That's fun.
Marin was appropriately badass. I really liked her chemistry with Seiya's actor.
Honestly in general Mackenyu was a real highlight of the film? Him and Diego Tinoco both, they were great. Madison Iseman and Mark Dacasos were both more Hollywood-y, but they put in good performances, and once Sienna went full Athena the effects and performance were pretty spot-on.
Cassios shows up as a henchgoon and jobber. He's got an Ophiuchus tattoo, which was an interesting little detail.
But speaking of little details -- unsurprisingly, Nero is the one with the most interesting potential for sequels. He's the only other Knight besides Seiya and Marin that we get to see and acts as Guraad's "dragon" and mystical-stuff advisor throughout the film. They don't really explain what his deal is, aside from wanting to kill Athena and steal the Gold Cloth, so he could be there on Sanctuary's behalf. But at one point during their fight he says to Seiya, "Humans don't need any gods." And throughout the movie, he's wearing an earring that is super obviously Shun/Shaun's triangle chain. That has some really interesting potential for sequels, particularly in parallel with what they do with Seika/Patricia protecting Seiya.
Oh, and it ended with both Seiya and Nero shirtless and showing off their very nice abs so hey, kudos for remembering the secondary fanbase that's kept this franchise alive.
So yeah, overall: I see why it only got a limited release, but it'd sure be nice if it was popular enough in Latin America to fund a sequel. I've seen worse movies. This is a cheesy-ass franchise, I never get my hopes up too high, if it entertains me for the length of the film I consider it a success.
Still think it's hilarious that Sean Bean wound up here. How the hell did that happen.

Let's talk about the live action of Saint Seiya/Knights of the Zodiac, without spoilers. Cause I was finally able to watch it and I'm always saying that you can't judge something that you haven't seen.
Since it was announced, I was really afraid cause Hollywood isn't good with anime adaptations (except for Speed Racer of 2008, my beloved) and Saint Seiya is honestly one of my favorite animes of all time; but I decided to give it a chance and go to see it.
I'll be the first one to admit that it isn't perfect - the dialogue is dull and predictable in a few scenes, and the cloths were okay, not great, just okay. Besides that, I enjoyed a lot the film.
The actors/actresses really acted like they knew their characters, and understood the purpose of them. Specially Mackenyu as Seiya, he was amazing. The effects were great, I loved the Pegasus and the Phoenix constellations, and the way the cloths merged with their knights was straight out pulled from the anime.
But what I really consider was the best thing about this movie, was the fighting scenes. Right from the start, it was well done and I enjoyed that so much. All my love to Andy Chen and his team, you outdone yourselves, it felt like watching the anime.
I also almost lost my mind in one specific scene were Pegasus Fantasy started playing, loved that so much.
Overall, I would give the plot of the film a 7.5/10; but the fights and effects (specially with that small budget) deserves a 10/10.

Spoilers for the Knights of the Zodiac live-action movie, for the five of you who care.
I'm legitimately intrigued by what little we get of Nero in film, and what could imply given the general lore of the series. What stood out to me:
Marin, who is stuck on a mystical island for vague "destiny says so" reasons (honestly it's just an excuse for why she can't help in the climax, and gives Seiya and Saori a safe place to retreat to once all is said and done), knows of him, telling Seiya, "I knew of a Knight once who fought only for power -- the strongest of Athena's knights, the Phoenix."
He uses his Phantom Demon to interrogate a guy, but doesn't get to use it in the fight with Seiya. He also doesn't lose that fight; it gets interrupted and he's blown away by Athena, opening the chance for him to still be a pretty brutal threat in the future.
One of the things he does for Guraad is build this big, mystical-looking device that's intended to like, suck out Athena's godly cosmos and destroy her. He describes this as "half" of his plan, with the other half being to steal the gold cloth that Guraad is using as... I think a power source? It's not exactly clear and doesn't really matter, point is that she has it and he takes it during the climax.
And then there's the details I mentioned in my last post about his "Humanity needs no gods" line and the earring that looks an awful lot like Shun/Shaun's triangle-tipped Andromeda Chain.
So like I said, it could very well be that he's there in his standard capacity as an agent of Sanctuary, sent to kill Athena and reclaim/steal the Gold Cloth for himself. But, like... imagine how interesting it would be if this version of him, for example, remembered that childhood encounter with Pandora, the one where she seemingly merged the soul of the god of death with his baby sibling. That would put a whole new spin on why he would've specifically learned/researched/developed the god-killer machine, and his particular drive to prevent them from returning to the human world.
Having Nero/Ikki know about Shaun/Shun's connection to Hades the entire time and be doing everything he can to prevent it would be a great way to work one of the most popular parts of the mythos more cohesively into the narrative. It'd also be a nice thematic parallel with what the film already does with both Sienna and Patricia, and provide a good reason for this version of Seiya -- who doesn't have the childhood friend connection with the other bronze saints/knights -- to find comradery with Shun and, through them, come to understand Nero.
IDK, I think it'd be really interesting. It probably won't happen given how little buzz this film has been getting but a fan can dream.

I’ve been in Exile hell for a hot second and as it so happens, I’ve ported my two asshole boys there for a character development exercise (bonded with both runs pretty fucking fast, I’ll need to redo El’s though) and while I WILL NOT TALK ABOUT CASSANDER A LOT ON MAIN, I will talk about what that run made me realise without spoiling, hopefully, the Exile!
Canon!El, referred to herein as Elandrin Aien, has a very good support network going on, even before he meets Liv, and that stops the most volatile and violent of his impulses. Exile!El, aka Elandrin Hawkmaze, does not and it makes him that much worse.
It’s one of those “idk why this was a revelation to me” moments but it is. Social safety nets matter. (It’s why Nyra isn’t the worse version of herself rn.) And as a reminder to myself, this is why I made it narratively impossible for him to reach that point in canon.
At least he has a tall, gentle, kind boyfriend in Exile too....
