Once more, why Jiang Cheng's homophobia is not funny, cute, or anything to do with a sibling dynamic:
Hi! So first of all I want to clarify that I’m not in any way saying jc isn’t a homophobe, because I mean, it’s pretty obvious. However back when I read the mxtx interview I read her answer as ‘wwx acted all of a sudden very different with lwj, to the point where it was jarring for jc who had not seen him act that way before.’ I do not think jc understood at all wwx’s affections towards lwj, and this did not think it was disgusting because he saw it as flirting. (½)
I find it weird that people use it as a 'proof’ that jc is homophobic when it’s not straightforwardly telling us it’s homophobia, and also since you know, the novel is right there and tells us far more clearly that jc is, in fact, a homophobe. (2/2)
So, here, I agree the interview isn’t a stated full explanation in itself and not to be used as evidence alone.
I think that at the time it was not fully homophobia on his part when he had first noticed Wei Wuxian’s attention for Lan Wangji in Cloud Recesses. Jiang Cheng had never understood Wei Wuxian’s penchant for wanting to be around Lan Wangji and I think that his surprise of Wei Wuxian flirting with a man (He himself talks about how he never thought it odd with Wei Wuxian flirting with women all the time) Lan Wangji was always the strange outlier for flirting. It steadily devolves into more overt homophobia as they get older.
Cloud Recesses when they’re 15,
Wei WuXian replied, “Yeah, I also thought that he should be praised for having the courage to come see me. He was probably told by his uncle to come check if I was kneeling properly.”
Jiang Cheng instinctively felt a foreboding sensation, “Were you kneeling properly?”
Wei WuXian, “I was kneeling properly. After he was some distance away, I found a stick and started to dig in the dirt. The pile beside your foot. There’s an ant hole there that I went through tons of trouble to find. When he turned his head, he saw that my shoulders were shaking, and he definitely thought that I was crying. He even came back to ask me. You really should have seen his expression as he saw the ant hole.”
“…” Jiang Cheng spoke, “You should get lost and go back to Yunmeng as soon as possible! I don’t think that he wants to see you ever again.”
The part that sticks out here is the fact that Jiang Cheng feels any sense of foreboding at all for a silly situation that Lan Wangji had walked away from seeing Wei Wuxian was actually okay. It’s the first seed of him continuing the line of thought that “He hates you”. He is already feeling strange about Wei Wuxian’s flirting and chooses to sort of project this hate into Lan Wangji for Wei Wuxian.
Lotus Pier summer after Cloud Recesses lessons:
I just thought of someone.”
Jiang Cheng, “Who?”
Wei WuXian, “Lan Zhan.”
Jiang Cheng, “Why would you think of him for no reason? Reminiscing what it felt like to copy sect rules?”
Wei WuXian spat out a seed, “It’s fun to think of him. You don’t even know—he’s just too amusing. I told him, ‘Your sect’s food is disgusting. I’d rather eat stir-fried watermelon peel than eat your food. If you have time, come have fun with us at Lotus Pier…'”
Before he even finished, Jiang Cheng slapped his watermelon off, “Are you mad? Inviting him to Lotus Pier—are you trying to torture yourself?”
Wei WuXian, “Why are you so upset? My watermelon almost flew away! I was just being polite. Of course he wouldn’t come. Have you ever heard of him go anywhere by himself to have fun?”
Jiang Cheng had on a stern expression, “Let’s make this clear. I don’t want him to come, anyhow. Don’t invite him.”
Wei WuXian, “I never knew you hated him so much?”
Jiang YanLi sat down between the two, “Who are you talking about? A friend you made in Gusu?”
Wei WuXian responded happily, “Yeah!”
Jiang Cheng, “What a shameless ‘friend’ you are. Go ask Lan WangJi and see if he wants you as one.”
Wei WuXian, “Fuck off. If he doesn’t want me, I’ll bother him to the point that he does.” He turned to Jiang YanLi, “Shijie, do you know Lan WangJi?”
Jiang YanLi, “I do. He’s that Lan-er-gongzi whom everyone describes as handsome and talented, isn’t he? Is he really that handsome?”
Wei WuXian, “He is!”
Jiang YanLi, “Compared to you?”
Wei WuXian thought about it for a moment, “Maybe just a bit more handsome than me.”
He formed a tiny bit of space between two fingers. Taking the plate away, Jiang YanLi smiled, “He must be truly very handsome, then. It’s a good thing you made a new friend. In the future, you two can visit each other in your free time.”
Hearing this, Jiang Cheng spat out his watermelon. Wei WuXian waved his hands, “Forget it, forget it. All that’s at his place is bad food and a whole lot of rules. I’m not going again.”
Jiang YanLi, “Then you can bring him here. This is a good opportunity. Why not invite your friend to come stay at Lotus Pier for sometime?”
Jiang Cheng, “Don’t listen to his nonsense, Jie. He’s super annoying in Gusu. Lan WangJi would never want to come home with him.”
Wei WuXian, “What do you mean!? He would.”
Jiang Cheng, “Wake up. Lan WangJi told you to get lost, didn’t you hear? You still remember that?”
Wei WuXian, “What do you know!? Even though he told me to get lost on the surface, I know for sure that he secretly wants to come play with me in Yunmeng—in fact, he would love to.”
Here Wei Wuxian is still in the belief that Lan Wangji does like him. Jiang Cheng of course isn’t amused by Jiang Yanli’s indulgence in Wei Wuxian’s daydreams. Wei Wuxian continues to, well, essentially pine innocently about Lan Wangji, his fellow disciples even encourage it leading to… Jiang Cheng sulking even further over the fact that Wei Wuxian is in fact pining over another boy. He puts two and two together as Wei Wuxian is flirting with the girls on shore later on and he talks of the things he will do with Lan Wangji as he visits. He talked of training with Lan Wangji in the same way he invited the girls to watch him train.
Phoenix Mountain Hunt:
Lan WangJi suddenly raised his hand, stopping a flower tossed over from behind him.
He looked back. Over at the side of the YunmengJiang Sect’s riding formation, which hadn’t departed yet, Jiang Cheng clicked his tongue impatiently, seated at the front. However, the person beside him sat on a horse with black, gleaming hair. His elbow was at the head of the horse as he looked to the side as though nothing happened, talking and laughing with two slender-bodied maidens.
Lan XiChen saw that Lan WangJi had drawn the reins and ceased to move forward, “WangJi, what happened?”
Lan WangJi, “Wei Ying.”
Wei WuXian finally turned around, face full of surprise, “What? HanGuang-Jun, did you call me? What’s up?”
Holding the flower, Lan WangJi seemed to be quite cold. His tone seemed cold as well, “Was it you?”
Wei WuXian immediately denied it, “No, it wasn’t.”
The maidens beside him spoke at once, “Don’t believe him. It was him!”
Wei WuXian, “How could you treat a good person like this? I’m getting angry!”
Giggling, the maidens pulled their reins and went to the formations of their own sects. Lan WangJi lowered the hand that he held the flower with and shook his head. Jiang Cheng spoke, “ZeWu-Jun, HanGuang-Jun, apologies. Don’t pay attention to him.”
Lan XiChen smiled, “That is fine. I will thank Young Master Wei’s kindness behind the flower in place of WangJi.”
When they slowly rode into the distance, carrying with them the clouds of petals and fragrance, Jiang Cheng glanced at the colourful sea of handkerchiefs waving on the watching towers before turning to Wei WuXian, “Why are you throwing out flowers along with the girls?”
Wei WuXian, “I think he looks nice. Can’t I throw a few as well?”
Jiang Cheng pointed his nose into the air, “How old are you? Who do you think you are, still playing tricks like that?”
Interestingly enough, this flower scene is similar to what had once occurred during the summer of Lotus Pier. This is after it had been established that Wei Wuxian thinks Lan Wangji now dislikes him morally. Yet he still reaches out to tease and flirt with him, leading Jiang Cheng to continue asking why well into their early 20’s is Wei Wuxian still doing this. It was excusable when they were younger but now this is inexcusable and troublesome for someone who is supposed to be his righthand acting on whims still and flirting with a man of reputation. Jiang Cheng actively had encouraged the rift between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji after the return from the Burial Mounds. He agreed very readily that Lan Wangji wanted to imprison Wei Wuxian instead of extending any help in regards to Wei Wuxian’s volatile disposition that went on for years after this altercation, convincing himself and Wei Wuxian of Lan Wangji’s supposed hate.
Wei WuXian was in such a state of distress that he couldn’t remember whether or not he called someone’s name at all. He only managed to pull himself together after Jiang Cheng commanded the dog to back away. After a moment of hesitation, he abruptly turned his head away. On the other side, Jiang Cheng left his seat. There was a whip attached beside his waist. With one hand on it, he bent down to look at Wei WuXian’s face. After a pause, he straightened up and asked, “Speaking of it, since when have you been so close to Lan WangJi?”
Wei WuXian immediately understood whose name he had unconsciously called out.
Jiang Cheng smiled menacingly, “It really is quite curious how far he went to protect you, back on Dafan Mountain.”
A moment later, he corrected himself, “No. You weren’t necessarily the one whom Lan WangJi was protecting. After all, the GusuLan Sect couldn’t have forgotten what you did with that loyal dog of yours. How could someone so celebrated for his righteousness tolerate the likes of you? Maybe he’s familiar with this body that you stole instead.”
His words were cruel and sinister. Every sentence seemed well-meaning on the surface, but was actually derogatory. Wei WuXian couldn’t bear hearing it any longer, “Watch your language.”
Thirteen years later his taunts have become more refined as he is well off into hating Lan Wangji himself now that Wei Wuxian had been dead. He taunts that Lan Wangji is more promiscuous than presented as well as using Wei Wuxian’s old goodwill for Lan Wangji for him to go on the defense. Jiang Cheng however thinks using the fact these men are gay is only a tool, he does not believe they are as his disgust of Mo Xuanyu being gay does disgust him. His suspicions have turned into bigotry instead finally in the years that Wei Wuxian was gone.
When Jiang Cheng accused him, Wei WuXian couldn’t defend himself at all, but he just couldn’t bear it when those words were being directed at Lan WangJi.
Wei WuXian reprimanded, “Jiang Cheng, just listen to yourself. What are you saying? Is it appropriate? Don’t forget who you are. After all, you’re the leader of a sect. Insulting a renowned cultivator in front of Uncle Jiang and Madam Yu’s spirits—where is your discipline?”
His original intention was to remind Jiang Cheng to at least hold some respect for Lan WangJi. However, Jiang Cheng was always sensitive. From those words, he managed to make out the notion that he wasn’t fit to be a sect leader. Immediately, darkness crawled up his face, bearing an eerie similarity to how Madam Yu looked when she was angry. His voice was harsh, “Who is the one insulting my parents in front of their spirits?! Could you two please understand whose sect you’re in? I don’t care if you act so shamelessly outside, but don’t you dare fool around inside our ancestral hall, before my parents’ spirits! After all, they were the ones who brought you up—even I feel ashamed for you!”
Wei WuXian never expected such a huge blow to crash down on him. He was both shocked and furious, blurting, “Shut up!”
Jiang Cheng pointed outside, “Mess around outside however you want, whether under a tree or on a boat, hugging or otherwise! Get out of my sect, get away from anywhere my eyes can see!”
Hearing him mention ‘under a tree’, Wei WuXian felt his heart skip a beat—could Jiang Cheng have seen the moment where he crashed into Lan WangJi’s arms?
His guess was not wrong. Jiang Cheng did indeed go out to find Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi. He chased after them in the direction that the street vendors pointed at. A voice in his heart seemed to tell him which places Wei WuXian would definitely go. He caught up to them in just a while. Yet, he just so happened to see Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi enveloped in a tight embrace under a tree, unwilling to let go of each other even after so long.
Goosebumps immediately ran down Jiang Cheng’s body.
Although he’d made guesses at the relationship between Mo XuanYu and Lan WangJi before, they were only attacks trying to offend Wei WuXian, not that he really suspected anything. He’d never thought that Wei WuXian would have ambiguous ties with a man, because after all, when they grew up together, Wei WuXian had never expressed any such interest. He’d always loved good-looking girls with a passion. On the other hand, it was even more impossible for Lan WangJi. He was famous for his asceticism, seemingly interested in neither men nor women.
But hugging like that seemed intense no matter what. At least, they didn’t seem like normal friends or brothers. He immediately recalled that Wei WuXian had always stuck to Lan WangJi ever since he came back. Lan WangJi’s attitude towards him was also different from what it was before he was reborn. At once, he was almost certain that the two really were in that kind of relationship. He couldn’t turn around and leave, yet he didn’t want to say a single word to the two, so he continued to hide himself as he followed them. Every single look and movement that passed between them seemed different in his eyes. For a while, the shock, absurdity, and slight disgust that he felt combined to overpower his hatred. It was only after Wei WuXian brought Lan WangJi into the ancestral hall that the long-suppressed hatred was awakened again, devouring his courtesy and rationality.
Wei WuXian was holding something back, “Jiang WanYin, you… apologize right now.”
Jiang Cheng mocked, “Apologize? For what? For exposing your thing for each other?”
Wei WuXian raged, “HanGuang-Jun is only my friend—what do you think we are?! I warn you. Apologize right now—don’t make me beat you!”
Hearing this, Lan WangJi’s expression froze for an instant. Jiang Cheng laughed, “Well, then I’ve never seen “friends” like that before? You warn me? Warn me against what? If you two had the slightest trace of integrity left, you wouldn’t have come here and…”
Seeing the change in Lan WangJi’s expression, Wei WuXian thought he must have felt insulted by Jiang Cheng’s words. He was so angry that his entire body was shaking. He didn’t dare think about what Lan WangJi would think after being shamed like this.
Obviously in the penultimate scene Jiang Cheng himself is being “the unreliable narrator” that fans love to accuse Wei Wuxian of. He says he never expected this of the two, but all the years of his behavior shows that he had always gone out of his way to keep the two away from each other and had always been mildly homophobic when the two did express interest in the other however innocent it had been in their youth.
All of this is to say, when it comes to how MXTX worded that interview answer, I think it was meant as a careful nudge for those who had still tried to insist that Jiang Cheng didn’t mean to be homophobic, actually wasn’t homophobic and was just angry at any other actions of Wei Wuxian and lashing out about that etc, it was her telling people to simply pay attention to the underlying shadowing of Jiang Cheng and how he exasperated his own pre-existing biases that morphed into an uglier hate.

8 shows to get to know me
i was tagged by @tiffanylamps forever ago (sorry 🤦🏼‍♀️) and more recently by @evil-moonlight (thank you my beloved evil 🖤🖤).
btw none of these are in order because i can’t choose favorites and most of them are recent shows that I’ve watched and not all my favorites over the years.
1. the untamed — y’all i’m a basic bitch and i wish I could say i loved this for wwx and lwj relationship, the darkness and the sacrifice, the pain that comes with being known, the grief of losing the one you hold dear and all the wonderful, wonderful things this show is about… but in reality it’s because of this idiot:
Tumblr media
2. beyond evil — this show has consumed me for like two years now and i’m still writing fic for it and I watch it multiple times. the plot is amazing, the actors are phenomenal, the writer and director are both women. they care about the victims on this show and allow vulnerability to exist while also keeping you at the edge of your seat and so fucking confused. the characters are dynamic and nuanced and so very real, it makes you feel for them so much. but if I’m staying honest then it’s mostly because of these two idiots being in love:
Tumblr media
3. we are lady parts— i didn’t even know i needed this show until i watched it. it’s so fucking punk, the whole show just oozes pink vibes and the music ughhhhhhhh. i’m neither muslim nor from the united kingdom but i resonated so fucking hard with aspects of the characters and fell in with the whole show. it’s empowering and fun, i highly recommend this to everyone.
Tumblr media
4. what we do in the shadows (wwdits) — this show is just… one of the best comedies ever. the writing, the acting, the character development…. this show might honestly be one of the best i’ve ever seen even outside of the comedy genre. it’s so much more then it actually leads you to believe at first. plus the gay, can’t forget about the gay because literally the whole show is queer and i love it. and the plus sized rep is also super wonderful!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. good omens — i recommend this show to everyone because it’s wonderful in so many ways, and the two leads are just *chef’s kiss* but i also love this show so much because it was written by my brother’s favorite author (@neil-gaiman) and he loved this book (and american gods) so much, he talked about it constantly. now that he’s gone whenever i watch it, i feel closer to him and connected to him, it’s a really nice way to handle my grief sometimes. plus i know he’d be pissed that he missed the show too. lol
Tumblr media
6. ted lasso — this show was super surprising for me, i don’t mind watching sports and some games but I was like 10 episodes about sports? Mmmmm maybe not. but then my sister begged and begged for me to watch it so i did. it’s second to wwdits with comedy but this show has the healthiest characters, the greatest character developments, they call out toxic masculinity and sexist ideals, and it’s so heartwarming. i rarely stop smiling while watching it, top notch writing and top notch acting.
Tumblr media
7. derry girls — i struggle to pinpoint the exact reason i adore this show so much. maybe it’s the teenagers that act like actual teenager, or the inclusion of parents in the story line without them being dumb or the main characters or ignore their children. maybe it’s because they are a light in a dark time, living through something awful and scary while still trying to live their lives. maybe it’s the wonderful characters that make you smile and laugh… maybe it’s sister george michael.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. the equalizer — i fucking love queen latifah. she is awesome as the man badass lead in this, she’s smart and resourceful and she uses that to help people in her community and make things right when the law falls short. most of the main cast are black women and a lot of the guests and secondary characters are also people of color and women. ohh also gay auntie saw whatttttttttttttttt. i know this show doesn’t get the greatest overall ratings and people really judge it often but it’s a show about the injustices in the world with a dynamic and diverse cast, I really really love watching it.
Tumblr media

Fic Finder
~*~
1. Hey Mojo! I hope you had a good New Year! I was wondering if you could help me find a fic. Basically instead of Wen Chao throwing Wei Ying in the Burial Mounds he has him killed and hung from his ribbon in Nightless City. Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji find him, but Wei Ying is a resentful spirit and ends of possessing Jiang Cheng (with his permission I think) in order to finally get his revenge on Wen Chao. I've been looking everywhere and its like the fic just disappeared. Thank you for your time!
FOUND? Missing Pieces by LixyStrange (T, 10k, WangXian, ghost, Death, Revenge, biggest fear, Dogs, hounds, Gore, Dismemberment, revenge is a dish best served searing hot, Heartbreak, Hurt No Comfort, Bittersweet Ending)

2. Hi.  I'm searching for a fic which may or may not be a part of a series. What I remember is that LQR is teaching WWX and is irritated by him. WWX has also adopted A-Yuan. LQR is teaching because his core has some problem. It is a modern AU. IIRC LQR convinces WWX to write a thesis.  That is all I can remember. Thank you for your time and help.
FOUND!....LQR fic anon here, I found the fic I was looking for it's CSI: Gusu Edition by Stratisphyre (M, 39k, wangxian, lan qiren & wei wuxian, 3 works, series in progress)

3. Hii, id like to ask abt a fic wherein there's a problem with the whole mxy resurrecting wwx thing and because of that the ghost mxy kept on trying to kill wwx so that he can prevent a painful death. And it turns out that Wen Qing is alive and have saved WWX by transferring JC's core to WWX. huhu just cant remember the titleeee.

4. Hi! Hope you're having a lovely day and all is going well in the new year. I haven't really sent an ask (well ever) so I hope I'm not offending you but I've been looking for a fic for ages. It's set post canon and I remember a major plot point was that wei ying had a collection of (very sad!) letters he kept in a box addressed to lan zhan that he never sent. The box I believe was cursed, and I think ghosts were following him around, or at least lingering in the places he had frequented. Juniors were there as well, and Sizhui reads the letters which causes a sort of blow up, where he asks that if Wei Ying feels so awful on his own why couldnt he come to live with his family (this outburst and intrusion into his privacy I think is explored in a second part of a series?)  If you can help I would be super grateful!!!

I have tried to use simple tags like time travel and abo, but i didn’t find it. Hope I didn’t explain it too bad😅

10. hi mojo, thanks for your blog! I found some good fics thanks to you and so many reminders of great fics to re-read! If you have time, I'm looking for a WX fic that I read some time ago on AO3. Somebody (JC?) erased WWX from existence. The sunshot campaign happens, does not go well. Then WWX is summoned back, and teams up with NHS to fix the war. I think at some point JYL and babyJL are saved by WWX from being held hostage by the Wens. LWJ has missed WWX and joins the team. Hope you can find it! ~ @vasterthanempires

12.  Hiii! So glad you're back, hoping you have an incredible new year full of health and happiness! I was wondering if you or anyone might recognise this fic? It's a Canon AU, where Jiang Yanli and JGY become friends and he gets to hold Jin Ling, and I'm pretty sure it's a nobody-you-care-about-dies fic. I know there's a scene where JGY thinks about how powerful WWX is, but he knows WWX doesnt trust him so he plans to stick close to Yanli as like a "If i die, she'll be sad, so Wei Wuxian will protect me as long as I don't hurt anyone he cares about" deal. It's wangxian but i dont think the romance was the focus, more a bamf!WWX. Unfortunately thats all i can remember so any help would be really appreciated! ~ @warriorwerewolfheart

13.   Hello, I don't really remember much from the fic other than its a wangxian romance and I remember a scene when the two are in the library (as teens) and wwx asked lwj to read to him. The chapter (or maybe the whole fic) was from lwj's pov as he thought something along the lines of "nobody liked his voice and the other kids wouldn't listen when he read in class." Thank youuuu, if you can find it or just for looking anyway.
~*~
14.   I’m looking for this fix where Mo xuanyu was the Yiling Patriachs disciple and they were called to help the sects take care of the Wens. I don’t remember. Whole lot it was a long fic the main ship was wangxian
~*~
15.   Hello! I’m going in circles trying to find something I am very sure I read and did not imagine..Wangxian as members of a mountaineering club. A misunderstanding happens, one gets jealous and rushes out into the snow. It ends with Wei Ying being picked up on the road and rescued by Lan Xichen and Lan Qiren, and wangxian reunites. Does that sound remotely familiar or did my brain somehow combined a few fics into one…

16.   Hi! I am looking for a specific fic. It takes place during the cloud recess study arc. All I can really remember is that Wei Ying and Lan Zhan start meditating together to merge their spiritual energy and eventually they are able to actually merge together into one being. I do remember that they merged together during the Wen attack and Wei Ying used talismans on both Jin Zixuan an Lan Qiren. I hope I'm not combining fics together LOL. Thank you!

17.  Hi! I was recently told there is a time travel fic where LWJ travels back in time by possessing the body of his younger self and each time he time-travels he has to sacrifice a part of the next timeline LWJ's golden core. Does this ring any bells? Do you happen to know it? ~ @vikreads

18.   hi i’m looking for a canon divergence fic; the nie sect ends up helping wwx and the wen remnants, wq found a way to help wwx restore his core and i specifically remember wq, maybe wn and another nie sect doctor having to heal wwx’s past wounds first and so when he stopped using the resentful energy they all opened up, both lz and jc were there

19.   Hi! I’m new to your blog (it’s been a god send by the way I’ve been stuck rereading my favorites) but I was hoping you could help me find a fic I forgot to bookmark? Basically it’s a pseudo time travel fix it but Adult LWG goes to the past meeting up with young WWX while young LWJ goes to the future meeting up with Adult WWX. Then the pairings switch places, then both pairings end up in future where they give advice and do the obligatory teasing! However it’s a bit different in the young Wangxian universe is a divergent universe. Something to do with the Nie family tree? I really hope you can find it! Thank you so much for your help and all your wonderful fic recs!

Hi, momoliee....Thanks for answering my ask....If you don't mind me asking, who are your top 5 (or top 3) favorite couples from all of the danmei novel that you've finished reading until now? And why do you like them? Sorry if you've answered this before.....
Usually when it comes to ships, to me it’s always more about how much I enjoy the dynamic itself rather than the depth so here goes :
1. Ranwan : two lifetimes. three personas. three separate stories. beautiful. full of love. We have the tragedy and angst that’s Chu Fei and Taxian jun with all its pain, we have the bastard mo ran 1.0 and his obsession with Shi mei while Chu Wanning watches from afar in pain and self deprecation and longing. And we have mo ran 2.0 and his gentlemanly respectful manner trying to cover up the beast within as well as the flustered and overwhelmed but nevertheless happy cwn. They give you angst, jealousy, possessiveness, sweetness, fluff, respect, sex. One chapter mo ran is preparing a whole feast based off of cwn’s tastes, the next hes fucking him brainless before one of them is somehow dying or getting his soul torn out while the other cries while holding him. Basically it’s a full package stuffed into one ship💀. That’s of course without even going into the analytical depth of their love and relationship and all that but let’s keep it here.
2. Fei Du x Lou Wenzhou : I remember while reading the novel I thought, this is one of the hottest steamiest slowest of slow burns ever without even the explicit sex. Fei du constantly invading lwz’s space, constantly flirting with him, constantly making his moves and the moment lwz so much as gives him a sly glance, watch him fall down the stairs cause he wasn’t expecting THAT. Their relationship revolved a lot around then sizing up each other and constantly trying to piss each other off. And then finally, our sociopathic little boy at last found someone to love him and care for him after all these years of suffering and pain and— pls theyre just wonderful ok.
3. Cezhou (from qjj) : enemies to lovers need I say more. Their dynamic started off very very fun, I’d laugh at how they’d act around each other, feeling like each was trying to pull at the pigtails of the other with all the mocking and pettiness. Then it’s slowly progressed to romance and their romance is so so sweet and so so sensual. It’s full of love and feelings and emotions and you can just feel it. Even the sex feels so…loving idk theyre just so in love it’s heart wrenching
4. Wangxian : pls we have the class clown/trouble maker x the good stiff rule abiding student and who doesn’t love a bit of that. What I love about them is that they really understand each other without any words needed. Wwx doesnt have to explicitly tell him why he did what he did, cause lwj knows and lwj understands. Lwj doesn’t have to smile or raise his voice for wwx to catch that he’s happy or figure out that he’s angry, he can just always tell. There’s this communication without actually communicating that many couple no matter how much they blow each other’s ears while talking, they can never reach that level of understanding. Idk they have a very very very deep and genuine connection and it’s just, it’s nice.
5. Hualian : they’re warmth, they’re healing, they’re home. They feel like a sweet cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day. Them healing together makes me feel like a part of me is healing too. Maybe it’s the everlasting love or all the quotes like, “you made me realize how simple it is to be happy” but, I’m just very fond of them.
Honorary mentions : Ximang !! And yushipei :D

Why is that 9 minute boat scene the literal best?
That’s not my question, because that answer is very obvious (it just is).
But there are so many things happening for those 9 minutes and they’re all happening at once and it’s _a_lot_. Almost everything those two say feels like there’s an iceberg of stuff happening underneath it. It’s like a scene from an Ingmar Bergman movie or something. Their dynamic is so addicting, it really swaps out the so-called-perfect two-dimensional couple ‘ideal’ so many of us have been force fed all our lives and replaces it with something that’s actually interesting. And awesome. And badass. GGDD make me believe it’s possible for couples to be badass. Thank you GGDD.
My question is! I wanted to ask if you would ever do a hypothetical clowning breakdown of the boat scene? Like a beat for beat analytic take. What their motivations might actually be despite what they’re saying. What’s being resolved. What’s being poked at. Etc etc etc. Because the constant switching from passive aggressiveness to sincerity to jabbing to performativeness is so fast and so fascinating I would just really like to read your deeper take on all of it.
But that also sounds like a lot of work because that scene is _a_lot. So I understand if your answer is “no, let’s all just enjoy it.”
Thank you again for all you do!
This is in reference to a previous post.
Fake, fan fiction, CPN.
I don't think there's much subtext to a lot of what they're saying. Mostly they are just killing time with a bit of lighthearted banter. I can give a bit of a breakdown of a few of the things they’re talking about that people might not know some of the background on, though.
At the beginning where GG is about to say something to DD but stops himself, and then tells DD it’s something he says to Jiang Cheng a lot - what he’s talking about there is the phrase "Hard as a dead duck’s beak” to describe someone who is stubborn. It’s a phrase he won’t use on DD because GG is really superstitious and he won’t say anything involving death or injury around DD, who is involved in dangerous sports (racing, skateboarding).
Then they talk about GG ‘not being there yesterday’. That’s because he was also filming Joy of Life at the time, and that schedule conflicted a bit with The Untamed, so he had to do a bit of juggling during filming to be available for both dramas. DD makes fun of GG, but uses stronger language than entirely necessary, which is just so funny. They are so unhinged with each other.
(And I see this part as a bit similar to the ‘trash boyfriend’ bickering in a different BTS video, where GG uses stronger language than entirely necessary to dig at DD a bit about LWJ’s lack of support for WWX earlier in the story. They tend to use exaggerated language with each other, which is a further sign of the closeness of their relationship. They couldn't get away with being so harsh with people they aren't very close to.)
Then they start a bit of a pissing contest over who can be the most apologetic/exaggeratedly gracious, which is hilarious.
After that it’s all pretty straightforward for a long time. Then comes one of my favorite moments, when GG pounds his hand on his heart and pleads with DD, “Wang Yibo, ask yourself, are you human?” For some interesting and hilarious insight on that I recommend reading this series of posts by @potteresque-ire.
They end up in the bottom of the boat together, and GG asks DD if he needs a tissue. This is likely a HILARIOUS reference to the fact that they look like they're squatting to take a shit.
Then they start talking about dancing, and there are a couple of things that stood out to me about this:
DD shows some restraint and patience here and doesn't openly mock GG for some of the uninformed things he says about dance moves, etc. He really lets GG off the hook a lot more than he does other people.
GG asks DD if he wears knee pads, which DD scoffs at. But later, during SDOC3 we see DD wearing knee pads a lot. LOL. Fans speculate that's GG's influence.
Then they start talking about who has more experience, and this is when DD really starts with his soft baby talk voice at GG, which totally kills me every time.
Then DD brings up GG's skill as a designer, and GG scoffs at it and says it's useless. DD says, "You can design your own logo." Little did they know at the time, but GG ends up doing exactly that, and it's a really beautiful one.
Tumblr media
I won't even get into detail on the things GG is believed by fans to have designed for DD, but yeah, his skill didn't prove useless at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then they bicker a bit about pretty straightforward stuff. They talk about the lines they have to memorize at one point. There's actually a photo circulating around somewhere, comparing the script DD's voiceover actor had vs the one GG's voiceover actor had. DD's was a few pages, while GG's was a thick booklet. LOL. I wish I could find that picture for you but I guess I didn't save it.

I’m here for the ‘swords not as pets’ agenda. Swords as cars: solid, get you from place to place, potentially dangerous, customizable, something people name. Wwx losing his license taking the fall for a mistake jc made (idk, dui maybe?) and just choosing to mod the hell out of a self-balancing scooter or segway or something so it goes dangerously fast. Alternatively: spending 3 months inventing the first functional actual levitating hoverboard, with an insane top speed. 3 months in the (1/2)
Tumblr media
sawdfert this is delightful!! i saw segway and i immediately started wheezing,, there was no time for laughing i went straight to the wheezing. i think it would make more sense if wwx lost his car and got a motorcycle? like hoverboards and segways are cool but motorcycles have that big reputation of being dangerous and there’s the whole ‘rebellious teen gets a motorcycle and becomes a delinquent’ thing? like motorcycles are fast and if you crash it’s so much worse than if you were in a car and there’s no airbags or anything. but also?? wwx rocking up to school on a segway while playing his flute like the shittiest entrance ever? iconic. but let’s stick with chenqing as a motorcycle/scooter (motorcycle-esque scooter not the ones that try and take out your ankles).
okay so all the major sects are super rich so in a modern au it would make sense for all the sect heirs to get cars. i’m not saying that jc and wwx complain about jzx being stuck-up bc he was given a porsche for his birthday even though they were also given cars for their birthdays,,, but i am. at first it would have been this major point of contention between yzy and jfm bc wwx isn’t even their son so why is he getting a car too but wwx is like ah it’s so i can drive jc and jyl to school! you wouldn’t want their cars being left outside the school all day would you? someone in my maths class had their car get keyed and it was super expensive to fix,, and yzy is like yes wwx may have a car only to protect my children from parking hassles,, also wwx must pay for his own parking. so wwx and jc both get given cars for their bdays.
now wwx gets bored easily,, so you could translate him being a cultivation genius to him being really good at driving. im talking that jc is still getting the hang of switching gears and wwx is out there casually drifting around corners. (this does mean he has to get new tyres really frequently but he’s friends with wen ning, whose family runs the mechanics that wwx likes to go to so he just helps around the shop for a bit and gets a discount (yes its the family discount)). anyway wwx really enjoys driving, also! he just rocks up to wen ning’s place one day and is like dude, i wanna pimp my ride, wanna help and wen ning is like heck yeah. so wwx pays for some upgrades with his own money and he spends hours doing some custom work to make it look cool,,
it’s all going well until wwx and jc go to wen chao’s party one night and jc gets absolutely sloshed,,, like completely hammered. wwx had walked in, grabbed a cup of lemonade or something and was gonna hang with his friends but lwj was there for some reason so he spent the entire night talking to him in the back garden. which means that when jc wanted to leave he saw wwx hanging out with lwj and went ew gross and just decided to drive home himself. he crashes and when wwx comes home the next day jc gets super pissed at him bc he was meant to be the designated driver and if he hadnt been screwing around with lwj jc wouldnt have tried to drive home and now his parents will be super pissed and wwx is like woah chill my grandmother is a mechanic and she can fix this up just give me a couple of days.
so wwx goes to baoshan sanren mechanics (which is just the back entrance to the wen sibling’s mechanics) and spends the next three days getting rid of all of his customisations and mods so his car looks exactly like jc’s. does he cry when he has to spend like five mins spraying the inside of the car with axe body spray to get the jc stench going on? maybe a little. but he does it and returns the car to jc! and jc is like oh wow my car is fixed, your grandma is a miracle worker and wwx is like haha yeah (:
anyway wwx mysteriously and suddenly discovers a passion for public transport,, it’s a good way to stay humble jiang cheng, he says, also i used all my petrol money buying porn from nhs or whatever. anyway wwx is doing the whole pt to school thing but then one afternoon wen chao and wzh find him and idk maybe the party got too rowdy so the cops came and wc got in trouble with his dad? he assumes wwx called the cops on him so he shoves wwx into his car and drives him out to the middle of no where and dumps him in the burial mounds scrap metal recycling place or whatever.
the train line isn’t running that day and there’s no phone service either so wwx is stuck there overnight. he gets super bored. so what does he do? he finds an abandoned scooter and starts scavenging for parts. he’s not expecting it to actually work but by the time the sun rises he’s found some actually decent parts and he thinks that he could get it working. tbh he kinda forgets to go back home and just walks into town to buy some food and then goes back and continues fiddling with the scooter. he doesnt live there for the three months but the people in yiling just accept that this random teenager has all but moved into their scrap heap and adopt him anyway. so he goes and visits the burial mounds every day after school so none of his friends or family really see him anymore.
until! one day he rocks up to school on his scooter. scooters,, are kinda like sad pathetic motorcycles,, but wwx mods his scooter with like a powerful engine and new steering and everything so people see it and go oh! a motorcycle! even though it’s not actually (can you do that with a scooter? idk but suspend your disbelief pls). so lwj is like hnnngg wwx in a leather jacket on a motorcycle but also wei ying, stop riding a motorcycle, *enter statistics about motorcycle crashes here* and wwx is like no! you cant take chenqing away from me. and jc is pissed bc they were meant to be brothers and have matching cars and be able to work on them and give them cool paint jobs together! but now wwx has this bike which has been modded to hell and back and refuses to drive his car bc it’s not as cool as his bike. so we get to have the whole ‘everyone thinks wwx is doing something dumb and dangerous’ bc he has a motorcycle and why isnt he just driving his car anymore? but we also get to keep some of the nuance of the demonic cultivation bc yeah it’s more dangerous than driving in a car but wwx doesnt have a car anymore and scooters are a loottt safer than motorcycles (if my two seconds of research is correct).
so! wwx won’t abandon chenqing and he did most of his work using scrap parts so he goes back to the wens and is like wen ning my best bro check her out and he’s like oooooooh and they start modding chenqing together. wen qing doesnt know why wwx is constantly over at their shop all the time but jc keeps arguing with wwx and wwx grows more distant with his family and friends bc he’s making ~bad decisions~ and a motorcycle is a gateway to idk teen delinquent shenanigans like smoking and doing graffiti so he’s kinda ousted from respectable rich people society and wen qing is like i have two (2) brothers now and they’re adorable not that i’ll ever tell them that. and wwx modding chenqing got him a reputation in yiling like everyone saw him walk in one day and then drive out with this sexy sexy bike so people start coming to him for mods and stuff and wwx earns the title yiling patriarch and wen ning, his trusted best friend and helper, gets called the ghost general bc idk he helps a lot but the customers never meet him. so they become some dynamic duo for car and bike mods!
anyway,, yzy delivers him an ultimatum one day: the car or the bike (or more accurately: the family or the bike) but wwx can’t drive the car anymore so he just gets quietly disowned and drops out of school. (we’ll save jzxuan the suffering in this au he can keep his car). he goes to the wens and theyre like hey whats up? wait no you cant live in a scrap heap,, not even if you buy a tent,,, just live with us please. and then wwx gets adopted by the wens and idk i want them to have a happy ending so wwx and wn go off and do some actual mechanic and modding training with some expert (sqdcfgt imagine if it was the real baoshan sanren who just happened to be in the market for some apprentices and saw wwx and wn’s work and was like them and then later realised it was her grandson). so they get their apprenticeship and they disappear off somewhere for a year or two - when wwx had been disowned he’d deleted everyone’s contacts and was like if they text me i’ll add them back but im not gonna have a contact list cemetery. (no one contacts him).
eventually the 13 years pass and wwx has been helping the wens raise their little nephew a-yuan who is showing a real aptitude for being a mechanic even though he’s just a kid and just generally enjoying the quiet life of being a mechanic while doing fun mods and lil baby projects. then one day lwj’s car breaks down while he’s driving through the area and he calls up the local mechanic and guess who rocks up? it’s wwx. and then we get to have them dance around each other and wwx being like lwj doesnt trust me, he’s just sitting here and watching me work all day ): and lwj is like dont let him go dont let him go dont let him go,, and eventually they get their romance but this is way too long already so im im gonna end this here
i didnt mean to make this an entire au but i adored your idea so much anon so i kinda had to!!

anyways since @pinstripedaiso asked me to elaborate on my post where i mentioned that cql would be very different if jin ling had been the main character instead of wei wuxian, and @emilu-reads-mdzs made some comments similar to what i was thinking, so let me attempt to:
to begin, jin ling is technically the ideal candidate for main character when it comes to typical tropes. that is to say that he is an orphan, whose parents were killed by his uncle (i’ve found evil uncle to be a recurring trope, though maybe not a popular one) and a teenager (coming of age angst hello).
an important note here is that jin ling also lacks motherly love (usually, the main character has no mother, if they haven’t lost both parents). while his uncles fill the quota for fatherly love, the closest thing jin ling has to a mother would be qin su, and who knows if they had any interactions at all.
also as a teenager, his narration would be a lot different! we’d have more fun antics, especially with the other juniors, and see the development of his budding friendships.
secondly, we would have little backstory and set up. instead of the condensed backstory we were given, flashbacks would likely be populated throughout cql at a more even pace and slowly unveiled, so that the watchers would find everything out at the same speed as jin ling, rather than coming in with predisposed knowledge.
if we got any backstory at all to set up the story, we likely would be predisposed to view wwx as a villain, especially since any backstory relating to jin ling would be around the deaths of his parents.
thirdly, the story’s focus would be on the younger generation, which is to say jin ling and the other juniors (sizhui, jingyi, zizhen, etcetera, with probably some new characters as well if we’re going there). this would be unique and different because while the older generation lived through the war and the difficulties that came with it, the younger generation is left with the shockwaves they faced growing up in childhood. for jin ling, this is losing his parents to the yiling patriarch, or for sizhui it’s having few memories of the time before gusu lan (or being a wen in the future, when he recovers such memories).
fourthly, jin ling’s perspective to the people around him, specifically his uncles. jin ling, of course, has no prior knowledge of jin guangyao before he was jin guangyao, and neither would the audience. this loss of a crucial part of jin guangyao’s narrative (i.e. his time as meng yao and after for some of the part) would likely alter the audience’s viewpoint towards jin guangyao a lot.
on that note, we would have likely no knowledge that mo xuanyu is wei wuxian, seeing as jin ling meets him in the woods for the first time. this gives us a different lense to view mo xuanyu through as a character (and maybe more backstory on the actual mo xuanyu? which i’ve always been curious about, as it’s kind of glossed over and summarized quickly in canon), as well as his interactions with lwj, jc, etcetera.
due to this, the backstory would slowly unravel throughout the series at a much slower pace, and some of it would likely not be addressed at all.
this would also include more domestic scenes of jin ling with both of his uncles that would let us see different sides of both jiang cheng and jin guangyao.
fifthly, the main relationship would likely be between jin ling and wei wuxian (or mo xuanyu), or his relationship with both of his uncles, rather than wangxian (which would likely be background). this sets up a dynamic i personally love, which is the whole reveal of the person you began to like and trust actually being the person you hate (or are supposed to; especially when it comes to the person who murdered your family, however much it was accidental).
jin ling’s main conflict throughout the story would be set up as the need to take revenge for his family versus the desperate need for more family or familial love, something he lacks despite having such a wide number of uncles. the betrayal he feels when he discovers his uncle is actually his other uncle all along (that is to say, mo xuanyu has been wei wuxian for the duration of their time spent together again) is devastating, enough that he stabs him. if jin ling was the main character, we would focus on that a lot more. there’s also the point that canon kind of glosses over how jin ling actually feels about mo xuanyu, or how he felt at least (i know some fanon takes on this, and while it’s unknown if jin ling and mxy actually interacted much during the time mxy was at lanling jin, jin ling does have a predisposed reaction towards mxy that speaks of familiarity + the fact that he recognizes him, so they likely have shared some history). so it’s interesting to see how his reaction would be additionally towards the fact that the mo xuanyu he knew is basically dead.
there’s also the fact that jin ling slowly learns that jin guangyao is not who he thought he was either. though i think he might have gotten a feeling, i don’t think jin ling ever actually knew the truth about his uncle until guanyin temple, and even then he slowly finds everything out after, this person his beloved uncle was and who he saw being at such a discrepancy. i would say that jin ling is the one most shell shocked throughout present canon, albeit lan xichen - though while lan xichen has one shock, jin ling has two (reveal of wwx’s true identity and also jin guangyao’s true self).
that’s all very emotionally devastating. on that note, the sixth point would be that canon wouldn’t end where canon ends (i.e. wangxian’s parting), but would likely focus on jin ling’s ascension to sect leader before ending. and, hey, it might not even end there, especially if you cut out the whole backstory nonsense that comes from us being shown wwx’s point of view for a good part of canon. we would see how he copes with everything he has to deal with.
tl;dr: little to no wwx backstory, erasure of a lot of knowledge the audience knows going into canon, focus on jin ling + the juniors + his uncles rather than wangxian, and lots of emotional devastation.

I was scrolling through my dash, as one does, and saw .gifs of the scene where the juniors are defending WWX to Sect leader Yao, and I was just smiling and thinking “ah, the kids are all right this time, it will be better”. And then I realized that ... the kids were all right the previous generation, too? And it would have been so easy to see them band together, especially after everything?
Hear me out. In essence, there’s no difference between the juniors and the ... OG juniors. (We need a name for them. Is there a name for that generation??? Cause we have the parents, and we have the juniors, what are WWX&co named??? Whatever, I’m sticking with OG juniors.) Each of these groups went through shitty situations, the OGs arguably through worse with the war and all. But before the war, we have 2 major bonding moments: the Cloud Recesses classes, and the Wen indoctrination. What if they actually bonded together, and their relationships were more flushed out? (Keep in mind I only saw the live-action drama, so that’s what I’m basing everything on.)
So, Cloud Recesses. You have the Jiangs, and then NSH, LWJ, WN and WQ added to the group, more or less willingly. JZX is still being a little bitch, but whatever, he’s there too, along with MianMian, who is arguably his biggest contribution. I will admit, there are ... levels ... of closeness. But you have the three gremlins getting together, and LWJ pulled in (again, levels), you have star-struck WN and tough WQ (who, need I remind you, took care of JYL at least once, which I bet the latter will not forget). You have LQR spitting blood because the boy is definitely his mother’s son, but LXC smiling indulgently, seeing his little brother finally make friends. (And LQR will remember that CSR was mischief made human form, and her son definitely follows in her footsteps, but both of them wanted always to help and not destroy, so there is definitely something wrong with the accusations that WWX wants to take over the world. And LXC will remember the Wen boy who stayed behind to save one of their own, and the Wei boy who dived in to help them both, and will not believe the grim tales of the fierce Ghost General and the Yiling Patriarch.)
After CR, WWX/LWJ/JC/NHS have their little murder adventure, with a WQ cameo.  LWJ is added to the gremlin dynamic and sure, he might not feel like he fits in at first, but WWX cannot seem to stay away from him, and he suffers in silence with JC while WWX is being an idiot and risking his life, omg, stop that, get down you demented cat, and then finds that there’s a certain bond little brothers with big brothers larger-than-life have, and maybe having two more friends is. Acceptable. They’re all supposed to be 15-16 at this point, teenage boys that started this adventure fully confident, at least on the outside. And then Xue Yang happens. And this is, I think, one of the biggest turning point for these four. Because, to a certain degree, all of them rely on rules. Their own, if nothing else. And here is a guy who just ... wants to see the world burn. He kills with no remorse, admits it gleefully, and is just awful in so many ways. This is their first brush with how brutal the outside world is, when they start to doubt themselves and their convictions. But then! XXC and SL appear, and it’s a breath of fresh air! Because there are terrible people and worse situations, but as long as they hold fast in their beliefs and work together and trust eachother, they can beat them!
So they go to the Unclean Realm, and they meet Daddy NMJ. And he’s been watching them approach, and he sees his little brother laughing with the boy in black, he sees him cackling while the one in purple is swinging his fists around; he sees him share a smile with Xichen’s little brother while the other two are laughing so hard they’re bent over so far they’re almost falling to the ground. And he doesn’t show it, because the Red Blade Master is gruff, and tough, and mighty, but in his heart he’s already adopted these kids who include his baby brother in their circle with so much ease, it’s hard to imagine him on the outside. (And in the future, when people are yelling about WWX’s darkness, this is the image he will have in his head: four boys being innocent and happy and his, how dare you try to touch them?!)
Cloud Recesses burns. LXC is nowhere. And then. The biggest paradigm shift - the indoctrination. Everyone arrives in Nightless City. The three OG gremlins watch LWJ back to his jade statue default, they lose their swords, they are on the same side with JZX and WWX/JC don’t know which one of these frustrates them more. It should be the looming war. It’s probably the JZX part. Now, I assume they spend at least a few weeks there, I don’t remember if it’s mentioned. But WWX always tried to get in front, to catch WC’s attention. (Because he’s the disposable one, right? High enough in status that WC is satisfied when he gets to punish him, but not a sect heir, not someone who will bring down a whole sect if he dies. Little does he know.) So don’t tell me that the others don’t rally around him. (Discreetly of course. They learn fast that he just gets more protective if others are hurt because of him.) There’s nothing stronger than a common enemy, and the Wens and WC, specifically, are definitely that. So they watch, and they remember WWX being beaten, whipped, humiliated, all so that others will not be. Not to mention that one night that he doesn’t tell even JC about, because it would crush his little brother to know he couldn’t keep his promise. They remember him staying behind so that they have a chance to escape the murder turtle. (And after the war, when the adults will try to damn WWX for being too arrogant and too prideful, the OG juniors will remember the kid who stood up to the Wen clan and has the scars to prove it, and all to protect them. Where was Jin Guangshan? Where was Sect leader Yao?)
Lotus pier burns. WWX disappears. JC and LWJ look for him for 3 months. And then. And then he comes back. And he burns the Sun to the ground, using dark cultivation and corpses and no sword, and everything that they were taught not to do, ever. And he succeeds where everyone else fails.
Afterwards, when the dust settles but not really, when life comes back to normal but not quite, when things become too boring apparently, the young ones see their elders muttering. And gossip. And look a bit too much at WWX, too closely. But this was a generation forged in the fires of war. They were not like their parents, who had time to figure out their shit and then go to battle, no. They were kids when it all started. There are no more kids amongst them now.
So when the minor sect leaders, subtly encouraged by JGS and JGY, talk about the “young” LC being a leader at such a young age with honeyed words that hide rot, NMJ and LXC rise to his defense. Both of them became sect leaders at young ages, both of them know how hard it is. LQR rises as well and the older ones expect him to be on their side, but they forget LQR got entrusted with a clan and 2 children that he was not supposed to have, so he will never demean another who was in an even worse position, but rose to the occasion despite everything that happened. The Lans promote knowledge and learning above all, and many people can learn a lot from Sandu Shengshou, wouldn’t you agree Sect leader Yao?
When the Jin sect complains about the Stygian Tiger Seal, rumors begin to spread from behind hand painted fans that they are after the artifacts of other sects. After all, does WWX not belong to YungmengJiang? Therefore, do his creations not belong to the sect as well? Who’s to say they won’t go after the treasures of the other sects next?
When JYL destroys Jin Zixun at Phoenix Mountain, JZX steps up to the plate and stands behind his fiancee. WWX is obviously her little brother that she cares deeply about, he will be his future brother-in-law, and honestly Zixun where were you even during the war?? You have demands now because?? Go shoot some arrows and chill. (JC is just standing there with crossed arms, looking at Jin Zixun without blinking, keeping a tight grip over Zidian who is the definition of  “lemme at him!!!” Jiejie doesn’t like it when he slices and dices people, although she’s not leaving much for him to chew on. It’s the most fun he’s had in years.)
When JGY sweetly suggest that there might be a viper poised to strike them in the back, NHS innocently asks “but San-Ge, didn’t your blow to WRH’s back help us win the war?” (NMJ has never loved his brother more than when he roasts JGY. Really, he could cry with pride. Here, A-Sang, there’s that fan you wanted. I ordered new birdcages to be build back home, you can have all the birds you want. Training is ... postponed.)
When news about the labor camps and the slaughtered Wens are revealed, many stay silent. A few of them cheer. But there are also a few that remember a boy willing to save someone from drowning, willing to risk his life to save the dead bodies of two parents. They remember the best doctor of their generation helping them heal, and rest, and save their loved ones. They remember that they are not the only children who were taken by this war, that they were not the only ones forced to make awful choices that haunt their dreams. They remember that it’s easy to stand back, but yet there was always one who stood up for the others, who would stand up for them, so how can they not stand with him now when he most need it?
WWX is not alone. The YungmengJiang clan is not alone. These kids went through hell and back in the past couple of years, and they will be damned if they will let another rise in WRH’s place. This ends now.

Notes for I Have Always Loved The Door (pt 1)
I Have Always Loved The Door is the Wen Qing/Mianmian fic that all the wlw wanted but canon could not in any way make happen
This is part one of three, i’m sorry, but it is a 30k fic and i’ve never written anything this long. it’s like. six months of my life. annotations are gonna be longer, too.
What is this fic About? Uh. Lots. Mostly your relationship with your past and your future. making choices about what you carry with you into your life.
title is from Charly Bliss’ “Percolator” but like. the rest of the fic is in no way related to the song. Just the lyrics “I have always loved the door/but I will always love you more/I love metaphors” fit well for the wen qing mood
it is a fucking CRIME that wen qing died, and while i’m happy that luo qingyang got a happy ending with a soft man who just wants to make her happy, i think she deserves more. so i gave her a fancy job
i struggled with the outline for this so much until i realized that mianmian’s canon arc is partially about saying goodbye to your home/family because you no longer fit there + it’s not a great place anymore. and that’s so close 2 wen qing’s
so that drove a great part of the plot, and helped shape the youya/tuzai bit
ch 1
the first chapter is so funny and then nothing ever approaches it, i’m so sorry i got ur hopes up with the shennans TTnTT
i hate most of my writing after it’s up but i still like this chapter. wen qing being a doctor, nmj knowing his place, mianmian cursing loudly
“If you’ve been knuckles-deep in me, you can consider yourself a friend” i spend a lot of time in this fic trying to kill wen qing with Lesbianism, but honestly that’s just to make up for mianmian killing herself with lesbianism.
this was b4 i decided to care how i ended chapters haha
ch 2
i’m proud honestly of this fic alternating perspective, bc it forced me to learn to write more distinct voices.
“are you eating enough red meat?” “in the unclean realm?”
if i had 2 be in a Great Sect i would 100% want to be in the big sexy sword jock sect but unfortunately i’m a vegetarian
please think of me, an average-sized gay, with noodle arms, pushing away all the giant cooks and self-appointed nie aunties, who are trying to shove meat into my mouth
like you know how cats avoid the bath??? and their people are like “jesus fuck how is this 10 lb animal defeating me, i’m huge and strong and also have thumbs”??? that, except it’s an average sized sword gay fighting ten RIPPED aunties holding out beef
i do love the mianqing dynamic i created here and i’m not sure i kept it up but WHATEVER this is about annotations not about editing
mianmian: god FUCK the jin clan, the jin clan sux. wen qing: hmmmmmmmmmm
i think mianmian’s three older sisters might show up in a future work in the series
yeah, i fell in love with this au, there will be at least one epilogue.
ch 3
oh ho ho!!! it’s the beginning of Sword Content!!!
i watched so many videos of dao work vs jian work and then i ignored all of it!!!
by that i mean “there were only like two decent-quality videos on dao work that i found on youtube and i couldn’t study them hard enough to get what i wanted”
someone trying to correct your practice with boring, irrelevant suggestions??? it’s extremely likely, it’s happened to me multiple times, i straight up stopped practicing outside bc of it
please, men, i’m begging you. if you see me doing martial arts, rather than correcting me, ask “oh cool, what are you doing? ah, i do [this art]” and like. talk with me like i’m a human
not to be A Bitch but there is a 70% chance that i’ve actually studied more marital arts than you, on account of most ppl abandoning within a few years, and me practicing aikido for more than a fucking decade
god swinging a weapon full-speed at someone and stopping inches from their head??? a Fun Time
mianmian’s doing it as a big dick energy move
but in my school we just trusted each other to not fuck up.
im too gay to want any “”””homophobia””” or “””discovering you’re gay”””” or “””coming out”””” plots, i just wanna fast forward to the “”””i wanna kiss a girl””” bit
OH MAN i forgot wwx’s voice in wen qing’s head.
“even after his death the yiling patriarch managed to annoy her” i love wen qing
ch 4
IT’S THE MEMORIAL DINNER CHAPTER
memorial dinners are an important part of my household’s mourning process sorry
“she waved her hand to indicate the entirety of his use of demonic cultivation, fall from grace, and mass murder” mood wen qing. fucking mood.
oh my god im rereading this and seeing where i misspelled shit ugh. sorry lwj
so sometimes i’m vague about food and that’s because the only food i can think of when i’m writing is pork. i just. can’t remember what other foods u can eat. pork and also buns (but meat buns) soup? never heard of her. chicken? what is that??? piles of vegetables??? no one eats that obviously
please remember that im vegetarian and not only do i not eat pork, what i do eat is piles of vegetables
ah yes!!! time for mianmian to say prisons are for burning!!!!
our girls are both radical leftists sorry not sorry
acab, reproductive rights, prisons are for burning, capitalism is an inherently exploitative system, unionize your workplace
“tip your servers well” -- wen qing
wwx, shouting from beyond the grave: GET SOME, GIRLS!!!
wwx’s ghost: do y’all need anything? snacks? water? a condom? ah, love you kids, you keep me young
oh i forgot “for my local radical,” i should make sure to keep using ‘my radical’ as a cute endearment for the wives
ch 5
awwwww yeahhhhhhh trauma dreamsssss
writing jin guangyao is so fun!! and stressful!!!
fun because he never says anything straight, only through six layers of plausible deniability, and that’s just a fun exercise
fun also because i Love a Bitch.
stressful because he never says anything straight, only through six layers of plausible deniability.
the bit where he threatens to expose wen qing and mentions specifically that nmj does not like being lied to??? took me several times to perfect and im still not happy!!!
but i’m deeply proud of him sending the flame hairpiece, that’s some a+ innocent-looking menace right there, that’s the only thing on this planet i believe in anymore
i loved making up sect politics that weren’t specifically “let’s put up watchtowers” because i don’t think that happened while jgs was still alive
uh @ self why did i capitalize da-ge that’s so uncomfortable.
oh my god i just realized that jin guangyao has to watch his ex boyfriend/nie mingjue treat mianmian the way he used to be treated oh fuck
sorry i was not at all writing 3zun cinderella when i wrote this so i wasn’t in the habit of thinking about jgy being in pain and now???
get fukt jin guangyao
he 100% cries to lxc about this later
what’s that??? you say i keep writing overthinkers who are anxious and terrified of everything??? huh i’m not sure i agree and if even if you were right i’m not sure it means anything
“grumpy frog” mianmian mvp
god the flame hairpiece is one of like two whole good endings i did for this fic haha
next time: ch 6-10!!

mdzs novel review
Now that we’re in quarantine and I have an infinite amount of time on my hands, why not read a novel that’s 500k, right?
(Spoilers ahead.)
I totally fucked up my sleeping schedule by staying up for three nights in a row and sleeping four hours in the afternoon while reading it. worth it, though. Despite a few flaws that tripped me up close to the end, Mo Dao Zu Shi (The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) was a gorgeous story. Kudos to the translators for giving it to us in English.
I’ll start off by saying that this story is not for the faint of heart. The main character has very grey morals. There is self-cannibalism, gore, period-typical homophobia, corpses come to life, mentions of rape, incest, sexual content, straight up dubcon and disturbing themes all the way through. If I’d seen this tagged as such on Ao3, I definitely would have left it alone. Despite all this, there’s also some truly wonderful characters, a plot unlike anything I’ve ever read before, subtle pining, fantastic worldbuilding, magical music, found families, and!! canonly lgbt characters that get to experience all of this things in the one hundred goddamn chapters it takes for them to get together.
The Good:
Wei Wuxian. One of the most interesting characters I’ve ever encountered. How can one be so good, so happy, so giving, yet so incredibly fucking annoying? He’s so clever, but also a moron. He’s selfless, but only in regards to things and people he cares about. He has an absolutely terrible memory (god me too) and knows how to get under everyone’s skin and has killed literal thousands of people and also. He is my son. If I knew him in real life I think he wouldn’t have survived long enough to become the Yiling Patriarch but in fiction he is wonderful.
The plot: Look. This novel is longer than the first four Harry Potter books combined. You can almost think of it as two books- one set in the past, one set sixteen years later. But although it’s the longest book I’ve ever read, it never really felt boring. It was definitely confusing at times (I’ve never had to take notes on a novel before to keep everything straight in my head) but I wasn’t bored. Things just keep happening- Wei Wuxian is back from the dead!! Now there’s a creepy hand!! Now there’s a statue that can move!! Now we’re in the past!! Now we’re back in the present and there’s a castle that eats people!! Now we’re in a ghost city and there’s some freaky stuff going down!! Time for the saddest flashback of all time, and now we’re starting to put the puzzle of this dismembered person together!! All of this is interspersed with worldbuilding and character dynamics and creating a full picture of the past and- whew. It was so hard to tear myself away to sleep or eat because I just wanted to know- what’s going to happen next?
The love story: Hello, slowest of burns in the entire fucking world. I live for the enemies-to-friends-to-enemies-to-friends-to-what-are-we-to-lovers love story that this book gave me. Lan Wangji, you poor emotionally repressed disaster gay. Wei Wuxian, you blind oblivious moronic disaster bi. Somehow, they’re perfect for each other. I was really, really hesitant to read this book because I know it has roots in that specific straight-girl-writes-gay-men type of culture that is often terrible and fetishistic. There were definitely things that I disagreed with that that I’ll talk about later, but largely, stereotypes were avoided and I have to give the author credit for this relationship that managed to be so many things. I relate heavily to the type of person Lan Wangji is, and I adored watching him fall for Wei Wuxian, through Wei Wuxian’s eyes, without either of them really even realizing it. They’re the definition of what I like to call a “Red and Blue couple”- the opposites, the fire and ice, the calm and the wild, the dark and the light, the red and the blue, who complement one another so well despite being so different. They balanced each other out wonderfully. Don’t talk to me about the WangXian song or the fact that they have a child or I will start crying.
Lan Wangji: Though I love Wei Wuxian, annoying traits and all, Lan Wangji is who I heavily resonated with. He kind of reminds me of Else from Frozen?? Anyone else?? Like, his whole thing is basically “conceal don’t feel”, except what he’s concealing is the fact that he feels things so deeply. He just wants to help people, to be essentially perfect at what he does (scooby doo villian voice: and he would have gotten away with it too if it weren’t for wei wuxian) His character development from the past to present was lovely. I silently cheered for him whenever he broke the rules, or let the strict facade down for a bit.
The side characters: Literally how are there so many characters in this book who are so fleshed out that they feel like real people? Xiao XingChen, Lan SiZhui, Wen Ning, Jin Ling, Jiang Cheng and Jiang LanYi all especially stood out to me, but even beyond them, everyone had a fully explained reason and motivation for like, everything they did. Even if I hated the villains, they weren’t needlessly evil. We love a grey story.
But there were some things I didn’t like.
The Bad
The R rated stuff: Well. This is probably the weirdest critique I’ve ever had to make about a book, and maybe some of it was partly due to translation, but... the sex was out of character. I thought the general dynamic made no sense for the two of them as people and it just.... wasn’t super well written? Thankfully I was warned beforehand that the Incense Burner chapters contained content I wasn’t prepared to read, but yikes, I felt like I was reading about two different characters the second clothes started coming off. I haven’t finished the bonus chapters for this reason. The second I read the word “rape”, I had to stop. Consent is a pretty hard line for me, and I can’t do a dubcon kink. Obviously the author can do whatever the hell she wants with her characters, but I felt like she threw away their personalities for the sake of trying to write something hot (which- it wasn’t.) This is why straight people have no rights and also why I will be pretending those scenes don’t exist.
The Hatred Chapters: I do feel like all of the tension and action was sort of- let down at what was supposed to be the climactic showdown in the temple. It dragged on for so many chapters that I didn’t feel on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. That could also be due to translation. I’m not sure. Maybe I need to read the Hatred chapters again. But I did feel sort of let down in the final 20 chapters of this novel. It wasn’t enough to seriously impact how much I love the general concept, but it was disappointing.
Semi related but after 100 chapter build up, that confession could have been better. Again- maybe a translation thing.
The Nie MingJue backstory flashback: just- honestly wasn’t interesting to me. It was the only part of the novel that I really had to slog through.
Lastly - this isn’t the novel’s fault, and I am certainly grateful to the translators for all of their work translating this gigantic novel, but there were some consistent grammatical issues surrounding the dialogue tags that bugged me. I’m not sure how it is in Chinese, but in English, writing “Wei WuXian, “Nothing.””  just- isn’t correct. At the very least, you need a verb like “said”. I usually read fast enough that my brain tends to insert the word even if it’s not there, but when reading slowly, this did frequently jar me out of the story. I’d be willing to edit the entire novel just to fix these errors. But it says a lot about how good this novel is that I continued reading despite errors like this because something like that in a fic would have me closing the tab immediately.
Alright, that’s all.
Overall:
There are so many small things, little moments and lines that I loved about this story, it would take me days to list them all. The dialogue patterns from character to character were distinct. Things like the forehead ribbon were endlessly entertaining. Side plots like the A-Qing one had me in tears and I was laughing a few chapters late from drunk LWJ. The novel was just fun to read. There were errors, yes, there were disappointments, sure. But it made me feel so much. I’ve been through the entire range of human emotion while reading it, and it’s so rare to find a book that just yanks you into the universe like this one did to me. I really needed an escape this week, and this was absolutely a welcome one. If I go read it again, I’m sure I’ll find a hundred more things I like about it. Heed the warnings I’ve given, if you read it, but I absolutely adored most of this book and I’ll be thinking about it for a long time.
9/10.

untamed rant
because i have been obsessed with this show for the past week and need to release my feelings lolll
so far i’ve read the fantranslation of the novel and watched (kind of... i’ve been picking and choosing scenes to watch and skipping through a lot) to ep 37 of cql and also watching BTS footage and interviews and dipping my toes into fanfiction (wangxian obvs and jin ling/lan sizhui lmaoo) and so... i have THOUGHTS
CQL IS SUPER HOMO i’m kinda impressed! just to back up, i first learned of this show via gifsets and people talking about these two characters being head over heels for each other but i never assumed that they were a canon couple so when i learned that it was a censored adaptation of a BL novel i was like “oh that makes sense” but the degree to which they preserved the romantical VIBE between wwx and lwj is thus far like,, a lot! i would go so far as to say that it’s easier to digest the romance between them in cql because wwx’s inner monologue in the flashbacks of mdzs is just like... “hahahahaha that lan zhan is such a fuddy duddy it’s too fun to tease him hahaha” and the way that he’s portrayed on screen is much more clearly fond and warm
as for which version i prefer, at this point, it’s hard to say... they both have aesthetic aspects that are not really to my taste. i really wish there were an official english translation of mdzs because the translation style of the version i read was sometimes not to my preference, and there are also just some small things about the novel that i find a bit icky. cql, while the acting is for the most part not cringey at all, still kinda rings of cdrama cheesiness at parts, and i just felt bored watching some parts, which is why i skipped through a lot. (however some of that boredom definitely came from having JUST read mdzs and plot points being really fresh on my mind.)
and they both have positive points that i really like. for example i’m really into the temporal fuckiness of mdzs where the reader has to sorta be on their toes to keep track of all the events in the two timelines. it works really well with wwx being the narrator and having a bad memory; also i’m a sucker for reveals lol. so there are some big reveals in mdzs that only exist because of that storytelling structure, which i’m really into. also i’m obviously really into the romance aspect of it, and the final extra chapter of wangxian at lotus pier is just!!!! so!!!!! very good!!!!!!!
also i think some moments in mdzs are more comical than their drama portrayals. like it was still funny in cql, but the moment in mdzs when jin zixuan runs away from yanli on phoenix mountain was like my favorite thing he’s ever done lmao
and of course the novel is muuuuch more graphic and creepy and gory.
cql is more fun and exciting to consume though. i mean, it’s a visual medium and so much more dynamic, and we get to see wwx come to life in SUCH a compelling way. he is much more sympathetic in cql, as are a lot of the characters. i think it’s nice that the past is delivered in one long cohesive linear chunk, and a lot of the characters are beefed up and given more scenes. and,,, as previously mentioned.... the wangxian has very much been delivered, the way they look at each other is..... exquisite... i know i’m going to be robbed of the confession scene at the end but the phoenix mountain scene... and all of the longing filled gazes.... and the amount of flirtatious dialogue that was preserved..... i’m happy like this lol
in conclusion i like both and i won’t choose haha.
ONTO TALKING ABOUT FANFICTION
so far, i have just one question, i’d like to know WHY DO ALL THESE JIANG CHENG SHIPS EXIST WHAT AM I MISSING
i assume in the remaining 15ish eps i have ahead of me he’s going to have a shit ton of interaction with zewu-jun and lan jingyi lmaooo because every other fic i see on ao3 has him shacking up with them when in all of mdzs he seems to have zero romantic inclinations towards anyone and so far in the show he has only had any kind of vibe with wen qing. so... i dunno i look forward to him talking to lan xichen i guess because i love zewu-jun he’s the love of my life
speaking of jiang cheng i’m a huge jiang cheng apologist and also i’m a jin ling apologist and a nie huaisang apologist..... i fucking love nie huaisang i don’t know maybe it’s the fact that i’m weak for things that are weak but i love him
and as for jin ling literally GO OFF [spoilers real quick] wwx really deserved to be stabbed by him and also he really was asking for a lot of other things that happened to him, but mostly jin ling i feel earned the right to stab him and on a similar note i feel for jiang cheng a lot... all of the characters have done some morally questionable things, but i guess the ones i’ll really defend to my grave are jin ling and jiang cheng and nie huaisang, everyone else must be held accountable for their actions but not these 3 lmao
oh, correction. not everyone has done questionable things. lan sizhui is perfect. mianmian is perfect. these two only are beyond reproach i won’t be taking questions at this time
