oh my GOD i am thnking about jack harkness / fenry marlow parallels again..... jack harkness as the longest serving torchwood member, fenry marlow as the first friday. jack only much later becoming the captain of the team and fenry only starting to play for the fridays way later. fenry being a time traveler of sorts. the way nobody's ever able to tell if either of them are lying about the stuff theyve done... owen saying "You know, none of us know whether to take you seriously when you say those things" when jack mentions he dated proust.... jacob winner and juice collins' debate over whether fenry is lying or not, with jacob winner always believing him and juice collins never believing him.... the torchwood team's conversation about jack in day one.... fenry's dog, homer, being a poi dog and jack's habit of using outdated clothes and stuff...... jack having people from the past pop up- how must fenry have felt when the only replicas the fridays ever had were prehistory players? and of course, jack with the doctor and fenry with thomas england... always waiting for someone who may never come back.

You know what? It's time to un-hiatus Angler's Bay.

It seems like I left off right in the middle of a round, typical... So, quick recap:

We are right in the middle of the last Spring round: Parker Nnang and his cousin Casper (Cas) Marlowe. Ava DeLuna has just told Parker that he is the actual father of her twins, and she has graciously allowed Parker some time with the kids. Parker is excited, Cas, not so much.

Oh and Parker is engaged to Selena Grey, who is pregnant with his kid (kids? idk?), and who is very mature about the whole thing. How very refreshing.

No ROS challenge yet, because it's not even Wednesday. Let's hope the long break hasn't made ROS extra vindictive. Fingers crossed!

Rick warned me,  but of course I didn't listen.  That time,  I was in way over my head and I can tell you that being immortal is less attractive when Alana keeps bringing up your mistake and rubs your face in it every time she gets the chance. But what can I say,  she was a beauty.  

I'm talking about Neesha of course.  

I'll never forget her and not just because Lana keeps reminding me, the she-devil. I hope she doesn't get her hands on this diary,  otherwise I'm screwed,  like that time I got involved with Neesha. And I mean literally.

It was in the forties, nineteen forties. I need to remember to mention the centuries.  We were back in London and I had been able to get my life,  or existence, to be exact,  back on track after,  well,  you know,  Belle.  

I had been thinking.  I couldn't go through any of that again, losing a loved one.  I'd had a hard enough time before Belle,  dealing with the fact that you will always outlive your loved ones,  but losing Belle hit hard, as you are well aware,  because I've written diaries full of my laments.  

So,  I had a plan,  a brilliant one.  I had the perfect solution.  I would get myself a female vampire companion,  who would never leave me and I would have eternal happiness.  Neesha was going to be just that. Or so I thought.

In the first half of the 20th century,  we moved around from New Orleans to New York,  and finally back to London. After the war, London was a mess. The city was severely damaged and even though our neighborhood wasn't spared,  The Mayfair,  our mansion,  was.  We moved back for a while to keep an eye on things and make sure that it remained our house. People who lost their homes during the bombings of London were being relocated to abandoned houses and we needed to make sure that our mansion was not going to be taken over by others. 

Fortunately for me,  even though the city was damaged and the people were recovering from the war,  there were always parties to be found.  Especially for us vampires. 

As you can imagine,  I was spending as much time as I could attending as many parties as I could.  I was determined to find that vampire companion and never be sad again.  

Neesha was a gorgeous goddess, who stood out amongst the crowd like a shining star in the dark night sky,  quite literally,  with her shiny jewelry and extravagant silver dress.

I can't even remember how I got there,  to that party,  but I will always remember the sight of her and how I,  half intoxicated,  chatted her up and actually managed to get her undivided attention.  

As said,  Rick had warned me not to get involved with her. He had an eye for 'trouble', but,  you know,  I had my plan and this scrumptious woman was going to fit that perfectly.  

To this day I'm still not sure if she was playing with me,  like a cat with her prey,  or if I had enamored her with my charm.

By the end of the night, having abandoned Rick and Alana, I found myself in Neesha's arms, or in hindsight,  claws,  in what seemed to be a former hotel somewhere in the city.  She had made the hotel her home  and the top room,  with a huge skylight,  was her den.  

I don't know how many times we fucked, but it seemed like we did nothing else for days.  It was like I was under her spell and I couldn't get free and I am man enough to admit that my dick actually hurt! 

You know,  as vampires,  we recover quickly,  also on that front,  but after Neesha,  I was about ready to be celebate for the rest of my immortal life. 

At some point,  I must have seen the light and realize that I wasn't ready to have my existence ended by sex.  Even if death by sex sounds pleasant enough.  So,  I ran and didn't look back and my not so brilliant plan of getting a vampire companion went out the door with me.  I didn't stay celibate of course,  but those are stories for another time. 

Anyway,  I'm not sure why I wrote down this memory.  Maybe it's because Ames was fishing for embarrassing stories from the past and I didn't really want to confess all this to her.  Or maybe it's a way of letting go. Now if only Alana could do the same. 

Time to say goodnight for now and hide you well,  my dear diary.  I'm ready to join my sweet Ames in bed, cuddle up to her and make pleasant memories.

Favourite book: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, but I also love my Invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman. And Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe. And I always forget to mention Andy's a Stitch in Time. The Hobbit by Tolkien is one of my faves too. *Cough* Shakespeare's The Tempest, Merchant of Venice, and Macbeth *cough*. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is fun too.

Last film / show: Star Trek: The Next Generation ("All Good Things" lol).

Inspiration: I derive inspiration from watching TNG. Music usually helps to get me in a writing mood too (idk if this section is about writing-related inspiration, but it is now lol). Reading books also enthuses me to write my own stories.

Story behind url: 'My timing is digital' is a quote from the episode "Outrageous Okona", in which Data is experimenting with humour and jokes etc. I just thought Data replying 'my timing is digital' to Guinan's 'it could have been your timing' was super witty and hilarious (well done, whoever wrote that line), and I somehow always remembered it?

Fun fact about me: I have a poster of Rembrandt's The Night Watch hanging on my bedroom wall, above my television. It is one of my favourite works of art made by a Dutch painter. I've seen it twice at the Rijksmuseum and it's so unbelievably astonishing. :3 My replica can't do it justice, but I like it regardless.

COMPARISONS AND INSPIRATIONS: Alan Wake-esque blurring of reality with all the noir drama of things like The 39 Steps, Marlowe, The Maltese Falcon, etc.

THEMES: The nature of humanity and its place in the universe, humanity vs inhumanity, hope and love in the gaze of the abyss

AESTHETIC: Rain pounding a foggy window, mist and fog obscuring a streetlamp, the clack of shoes in an empty alley, a cigarette being lit in the dark, the buzz of the harsh lights of a diner, thick black smoke swallowing the world around it, the clatter of a metro train overhead, an empty flask, coffee-stained papers haphazardly strewn on a desk

SYNOPSIS:

Three years after the worst day of his life, Adam Lake is doing better. After all, he’s got a paying (if unstable) job as a private investigator for his best friend, Defense Attorney Cole Parker. Hell, he’s even managed to drink away the memory of Elise Conway, the girl that shattered his heart along with his dreams of becoming an archaeologist. Things are calm. Things are… good.

Enter Evelyn Montclaire, ex-actress and model, current movie producer, and dangerously charming client. Something’s off on her new set, and she wants Adam to find a book that’s gone missing from her office. He’s inclined to say no, but it turns out Cole talked to a young assistant on that very production who’s being accused of murder! Can Adam navigate silver screen politics and the wicked world of the fabulously wealthy? If he wants any chance at making rent, he’ll have to.

CHARACTERS:

Adam Lake: The detective. Ex-archaeology student and police department washout (insubordination, of course), Adam was picked up by Cole Parker as a private investigator for his new solo law venture. Hates corruption, hates rich people. Simple as.

Cole Parker: The lawyer. Cole is a defense attorney whose father was imprisoned and executed for a crime he didn’t commit. Shares and respects Adam’s contempt for the corrupt police force of Strand City. Loves jazz music and poetry.

Elise Conway: The scholar. An ex-classmate and ex-lover of Adam, Elise has been called upon by Evelyn Montclaire to help her study and decipher a strange book that has come into her possession. Jumped at the chance. Loves history, language, and men with their shit together.

Judy Love: The starlet. Found dead in her dressing room at Panessa Studios under incredibly mysterious circumstances. Filming for her new movie, Concrete Midnights, has been halted.

Evelyn Montclaire: The producer. A lot of history in the movies, currently trying to revive Strand City’s dying film industry. Cold, calculating, and deadly charming.

Annie Hartwell: The assistant. Accused of jealous murder, Annie is desperately seeking the help of Cole. She seems like a scared newcomer to the city, but is it just an act?

Cliff Calloway: The co-star. An older man doing his last movie as a favor to Evelyn. Used to be a huge name in the movies, has been aging out of the leading roles that won him his fame.

Ethan Bennett: Adam’s old partner on the force. Cares a lot about Adam, but firmly believes he can change the system from the inside. Still, has been known to slip Adam classified info as a favor, though it takes some convincing.

Disclaimer!!!!!

If you’ve read this far, you’re probably wondering about the setting of this book. Concrete Midnights takes place in a fictionalized city in the American Pacific Northwest during the 1930s. I feel like I should take the opportunity to mention this book takes place in an alternative history, and will do its absolute best to steer away from the topics of racism and sexism! Nobody wants to deal with that stuff, least of all me, a white man! That’s gross!

Inspired by Jim's sorting of the books in Good Omens 2, I have developed a new way of organising my own bookshelves. Firstly, do I think/know the authors would have been/ are friends in real life. For example My Tolkiens sit with the Lewises and my Neil Gaimans sit betwixt the Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett. Secondly, how funny would it be if these authors had a good natured bareknuckle boxing match. Example my Shakespeare plays (whilst having Kit Marlow on one side) sit next to my Sylvia Plaith on the other and she in turn sits next to Dorothy Parker.

A new family appears! 

After a rather public row with his ex-girlfriend, Parker just couldn’t live in his old apartment building anymore. He was looking for a new place to crash, and luck would have it that his cousin Cas choose this moment to move to Angler’s Bay. 

Cas happily offered his spare bedroom to his cousin, and they’ve been living together ever since. And because they’re a new playable family, they’ll get two days to settle in before a ROS is rolled.
