Screenwriter Diablo Cody has always had one of the sharpest minds for hip female storytelling and wickedly funny dialogue. Since she broke through with the Oscar-nominated 2006 film Juno, she has shared some of the most quirkily fun and yet often surprisingly dark women’s stories in Hollywood, including her series The United States of Tara, the criminally under-appreciated classic Young Adult, the aging rock goddess film Ricki and the Flash (Jonathan Demme’s final film) and even writing the book of the hit Broadway musical Jagged Little Pill, based on the music of Alanis Morissette.

So, Cody is mostly remembered for her slightly offbeat looks at the real lives of women. Still, even with her feet on the ground, Cody has always had a bit of a soft spot for the horror genre, as well, as you might pick up from her pen name. (Although the writer, whose real name is Brook Busey Maurio, insists the pen name came from merging the song “El Diablo” by old Duran Duran side-project Arcadia, and a town where she once got a speeding ticket called Cody, Wyoming.)

In 2009, hot on the heels of her breakouts with Juno and The United States of Tara, she penned a comic horror film called Jennifer’s Body, with Megan Fox as a demonically possessed killer cheerleader. The film opened to terrible reviews and box office, although over the 15 years since it was released Jennifer’s Body has gotten something of a cult following. She has not really worked on horror again since then unless you count the uncredited script doctoring which she did for the 2013 reboot of The Evil Dead.

That is until now. As you may guess from the title, the film is a very loose variation of the Frankenstein saga. (For the record, in the film the main character is not related to the original family and is not named Lisa Frankenstein but has the rather unfortunate name of Lisa Swallows.) Of course, there are lots of other very obvious influences touched upon as well, including Edward Scissorhands, Heathers, The Breakfast Club and even She’s All That.

Lisa (Kathryn Newton of The Map of Tiny Perfect Things) is a very, very disillusioned goth student in the mid-1980s. Her mental problems stem from her childhood when she witnessed her mother being stabbed to death in a home invasion – one that was never solved. Now her dad (Joe Chrest) has married a hellish evil stepmother (Carla Gugino), and they live with her and her new gorgeous, popular cheerleader stepsister Taffy (Liza Soberano). In one example of how Cody likes to toy with the audience’s expectations, Taffy is not a complete bitch to this new girl who is living in her house. Instead Taffy is very loving, nurturing and protective of Lisa.

Lisa really has no friends other than Taffy – although Taffy keeps trying to include her in activities to help her get to know people. Her hair is an unbrushed rat’s nest, she wears way too much black makeup and formless unflattering clothes. (Although, as is normal in this kind of teen film, all she really needs to do is fix her hair, get a makeup lesson, borrow some of Taffy’s sexier outfits and take off her glasses and suddenly she is absolutely gorgeous.)

The fact that she really doesn’t fit in is not helped by the fact that she often spends time in an abandoned and overgrown graveyard in the woods. She claims she enjoys the quiet, but she also likes being with the memories of the dead. In particular, she is fascinated by an elaborate headstone for a young pianist who died in the 1830s – which includes a full bust of the deceased.

One night, after a particularly uncomfortable party, in which she was dosed with drugs, Lisa goes to the graveyard in dismay. Somehow, due to a misunderstood wish, a torrential storm, and the graveyard’s apparent magical properties, Lisa somehow brings the corpse of a 150-year-dead musician back to life, although the worse for wear after over a century buried, filthy and missing several body parts. (Don’t even try to figure out the how and why of anything supernatural that happens in this film, none of it really will make sense.)

Cole Sprouse (of Riverdale) plays the creature. As with anyone playing the monster (or just a monster), Sprouse has a tricky role. He is only able to express himself through a series of grunts, gestures and glances through most of the film. (Only in the final scene, which may or may not be a dream sequence, he is able to speak.)

The creature is supposed to be a sweet, sensitive sort, but he also has a homicidal streak when he gets angry. He and Lisa start a killing spree to replace some of his lost body parts (again, how this works makes no sense at all, but you either buy in or you don’t).

And while the story made no sense whatsoever, I kind of bought in because the script was consistently funny enough that I overlooked many of Lisa Frankenstein’s flaws. Stylishly directed by Zelda Williams (Robin’s daughter) and well-acted – particularly by Newton and Soberano – it’s far from a great movie, but I have to admit I mostly liked it. It’s certainly different.

-Senamhi anunció que se prevén condiciones térmicas superiores a los valores promedio

-(Senamhi) anunció que hasta el mes de junio se prevén condiciones térmicas sobre lo normal, por lo que el otoño será cálido.

-Las temperaturas superiores a los valores normales se presentarán principalmente en las regiones de la costa norte y centro, así como en la zona alto andina y en la Amazonía

-Según el pronóstico el Ministerio del Ambiente, en los distritos que se encuentran alejados de mar se presentarán, en promedio, temperaturas entre los 18.5°C y 23.3°C. Mientras, en los distritos cercanos al mar la temperatura oscilará entre los 16.9°C y 25°C, en promedio, durante toda la temporada de otoño, que culmina el 21 de junio

-Se esperan niveles de radiación ultravioleta (UV) con valores moderados y extremadamente altos en la costa, sierra y selva.

*Reunión extraordinaria del concejo de ministros*

-Dina Boluarte, ofreció una conferencia de prensa para informar sobre las medidas que se tomará ante la inminente llegada de dos importantes desastres naturales El Niño Global y El Niño Costero débil.

-Boluarte Zegarra informó que este jueves 22 de marzo se reunió con integrantes de INDECI, Reconstrucción con Cambios, y ministros de Estado, para adelantar las acciones a tomar y evitar que, sobre todo en el Norte por donde puede pasar El Niño Costero, miles de familias se vean afectadas.

-Precisó que El Niño Costero estaría llegando a suelo peruano a partir de abril y mayo de este año, mientras que El Niño Global estaría llegando entre diciembre de 2023 y enero de 2024.

-El calentamiento del mar continúa a lo largo de este año, entonces podríamos estar entrando a un escenario “muy probable” de El Niño Global.

-El Gobierno peruano anunció medidas de prevención y contención con un valor estimado de US$ 1.060 millones para enfrentar los efectos del fenómeno climatológico.

-El MEF también anuncio las medidas para atender una emergencia y generar recuperación económica tienen un valor estimado de 4.000 millones de soles "que van ir saliendo en las próximas semanas" hacia las regiones donde se esperan mayores efectos del clima, principalmente en el norte y centro del país andino.

-Convocará a la Asociación de Municipalidades del Perú (AMPE), la Asamblea General de Gobiernos Regionales (ANGR) y la Red de Municipalidades Urbanas y Rurales del Perú (REMURPE) para una reunión con el Consejo de ministros, a fin de coordinar y brindar asesoramiento a las autoridades locales para la toma de decisiones para enfrentar El Niño.

-Se esperan mayores efectos del clima, principalmente en el norte y centro del país andino, por la llegada de El Niño

-Por INDECI está abocado a una tarea de reabastecimiento de sus almacenes a nivel nacional y están adquiriendo bienes de ayuda humanitaria, a la par de capacitar a las autoridades para tener una respuesta mucho más rápida frente a esta contingencia.

-Este calentamiento se extenderá probablemente hasta julio con magnitud débil por el momento

-El ministerio de Defensa, anunció la adquisición de maquinaria, el aumento de personal de las Fuerzas Armadas destinado a intervenciones rápidas y el sobreabastecimiento de bienes de ayuda humanitaria, entre otros.

-El ministro de Economía y Finanzas, Álex Contreras, señaló que las medidas adicionales para atender la emergencia por los desastres naturales, suman cuatro mil millones de soles, recurso que irá saliendo las próximas semanas.

-La ministra de Transportes y Comunicaciones, Paola Lazarte, indicó que se hará una evaluación de los puentes que han resultado afectados por las lluvias.

-Se va incrementar el número de efectivos de las Fuerzas Armadas, de 78 a 200, para apoyar a la población a través de las compañías de intervención rápida de desastres, anunció el ministro de Defensa, Jorge Chávez. También se aumentará el presupuesto para llevar a cabo su implementación y posterior equipamiento y poder actuar como lo han hecho en cada uno de los eventos en que han estado prestas las Fuerzas Armadas.

-El Centro Nacional de Estimación, Prevención y Reducción del Riesgo de Desastres (Cenepred) ha elaborado los escenarios de riesgo con la información del Servicio Nacional de Meteorología e Hidrología (Senamhi) y entidades científicas respectivas.

*Respecto a los planes de gestión de riesgo*

-Contraloría informo 1528 alertas emitidas a los gobiernos regionales y locales del país entre los años 2021 y 2022, por la falta de aprobación del Plan de Prevención y Reducción de Desastres, el 84% (1328) no han sido atendidas hasta el momento por 1496 municipalidades provinciales y distritales del país.

-Existen otros incumplimientos por parte de un gobierno regional y otras entidades

-La existencia la Ley N° 29664 Ley que crea el Sistema Nacional de Gestión del Riesgo de Desastres (Sinagerd) por la cual los gobiernos regionales y locales deben fiscalizar y ejecutar los procesos que permitan identificar y reducir riesgos asociados a peligros o minimizar sus efectos ante situaciones de desastres.

-Entre los años 2021 y 2022, el presupuesto destinado a la Reducción de Vulnerabilidad y Atención de Emergencias por Desastres, asignados a los gobiernos locales y regionales, ascendió a S/ 2 588 millones (PIM), de los cuales se ha ejecutado el 69.8%, de acuerdo a información del portal Consulta Amigable del Ministerio de Economía y Finanzas (MEF).

*La temperatura del mar*

-La temperatura superficial del mar, podría superar los 27 grados (centígrados) en marzo y en abril, y en abril y junio se esperan lluvias superiores de lo normal

-Según la Comisión Multisectorial Encargada del Estudio Nacional del Fenómeno El Niño (Enfen), las condiciones cálidas en el mar de deben mantenerse por tres meses consecutivos; es decir, desde marzo a mayo.

-Según Patricio Valderrama, exjefe del Senamhi, recalcó que “todo el mes de marzo el mar del norte y centro del Perú (está) mucho más caliente de lo normal”.

-En entrevista previa con el Diario El Comercio, Gino Passalacqua, doctor en oceanografía, aclaró que “va a seguir lloviendo. Probablemente, baje por unos días, pero las lluvias sobre lo normal van a seguir por varias semanas, por lo menos hasta principios de abril”.

-Por otro lado, Patricio Valderrama recomendó a la población que se vio afectada por lluvias, inundaciones y filtraciones de agua en esta temporada de lluvias o en el año 2017 prepararse para una probable "temporada de precipitaciones extremas" para el próximo año. "Nada más tenemos seis o siete meses en adelante para que [autoridades y población] se enfoquen en estos puntos", aseguró.
