The fandom likes to talk about how Ron was willing to let himself get hit by the Cruciatus curse in order to prevent Hermione from getting tortured. What happens afterwards, though, is that Romione shippers argue about how Harry hadn't done anything like that. After all, he was just asking Ron to shut up.

This, they claim, is evidence that Ron cares more about Hermione than Harry does. Or that Harry doesn't care about her at all.

I do think what Ron did here is very admirable, and there's absolutely nothing to critique about that. What I hate is how it turns into Harry bashing to justify shipping Romione.

First, it's important to keep in mind that Harry's comparatively more level-headed than Ron is. He's not as emotional & he rarely displays them openly (and when he does, it's in Hermione's presence, but that's something for another post).

As Harry wanted to figure out a way from the problem, he was getting disturbed by Ron screaming, which was affected his. concentration. Unlike Ron, who was reacting emotionally, Harry wanted to think about whether they would be able to escape the place. That's why he was asking him to shut up.

And that's a good thing. When you are in trouble and someone you like is getting tortured, you attempt to try and escape instead of getting carried away by your emotions.

To try and spin Harry trying to save Hermione into "he doesn't care about her" is a flat-out lie.

Honestly, if I were Harry, I'd be pretty pissed as well. Just look at it:

"HERMIONE!” Ron bellowed, and he started to writhe and struggle against the ropes tying them together, so that Harry stag- gered. “HERMIONE!” “Be quiet!” Harry said. “Shut up. Ron, we need to work out a way—“ “HERMIONE! HERMIONE!” “We need a plan, stop yelling—we need to get these ropes off—"

Harry wants to get the bindings off and work out a way. He wants to save Hermione, instead of just screaming to the void.

If even more evidence were needed:

Hermione was screaming again: The sound went through Harry like physical pain. Barely conscious of the fierce prickling of his scar, he too started to run around the cellar, feeling the walls for he hardly knew what, knowing in his heart that it was useless.

Her screaming "went through Harry like physical pain". And, also notice how he was "barely conscious of the prickling on his scar".

He's only done that once before, and that was when he was thinking about Sirius.

His love for Hermione is so powerful that he was able to block Voldemort out of his mind.

ron is a moral compass.

u cannot convince me that ron weasley isn’t a mother hen. because while hermione is a child prodigy, she’s breaking laws and committing war crimes half the time when it benefits her. and harry ‘i’m the Chosen One’ potter attracts danger like a flame would a moth.

so while they’re a duo of danger, there’s ron.

who grew up with siblings and spent a lot of his childhood making sure ginny didn’t get hurt playing in the mud.

who’s as nervous as Molly when Charlie works with the Dragons, and panics when Bill gets attacked by the werewolf.

who steals specific concoctions from the twins when they try to prank Percy because it could possibly harm him.

who wraps harry’s wounds when he gets hurt and is too tired to see madam pomphrey. who helps hermione understand why killing Rita in the jar wouldn’t help in the long run.

Ron Weasley, the worrier and moral compass of the Golden Trio. he doesn’t believe how many times he saved the wizardry world by simply being himself. and everyone at hogwarts but him can see it.

─ you don't know what have gotten to this man , you guys are doing alright then suddenly he asked you ;

"maybe we should end things." you were staggering of what you heard , absolutely dumbfounded of what this man just have said. You don't know what to say , "pardon ─ potter ?" he knew this was bad but for his own reasons this needed to happen , base on your reaction he knew this wouldn't go good. "im sorry i─ i just" he don't know what to say either because of your reaction , you were near crying for god sakes and he doesn't want to see you cry. "don't cry oh ─ (y/n) please ─" he was trying to held you but you pushed him away , don't cry ? what reaction does he want me to have ? Be happy ? you thought. "god potter what has gone to your head !" You pushed him hard quickly running away after leaving harry in his place standing frozen.

"that's ridiculous !" your friend caroline said , you were crying hell at the dormitory since earlier ─ you didn't even attended the few class because you're gonna see him there and for god sakes you don't wanna see him yet. "look he isn't gonna do that without a reason right ?" your other friend lucy sighed tapping your back to cheer you up at least. "look (y/n) i heard a rumor that ─" " shush !" millicent stopped before caroline could finish her words. " No , what is it ?" you asked looking at them , they looked concerned at you well the 'rumors' are indeed concerning especially it could be connected to your recent problem. "forget about it (y/n) it's just a rumo─" "harry kissed cho , the ravenclaw girl" everyone in the circle was shocked , pancy stated what needs to be know by you. "pansy !" millicent hissed "she has the rights to know that , she was his girlfriend c'mon Millicent no one likes to not know that their boyfriend is cheating on them !" pansy replied. This is enough you were staggering of what is happening today. You stood up from the circle and walked away even tho your friends keep calling you out.

You wished this day never happened. You flopped into the bed not feeling anything like you didn't just cried for four hours straight.

─ Not so long , you forgot about him already not completely but you focused better than before. Even tho you saw him somewhere near you , you don't pretty much bother now. You aren't around so much with gryffindors now too which leads Hermione and Ron in confusion what's with you and harry. Few weeks ago you were just with harry walking in the hallway now ? You were nowhere to be found so close to him. "So , harry.." hermione and ron thought this was the great chance to ask about you guys. Harry looked both at his best friend waiting for them to say what they are about to say , "you and .. (y/n) ?" ron asked making harry blink and gulp not knowing what to answer to ron's question. "uhm─ i.." he doesn't know where to start , "still together ?" hermione went straight forward to his question. "i- i don't know" harry replied absolutely feeling dumbfounded. It only means one thing for both hermione and ron , everything is over.

"for atleast what reason harry ?" hermione sighed pushing the fork into the fruit in her plate , ron looking at harry while chewing his food. "i don't want her to get hurt.." that's all he could say , "for what ? Kissing uh y'know" ron smiled awkwardly trying to give idea to harry's reply. Hermione quickly getting it "you did not , that was real ?!" she hissed raising from her seat making almost everyone's eyes turn to her "bloody hell hermione calm down" ron whispered trying to pull hermione back down into her chair. Hermione sighed and sat back down , "it's not just that" harry added as his eyes turn it's way to you ; you were laughing with your friends at the table , you were near blaise who was rumoured to have a crush on you. You were gorgeous than ever , your sweet smile ; voice and eyes.

"i.. want to keep her safe to whatever happens , danger is always near me like in the past few years and i don't want her to be harmed , and this could be the time she could find someone else better than me." he explained with a little shaky voice as if he was about to cry just speaking about it , your are so important to him like he was the last missing piece of his life that he could ever asked for. But you need to understand that you need to be in the right place , where there's no harm and no danger surrounding you. This is the only way he could protect you among from the dangers about to come in his life.

"but what does this gotta do with you kissing ─" "ron. Seriously ?" hermione threatend ron with the fork making ron move back , harry was having his moment. "look harry , if you really think that you should have confronted her !" hermione spoke "i tried but , i can't say it and she ran away- it didn't go as plan" harry explained looking back at them now "because you can't do it , you're pushing yourself into something you don't agree either. You are hurting the both of you" hermione stated with her arms crossed trying to push harry realize things. "go apologize to her , especially you kissing cho." hermione sighed , ron trying to his best not to laugh at the whole harry kissing cho thing. "I don't know what got to me to do that" harry stated "love potion for sure." "Ron i swear to the damn wizards-"

now harry was just planning how would he approach you , it's late night and he could not stop thinking how would he start a conversation with you after the last encounter of you an him had. He couldn't even lock an eye contact with you in the hallway when you look back in his eyes. "How would i apologize like hermione said ?" he spoke to himself like a damn idiot. He was practicing as if he's about to have an important speech tomorrow ; "hi (y/n) good day uh can we talk ? I want to say sorry" he spoke infront of the mirror. He looks stupid , harry himself thought of that too. He sounds like a random dude who was payed to say sorry , he's trying his best to make everything okay even if.. you don't forgive him , or even "-if she doesn't wanna be with me anymore." he said to himself feeling his chest tighten , he was just imagining it. He can't imagine you fully disappearing to his life , you only being a memory. God all he can feel is pain. Maybe if he wasn't stupid enough to kiss cho , to feel worthless to you this wouldn't happen and he wouldn't have hurt you this bad. Tears where flooding now , should he even confront you tomorrow ?

─ harry quietly stood in the hallway with ron , they were waiting for hermione who isn't here yet. "why is hermione taking so long to come ?" harry asked scratching his head , "i- i don't know either , she's definitely finding something in the library again or probably- beated malfoy's ass" ron laughed making harry laugh as well. Harry sighed and lean his head on the wall closing his eyes , taking deep breathes. "Bloody hell , is that (y/n) ?!" Ron quickly reacted in disbelief making harry's eyes wide open , you were with hermione walking. You look like you were disagreeing to come but , everyone is scared hermione granger so what could you do ? Harry was staggering not knowing what to do , and there's ron who was already day dreaming what could happen. "Goodluck harry." That's all he could say , he knew he would have a friend who needed to be comforted later. "Hi boys !" Hermione greeted , "hi ron" you smiled awkwardly. "I guess there is an important thing to be talked about here , c'mon ron" hermione quickly took ron's arms and drag him out of the circle.

"sorry about─ hermione." he was speechless but decided to speak at least few words just so things wouldn't be awkward. "it's fine , it happens.." you smiled "well uh hermione said you wanted to confront me so i─ uh im here now maybe this is a great time." you spoke confidently but deep inside ; you were so happy to see him and if there's only a chance you wished you could hug him right now. "can we go somewhere more private ?" he asked with a deep breath , you nodded as a reply.

"so uh.. tell me" you spoke looking at him eye to eye , his brown eyes god- they are your weakness but you are hiding them because you believe that you are over him already and this is the closure you wanted right ? so then this is it. Take it. "i.." all the words he practiced last night was suddenly gone , he couldn't even spoke a letter to start to. "Harry , if you are forced to do this─" "im sorry for that day (y/n) that wasn't my intention , i just want to properly explain it to you that , i wasn't doing that because i just wanted to but.." he paused for a moment looking deeply t your eyes. "bu- but ?" you whispered gulping. "I've said that because.. i.. i just wanted you to be safe from all the danger i was carrying with me and i want you somewhere safer , i don't want you to be harmed (y/n) you are everything i could asked for and i don't wanna ever lost you ." he spoke , he said what he needed to be said from his heart and head. "and you truly deserve someone better." he added. "harry james potter. You are all i need , if there's a danger im going with you , maybe i am safe but what about you ? If there's is a safe space i could be , it was in your presence potter. And if i deserve someone better it's you." you replied as tears started to appear in your eyes , slowly streaking down into your cold cheeks. "but , cara mia potter.. if i was indeed important to you why.. why would you kiss cho?" harry doing that is unforgivable. "Harry i understand you but i don't think i could forgive you , but i guess this is the closure we both need. It was a great time being with you." You loved him and this was against your will but he needed to realize what he did absolutely destroyed you. "I understand (y/n) , thank you for taking your time with me , please take.. take care of yourself" harry spoke trying not to cry as well. His hands interact with yours , "if i could apologise in thousand ways i would do it , im sorry (y/n)" he couldn't take it anymore , you guys are sharing pain right now. He cried holding your hands and as much as you want to take your hands away you can't. For the last time you wanted to feel this. He slowly pulled you into his arms , and you quickly dropped your things and hugged him so tightly. Harry did the same thing.

If he could love you again , he would have loved you right.

Touchy Ronald Weasely

Ron, who grew up the ‘cuddle bug’ of the family, was an incredibly tactile fellow. He was always touching someone, someway, somehow. Whether it was by a hand on their back, an elbow on their shoulder, a hand ruffling their hair.

Harry wasn't used to it, at first. It wasn't a surprise, considering how he was raised by the Dursleys. So, it takes him by surprise just how tactile his new friend is.

When Harry’s unpacking his trunk, Ron sweeps by and claps his hands on the boy’s shoulders before squeezing them. Ron hooks an arm around his shoulders with an easygoing smile as they walk to their next destination. He messes with Harry’s hair even more so when the boy first wakes up and Ron is passing his head.

Ron fixes his glasses from across the damn table during supper.

But, to Harry’s surprise, he isn't put off by it. He doesn't jump like how he used to when Uncle Vernon or Dudley suddenly slammed their hammers of a hand down on him. He doesn't flinch or pull away.

It's probably because Ron has ‘comfort’ hands. Hands that carry a reassuring weight, warm and friendly.

And Harry isn't the only one who notices this.

Once, when Hermione and Ron were going to visit Harry, who’d landed himself in Madam Pomphrey’s care after a Quidditch game, she’d nearly walked right off a moving staircase.

But, Ron had snagged her back before it was too late. He wasn’t even harsh with it, quickly grabbing Hermione by the sleeve of her robe and tugging her back. He then fixed her uniform, deftly smoothing it back in place with an eye roll.

Ron only scolded her, commenting something about, “The brightest of the century witch being killed by a staircase,” although Hermione doesn't remember. Her heart was beating too quickly in her chest, cheeks burning.

She's pretty sure that's where it all began.

And when they're dating, and Hermione shows him her O.W.L’s (which she passed with flying colors), Ron is reaching down to cup her face. Hermione stands there with a bashful smile, giggling as he peppers her face in kisses and praises.

Ron is always touching her when they date. He leans on her shoulder, plays with her hair while she studies, and fiddles with the fingers of her free hand as she uses the other to flip through the book she reads.

Hermione isn't used to having a friend (much less boyfriend) be so touchy-feely, but with Ron, it just feels right. So, Hermione welcomes the change eagerly.

Bonus:

And then, both Hermione and Harry find out that Ron is a little spoon.

It's their eighth year, months after the war between Hogwarts and Voldemort. None of them can stand to be apart from each other— especially Ron, who’d been grieving the lost of his brother.

So, one night, on a night when he knows this is something all of them need, Ron drags the two to the Gryffindor Common Room. And then, he's piling them together under quilts handmade by Molly, tucked near a dimly lit candle.

If Ron sticks himself between them, neither Harry nor Hermione comments on it. They simply wrap their arms around their friend, eyes slowly closing as they tangle up under the blankets.

It's how the First Years find them hours later, the trio a sleeping mess of limbs, a blanket strewn to the side, Harry’s nose buried in Ron’s shoulderblade, a leg tossed over him, while Hermione’s face is pressed into Ron’s chest, a knee resting against Harry’s thigh.
