Pirate Week: Jack of All Trades Floundering Father and Shark Bait Reviews: Bizzaro Blackbeard (Comissoned by Weirdkev27)
Tumblr media
Ahoy me hearties and welcome back to Pirate.. two consecutive days. Today we look at one of the most infamous scourges to ever sail the seven seas, Blackbeard!
Tumblr media
No not that one.
Tumblr media
Sadly not him either. I gotta get back to that series sometime. Maybe next month. No instead of talking about the good blackbeards we're talking about the version from Jack of All Trades.
Tumblr media
Before we can get into this disapointment, let's talk about the show itself.
Jack of All Trades was syndicated show in 2000, lasting for two seasons (one 16 episodes the other 8) and part of the back2back action hour with Cleopatra 2525, about an exotic dancer who gets put in cryo sleep and winds up leading a revolution against robots.
Like Cleopatra 2525, Jack of All Trades likely would've been lost ot the sands of time were it not for one man, it's star, your surrogate uncle and mine, the man the myth the chin BRUCE MOTHERFUCKING CAMPBELL. Kev seems determined to one day have me review everything bruce has been in.. which will probably include mchale's navy by the end
Tumblr media
For now though this is the good stuff, as jack was also executive produced by Bruce's ride or die best buddies Robert Tapert and Sam Rami.
Jack follows Jack Styles, america revolutionary war hero and either ash williams great great great great great grandpa.. or possibly a time lost Ash Williams who became his own grandpa Phillip J Fry style. The world will never know.. until Dynamite FINALLY does a crossover for it. Come on guys. It's fish in a barrel. Kev even pitched the crossover to me: Ash goes back in time and has to team up with Jack to stop Napoleon from getting his hands on the necronomicon.
Anyways back to the premise: Jack is tapped by president jefferson to go to the french ruled island of Pualu-Pualu in the east indies and stop the various plots of the french. His contact, partner and object of romantic tension is british scientest Emilia Rothschild, played by Angela Dotchin. Jack masquerades as Emilia's houseboy, then goes into actoin as the Darring Dragoon. Yes folks this is also basically a superhero show. The two frequently foil the local Govenor Croque, ocasionally napoleon himself.. and hilariously enough often also scheme to keep Croque in power as his incompetence makes their jobs easier than if Napoleon sent people with actual talent. It's both a great setup and a purposfully thin one: within this the duo can do just about any nonsense the writers want. This includes, just from wikipedia episode blurbs: Jack having to beat Napoleon in poker to keep the louisana purchase, help croque fuck his wife better, get cathrine the great her horse back so she dosen't blow up the island, and get amnesia via a pig. The show is really just an excuse for slapstick nonsense, wordplay, our two leads to banter, and for every man on the island to hit on amelia to remind you this show was made in 2000 and everybody was super extra triple horned up those days. So how did my first round of getting to know jack pan out? Why does this blackbeard suck so much? How does leonardo divinci factor into all of this? Join me under the cut to find out.
Tumblr media
The Floundering Father: This episode SHOULD have been an easy slam dunk. I mean look at the image I chose. Really look at it. It has Bruce Campbell in an old timey sleeping outfit. Bruce Campbell, already in his pajamas. That visual gag alone should've won this 29 emmys.
But.. the rest of the episode simply dosen't live up to that glorious image you see. It's main problem is it's running gag for the episode: Jack and Emilia bicker about which is better, America or England. Which is laughable today as while I love my country, we've got a dumptruck load of problems.. and so does the uk. It dosen't work character wise because while I get this show is over the top and what not, I do... it dosen't paint the best picture of emilia that she's overdefnding a country that till very recently opressed Jack's country. I get it's her homeland and the man later says he wishes he could put her boobs on a teddy bear
Tumblr media
But it's still pretty tone deaf to tell your partner "Golly the people who opressed yours you had to fight to get away from sure are great". I'd be able to overlook it.. if it was funny. Instead it's just every two minutes or so "AMERICA GREAT" "NO BRITAN" "AMERICA" "BRITANNNN" "AMERICAAAAAAA FUCK YEAH " "BRITAN FUCK YEAH " "mericamericaMERICACAAAAA" "BRITANBRITANJOLLYGOODPIPIPBRITAN"
Tumblr media
It drags down the episode every. fucking time. And this being the first jack of all trades I saw had me worried their like this EVERY TIME. Thankfully the next ep, which we'll get to shortly, settled more into the two just bantering and nicely complimenting each other as a team: emilia is the brains and creates vehicles and inventions and such to help them, while jack is the more wordly brawn, able to use his fists and spycraft while loudly complaning and making puns and what not. They have way more chemistry there then here where it just gives me a migraine.
That said it's not ALL their fault the episodes a bit of a slog. Mostly but still Blackbeard dosen't help. Blackbeard is played by Hori Aphene here and credit to the show for casting a POC actor. I didn't even know historical blackbeard wasn't white till our flag means death. The character himself is just .. mostly shouting and being gross.
Tumblr media
God bless HOri he's trying really hard, it's the writing that lets him down. I will give this version points for breathing fire
Tumblr media
but all the shouting in the world can't make this character funny, threatning or remotely intresting and it only gets worse next episode.
The combo of the lackluster guest star and bickering just makes this one a chore to get through but there are SOME bright spots of light. Croque and his minon, Brogard, pull a clever plan, having Brogard take Benjamin's franklin's place as hostage.
The main saving grace of this episode though is Benjy himself: for starters he's kindapped for the most gloriously stupid reason imaginable: Napoleon wants to force him to build a super weapon to destroy the white house. That itself would be good.. but what takes it over the top and really told me what this show true form is.... the weapon is a GIANT KITE. Yes they took the one thing any person knows about ben franklin and made it into a doomsday device. I fucking love everything about this. This alone got my interest back.
Ben Himself is just a lot of fun. While some of the jokes are just him eating a lot aka
Tumblr media
Outside of that he's great, and his little mentorship with elizabeth, both being in awe of her designs and helping her figure out why her sub's engine's not working is genius. Elizabeth's submarine itself looks great. The climax.. is also a lot of fun. The Dragoon battles blackbeard while as Jack he eventually has to hold two wires together and gets after effects lightninged all over. It's wonderfully dumb.
All in all this episode is just..
Tumblr media
Has some highlights towards the end but most of the first two acts are a slog. Thankfully the next one's MOSTLY better.
Tumblr media
Shark Bait
This one is better... though just to get it out of the way blackbeard is far worse. While he wasn't great in the first, the pirate ship was at least fun for a climax and he had the delightfully insane quirk of breathing fire. Here it just takes all his traits that made him hard to watch the constant shouting, the poor hygine jokes him creeping on elizabeth.. and..
Tumblr media
I have to adress this in a bit more detail. The show is REALLY creepy with elizabeth at times, both with the fanservicy outfits (which are less to show off her sexuality and indepnednce and more LOOK EVERYONE BOOBS), the whole teddy bear joke but especially blackbeard who JUST WON'T STOP hitting on her and the show treats it like a wacky joke. I get this is the 2000s, it's why it dosen't destroy the episode for me but it's still just gross and I suspect something i'll have to deal with all series long. We even get a morning wood joke with jack which comes off as HAHA GET IT HE ASSAULTED HER. Her sexual indginities are treated as one big joke and it's VERY hard to stomach. Thankfully the show has a rapid fire pace to iron it out but I just.. woudln't feel right never adressing this.
But combinging with that with just "ISN'T THIS GUY GROSS JOKES" makes blackbeard fucking intolerable. Someone having pooor hygine.. just isn't funny. It wasn't funny when I was 10 and it's not funny now. Now you can MAKE someone's horrible hygine funny. Observe
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here the jokes are.. jokes. He's dirty, but they find ways to play with the joke. Someone being gross isn't funny unless you find a way to give it character. Blackbeard just shouts and smells bad. That's it. That's what they did with the character.
While BLackbeard dosen't help the episode the episode itself.. is a LOT of fun thankfully. Jack and elizabeth's banter is thankfully way more varied here, with jack being annoyed at her modes of transportation. A standout is jack preparing to fist fight the crew of the sub they've ended up on.. before Amelia points their outnumbered and they both hide. This seems more like what the series is actually like: two very diffrent people bickering and bantering and complementing each other. Jack even points out the obvious issue of using blackbeard to help them get around the ship: that he could recognize them from last time and it adds some nice tension. And ironically , if naturally it's jack who accidently blows it by mentoining her sub.
The plot itself is delightfully nuts: it starts out simple enougH: a mysterious sea monster is sinking ships going into palu-palu, and Elizzabeth ropes jack into helping it. We also get some classic bruce campbell wordplay as jack isn't pro pro bono. I swear no one else could pull that line off.
So our heroes use the sub, a nice call back, and it ends up swallowed by the monster.. which turns out to be a giant hammerhead shark shaped sub itself. That would be bonkers enough... but then we get to whose behind it: Nardo DaVinci, descendant of Leonardo Divinci. Nardo is a hell of a lot of fun, mostly berating his minons for being absolute morons, assuming a ping on the radar is just a fish, not bothering to search the sub for people and in my faviorite moment of the episode when the heroes later baricade themselves, trying to break down the door WITH A TORPEDO.
Said torpedo is the crux of Nardo's naturally over the top and hilariously stupid plan: he's invented the first, a nice little use of real world stuff before it's time. That'd be neat and all but the bonkers spice is his target: the annual founding father's father son boat cruise, where the founding families all take a trip out to sea. Just the.. concept alone is funny. Nardo helps his case by also being compitent: he repeadtely plans to have his men just shoot our heroes and ONLY gets sidetracked when Jack baits his ego.. and even then he plans to have them all shot to death right after and only looses them because Blackbeard can breathe fire. And let's face it "this pirate we're facing can breathe fire" isn't exactly something you can plan for. If your curious Nardo's crew shanghied blackbeard (and the previous ships) for his loot and have been making him swab the deck. It's also why the heroes use him at all as he ALLGEDLY knows his way around.
Our heroes escape is even more bonkers: our heroes have to SHOOT THEMSELVES OUT OF A TORPEDO TUBE. And jack has to make the lever swing since no one can pull it for him. And all of this is complete with hilariously cheap greenscreen.
Tumblr media
Our finale is a fuckton of fun. Our heroes can't persue them in the sub since, unlike last time, it gives them no element of suprise and a boat is worse than useless. So how do they stop this dastardly da vinci?
Tumblr media
So eliza has a hot air balloon they plan to use to huck stuff at the sub. They do end up dislodging the torpedo but have to hang loose from blackbeards farts. I.. I wish that wasn't a plot point. He figures out who they are.. but in TRYING TO MANUALLY PICK UP A TORPEDO HE FALLS DOWN AND APPARENTLY DIES DESTROYING THE SUB.. which somehow survivies fine as blackbeard is back aboard. Either way it's an awesome climax.
Overall Shark Bait is a solid episode with a fun guest star. It's brougth down because their version of blackbeard just plain sucks, but since future episodes i'll be covering don't have him, i'm happy to cover the series again. It's got a lot of fun qualiteis and let's face it i'll watch anything with bruce campbell in it, paid or not. Thanks for reading

Royal blood new album 2021
Tumblr media
One of the bravest – and best – albums of 2021 is right here. It’ll sell millions anyway, so that kind of doesn’t matter, but it is an album that if you stick with just a little, will reward you immensely. “Typhoons” is not quite a wind of change, but it really is an exploration. You’re supposed to say things like “and that might herald a new direction for the band” and that type of thing at the end of these reviews, but the truth is that even Royal Blood themselves probably don’t know themselves. “All We Have Is Now” is a piano ballad, totally incongruous to the rest of “Typhoons” but yet its sense of adventure is totally in keeping. And oddly, its only when writing that that I’ve come to realise that the whole record had a flavour of Prince about it, the same desire to push the envelope and go where you wanted.Īnd that’s even more the case on the last one. “Mad Visions” (first line: “I wanna change, but I don’t know how”) makes the confusion palpable with its sound, while “Hold On” has one more go around, and Kerr finds some falsetto to his voice that is reminiscent of Prince. “Boilermaker” on the other hand – the first song they recorded with Homme – has never been unsure of anything. On one hand, it’s a shining thing, but it exists in darkness. “Either You Want It” is another example of the duality that exists on this. “Million And One” couldn’t sound much more 70s if Pans People were dancing to it on Top Of The Pops, but it feels like the cool kids are having the party, while Royal Blood are having the bad trip outside – and that’s the genius of this. The band have dubbed their new sound as AC Disco, and you can see why. “I’ve got leaches on my right and evil in my head” is a mighty line, and it goes with the mighty riff. “Who Needs Friends” deals with the confusion of fame. “You have to do the work” and this is that. Whether he’s talking about illegal or prescription drugs, I don’t know, but I do know that this album is the reflection, the therapy, as it were. “All these chemicals, running through my veins, they don’t kill the cause, they just numb the pain” is a hell of a hook, but it’s the one here. The title track is essentially a masterclass in modern rock n roll. “Oblivion” is the RB sound (which lets be honest is unlike anyone else anyway) but its repackaged and shiny as hell. Look, if you loved the other two records then you’ll love this one too. “In my reflection,” he muses on “….Coming”, “I see signs of psychosis” and the sense of confusion is reflected gloriously in the chorus “trouble’s coming, but I don’t know when”. Really personal, as Kerr explains he got sober, and he faced his demons – all the while, at the same time he was making what is a de facto dance record at Josh Homme’s studio. This is the sound of hedonism.īut the really striking thing is that the lyrics are raw and personal. The same two blokes – Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher, but they aren’t the same. and Canada in support of their latest album, Typhoons. The band, featuring a wall of sound created by bassist Mike Kerr, will be touring the U.S. UK rock duo Royal Blood will be coming back to North America for the first time since 2019. The opener to their third album, “Trouble’s Coming” is pretty much the window to this world. by Kevin Johnson Saturday, December 18th, 2021. He said Guns N Roses got off tour and it was like “what now”.Īnd “Typhoons” very much – to me anyway – is that. I remember reading the Slash autobiography a few years ago. If that’s the case – and being there with my brother that night it felt like you were really part of something – then “Typhoons” is very much the other side, “what happens next” if you will. Royal Blood – who a few years earlier had been opening for Turbowolf at a tiny venue a couple of miles away – were headlining the Birmingham NIA (or whatever it was called then) in front of 16,000. Their tour dates can be accessed here.November 17 th 2017 was proof that despite all the talk, rock n roll isn’t dead. Royal Bloods are on tour starting September 13 at Engine Shed in Lincoln, UK until Jin Madrid, Spain at Mad Cool Festival. Royal Blood’s Typhoons can be preordered directly from the band. The song can be streamed on all streaming sites. The band holds your attention via the event though as you’re brought to the end of everything, you can hold your values without actually getting involved. However as one does his own thing, these general jerks show up before one leaves. Screaming, crying and general inclusion in the event seem to be essential. Donning shirts from the experience, the people involved are as wondrous as the event itself. His words and deliberations definitely pay off against the song. While he’s a speaker at his event, he’s entertaining and involved. With Hanks taking center stage, his persona takes center stage here. The song gets going from the jump and gets going.

12 Christmas Films of a Century Past
Tumblr media
For some reason, I thought it would be a good idea to watch somewhere around 50 Christmas and Christmas-adjacent silent films from before 1920 to put together a playlist for you all. So, I hope you enjoy!
I chose these twelve as a representative selection. My general criteria were:
Christmas should be central to the story
The plot should be novel to a modern viewer or something a modern viewer would be surprised to see so early on film
The list on the whole should have a variety of settings and narrative structures
Here’s a direct link to the YouTube playlist if you want to watch them all in one go. (They are all shorter than feature length!)
Two quick presentation notes: 1. Some of the videos have music and some don’t, so you may want to check your volume level. 2. The intertitles for some of these films are not in English, so be sure you have captions turned on for English translations.
See the whole list BELOW THE JUMP!
1. Santa Claus (1898) (UK)
Directed by George Albert Smith
Short and sweet, this film sees children put to bed by their nanny on Christmas Eve and Santa Claus coming down the chimbley to fill their dutifully hung stockings. Director G.A. Smith used his own patented technique of double exposure to show Santa’s arrival without cutting away from the children’s room. Santa Claus might not pack the punch of a Méliès trick film, but it’s a fun novelty and is purportedly the first appearance of Santa Claus on film.
2. The Little Match Seller (1902) (UK)
Directed by James Williamson
This one’s quick but effective adaptation of the Hans Christian Anderson tragedy featuring impressively well-coordinated superimpositions.
3. The Christmas Angel (1904) (FR)
Directed by George Méliès for Star Film Company
The Christmas Angel follows an impoverished girl driven into the city to beg on a snowy winter night. First she’s chased away from a church by more seasoned beggars; then she’s thrown out of a poultry seller and harassed by police. On the verge of falling asleep in the snow, a rag-and-bone man rouses her and offers her help. Later, the girl passes out beside a road but is luckily spotted by a wealthy couple on a car ride. When they learn of her plight, they bring her home along with food and gifts.
Though not as fantastical as some of Méliès’ more famous works, The Christmas Angel is still highly stylized (and stylish) and features special effects that photograph beautifully. It’s also worth noting that the version of the film included here is the American cut. The original French cut, titled Détresse et Charité (Distress and Charity), did not include the sequence with the wealthy couple and instead ends with the girl dying in the snow.
4. The Night Before Christmas (1905) (US)
Directed by Edwin S. Porter for Edison Manufacturing Company
This is the first time the poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” was put on film. Loosely following the poem, we see Santa Claus prepare for his yearly trek while a middle-class family prepares for his visit. When Santa heads out, we are treated to an extended panning sequence with a fully painted backdrop for a mini Santa and his reindeer to glide across. When Santa arrives at the family home, he chaotically dumps presents and decorations around their living room and makes a large, decorated tree appear out of thin air. (Across many of the movies I watched to put this post together, this seems to be a favored scenario for the jolly fat man around this time–and it’s delightful.) The family then wakes to find their gifts and the film closes with Santa directly wishing us a Merry Christmas.
5. A Little Girl Who Did Not Believe in Santa Claus (1907) (US)
Directed by J. Searle Dawley and Edwin S. Porter for Edison Manufacturing Company
Even at the risk of this list being too Edison heavy, I couldn’t leave this great short out. While walking with his mother, a rich little boy encounters a poor little girl alone in the cold. They take her home to play and warm up. When the boy learns that the girl doesn’t believe in Santa because apparently Santa doesn’t visit poor children, he hatches a scheme. On Christmas Eve, the boy has a stake out near the fireplace and takes Santa hostage, tying him up and holding him at gunpoint. The boy then forces Santa to visit the girl–going so far as shimmying down the chimney himself to let Santa in the front door. When the girl wakes up to a beautifully decorated tree, new toys, and a full stocking, she can finally believe in Santa Claus. While I’m generally not so into stories about supposedly benevolent rich people, I do love the implications this story has on how Santa Claus works and I also find the means with which the boy gets his way hilarious.
6. Il Natale di Cretinetti / Foolshead’s Christmas (1909) (IT)
and Come fu che l’ingordigia rovino il Natale di Cretinetti / How Greediness Spoilt Foolshead’s Christmas (1910)
and Il Natale di Cretinetti (1911)
Directed by Andre Deed for Itala Film
This entry is a three-for, which I hope you’ll excuse, but I couldn’t decide which Cretinetti Christmas to share! Cretinetti, the comedic persona of filmmaker Andre Deed, is an absolute agent of chaos.
In the 1909 film, Cretinetti attempts to bring a tree home for a Christmas party. The destruction escalates wildly, culminating in an entire building falling to pieces.
If you can believe it, the stakes are even higher in the 1910 film, when Cretinetti can’t resist sneaking out of bed on Christmas Eve to snack on the candy decorating the tree. When Santa sees what Cretinetti has done, he chides him and takes him back to his workshop, which is apparently in heaven. Destruction ensues. Cretinetti then proceeds to cause havoc for Saint Peter, annoying god so much that he calls the devil to come get Cretinetti. Cretinetti is then chased to hell where demons try to cook him alive. Thankfully, spoiler alert, it was all a bad dream and he wakes up on Christmas morning with a terrible stomach ache.
The 1911 film returns to localized chaos. Cretinetti has a run-in with a mail carrier and his Christmas packages get mixed up with one of the carrier’s parcels. The parcel contains three bottles of ether which then begin to emit gasses in the middle of the family Christmas party.
I wasn’t familiar with Cretinetti before reviewing films for this list, but I’m definitely going to seek out more of Deed’s movies. Each of these films had well-executed chaotic slapstick; over-the-top in all the right ways.
7. Making Christmas Crackers (1910) (UK)
Produced by Cricks & Martin Films for Clarke, Nickolls, & Coombs Confectionery
To start, if you’re not sure what a Christmas cracker is, it’s a colorfully decorated paper tube that makes a cracking noise as you pull it open. Inside the tube is a paper hat, a joke, and/or a small toy. It’s a traditional part of UK Christmas celebrations.
This short starts as a documentary of the workers at Clarke, Nickolls, & Coombs constructing the crackers. It’s a fun thought that as early as 1910, people were interested in watching how mass-produced consumer goods were made. It’s also fun to see these skilled workers ply their trade so deftly (even though I’m sure wages and working conditions were less than ideal). The film ends with a family celebrating around a Christmas tree topped with a functional giant cracker.
8. A Christmas Carol (1910) (US)
Directed by J. Searle Dawley for Edison Films Manufacturing Company
There are so so so many film adaptations of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol made before 1920 that it was hard to choose which one to include on this list. In the end I chose this 1910 version for its economy of storytelling, fluid use of special effects, and for Marc McDermott’s great performance as Scrooge.
9. Broncho Billy’s Christmas Dinner (1911) (US)
Directed by Gilbert M. Anderson (Broncho Billy) for The Essanay Film Manufacturing Company
Gilbert M. Anderson was an incredibly prolific and popular filmmaker and star of early American film, particularly in his role as Broncho Billy. As was typical for Anderson, he’s pulling triple duty on Broncho Billy’s Christmas Dinner as the star, director, and producer. The film features a simple and heartwarming story.
On Christmas, Billy comes across a young woman in peril as her horses got startled and are now pulling her cart along wildly. Billy manages to wrangle the horses and in gratitude she invites him to Christmas dinner at her parents’ home. Unfortunately, her father happens to be the sheriff. But, all is well, as it turns out that Broncho Billy’s been given a pardon and the sheriff welcomes him to the table gladly.
The enduring appeal of outlaws or criminals getting into the Christmas spirit is fascinating to me and it’s cool to see such an early instance of the story!
10. Le Noel de la princesse / The Little Princess’s XMas Gift (1911) (FR)
Produced by Société Générale des Cinématographes Éclipse
In all honesty, this is the least Christmassy of all the films I included here, but its style and novelty stood out. The sets, costuming, and production design are lush. It might also be one of the weirdest Christmas stories I’ve even encountered.
After Lord Othberg passes away, the conniving Otto plans to assassinate the baby prince in order to inherit the lordship himself. He poisons the baby, but the princess prays for her baby brother to come back to life as her Christmas gift. An angel appears to her and they summon Jesus, who resurrects her baby brother. Of course, they then place the revivified baby in the castle’s nativity scene, to the joy of all but Otto.
11. Ida’s Christmas (1912) (US)
Directed by Van Dyke Brooke for Vitagraph Company of America
With a more classic Christmassy story, Ida’s Christmas tells us of a family who are facing hard times. Ida (played by a very small Dolores Costello) has her eyes on a pricey doll. Meanwhile, her mother seeks out employment with a wealthy family. The matriarch of the wealthy family overhears Ida’s wish and decides to buy the doll for her as a surprise. Later, Ida is distraught to find that the doll has been purchased but comes across a wallet that someone has dropped. She considers taking the money, but chases down the owner instead. The old man gives her some reward money for returning the wallet. Ida rushes to see if she can buy the doll, but has second thoughts when she thinks about how much her family could use the money. She arrives home with the money just in time for a Santa-esque old man to show up bearing packages and an assurance that the wealthy family has work for her father. The film ends with the family celebrating an unexpectedly Merry Christmas.
It’s a sweet story that hits so many beats of what we now consider traditional Christmas tales.
12. Rozhdestvo obitateley lesa / The Insect’s Christmas (1913) (RU)
Directed by Władysław Starewicz for Khanzhonkov
Fair warning, if you thought The Princess’s XMas Gift was odd, you might need to ready yourself for this one. Stop-motion virtuoso Władysław Starewicz (Ladislas Starevich) spins a tale about a tiny ornament of Santa/Ded Moroz coming to life on Christmas and going out into the wild to bring Christmas joy to creatures small and smaller, including a frog and a ladybug. Starewicz’s animation is as impeccable as ever and the short is imaginative and quirky.

Book Review: White World Order Black Power Politics
This is the first book I’ve read specifically because it related to my university courses, and I really enjoyed it. Written by Robert Vitalis, it explored international relations, essentially race relations, in the Jim Crow Era of America from a purely factual perspective. I really enjoyed reading it as it’s a history I don’t get to read a lot about; partially because I am British and thus the history curriculum is more focused on UK related topics, but partially because superpower countries like the USA and the UK alike constantly position themselves as heroic saviours in history, which is simply not true all the time. I think it’s really sad that the curriculum has yet to be decolonised, but I find it important to read books that will shape my understanding of the true and often erased history of influential people of colour. In this book, I read about schools/universities and their racial biases within their faculty and decision making, along with racial biases on larger scales, such as in political meetings. I learn about sociologist WEB Du Bois, a pan-Africanist activist; Ralph Bunche, a political scientist and Nobel Peace Prize winner; Merze Tate, a scholar and expert on US diplomacy, amongst many others. I read about their sheer intelligence and the new ideas they proposed to higher powers, but also about the discrimination they received for being black. The book itself was interesting, but a little inaccessible to me due to the language being used, however I hope to improve my reading level by reading a lot more, and have started on Judith Butler’s Gender Performativity.

Preaching the Islamic Conquest of the World... in Suburban Chicago
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By Daniel Greenfield
At a Ramada between the Schnitzel Platz and the Darussalam mosque, Islamists held a convention to discuss the conquest of the world. And, if the world was too ambitious a target, at the very least, India.
The Ramada was a humble base for the world conquerors of Hizb ut-Tahrir America flying the black flag of the Caliphate in a miserable hotel that Yelp reviews panned for rooms that, “smelled like a mixture of hookers, smoke, and hepatitis”, environs that made guests think they were “going to get shanked, raped or even both”, and the warning that, “even if this is the last hotel room in Illinois, DO NOT STAY HERE.”
But even Mohammed had to start in a hotel somewhere. And the Ramada of Mecca was even worse.
Many alumni of the global Hizb ut-Tahrir have gone on to bigger and better things. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed masterminded 9/11 and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi went on to create the terror group that would turn into ISIS. But after a decade of conferences, Hizb ut-Tahrir America is still failing.
Where its cousins in the UK and Australia had thousands of members, assaulting African Christians, forcing women to wear hijabs, calling for beheadings and honor killings, Hizb ut-Tahrir America is stuck in the world’s worst Ramada, trying to sell another Islamic conquest of a resurgent India.
The Chicago suburb of Glendale Heights had traditionally been home to German and Polish immigrants before being swamped by migrants and refugees. Glendale Heights was one of Illinois’ top destinations for refugee resettlement, there’s an ICNA, and assorted other Islamist infrastructure all over the place.
The Ramada had also been the site of Hizb ut-Tahrir America’s Khilafah or Caliphate conference last year which once again called for the establishment of an Islamic theocracy whose laws would no doubt necessitate the enslavement, rape, and murder of much of the population of the planet.
This year, Hizb ut-Tahrir America was celebrating the anniversary of the conquest of Constantinople at the Ramada. The Islamic genocide being celebrated near the Schnitzel Plaza with the hashtag #ConquestofIstanbul saw the streets covered in bodies and blood, men impaled, women and children raped by the armies of Mehmet II, the pedophile ruler who maintained a harem of young men.
As every devout Muslim “divinely guided” ruler should.
The theme of this year’s conference was using the subjugation of Constantinople, or as Hizb ut-Tahrir, whose name means Party of Liberation, called it, “The Liberation of Constantinople”, as a model.  After being “liberated”, Constantinople ceased to exist. That is what happens when Islamists liberate things.
...
After an extensive denunciation of the Indian infidels and their attempts to keep out Islamic illegal aliens from Pakistan, he angrily complained that the triple talaq, which allows Muslim men to divorce their wives by texting them, “I divorce you” three times, was being outlawed to protect Muslim women.
“Even our marital law is being legislated against,” the future caliph whined. Things haven’t gone so well since the group that "will carry the Jihad towards India and across the world” had its big day.
...
Sultan Ghiyasuddin Dhamgani is described as having ordered his men to impale Hindu prisoners, and then "their wives were killed and tied by their hair to these poles. Little children were massacred on the bosoms of their mothers and their corpses left there."
As colonial occupations go, no one beats the Islamic colonial occupations which leave nothing except mosques, Koran memorization contests, and mountains of skulls.
Tamerlane coolly describes beheading 10,000 people so that, "the sword of Islam was washed in the blood of the infidels."
Mahmud of Ghazni's secretary had recorded taking "500,000 slaves beautiful men and women” from among the "enemies of Allah". While the enemies of Allah are all non-Muslims, these particular enemies would have been Hindus. Why these male and female slaves had to be described as "beautiful" by these devout Muslims is best left to the imagination of anyone familiar with the haram bisexual harems.
These are the glories of Islamic liberation. They are as lovely as the unclean toilets of the Ramada.
"Allah promised the Ummah (Muslims) in the Koran that they will inherit this earth," Taiseer Hussein, a Hizb ut-Tahrir member, ranted in a second speech. "That the Ummah will rule over this earth."
That included the imminent conquests of Rome, India, Israel, and Spain.
"We, as a nation, will witness, Allah willing, the return of the Caliphate upon the method of the Prophet and then as a nation, we will open Rome and liberate Palestine and the rest," the rant went. "Under the Caliphate, Rome will be opened, Kashmir will be liberated, India will be liberated, Palestine will be liberated, Andalusia... Sometimes we forget about Andalusia, which is known as Spain."
It wouldn’t do to forget Spain, while preaching the conquest of the world from Glendale Heights.
Hizb ut-Tahrir claims that it’s a non-violent organization. But what exactly was the “method of the Prophet”? And India was conquered through the genocide of countless millions of Hindus.
The “rule of Allah” that Hizb ut-Tahrir’s Sharia nerds wax rhapsodic over was mass murder.
...
The Islamist group has the grandiose vision of ISIS, it squawks about an Islamic State, but has no ability to implement it. That’s why its former members went on to found ISIS and mastermind 9/11. It has the complex doctrinal plans of the Muslim Brotherhood, but, despite all the theory, none of the infrastructure of cells and influential members with an actual pathway to taking over countries.
Hizb ut-Tahrir outfits in the UK and Australia got attention and members by being provocative. But Hizb ut-Tahrir America already had trouble booking hotels, and now it’s stuck in a dirty Ramada vowing that India, and then Rome, Israel, India, and finally Spain, will fall to the faithful forces of Islam.
-----------------------------------------------
The 2016 Hizb-ut Tahrir America conference featured the adamant declaration that, “Islam is here to dominate.” Here meaning the United States of America!
youtube
Of course, they are preaching jihad and conquest of the infidels on all your favorite social media sites.

Gig Review: Fever 333 - Kentish Town Forum, London (7 November 2019)
Tumblr media
I understand why Fever 333 prefer to present their concerts as ‘Demonstrations’. It’s not just for the political message of their songs, but also due to just how impassioned the crowd of fans were with every word of vocalist Jason Aalon Butler. It was less of a typical gig, and instead felt like an evening of musical dissidence and subversion.
Tumblr media
With the group choosing to forgo the musical mainstreams and avoid enlisting support acts for the gig, using the rationale that were the concert to be panned or ill-attended, then it would only result poorly for all involved, and also potentially dilute the political sentiment of their art, the band will have been relieved by the audience’s willingness to be attentive. Despite being a heavier band, the crowd were more than happy to listen during the softer moments, and serenade rather than scream where necessary. With the band happy to limit their sweeping political beliefs, and at points bemoan points focussed more locally on the music industry, whether it was disproportionate payment for support bands, or lacking female representation in the industry, its safe to say their ideals are rational crowd-pleasers, which the audience would be foolhardy to protest.
Tumblr media
Reviewing Fever 333 is a difficult proposition, as it is at the reviewer’s discretion how to separate the event and the experience, to what extent one can separate the music from the message. My review is positive so far, and that’s without even really going into the music, and only analysing the air of optimism, acceptance and positivity that was on show. Hence why I mentioned the apt description of the concerts as ‘demonstrations’.
Tumblr media
But of course, the performance itself was immense, an unsurprising feat when considering the backgrounds of each member. With Butler hailing from Letlive, guitarist Stephen ‘Stevis’ Harrison having been a member of Georgia metalcore staple The Chariot, and drummer Aric Improta being a member of experimental Post-Rock/Prog-Metal band Night Verses (as well as popular on youtube for his drumming theatrics), each member has consummate experience in causing chaos live. For that very reason, its hard to not view the band as a supergroup, with the trio sharing an incredible dynamic that ensures each has their moment to make their prowess known, without upstaging other members and overshadowing the group’s impassioned message of equality and solidarity.
Tumblr media
The band were able to play through a setlist that included both popular singles like ‘Made an America’ and ‘Burn It’, as well as more unexpected oddities, such as free single ‘Trigger’, a softer acoustic version of ‘Am I Here?’ with Jason sat behind a keyboard on the balconies, or in a truly unexpected manner, a rendition of Green Day’s ‘Brain Stew’ accompanied by Nova Twins, and including snippets of ‘Old Town Road’ in the process. It’s probably safe to say that wasn’t on anyone’s bingo sheet.
Tumblr media
Fever 333 are a powerhouse, and whilst many bands find themselves reluctant to present personal politics and views in their content, the group have found great popularity in the UK with it. With this gig only being the group’s third headline London concert, it is safe to say there is an audience for many more.

Miraculous Ladybug Production Analysis
Today, I will be reviewing Miraculous Ladybug on the production quality. This goes on video quality and knowing its original format. We will be going over the base resolution, framerate, audio, and others. I've done some test by analyzing different sources of the show, and to see the techneical side.
Miraculous Ladybug credit goes to Zagtoon. Images are used for demonstration.
Video Resolution
On TV stations and on digital distribution, it is common to air or stream it on 1080p. In fact, most anime are digitally drawn on lower resolution than 1080p. For Miraculous Ladybug, this is the case.
Miraculous Ladybug is rendered at 720p, across all episodes and specials as of current. By taking some frames from Netflix stream, it is clearly upscaled from 720p. I did some check by looking at individual screenshots of the show and look at it on Photoshop. Looking at the characters hairs and some edges, you can tell that the source is upscaled.
It is common for a 3D animated TV show to render at lower resolution than 1080p, aside from the texts and the credits. The credits are clearly 1080p while the background is just upscaled to 720p. The text are clearly sharp and doesn't have anti-aliasing. The Ladybug icon on the left is also 1080p. On the opening, only the text are rendered at 1080p, but it's not as sharp as the credits. Still, it doesn't have jagged edges on the texts. Again, it is mixed with 720p background. Also, the logo scene seems to fit well with debicubic filter. I've tested upscaling filters with Avisynth on the frames to see what was the best. It seems like the studio actually use Bicubic scaling with Blur=1, and Ringing=3 setting. It is the default filter setting on Avisynth's Bicubic filter. I've check some masking between original frame and debicubic and use bicubic again, there was no difference aside from blurring out small compression artifacts caused by streaming.
So clearly, the show is upscaled from 720p with Bicubic filtering, with texts being full HD, especially seeing the credits.
(Although, the scene where Plagg gets sucked in on Stormy Weather, the vertical resolution looks like it's half. We know the show is not interlaced, but what happened?)
Tumblr media
(Look at the edges of the objects when watching 1080p quality. It is certainly upscaled. Images from Robostus episode and The Bubbler)
Tonemapping
Like most 3D television shows, all scenes are tonemapped to sRGB/rec.709 colorspace. No HDR or wide color gamut is natively supported. Since it is tonemapped to SDR displays, at certain points, Ladybug's outfits seems to have slight red value cut. It is seen when the red shades are over 255 red value, that it can't go brighter and either shows red banding, or red highlight details may be lost. However, the problem is minor, since other color values are present to shade over it.
Overall, the show looks colorful and looks nice for any displays.
Tumblr media
(The suit seems to lost some the bump mapping due to compressed tonemapping? Images from Stormy Weather.)
Framerate
By looking at available sources, it seems like the show is rendered at 24fps. By watching Princess Fragrance and The Mime from official Miraculous Ladybug Youtube channel, I can hear the speed difference from most sources that plays at 25fps. It supposed to sound like the 24fps version. Background music tracks and the theme song are available. They seem to match the episodes' audio speed by reconizing the tempo. A lot of sources are seen as 25fps, with the audio sped up without altering the pitch. Technecally speaking, it would be 23.976fps instead of 24fps, but still is.
Framerate Conversion list
As said above, a lit of sources found are playing the episodes at 25fps with sped up audio, but no audio pitch has changed. It's common for PAL conversion to speed up 24fps content to match their 50hz displays (aside from portable displays and computer monitors show natively 60hz). However, in recent years, they use better technology to speed up the audio without altering the pitch, so that it stays true to the pitch of the original format. That way, no one can tell the difference.
Since PAL regions use the format above, I'll list the countries and channels that airs in 60hz or NTSC regions.
South Korea:
The show is aired in the original format. It's 24fps on all channels that airs the show.
Japan:
The show airs in the original format.
Brazil:
The show airs in the original format.
Canada:
Quebec airs the french version, but airs it at 24fps. Family Channel airs it the same way too.
United States:
On Nickelodeon, they would air it at 25fps. Even though most content in the country would air at 24fps, 30fps, or 60fps, Nickelodeon decides to air their shows at 25fps to make more room for commericals to earn more revenue. That also means they cut the credit sequences for the same reason too, with the credits displayed on last 30-seconds of each episode. The audio pitch is unaltered, however. Even their streaming services airs the show at 25fps. Few of their early episodes has wrong conversion on their website, by converting from 25fps to 24fps, albert, with interlaceing, for some weird reason. They look terrible when Nickelodeon had them on their website back in 2015. It is unknown if KidsClick airs it in the original format since I never watch the show from their platform.
Latin America:
This is the most weird conversion of them all. While the show airs at 24fps, Disney Channel LA did the inverse of PAL conversion. THAT MEANS the audio pitch is LOWER than most sources! When I saw their commericals or clips of the recordings taken from their channel, I can hear the audio pitch being altered, but not the typical PAL way. It is very uncommon for NTSC standards to do this sort of thing. I even went to Costa Rica to hear how the show plays over there. I hear the audio pitch being lower as of last year. This is very rare for any channels over there to do this. I don't know what source Disney Channel LA got for the episodes, but it seems like they got 25fps ones and decides to think it is converted already for PAL regions. Very weird. However, streaming services outside the channel never had this issue. It is unknown if PAL countries like Argentina did this too. Their Disney Channel is basically the same, except it's their timeline and broadcasts in PAL format, 50hz.
It is possible that each country can air the show in their own local channel. However, you would have to be in the spanish community to know if they're playing the show correctly.
Netflix:
As far as I know, they have the episodes at 25fps everywhere. iTunes:
Not sure if they still have it, but I remember them having 25fps playback.
Youtube:
Only Princess Fragrance and The Mime are available. It is in the original format, and so as the clips on their Youtube channel.
Overall, it is commonly seen as 25fps in most platforms. I'm not sure if they preserve 25fps on Shouts Factory's DVDs R1.
Blu-Rays
There hasn't been a Blu-Ray release for the series. It's not uncommon for the series to be released on Blu-Ray. Star Wars The Clones Wars, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Samuari Jack, and Batman Animated series has got blu-ray releases at 1080p. DVDs are never HD, and are usually compresses poorly due to using MPEG2 codec from 1990s. You can only find the HD versions on digital platforms. I only know iTunes would do digital release of their episodes. You may have to rip the episodes yourself from other digital platforms. I know not many TV series here have blu-ray releases, but majority of the medias are movies and anime. In Japan, they have very high sale rates on Blu-Ray releases. Not only you get to watch the episodes without internet, but you have very high quality studio like video at the highest resolution with barely video compression artifacts.
Audio
It is common to have stereo audio on TV shows. However, Netflix seems to have 5.1 Surround Sound audio for the show. Usually, the voices are at the front speakers, while you hear the rest of the sound everywhere, with panning from one or multiple speakers to the next. Nickelodeon has aired the show in surrounded sound format before on their HD channels.
Censorship
Miraculous Ladybug is a family friendly TV series, and nothing weird or inappropiate is in it. It was intentionally made for worldwide audience. However, very few television networks made their censorships to any shows. Miraculous Ladybug never got cuts or alterations for anything, but rather small decisions.
On Disney Channel UK, they did a simple motion blur on some scenes to avoid or reduce fast motion lights to reduce risks of seizures. Most notably, the transformation scenes, catching the Akumas, flying butterflies restoring damaged properties, and fast fight scenes that takes big part of the screen. On Frame-by-Frame, the image either have the next frame blended on the current frame, previous frame blended on the current, or both.
Reducing seizures by motion blur may help, but the show doesn't have any strobe or seizure induring scenes. Most broadcasts would leave the show alone. Even Japan leaves the video untouched, despite having paka-paka laws in place on TV broadcasts for airing Electric Soldier Porygon in December 1997. All TV shows have the "Watch in bright lit room" notice on the beginning of the episode in Japan.
Saudi Arabia has skipped Copycat for some reason.
Tumblr media
(The bottom one is from Disney Channel UK. All episodes are censored this way to reduce fast bright objects.)
Conclusion
Miraculous Ladybug is rendered at 720p 24fps, with sRGB/rec.709 colorspace. The framerate, whether you're watching 24fps or 25fps, you wouldn't hear the audio pitch being different on the latter, so it's fine. The audio is maxed to 5.1 Surround Sound. Censorship goes from very small to none.
The overall TV show's quality seems pretty good for a TV series. Netflix has all the episodes for two seasons. Even if watching upscaled content, it still looks pretty fine. The audio and sound editing seems pretty great. The animation is smooth overall. The second season is the best season so far. It can be possible that later on, the series may start doing native 1080p rendering. It could be due to the fact that ray tracing on the studio's budget would take too long to render 1080p. Hopefully, native 1080p may soon be used for the future.

周采芹 Tsai Chin
The World Of Tsai Chin
@ 1962 UK Pressing
*****
Tsai Chin (Chinese: 周采芹; pinyin: Zhōu Cǎiqín) (born 30 November 1933) is a China-born British actress, singer, director, teacher and author best known in America for her role as Auntie Lindo in the film The Joy Luck Club.
Her career spans more than six decades and three continents. She starred onstage in London's West End in The World of Suzie Wong, and on Broadway in Golden Child. Tsai Chin appeared in two James Bond films: as a Bond girl in You Only Live Twice; and Casino Royale. Her single, "The Ding Dong Song," recorded for Decca, hit the top of the music charts in Asia. She was the first acting instructor to be invited to teach acting in China after the Cultural Revolution, when China's universities re-opened. In China she is best known for her portrayal of Grandmother Jia in the 2010 TV drama series The Dream of Red Mansions.
Tsai Chin was born on 30 November 1933, in Tianjin, China, where her father was on tour. She is the third daughter of the legendary Peking opera actor and singer Zhou Xinfang (1895—1975) and Western-educated mother Lilian Qiu (aka Lilian Ju; 1905—1968). Chin has a brother, Michael Chow.
She grew up in Shanghai's French Concession, where (under her western name, "Irene Chow") she received a multi-lingual education at The Convent of the Sacred Heart, Mctyeire School (中西女中) in Shanghai, and King George V School in Hong Kong. During her childhood, Tsai Chin was witness to colonial occupation, Japanese invasion of China, Chinese Civil War, and the Communist take-over in 1949.
At the age of 17, she left Shanghai and was sent to England to study at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she was the first Chinese student in the art academy. Tsai Chin later became an Associate Member of The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She earned a master's degree at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts.
Tsai Chin's first significant film role came when she was cast in the film The Inn of Sixth Happiness (1958), in which she played the adopted daughter of Ingrid Bergman's character. Her big break, though, arrived when two Broadway shows came to London at the same time. Initially, Tsai Chin was cast as one of the two leads in the musical Flower Drum Song. However, she also auditioned for the play The World of Suzie Wong for which she was offered the title role. The Daily Mail quoted Chin as saying, "I had a terrible decision to make." She opted to star as Suzie Wong at The Prince of Wales Theatre, London (1959–1961), where she saw her name in lights for the first time. The play, generally panned by the critics, was a commercial hit. Chin drew good reviews, with Milton Shulman of the Evening Standard saying, "Tsai Chin is a lovely creature with all the vivacity, simplicity and gusts of unpredictable Eastern temperament." Harold Hobson of the Sunday Times said, "Tsai Chin who has cool clear beauty and considerable talent."
To compensate Tsai Chin for not being able to do the musical Flower Drum Song, producer, Donald Albery granted her request to sing a song in The World of Suzie Wong. She chose a lyrical Chinese song, "Second Spring" (第二春), which was translated into English as "The Ding Dong Song", by Lionel Bart. Tsai Chin recorded the song in 1960 for Decca Records in London. The single, arranged and conducted by music director Harry Robinson, became a hit, particularly in Asia.
Tsai Chin followed this success by recording several more singles and two LPs, later incorporating many of these songs, written specifically for her, into a cabaret act which she performed from 1961 to 1966. As well as touring her cabaret show throughout the United Kingdom, she also performed in London's most exclusive venues, including the Dorchester, the Savoy, the Society, and frequently Quaglino's and Allegro, sharing a bill with David Frost, then at the start of his illustrious career. Her cabaret act was also aired on television in Switzerland and the Netherlands. Variety called her a "Savvy entertainer, with most of her material tailor-made for her personality." London's Evening News was "impressed…by the way she held her audience wasn't a murmur not even the clatter of one piece of cutlery."
The Cultural Revolution started in 1966. China shut itself off from the rest of the world and artists were purged, which eventually claimed the lives of both her parents.
