Writing Challenge Day Twenty-six: Replacement

Day Twenty-five -- Masterpost -- Day Twenty-Seven

Being an inorganic yet sentient being in the middle of the aftermath of the follies of humanity, Nick Valentine had far too much time to think about his own existence. After all, the scientists at the Institute had inserted the memories of the previously living and breathing Nick Valentine into his current synth body. There would always be the question of how much of his personality was his own and how much was derived from the pre-war detective. It was something he had to grasp nearly every day of his continued life.

Today, however, Nick had something more immediate to focus on. 

He’d heard a snap coming from below. While looking down to see just what was going on, Nick had stepped over a fairly large crack in the pavement of the town he had been passing through. Instead of being able to take that step, he instead had his face introduced to the ground by way of his now broken right leg. 

It didn’t hurt, exactly, but an unconscious “ow” came from the synth anyway.

“What was that, Nick? Did something fall?” Came the raspy voice of one of his travel companions. A couple of boot steps later and he didn’t have to look up to know that Hancock was looking down at the damage. The ghoul gave a sharp inhale. “Oooh...that doesn’t look right. And I’ve seen plenty of fucked up bodies around.” 

“What’s going on?” The far more higher pitched voice of Nick’s other companion asked as several gravel-crunching steps got closer to his prone position. He didn’t have to count down to when she saw the injury, because she was immediately screeching. “WHAT THE FUCK!! NICK!!”

“Your concern over my well being is much appreciated.” He deadpanned as he rolled into a sitting position. “Other than having some face plastic a little squished, nothing else of mine got hurt, Cat.” Nick plucked his hat from where it had landed on the ground and gave it a brushing off while he got a good look at the break. Like the peanut gallery had made explicit, the break had happened around his knee joint. This made the leg bend in what would be an unnatural way if he had a human body. If he were more squeamish, he might also have reacted the same way as his companions.

Replacing the hat on his head, Nick rolled up his pant leg to assess the damage up close. He couldn’t help the wince as his more intact hand came across what the source of the snap had been. A bolt in the connector that helped his knee act the way it was supposed to had rusted completely. The snap had been the metal finally giving into the corrosion that time couldn’t stop. Now the pieces that made him able to walk were loose in a bad way. 

At least the break hadn’t severed any of the tubes that contained the fluids he needed to keep running. This was fixable. There were plenty of things that Nick Valentine had broken or worn out that couldn’t be.

“Don’t suppose either of you have a bolt this size handy?” With his “skeletal” metal hand, he plucked out the rusted cylinder from where it had landed among the nest of wires that made his leg move.

“Uhhh…” Hancock dug around in the pockets of the colonial coat that he insisted on wearing, dumping out the contents as he went. A half-full bag of bottle caps, some spent ammo shells, a package of Radaway, and a frankly absurd amount of blunts and other drug paraphernalia were left on the road once he was finished. “Well shit.” The ghoul even turned his pockets inside out as if they would have something useful now that they were empty. “No dice, Nicky.” 

“I’m surprised you don’t have dice, Hancock.” Cat gently prodded a finger at the Radaway. “And why do you have this?? You don’t need to worry about radiation.” 

“It’s for you, little bit.” There was an implied eye roll. Implied because Hancock didn’t have eyes so to speak. Nick did it for him. His neon-yellow ones could more than make up for the lack of eyes for the ghoul to roll. “You’re still all soft and squishy unlike us dried out oldies.” 

“Speak for yourself,” Was the synth’s immediate reply.

Cat was making a face. She always was, but this one was a far more specific I-can-take-care-of-my-own-damn-self-thank-you-very-much face. For once, she didn’t voice the thought aloud. Instead, she also patted around her pockets for anything that could be useful for repairing Nick’s leg. The stuff she kept on herself was just as useless for the current situation: a pack of chewing gum, loose hair ties, her own stash of caps, most of a granola bar, several pre-war coins, and a rubber banded set of playing cards. 

“So a load of bupkis is we’ve got altogether.” Both girl and ghoul looked at Nick like he grew another head. “Pre-war word. Not real sure what it means either, it just showed up.” Like a variety of other traits that synth-Nick still discovered about human-Nick. Now wasn’t the time to wallow, though. “Back on topic: We’ve got nothing between the three of us and we’re gonna lose time if we don’t find another bolt.” He searched his short term memory for anything relevant. Sooner than he’d expected, he found something. “We passed by a hardware store a short while back, there might be a bolt like that in there.”

“I can go--” Cat bounced on her toes waving a hand in the air like she desperately wanted to get picked by a teacher. Before she could finish her sentence, though, Hancock had leaned over and ruffled her fluffy brown hair.

“Nah, I’ll do it.” He gave a lazy grin. “Someone ought to keep Nicky company, and I can carry way more stuff than you.”

“I just need a bolt not the whole damn store.” Nick grumbled. 

Ignoring the comment, she folded her arms in a huffy pout. “But what about you? You won’t have anyone watching your back.”

“I’ll be more than fine alone. I’ve been doing it for way longer than you’ve been alive, Cat, and I’ll be doin’ it a while after you--” He paused, then turned on his heels and got walking before either the detective or the young woman could comment or follow him. 

“HEY!” Cat made to go after him. A sudden pressure on her wrist made her stop what she was doing and look down. Nick shook his head very slightly. “But he’s--!”

“Gonna be fine.” The synth patted the ground next to him. “In the meantime it’s gonna be boring as all hell out here looking out for things that wanna eat us. Let’s play a few rounds til Hancock gets back.” 

She gave him a pouty glare, but eventually relented and sat down with enough space between them to start a card game.

He was pretending to not notice Cat cheating when the ghoul finally came back with way more bolts than needed for the repair.
