Leaning the umbrella over to your side, he once again thinks of the quickest path to a shelter he knows of. It’s around here somewhere.

Still, that won't seem to make the journey any less difficult. The rain was stubborn—as stubborn and proud as a man he knows—the thunder bellowing every once in a while to scare the daylights out of you. Though the forest was easier to navigate for the likes of him, it definitely doesn’t make it any less pleasant to tread through. He, himself, feels unpleasant walking through the forest in a state like this. 

A surprise, however, soon comes to the young man. It appears that, at some point, you have noticed the position of the umbrella, and your conscience couldn't seem to take the unfairness for his side, because you had let your bodies huddle a little closer. Your hand even lightly holds onto his tunic as you look elsewhere. 

Hoseok hides a smile at all of this. How sweet of her to care. 

It was fortunate for the both of you that it didn't take too long for you to have reached your destination—just as the umbrella was about to give up, too. He steps under the stone roofing, arm gesturing with a welcome. "Here we are," he sings, tossing the umbrella aside and wringing out the rainwater from his clothes. 

You gawk at the structure of the building as you step under its shade, the frown and furrow between your brows deepening. It was dark—especially with much of the moon obscured by heavy rain clouds—but you could make some sense of your surroundings. “This is a shrine,” you tell him, matter-of-factly, staying put where you were. 

Hoseok stifles a chuckle. “And?”

A frantic trace of panic besets your face at his lack of concern. “We may offend the deity that reigns over this place,” you scold him, crossing your arms across your chest. 

This refusal comes across as puzzling for him. He supposed all mortals are devoted in some sense of respect and fear for the gods, but you were walking too carefully on eggshells—driven mostly in fear. Have you or your family offended a god before?

Hoseok doesn't linger on the thought any longer, giving you an assuring smile instead. “It’ll be alright,” he tells you, “Trust me.”

It’s my shrine after all.

a/n: obligatory shirtless marc gif for what lies ahead i actually had fun and laughed at myself writing this. shit's about to get real in the next part, but i haven't written it yet. i'm also going on a trip, so... that update is a lot unsure. i'll try to stick to the usual wednesday, 9am pht.

“No!” You yelled at Layla as soon as you got to the airport exit.

“You can find Marc way faster than me. Just make sure he doesn’t get himself killed while I reacquaint myself with some old friends.”

You looked at her unimpressed. Not counting the fact that you did not know Marc at all, you were very wary over the fact that there was strong deity magic at play all over Cairo.

You weren’t going to disturb another one.

“Just two days. And I’ll call you every day.” She slipped a burner phone in your jacket pocket. “I promise.”

Sigh. You relented.

Layla was right.

You found Marc staying at a shoddy inn within a couple of hours.

You knocked and waited for a good ten minutes at his door before it opened.

Dear Lord.

Steven – or rather, Marc drunkenly swayed at the door, wearing nothing but boxer shorts.

You knew you felt some muscle when you snogged Steven a couple times, but you didn’t expect him to actually look like he did before you.

An annoyed grunt pulled you out of your staring.

“Oh, hi, Marc.”

SLAM!

You knocked incessantly at his door, until it angrily swung open the second time.

“What?!”

“I can help you find Harrow.”

Now, you sat in his messy room, glass strewn across the floor from a broken mirror that was hastily covered by a blanket.

“Well?”

You clicked your tongue behind your teeth before you shushed him.

“This is a waste of time. Get out. Go home.”

You glared at him. If it weren’t for Layla…

“Harrow has powers that shields him from Bakunawa’s sight, but he’s here.”

“No shit. Do you even know how big Cairo is?”

Your eyes flash topaz as you hissed at him. “Careful, mortal.”

You slam your fist on the floor, pushing Bakunawa back down, then rose to your feet.

“Get dressed. There’s a guy who knows something about a dig site. That’s a start.”

Then the idiot left you in the middle of the road half an hour later.

“Layla, your husband is a fucking flight risk.”

“Get used to it. I’m a little busy tracing an old collector friend. Just find him again.”

“What am I? A bloodhound?”

Two hours later, you were at a cliff, not far from the city.

Ah, the little serpent has found you once again.

You desperately tried to ignore the bodies littered across the ground, keeping your eyes on Marc, yet the smell of blood was taking over your attention.

“I’m guessing you missed the information about the dig site?”

That got me a chuckle from ol’ Grampa Crow.

“Why don’t you play with your little rocks and be some help in finding Ammit, huh?”

“So, now you’re willing to have me stick around and not leave me in the middle of the road to go on a murder spree?”

“Hey, I did not do this,” Marc pointed a finger in your face.

“Sure, they all stabbed each other and dropped dead,” you rolled your eyes and shoved his hand away, but not before you noticed the open cut on his arm.

You took a bottle of water from your bag and poured it over his arm.

“You just got my jacket and jeans we—” “Shush.”

You covered the wound with your hand, summoning the strength of any nearby Diwata for their healing powers. Your hands briefly glowed an icy blue before it faded into Marc’s cut, sealing it shut and leaving his arm good as new.

“The armour could’ve fixed that easily.”

Wow, he’s an asshole. Just like his master, the sand Diwata scoffed, unknown to Marc, before vanishing back into its realm.

Tell me about it.

Since Marc was being difficult, you turned to Khonshu instead. “Any better ideas? It seems like even Harrow’s followers are shielded from any form of divination.”

“What about the other gods? Are they just gonna stand by and allow somebody to unleash Ammit?” To signal for an audience with the gods is to risk their wrath.

“Can we trust the old bird?” you turned slightly to mumble to Bakunawa.

Khonshu and his Avatars have not fared well to any gods, deities, and other Avatars for the past centuries. I suggest we go back to London.

You rolled your eyes. “Are you sure this isn’t you being moon-hungry talking?”

If I wanted the moon, I could’ve easily taken over your body and slit your wimp’s throat to draw out the bird.

“Try to keep it family friendly, why don’t you?”

Suddenly, it was quiet, and you could feel the wind change.

You turned to Marc and Khonshu.

“What did you do?” “What are you doing?”

Sending the gods a signal they can’t ignore.

You felt the familiar movement of Bakunawa under your skin, tattoos moving like scales.

When you looked up at the sky, it was a solar eclipse.

“No! What did you do?!” Your voice began blending between yours and Bakunawa’s.

“Hey, what’s happening?” Marc grasped your biceps, which only caused searing pain even on your clothed skin.

He immediately let go of you, and for a moment, the concern in his eyes almost made you mistake him for Steven.

“No,” you panted. “Go. You need… to go… now. While I can… still control him.”

I suggest you do as the little serpent says, Marc.

“Shut up, you worthless god!”

Your outburst suddenly changed Marc’s stance. He now looked more alert, defensive.

“Bakunawa?”

It was supposed to be a day like any other. You were supposed to wake up with a good morning text or call from your other half, get ready for the day, plough through your to-do list, and end the night with a video call if Hoseok was available for it. It was supposed to be a good day—not that you think you won't have any bad days either, but this? 

This is beyond any of your expectations.

The screen displays your face among a group—one that a friend of Jiwoo's took while you were all out together at a restaurant for lunch. It wasn't your best picture—your outfit serving averagely, and your face marred with traces of exhaustion from jet lag—but it's a good memory nonetheless. 

You had just landed then in Seoul and because he was too busy to meet you out right, Hoseok had to leave you under his older sister's guidance for the first three days. It brings a smile to your face remembering how nervous you were, and how that nervousness melted away when Jiwoo and her friend welcomed you warmly, showing you around their favorite spots in Seoul. 

How unfortunate that a capture of that precious time was used in a gossip article.

This wasn’t in my plans (only planned oneshots for the series really) but I saw that the older oneshots in the series were only around 3-4k words each while Jin & Joon’s (being the most recent) are around 10k+ and are more rich in their stories than the first ones. 

SO, when I had an idea for a follow-up, I seized the chance to make a drabble! ... only that the drabble ended up n o t a drabble so... uh... there’s that (;´༎ຶД༎ຶ`) 👍

The Backstory (Layla el-Faouly x Bakunawa!Reader)

a/n: can we talk about how pretty layla is in this lighting? i'm not exactly sure if this is long or short, but i tried to really starting explaining how bakunawa's and reader's powers work. more on marc's intro.

Layla drove you to what used to be her shared flat with Marc.

Though you refused the tea she offered, Layla shoved the mug in your hands and insisted you drink.

“Sorry?” you said when you heard her say something.

Your hands were still shaking, and your ears ringing with Bakunawa’s pained screeches.

“How long have you been… that? Are you an Avatar?”

“Not quite.” Then you noticed the tiny cuts and bruises on her arms now that Layla shed her jacket.

“May I?” you held out your hand.

Looking quite hesitant for a moment, Layla handed you her right arm.

Muttering a hushed incantation for a nearby Diwata, you gently drew a healing spell on Layla’s bruises with your index finger, and before her eyes, the cuts and bruises disappeared.

Layla didn’t look surprised. She often witnesses Marc getting shot and healed in a matter in seconds.

Though it didn’t stop her from being perplexed when she experienced it for her own.

“How… how did you? Was it the snake?”

You laughed sheepishly. “No, uh… That’s all me. I’ve been healing Steven’s muscle pains without him knowing. Turns out it was Marc causing those.”

“That doesn’t explain anything.”

Realising that you actually haven’t told anyone – other than people from your village – what you were, you ended up stammering incoherent details to Layla.

“Hey, it’s okay.” Layla covered your clammy hand in between hers, and you instinctively intertwined your fingers together. “Just start from the beginning.”

And so, you did…

You told her everything about your village where babaylans, ancient Filipina shamans and witches, and their magic were still practiced.

How you were born to and trained under two babaylan mothers, how your power and connection towards the engkantos were strong, how you went through the initiation rites before your 12th birthday.

How the elders lowered you in that water tank where they would leave you until the next dawn, how you sank under the cold water only illuminated by the moon light, how they did not expect Bakunawa himself to manifest in you.

How the only solution the elders had was to imprison the serpent deity inside you where you could harness his power instead of him you.

“Then a lunar eclipse happened shortly and…”

“And?” Layla pressed on.

Blood, screams, spells bouncing off Bakunawa’s scaled armor…

People – your people – who were supposed to protect you, were now hunting you across the river…

… and the monster they trapped in you was the one protecting you.

“Run! Don’t come back. I’ll hold them off as long as I can, but you need to stay away from the village. The elders won’t stop until they’ll enslave you and Bakunawa. You need to go. NOW!”

“Nothing,” you smiled tightly. “I meant to say Bakunawa’s power draws from the moon and eclipses, especially lunar ones.”

At that moment, Layla could see why Steven was drawn to you.

You were like Marc – secretly closed off yet fiercely protective.

Layla knew that you were hiding more but decided not to push it when you already divulged so much.

You were aware of her perception of you as well.

And you were also aware that you were still holding Layla’s hand too, grateful for the mere strength her touch gave you.

"So, Layla... tell me about this husband of yours."

So, anyway, later tonight when I have more time, I’m going to post what there is of “Physician Heal Thyself” to AO3 because why not?

It’s not going to be updated with any regularity (like now), but it will be more permanently available and easier to find. (Yay?)

I’m debating posting some of my older FF.net stuff there, too. I’m not taking anything off FF.net, they’d still be there also, but AO3 is by design more permanent. Does that make sense? It’s not a grab for more views or anything, it’s just I’ve found AO3 bookmarks for my FF stuff and it feels like they had to put in so much more effort, and FF has purged things before. All my stuff there is very tame (especially compared to some of my AO3 stuff), but I worry they may decide to get rid of “inactive accounts” that haven’t posted in a long time. AO3 makes editing much easier, too.

I dunno. Thoughts?
