Cannon Dancer – Osman Review (on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox)
A “now” retro game released as a coin-operated arcade game in 1996, Cannon Dancer, also known as “Osman” in the US, has become an absolute legend in arcade history. Cannon Dancer (Osman) is an Action Jump & Run set in a dystopian late 21st century, in which the world is under the control of a single federal government. One day, a new threat known as “Abdullah the Slaver” – an evil sorceress who…

Unsurprisingly, no attention was paid to Mr. Osman's English class, nor to Mr. Mundy's math class. As easy as it had been been to push the rumors to the back of my head, a single thought made my anxiety cripple.
People believe Eddie had punched Lewenski was bad.
It was just bad.
There were certain people who eagerly awaited for a reason to go after Eddie Munson, that was no secret.
So far, I —like many others— had simply turned a blind eye to that treatment, but this time I wouldn't be able to. I was not only actively involved in the situation; it would be entirely on me if someone decided to do anything to Eddie as some kind of vendetta regarding the previous Friday evening.
The bell rang, signalling the beginning of our cherished lunch break, and, most importantly, giving my friends the cue to torment me with questions.
"Stop." I raised my hand at them once the three surrounded me on our way out of Mr. Mundy's classroom.
"We didn't say anything!" Linda complained, throwing her hands up in the air.
"You were about to!" I snapped, spinning my head to her fast enough to give me whiplash.
"We just wanna know the truth behind all the gossip." Lizzy, who walked at the far left of our group, bent forward in order to meet my gaze.
I sighed, accommodating the books against my chest. "Okay so, he drove me to the arcade. We got a couple of weird looks but we had a good time." I pursed my lips, remembering our date.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"And when's that test?" I questioned distractedly, sparing Eddie a glance. We had settled for a lonely coin-op machine at the far end of the Arcade. That way, we had our privacy as well as a good look of the scene taking place at the games room.
"Tuesday," he responded, playing with the chains on his denim jeans in an absentminded manner. "but we can study on Monday."
"You know?" I stood upright to take a better look at him. "that's why you need tutoring."
Raising his eyebrows, he lightheartedly mocked my voice. "'You know? that's why you need tutoring'. Okay, mother." I stuck my tongue out to him, which earned my shoulder a soft shove. "Stop talking about school and focus on the game."
"I suck at the game, in case you didn't notice."
"May I?"
Eddie pushed himself off the cabinet's side while I took a step back, motioning at the console with both hands for him to take my spot.
"Actually," he began, choosing to reach his hands out for mine instead of for the controllers. "Let's kill two birds in one stone."
"How?" Though my inquiry held hesitation, I let myself be led back to the front of the machine.
I prayed for Eddie not to notice the way my shoulders tensed up when he, letting go of me, circled my form to stand right behind me, his forearms nonchalantly caging me once he took the joystick in one hand and laid the other's index finger over of the buttons.
"Is this okay?" He whispered near my ear, chin resting atop of my shoulder.
"Yup." I popped the 'P', leaning back on him with folded arms in order to give him further confirmation.
"Okay so, you can't just go around like a headless chicken." He began to explain, expertise digits managing the controllers. "You wanna look where the hell these little guys are going before actually turning. Look—" He pointed at the bottom right corner of the screen. "See this little tunnels, you're gonna wanna look for them."
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Then... Well, then everything kinda started to go south." I explained my attentive friends.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"See?" The front of Eddie's right shoulder playfully bumped my shoulder blade. Even though it was now I who was playing the game, he had remained hovering over me; it was obviously for show, but I found it oddly comforting. "Not that complicated. Leftleftleft— shit."
"Ugh!" I slammed the machine, throwing my head back in frustration.
"Woah!" His words thrummed in his chest, and were quickly followed by an surprised chuckle. "Let's try another game before you smash this one, shall we?" Eddie joked, taking a featherlight hold of my hip before propelling us both away from the cabinet. "I think you're gonna like—"
"Hey, Y/n." Eddie fell awfully silent when a boy wearing the signature Hawkins High basketball team bomber cut through the crowd to stand in our way. "Is this creep bothering you?"
After giving the boy a bewildered look, a single breathy chuckle fell from my lips "Do I know you?"
The boy looked offended for a second. "I'm Patrick McKinney. We're neighbors." When I turned to check Eddie's face and I saw his head casted down, I knew it was time to get moving.
"Alright Patrick," clearing my throat, I tapped Eddie's hand, still hanging on my side, and proceeded to move the junior out of the way. "thanks for your concerns but I'm good."
"Did he give you... anything?" He inquired, way too loud for anyone's liking but his.
"I might just ask him to do so, 'cause you're kinda giving me a headache." I spat, hooking my arm under Eddie's and leading him to the Arcade's entrance.
"That's gonna get you in trouble." Eddie pointed out, tilting his chin down for me to hear his words.
"I hope so." Only once we were crossing the establishment's front door, I let go of Eddie. "I think that's enough for tonight, though."
"Yeah, me too." The metalhead, who had been so unusually taciturn since Patrick approached us, began to loosen up, coming back to his usual self. "Sooo... Did you have a good time?"
"Yeah!" I instantly replied, a beam tugging the corners of my mouth as we walked to his van. "It was a great 'first date'." I accompanied the two last words with quotation marks.
Eddie's face lit up with a proud grin, which soon turned into a grimace when someone called his name from somewhere on the sidewalk we had just left behind.
"Wait up, Munson!" Mike Lewenski appeared jogging into our line of vision, moving to stand face to face with Eddie. "You got anything?"
"Not today, man." The long haired boy responded in a careful tone, his brown eyes searching for our mean of transport over Lewenski's shoulder.
"Oh c'mon, I'm sure you got something." The senior insisted, stepping backwards instead of moving out of the way once me and Eddie resumed our walk.
It was only then that my presence seemed to dawn on him, dangerous eyes squinted at me with his chin tilted. "Y/I/n. How come you're out and about?"
"I felt like it." I simply muttered. Something about Lewenski had always made me uneasy; the less contact I had with him, the better.
"You cleaned up good, huh?" He commented, blatantly ogling me, which pushed me to lean closer to Eddie for some kind of safety. "Wait. Is this, like, a date or something?"
Silence.
"Damn! That's how desperate you are?" He sneered. "You could've asked me."
Eddie and I shared a brief half annoyed, half concerned glance. "Okay, man, move." My so-called date requested, his right hand traveling to the small of my back while the left one dug into his pocket for the van's keys. "I'm taking the lady home."
Mike did, indeed, move, but not as it had been requested; he had taken a step forward, nearly bumping into Eddie. Whatever fear I might have had was beginning to be substituted by irritation at the boy's behavior.
Apparently, his actions had a similar effect on Eddie; with an unintelligible string of curses falling from his lips, the metalhead used his left hand to take a fistful of Lewenski's jacket and shove him aside, making him stumble to the side.
We both silently agreed on taking off to the van as fast as we could without making it seem like we were running away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"okay, yeah, he didn't punch him," Lizzy started, almost disappointed. "But technically—"
"No, he did not punch him. Period." I emphasized the negative in my statement, raising a menacing index finger at my friend without stopping to look at her. "Stop talking about that."
"You think it's gonna give him trouble?" George's concerned voice was low; he didn't want anyone else to hear. "Y'know, we should check on him after lunch." He suggested, as if he was reading my thoughts.
"Yeah." I nodded in agreement, squeezing the books out of anxiety.
"Unless... you wanna go check on him now?"
"What are you two whispering about?" Linda, who had been left behind with Liz, scuttled to fall into step with us two. "Wanna share with the class?"
"Uhm—"
"Y/n wanted to check something." George jumped in before I could voice my concern. "Why don't you two go grab a seat?" He suggested, tugging my sleeve to walk past the cafeteria entrance. "We'll be right back!"
"You have any idea of where we're going?" I questioned, once we had put some distance between our confused friends.
"I'm... Looking for one of them..." George informed me, skimming the halls with watchful eyes. "The D&D club guys."
"Good call." I began mirroring George's actions once we turned a corner. It was difficult to recognize a face you never paid attention to, but with any luck, one of them would be wearing that weird shirt. "Maybe we should—"
Slam!
My head instinctively snapped in the loud hit's direction, searching for the originator of it, but George saw it first. "Y/n." He yanked my blouse, pointing at certain long-haired lanky boy dressed in black who was being pinned to a locker by none other than Tommy H.
"HEY!"
"Y/n wait—"
Managing to escape George's protective grasp, I made my way past the crowd gathering around the two seniors. My heart missed a beat when I began to catch on Tommy's words.
"—can't go punching good people around," he gave Eddie a firm shake, making his head hit the rusty brass again. "you fucking freak, you think you'd get away with it, huh?"
Eddie's eyes and mouth were shut, and I couldn't tell if he was trying to hold back and not hit the boy who had him by the collar, or if he was genuinely scared.
"Get off him!" I took a strong hold of the younger senior's arm and yanked him back so he would face me. "What the fuck's wrong with you, Hagan?!"
"And you!" Tommy pointed an accusing finger at me. "You were the bitch who was with him last Friday!"
"Watch your mouth, asshole!" Eddie yelled earning himself another slam against the lockers on Tommy's part, who's gaze stayed fixed on me.
"Little Miss Perfect's not perfect at all, huh? Hanging out with the freak," He taunted me. "Turns out she's just another easy slut!"
I didn't give my actions much thought before slapping Tommy across the face, making the whole hall go silent. "Shut up," I warned with a rage I didn't know I could feel. "or I'll shove my heel so far up your ass that you'll have to go through surgery to get it out."
"You are threatening me?" He retorted, pushing me back hard enough for me to stumble.
"Mr. Hagan!" Ms. Kelley, guided by George, struggled to get to us, but soon enough she was taking Tommy with her to the principal's office.
Just like the ruckus had started, it came to an end.
"Jesus fuck..." Eddie groaned, crouching to grab his bag, lying on the cold floor after being forcefully discarded and emptied on the hall.
"I'm so sorry." Taking a quick step to Eddie, I blurted out the very much needed apology before anything else could come to my mind.
"You know what that was about?" He questioned, looking up from the ground.
"Someone's spreading the rumor that you... punched Lewenski at the arcade." I explained, kneeling down and placing my books on the floor in order to help him put his things back into his backpack. "I'm really sorry, Eddie, I literally found out this morning."
"To be fair," once everything was back into his bag, his eyes locked with mines. "He's just coooonstantly looking for dumb reasons to come at me. Plus," with a grunt, he got back up again, pulling his bag with him. "You wanted rumors right?"
"Yeah, but not rumors that cause you problems." I clarified, picking up my books and taking the ringed hand Eddie was offering me to aid me stand up.
"Listen, Y/n," after taking a quick peek around us, Eddie threw the bag's strap over his shoulder and stepped closer, towering over me. "First off, I really don't care. And second, we got a deal and I'm committed, alright?"
"Alright." I whispered back, trying my best not to blush at the deliberate proximity.
"Speaking of which," he finally stepped back, letting me release a breath I didn't know I was holding. "It's your turn to hold up your side of the bargain." Doing a half turn, he reached out for me to intertwin my fingers with him before he started walking, which I did.
"We can meet right after class." I suggested, letting our hands swing as we walked. It felt oddly natural, which freaked me out a little bit. "Either at the bleachers or, I don't know, the library?"
"You know that picnic table that's in the middle of the woods?" He questioned, turning the corner in the cafeteria's direction.
"Uh... The one past the football field?" He gave me a nod. "Yeah, I know where that is."
"Okay then, I'll meet you there after last period." He slowed down once we crossed the entrance and, instead of letting go of my hand, he spun to face me and bent over to place a kiss on the back of my hand, making my tummy flutter. "Enjoy your lunch, m'lady."
I could only respond with a quiet 'you too' I doubted he was able to catch while he took off to the pariahs' table.
Half of the eyes in the cafeteria were focused on my frozen frame, but I barely registered it; Eddie's hand kiss had once again shut my senses down.
God, what the hell had I gotten myself into?

Cannon Dancin' In The Middle East
Tumblr media
If the Strider series represents a Japanese team making a blazing action game set in a Soviet futurescape, then Cannon Dancer is the same but for the Middle East.
Prevously unknown except to the handful of people who either touched the arcade cabinet or downloaded the ROM for MAME, Cannon Dancer flew under the radar for nearly 30 years until it got a surprise remaster earlier this year. I have the pleasure of reporting that Cannon Dancer's 2023 Switch port is just as batshit as the 1996 arcade original, and I'm glad that a wider audience can now experience the joy of an assassin in floopy trousers rampaging through the streets of future Dubai, kicking tigers in the face and battling giant goddesses for control over the planet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cannon Dancer is a spiritual successor to the original Strider, made by designer Kouichi Yotsui after he left Capcom and decided to channel the same energy that birthed Strider Hiryu for Mitchell Corporation. He did this despite the fact that arcade platforming action games were pretty much dead in '96, and as a result Cannon Dancer never did well financially. But I doubt that anyone who played this visual kaleidoscope back in the day forgot it. Cannon Dancer bursts with bright colors and killer sprite art, depicting some of the most vibrant levels I've ever seen.
It starts out in Agadan, a cyberpunk UAE-style metropolis on the Persian Gulf, and continues to a temple, a sprawing desert, the Indian Ocean, some forest near Aleppo, Prague, and a weird final level that may or may not take place in the Earth's upper hemisphere, except that it's red and nightmarish instead of freezing cold. Throughout all these arenas, Cannon Dancer's protagonist, a dude named Kirin, exquisitely beats ass by kicking things until they explode and getting powerups that shoot after-images of himself across the screen. How do you know you've gotten a power up? The color of Kirin's pants change. It's great stuff.
Visually, I've appreciated Cannon Dancer's aesthetic ever since I first glimpsed it in emulated screenshots. Just as the Strider series' unusual penchant for Soviet-era futurism feels dated yet novel at the same time, Cannon Dancer's depiction of Western Asia populated by robots, techno troopers, oil rig mechs and pyamids rising above skyscapes is rad. It's rare to get a Japanese game (or any game from the '90s and 2000s, really) that channels the Middle East in a way that isn't just an Arabian Nights retread or some drab, browish setting for world militaries to make a mess in. While I wouldn't exactly call Cannon Dancer's "representation" good, it's at least fun and memorable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One missed opportunity is that Kirin doesn't appear to be Middle Eastern himself, despite the English version giving him the Turkish name "Osman." (In fact, Cannon Dancer was released outside of Japan as Osman, and the new re-release generously goes by the title Cannon Dancer Osman. But let's be real, Cannon Dancer is 100% the better name.) Instead, he seems to be your usual Japanese action game badass who serves on Teki, a mercenary squad. He takes orders from Jack Layzon, the attorney general of the WORLD who desses like a 1930s gangster, because Cannon Dancer's vision of the future is wild. After a routine mission to take down cultists goes haywire, Kirin is left in the desert to rot and forced to seek revenge on his old Teki comrades and Mr. Layzon. Along the way, the deity Abdullah enslaves him as her personal avatar of justice...until Kirin breaks free and goes to beat the crud out of her as well, presumably becoming a deity himself by the end of the game.
This is my own interpretation of the plot as gathered from the various Cannon Dancer entries on the Strider wiki, by the way. There is a surprising amount of story bubbling around the edges of this game, but it's all stuff cobbled together from interviews or magazine articles. There are actual cutscenes, sure, but they feel like the work of a development team tasked to create a game based on an 80-episode 1995 anime about a cyber ninja in Baghdad that nobody else watched. Obviously, most Japanese games in the '90s had something lost in translation. But Cannon Dancer takes it to a new level, relishing in its incomprehensible nature yet offering the curious a treasure trove of lore if they bother to dig around online. It reminds me of the underrated Strider NES game, which was also baffling yet at least had a manga to fill in the gaps, and I respect it for that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As far as its status as a Strider spiritual successor goes, I'd say that I actually prefer Cannon Dancer over both Strider 2 and Double Helix's 2014 Strider remix. Those are decent games held back by poor pacing, whereas Cannon Dancer is just as tight as the original 1989 Strider, if not more so thanks to the additional years that Kouichi Yotsui and his team had to improve on gameplay mechanics. And while you could dismiss Cannon Dancer as too much of a clone to win such praise, as some did in the years leading up to its re-release, I think there's more room out there for mashups which can best be described as "neon-drenched Dubai nightlife meets Jojo's Bizarre Adventure." Cannon Dancer is a garish Middle Eastern fever dream, and the world is better off for its existence.

ya’ll remember that Halo ‘Outpost Discovery” promotional thing? it sounds like it was pretty cool, but I read up on it on the halopedia and like,
there were two walk-around characters, Hazel-A302 and Owen-B096, the brown and blue spartans who interacted with kids and posed for photos and stuff, basically mascots for the installation?
according to the Reach-era costume armour and the lore, apparently they were legitimate Spartan-IIIs. You know, the war-orphan child soldiers who were rapidly trained and sent out on what were basically suicide missions to act as an emergency buffer against larger Covenant invasions?
I’m amazed at that detail because
the UNSC canonically had traumatized veterans interact with families in a pseudo-theme park setting before returning them to active duty at the start of the Created Conflict
Owen actively fought alongside a literal child-soldier militia on Meridian which probably made interacting with non-combatant children weird
Hazel was a Headhunter, one of those high-stakes psychopaths who infiltrate alien bases with no electronics, shields, or support, and is now doing photo ops with people on vacation in like, LA.
If they were Spartan-IVs it wouldn’t be so weird, because that’s just like, the super-boot boy usmc showing up at a job fair today, but these characters were active-duty black-ops super-soldiers, their very existence a guarded secret, status mythical, at the tip of the spear against an existential threat.
Oh and also the AI tour guide at the outpost, Gabriela, was a military-grade Smart AI - brain-copied from a corpse - and was assigned to cataloguing the entirety of recorded human history in the event that the Covenant won the war and humanity was rendered extinct. ONI itself decided that her time would be better spent afterwards giving tours and promoting megabloks; before being isolated and exfiltrated at the Subjugation of Earth along with other HIGHCOM AI and both Admirals Serin-019 Osman and Lord Terrence Hood to keep all present from being compromised by Cortana, with her fate currently up in the air on whether she was allowed by Osman to join Cortana, stayed with the UNSC, or was destroyed.
That’s some heavy in-lore importance given to characters for what’s basically an arcade with some exhibits and walking tours. I kinda love it!

‘Knights of the Rogue Dungeon’, Plus Today’s Other New Releases and the Latest Sales – TouchArcade
Tumblr media
Hiya mild readers, and welcome to the 12 months 2024. In as we speak’s thrilling New Yr’s Day version of the SwitchArcade Spherical-Up, we now have… not a complete lot. However I had some spare time, and any trash I take out as we speak is trash I don’t must take out tomorrow. We do have one respectable recreation to take a look at as we speak, and we’re going to just do that. The Bin Bunch has lots to supply as we speak, as you would possibly count on. We even have some respectable gross sales to take a look at, and that’s one of many causes I made a decision to place fingers to the keyboard as we speak. Let’s get to it! New Releases Knights of the Rogue Dungeon ($9.99)
Tumblr media
This recreation comes from Atooi, who you would possibly know because the developer of Mutant Mudds and Xeodrifter. Extra related to this recreation, it is usually the developer of Totes the Goat, a Q*Bert homage that provided respectable arcade motion. Knights of the Rogue Dungeon appears to be like quite a bit like that recreation, with the dungeons taking the type of Q*Bert-style pyramids. It's important to “paint" all the block surfaces by stepping on them, with combos incomes you armor upgrades that aid you defeat the enemies that litter every stage. There are completely different characters to make use of, six dungeons to discover, and quite a few upgrades to earn. If you happen to loved Totes the Goat or are simply searching for one other recreation with obscure similarities to Q*Bert, you would possibly wish to look into this. The Bin Bunch Ski Simulator: Winter Sports activities ($9.99)
Tumblr media
MisBloody ($9.99)
Tumblr media
Fantasy Blacksmith Store Simulator ($7.99)
Tumblr media
Warzone Chronicles: Digital Warfare Shooter ($11.99)
Tumblr media
Gross sales (North American eShop, US Costs) We see Taito/ININ gross sales pretty continuously, however there are just a few video games right here that I wish to name some consideration to. Particularly, the Darius Cozmic Collections are at new low costs. At their regular costs these are a bit powerful for lots of oldsters to swallow, however now you can successfully get the total set for a mixed whole of simply over thirty bucks. If you happen to’re feeling fancy, you possibly can seize G-Darius and Dariusburst to spherical out your Darius set and get away with a complete value not far off from Cozmic Assortment Console‘s common value. Different attention-grabbing gross sales: Yggdra Union with its greatest value since launch, No Man’s Sky matching its lowest, and Cannon Dancer being on the Arcade Archives-adjacent value it in all probability ought to have launched at. Osman Cannon Dancer Review (PlayStation 5)
Tumblr media
 Osman Cannon Dancer Review, we play an Action Jump & Run set in a dystopian late 21st century, in which the world is under the control of a single federal government. One day, a new threat known as “Abdullah the Slaver” – an evil sorceress who wants to take control of the world – appears, causing widespread terror and panic. This fear incites the abandonment of all economic activity and corruption in the government, which now undermines the foundations of society itself. Judicial Affairs Director, Jack Layzon, fears the worst and summons a lone assassin.

Osman Cannon Dancer Review Pros:
- Classics graphics. - 103.7MB download size. - Platinum trophy. - Two games in one - Osman and Canon Dancer. - Controller settings - can rebind controls, auto grab ledges, and vibration. - Graphics settings - display (4:3 DAR/perfect/perfect 1X/fullscreen), scale filter (soft/crispy/none), and wallpaper art including brightness and saturation sliders. - CRT shader - mask type, mask intensity, scanline intensity, sharpness, curvature, trini curve, corner round, and CRT gamma. - Enhancements - double jump, Invincible jump, Invincible slide, Invincible attack, and auto-attack. - Cheats - Invincible, time freeze, unlimited fatal attacks, unlimited HP, and full power. - Canon dancer and Osman both have two modes - standard and challenge. - Osman gives a very basic tutorial opening screen. - Challenge mode is the default original way to play except you can have two enhancements. - The standard mode supports rewind/save states/cheats/enhancements. - Side scroller beat-em up gameplay. - Classic arcade presentation. - Big boss encounters. - Brilliant Chiptune soundtrack. - Crazy enemy types. - Some of the best over-the-top animations flips, and dives I've not seen the likes of since I mixed Strider and shrooms together on one lonely Sunday. - Continue (after a game over) right where you died. - Difficult. - Fatal attacks can be earned and they deal huge damage when you fly a kick around the screen. - Cool little things like how you almost create clones of yourself repeating your actions. - Over-the-top explosions just like Super Contra. - Collect power-ups and health. - Healthbar system. - Simple controls. - Canon Dancer in-game cutscenes are u touched complete with the original Japanese text. - You can quit a game and return to the game select screen. - Climb the platforms. - Breakable objects. - Excellent nostalgia trip.
Tumblr media
Osman Cannon Dancer Review Cons: - You can only earn trophies in the challenge mode. - No manuals or tutorials outside of the basic one in Osman. - You don't get any history on the games and the versions selected. - No way to save at all in the challenge get mode. - Difficult. - Same game Options for graphics as all the others. - Wallpaper choices are slim. Cannon Dancer Osman - Not so random review - Vol.3
Format: PlayStation 4 (Reviewed) Also on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox One & Xbox Series X/S Publisher: United Games Entertainment (ININ Games / Strictly Limited Games) Developer: Mitchell Corporation (Port by Ratalaika Games S.L.) Release year: 2023 (1996 Original Arcade Release) Genre: Platformer Official Website: https://www.iningames.com/games/cannon-dancer-en
Randomised Gaming reviewed the PlayStation 4 digital download version of Cannon Dancer, the code was provided to us by PR Hound to cover the game.
Over the last few years we've had a real renaissance in older games from the 80s, 90s and 00s getting long overdue re-releases. Mitchell Corporation was one such company whose games have largely remained lost to time, best remembered for the PANG series of games they did with Capcom. In 1996 the designer of the Capcom arcade platformer Strider, Kouichi “Isuke” Yotsui decided it was time to make a sequel to the game and so set about at Mitchell to make his version of Strider 2.
Tumblr media
With Capcom owning the rights to Strider, there had to be a few changes, but aside from the look of the hero and the name of the game. This really is a true sequel to Strider in all but name. Unfortunately this was a 2D game released in 1996 when 3D was becoming all the rage in arcades and that's not mentioning the fact its 2D visuals look very dated compared to rival arcade games like Marvel Super Heroes and Metal Slug which came out around the same time period.
Cannon Dancer as it was called in Japan and Osman in the rest of the world, didn't do that well. Selling okay in Japan and flopping overseas, the arcade is rare to say the least and to date I have never seen the raw PCB board in action. For most people emulators like MAME are most likely the place where they played this first, which is true of myself.
Tumblr media
I always had a soft spot for Capcom's Strider even if the game was somewhat messy in places. So finally in 2023 United Games Entertainment have teamed up once again with Ratalaika Games to bring you a near perfect version of Cannon Dancer and its first ever home release. I say near perfect as Ratalaika Games have made an error in not allowing users to access the game's dipswitch / options menu at present hidden in the service test mode . Which massively reduces the replay value of the game as it means you can't set the difficulty, change the number of lives, set the size of your starting life bar or change the extend settings or even turn the gore on or off. Certain enemy attack moves only appear on the harder settings as well.
That major issue over, which hopefully United Games Entertainment and Ratalaika Games will patch fairly quickly in the future and I'll be sure to update this review as and when they do, if they do. Is the only issue I really have with the port as the emulation here is the best to date of the game.
Tumblr media
The missing options as shown in the arcade's service test mode via MAME.
As you would expect from former Capcom staff Cannon Dancer is a superbly crafted action platformer, if somewhat unforgiving. The first few times you play Cannon Dancer you will lose a credit on the first stage and even more on the later stages. It does take awhile to learn the stage layout and design, but once you spend some time practising you can really master each stage and your opponents. The starting level of difficulty certainly would have put off arcade players in the 90s, many players would have likely turned their back on it after one go, but give it a chance and there is a true gem here.
Osman kicks and climbs his way through each stage and has a decent selection of moves in his arsenal, even if the air suplex, rolling throw and running from slide moves aren't detailed in the game and a moves list would have been very welcome. There's also the super bomb attack which is limited to 3 uses per life and acts a a screen clearing move and deal heavy damage to bosses.
Tumblr media
Gameplay wise the controls are spot on with Osman using his kicks to attack. Each time you grab a power up orb you get a shadow Osman that will appear and remain in place for a few seconds. Up to a maximum of four with the last upgrade also giving you a kick limited super long range kick that deals out heavy damage. What makes this game tough is any damage you take, reduces your attack by one level and the super kick only lasts for 20 kick attacks, this limit increases each time you collect the super kick, so long as you don't ever take damage.
The 2D pixel visuals are first class, but they look more on par with arcade games from 1993 not 1996. Each stage has a very different visual theme and look. The city feel of the first stage, which clearly homages Strider is very different to the sunken desert of stage three and the submarine of the sea on the forth. The bosses are also a vibrant cast of characters, from machines made of trash and metals, a flaming man, huge monsters, rival assassins and a dark goddess that wants to enslave the world.
Tumblr media
The plot is just bonkers and doesn't make much sense, most of the English text in Osman is best described as Engrish at best and a better translation of the text would have been welcome. Not that the plot in the game matters, as you are trying to take down all the enemies around you. The only real average area of the game is the music and sound effects, which don't really standout from the crowd.
This home port comes with both revisions of the arcade that's Cannon Dancer and Osman. It also features a standard mode, which lets you play with any number of all new extras and bonus features turned on or off, to help make the game easier. These extras included a much needed double jump, various invulnerable moves and attacks along with auto fire. Many of them help give Cannon Dancer a new lease of life and improve the quality of the game.
Tumblr media
Sadly one extra I would have liked to have seen, would have been to allow the player to remain in the final super kick upgrade state until they take a hit, as the fact it runs out so quickly after you obtain it, is really annoying. Also the fact the super attack (Bomb) uses don't reset after you clear a stage is another downer and one a perk to address this issue would have been most welcome also.
Adding to the gameplay is the new challenge mode, which allows players to take up to two of the extra perks to try and beat the game with and unlock the included trophies and achievements. As the game will take you to the cleaner the first time you play it you will have to get in some practice in order to overcome slaver and her forces. It took me a good couple of hours of practise and I ended up using the invulnerable attack and 4 credits perk to beat the game. The challenge mode adds in a lot of fun and the perks help to make it a far better game. Common place features like rewind and save state which you expect with these types of modern emulation releases are also included.
Tumblr media
While overall the game is very well designed there are a few bits that are just insanely hard. The sudden introduction of reset points on the last stage is one. Forcing you to restart various boss fights on death results in a few frustrating moments and one that will cause you just to spam your super attack lots. While I can clear the last stage without issue now, I still end up using multiple lives clearing the last five bosses back to back. The fake Osman fight is very hard to avoid damage on. As are the three assassins together as Cannon's robot makes it impossible in some parts to avoid hits from the other two, making that fight more luck than skill.
Finally the lack of bonus content is somewhat disappointing, there isn't anything like an art gallery, sprite viewers, moves list or sound test in sight. Considering I was able to find the original arcade flyers and instruction manual detailing all the moves on the internet, it would have been nice to see this content included in this release.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arcade flyer and instructions taken from the arcade-museum and arcade flyers websites.
In the end Cannon Dancer is a challenging cult arcade game from 1996 that perfectly captures the spirit and gameplay of its predecessor. This is everything you would expect from an arcade title developed by a seasoned veteran of the industry. This version is only hampered by the lack of extra content and the missing dipswitch options, which needs patching in. The emulation has improvements over what is seen in MAME right now, making this the best way to play the game.
youtube
Pros + First home release since 1996 + Superb 90s arcade gameplay + Responsive and tight controls + Great stage design and enemy visuals + Strider 2 in all bar name
Cons - Dipswitches are all missing - No extra content, arcade flyers, sound test, moves list, etc.. - Music and audio is very average

Retro Arcade Rarity “Cannon Dancer” Coming to Consoles on 13 April | #retrogaming #PlayStation #Xbox #retrogames #NintendoSwitch
ININ Games recently announced that Cannon Dancer (known as OSman in the West) is releasing both digitally and physically for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5 on 13 April 2023. The Xbox version will receive a digital-only release. A side-scrolling action game in the vein of Shadow Dancer and Strider, Mitchell Corporation’s Cannon Dancer was certainly a rarity upon its arcade release in 1996. This new…

Potion Permit First Time Character Meeting
Tumblr media
Welcome to our Potion Permit First Time Character Meeting Timetable guide. For meeting everyone, harvesting all the forest harvest points, and doing both side jobs when you can talk to the townsfolk. We know that there are people who have a hard time finishing the Potion Permit game. If you are one of those who find it difficult to finish the game, let's take you to our Potion Permit guide. #PotionPermit
Potion Permit First Time Character Meeting Timetable
So on that first Thursday, Myer gives you the quest to meet 10 of the townspeople, but you may want to just meet everyone that day to make it easier to find them with your dog later. I do have the Quality of Life mod installed from NexusMods to increase player speed to make this a lot easier and allow me to harvest in the forest on the side. This guide also assumes you have all the town warps activated as well. This is the rough timetable that I found to get as many characters at once as possible. You can obviously find some of the characters in various other locations, but I didn't search for them outside of these group spots for efficiency. I do include doing the side jobs as well as progressing quests just on this first Thursday. As you meet the townsflok, it should trigger scenes as well. Businesses' Hours of Operation - Townhall 8-15, except Sunday - Police Station 8-22 - Church 8-17, except Wednesday - Bathhouse 9-18, except Thursday - Hearts and Spark 10-18, except Friday - Silky Stitch Tailors 11-17, except Sunday - Farmhouse 7-17, except Monday - Primrose 10-18, except Saturday - Bulk and Build 8-15, except Tuesday - Lazy Bowl Tavern 10-24, except Monday - Arcade 10-24, except Monday Timetable and Locations - Myer and Xiao - in Town Hall (0610ish) - Harvest til 7, then warp to Beach - Hannah, Leano, Victor - on Beach (around 7) - Kipps and Ottmar - outside Primrose (around 7) - Harvest til 8, then warp to Town Square - Derrek and Dean - near Town square warp (around 8) - Garret, Lucke, Mercy, and Laura - Inside Farmhouse (around 8) - Russo, Helene, Dev, and Rue - outside Townhall (around 830) - Cassandra, Osman, Yorn, and Martha - outside Lazy Bowl (around 830) - Olive - in front of Townhall (around 9) - Soceilla - in Church (around 930) - Opalheart and Runeheart - in Hearts and Sparks (around 10) - Reyner and Olive - in Bulk and Build (around 10) - Do church side job, then warp to forest - Bubbles and Forrest -outside their booth (around 12) - Matheo - outside his house (around 12) - Warp to forest and trigger landslide quest, then warp near Lazy Bowl and buy steak x2 for energy - Zeke - near police station (around 13) - Nova - park (around 13) - Mariele - in tailor (around 14) - Warp to Beach and continue/complete landslide quest. - Harvest til just before 22, then warp near Police Station and do side job> - Dan - behind Lazy Bowl (around 24) Read the full article
