Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: #25: The Northman (dir. Robert Eggers)

This film based on the Scandinavian legend of Amleth, which is the story that inspired Shakespeare to write Hamlet, is a bit of a departure for director Robert Eggers. His previous two films, The Witch and The Lighthouse, are heavy on the abstract, with The Lighthouse especially leaning heavily into imagery over storytelling. That's definitely not a knock on those films, I'm a fan of both, but Northman definitely felt like something more akin to straightforward storytelling. Eggers manages to slip in sequences of his signature style, and there's still tons of metaphor playing around within the walls of this story, and that way that is played off of some of the greatest cinematography of last year, culminating in an absolutely gorgeously shot climactic battle that had my jaw firmly on the floor. If you can handle the gorier bits of this, then it is well-worth the watch and further cements Eggers, Alexander Skarsgård and Anya Taylor-Joy as talents to follow. The Northman (2022, dir. Robert Eggers) - review by Rookie-Critic

The Northman was a very good balance of imagery and metaphor with good, consistent storytelling. Nothing ever felt gratuitous or over-the-top, which is saying something considering the subject matter. It maybe can slip into that male-power-fantasy realm just a tiny bit, and the romance between Alexander Skarsgård and Anya Taylor-Joy's characters feels a tad rushed (a problem I have with the romantic through lines in a lot of movies), but for the most part the style and entertainment value of the movie keep things on track. I went into this one with slight hesitation, but I gotta say I was very, very impressed. The cinematography is wonderful, the acting superb from all parties, and the story was gripping and thought provoking, making you question what moral side we are on and who exactly we should be rooting for? If you can handle some gore/violence, give this one a go. Probably Eggers' best work so far.

Score: 9/10
