The Oriental Lilies have started to bloom in my garden here in Austin, Texas! I am growing them for the first time and I am smitten by their beauty. It is difficult to get large and showy blooms in our hot and humid climate but the Oriental Lilies deliver! They were super easy to grow and I intend to plant more next year! Unfortunately, I can’t share the name of the variety, since this one should have been pink but is clearly a mislabeled one! I love it anyway, though! Please tell me, are you growing Oriental Lilies as well? What is your experience with them? Any particularly beautiful varieties that you would recommend? Wishing you a great day! #organicgardendreams #orientallily #orientallilies #whiteorientallily #flowerphotography #flower #flowers #whiteflower #whiteflowers #organicgardening #inmygarden #inmygardentoday #innygardennow #flowersofinstagram #floweroftheday #organicgardener #austingardener #centraltexasgardener #austingarden #cottagegarden #zone8b #cottagegardenflowers #austingarden #gardening #gardeningintexas #cottagegardens #zone8bgarden #zone8bgardener #bloom #blooms (at Austin, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdvYf8TODoS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The most common mistake we see in instagram gardens is overcrowding of plants. Can some plants do just fine this way? Absolutely and yet squash won’t . Planting squash too closely is a recipe for disaster. Powdery mildew, blossom end rot, squash bug and vine borer paradise, soil depletion….the list goes on. Rotation: Take a note from our ancestors, history, and our own gardens plant in patches not rows. This makes rotation easier and proper rotation aids in replenishing of the soil. You know we always speak on interplanting herbs as a pest control, squash can especially benefit from the ones mentioned here. Powdery mildew is your nemesis if you’ve planted too close together especially 😵‍💫 but you can face it head on with a tbsp of baking soda, tbsp of Castile soap, and gallon of water. Mix these together and spray on your squash to kick powdery mildews butt across the season. Squash are heavy feeders- they benefit from following nitrogen fixing legumes along with the leafy greens. Got more questions? Drop them in the comments. Save this for later! . .. . . . . . . . #gardening #homegrowntomatoes #tomatoplant #tomatoes #growagarden #communitygarden #communitygardens #communitygardening #growingsquash #naturalpestdeterrent #organicgarden #organicgardener #organicgardening #squash #squashblossom #backyardgardener #gardenerslife #gardenersofinstagram #heirloomseeds #heirloomtomatoes #heirloomtomato #growingtomatoes #growingtomatoesfromseeds #seedlings #gardenpro (at In The Garden) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp7pwd_uLMZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A Beautiful Day working in the #allotement Another ton bag I filled while my partner began making the raised beds, not quite finished today. Our foxy friend likes to keep watch to see what we are up too. Glad I’ve got the help of my partner Elandro, it’s hard work however so rewarding. This week we plan to have the Shed/summer house up so we can sit and watch the sunset for a bit while we are there. #organic #organicgardening #organicgardener #allotmentlife #livinginharmonywithnature https://www.instagram.com/p/CeHkodUK7Qz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Made some nettle tea fertilizer today 🍵
Tumblr media
I gathered some nettles today in the garden, chopped them up and submerged them in some rain water. I put the bucket on the sun. Now I just have to wait for for a few weeks!
Nettle has a lot of super important nutrients, this tea will make a great fertilizer. If you also want to try this out please note that when the tea is ready, you have to dilute it. Dilute 1 part tea with 10 part water. Water your plants with it, leafy greens will love it! But don’t use it on onion plants or root vegetables. They don’t like it much.

This gardening classic was first published in 1975, and now a second generation of gardeners who prefer pest-resistant planning to chemicals will find a place for it on the shelves. Not only does it tell what to plant with what, but also how to use herbal sprays to control insects, what wild plants to encourage in the garden, how to grow fruit and nut trees, how to start small plots or window-box gardens, and much more. It's one of the most practical books around for any gardener of edibles, no matter how serious or casual!

Welcome June! It has been super hot the last week here in Austin, Texas, and very few of the plants in my garden are looking good right now. One of the exceptions is Echinacea purpurea ‚PowWow’. This beautiful white coneflower seems to love the heat and is relatively drought and humidity tolerant. So it is an ideal plant for Central Texas. It Is also supposed to attract butterflies and hummingbirds even though I have to say I haven’t seen neither feasting on my plant. I have often complained on my Instagram account about how hard it is to garden here in Austin. And I do believe everyone who is gardening in this area will attest to that. But I have decided to try to find plants that like to live in the conditions that my garden has to offer and that I love. That will make my life as an organic gardener much easier and also will probably make for a much more satisfying gardening experience. Coneflowers are definitively belonging in this plant category. Anther good thing is that they also fit into my desired cottage garden style and there are many different varieties out there. So one thing is for certain, I will go on the hunt to find some other echinacea varieties in the near future! Are you also garden in a challenging climate? What is a plant that naturally thrives your area? #organicgardendreams #echinacea #echinsceapurpurea #echinaceapowwow #powwow #whiteechinacea #echinaceaflower #echinaceaflowers #inmygardentoday #inmygarden #inmygardennow #austingardener #austingarden #centraltexasgardener #cottagegarden #cottagegardens #cottagegardenstyle #organicgardening #organicgardener #gardening #whiteflowers #whiteflowers #cottagegardening #fortheloveofgardening #perennial #droughttolerant #heattolerant #droughttoletantplants #coneflower #coneflowers (at Austin, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeR89K-OVsR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

These 2 fruits, cantaloupe & watermelon went bad or was going bad due to accidentally cutting & cutting the vines back due to powdery mildew! Don't do what I did lol! Anyhoo... since these would go bad or has gone bad I wanted to cut them open to see what it looks like inside @ this stage! The aroma is is phenomenal... I have some more that I am growing right now from Spring & I am keeping the seeds from the cantaloupe also! The seeds in the watermelon aren't yet fertile so unable to keep those for anything... but I have more green manure for my compost! Always remember not much gets water when you have a garden... most can be used in compost of course unless it's diseased! #watermelon #canteloupe #fruit #plants #plant #plantmom #homegrownfruit #homegrown #veggies #organic #organicgardening #organicgarden #organicgardener #organicfood #food #growyourownfood #growingyourownfood #grow #growing #homegrownveggies #seeds #seed #seedlings # (at Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/Chm_AuqLLM7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
