It’s Election Day! In the Vintage Kitchen that means Cake Day! In 2018, over on the blog we wrote a post about the history of Election Cake and how it was the food of choice on voting day in the 1700s. Back then it was a boozy holiday, full of ale, camaraderie and community support that celebrated the country’s heritage and all its inhabitants. Women of course couldn’t vote then, but they did have the important role of making the prized election cake which everyone enjoyed. That task, made by the women of New England, was an entire town-wide endeavor and an important part of the political atmosphere. Read more about story of this 1700s era sweet treat on the blog. And then cast your vote. Should it really be called a cake if it’s actually more like a bread?! . . . . #cake #electionday #colonialhistory #electioncake #vintagecakes #oldrecipes https://www.instagram.com/p/CktI1p_ug5M/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

If you’re going to buy cans of baked beans, may as well pick up pre-made beef stock instead of bouillon cubes. And use up the whole package of bacon while you're at it.

✍️🏽 Handwritten Crescent Tart Recipe ✍️🏽 Thankfully, I inherited my moms hand written recipes! I remember the day I received them in the mail...I was like a kid at Christmastime. I couldn't flip through them fast enough. The anticipation of what I was going to see written next was almost too much to handle. Reading what she wrote and knowing that I was holding the paper that she once touched made not only my mouth smile, but my heart too! Here is a recipe for crescent tarts that she had written on a scratch piece of paper... Crescent tarts 20-25 min 350* 1 pkg crescent rolls 1 8 oz pk cream cheese 1 egg yolk 1/4 c sugar 1 t. vanilla Mix all ingredients. Separate rolls. Put teasp of filling in each roll and fold together. #deannasrecipebox #foodwriterdeanna #foodwriter #recipeoftheday #family #familyrecipe #crescentrolls #easyrecipe #tarts #creamcheese #handwritten #oldrecipes https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce1DJMIujBG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Tonight's shitty food porn!
I decided to use that leftover curried cabbage to make some cabbage noodles. That's with the Garofalo GF mafalda corta again. I threw some frozen peas in for the last few minutes of noodle cooking, mainly for the extra color and texture variety.
I am also just eating my supper out of the bowl that I used to reheat the cabbage in the microwave. Saves washing something extra, and I like those bowls.
On the side: some easy impromptu baked dijon chicken that came up on r/OldRecipes earlier today. We still have a surplus of frozen chicken breasts, and that didn't sound like a half-bad way to use a few up. The person trying to find that recipe also mentioned their family serving it with curried rice, and I figured the chicken might also go OK with the curried haluski conglomeration I already had planned.
(A few tweaks to the mustard sauce, due to the person I am: Besides putting some herb salt all over the chicken before saucing it up, for the glaze I added a little thyme and garlic salt besides the rosemary that calls for, and actually subbed in this lemon-flavored mayonnaise we have for the oil and lemon juice. It is mostly slightly tart oil anyway, and I figured the tablespoon of lemon juice would just be too much on top of all that mustard sourness. I've also made a somewhat similar mustard sauce to bake on chicken before where I was skeptical about it actually calling for mayo, but that turned out great. This particular lemony mayo is much better to my taste as something to add a little into other things, than just to eat on a sandwich or something. Seemed like a decent way to use some of that up!)
It all did turn out pretty satisfying, btw. And not a terrible combo, for the amount of work involved.

Mocha marble cake with chocolate buttercream icing. Frosting is good, but cake is dry and labor intensive. The '60s were a weird time for recipes. Not as weird as the '70s, but definitely required way too much use of the hand mixer. #cake #oldrecipes #chocolatecake #bakingfromscratch #bakingfail #housewifery (at North Las Vegas, Nevada) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAeFoltnit9/?igshid=19cjuxcmzi80a

Over on the blog tonight, you’ll find a vintage recipe for macaroni and cheese that comes from the California kitchen of my Aunt Patti. It’s a recipe that has circulated around my family since the 1960s and contains a couple of unique ingredients not often found in this favorite comfort food. Stop by for a peek and a few stories about the history of this beloved dish and the lady who made it:) . . . . . #macaroniandcheese #familyrecipes #foodhistory #comfortfoods #oldrecipes #vintagekitchen #auntylove #familylove❤️ https://www.instagram.com/p/CY2wFoZsafv/?utm_medium=tumblr

About the only useful information in this is the advice to season your meat, wrap it in foil, and stash it near a fire for a bit. Also note that a large chunk of meat will take a long time to cook. There are whole cooking shows about barbecue that are better than this. Go forth, young chef, nd fine them.

Baking tarts have always been a favorite of mine. These ones were made with the richest pâte sucrée (3 egg yolks!), filled with a soft almond and chocolate sponge and topped with chocolate ganache. They’re buttery and light, not too sweet, not too fancy, can be dressed up as a dessert, but stand alone perfectly as well . . . #backtobaking #classicbaking #bakingtarts #chocolatedesserts #oldrecipes #vscofood #recipetesting https://www.instagram.com/p/CNo4fCYsMKa/?igshid=1uhgcrsrb187f

HAPPY NATIONAL CHUTNEY DAY In the frame: RIPE BANANA PEEL CHUTNEY 24th September is celebrated as the National Chutney day and is rightly so as all of us relate to it so much. A creation from India; the word deriving from the word Chātnā which means to lick, whose recipes are shared and made popular by the Romans and Britishers who took this recipe and made into companies like Crosse & Blackwell in 1700s Major Grey’s in 1800s. I’m sure we all have our own special stories revolving around this sweet and savoury condiment. Be it the memory with our mothers making them to accompany it with the parathas in our tiffin box , grandmas and great grandmas making different chutneys for us when we visit them during yearly vacation in summers or winters. And one instance which is etched in my memory, during my school days, after the day was over, I use to hop out of the gates to this Street trolly selling different kinds of Chutneys, some sweet, some spicy and some sweet and tangy. I use to buy some which hardly costed me two rupees but it worth a great deal. That was my daily ritual while coming back home. Today I’m sharing the recipe which my mom shared with me recollecting the memory with her grandmother (my great grandmother) during her school days. Recipe: Ripe banana peel, jaggery, tamarind pulp, salt, cumin seeds, garlic and green chillies, made to a paste on grindstone(Sil Batta) together. #chutney #nationalchutneyday #chutneymemories #oldrecipes #tradionalrecipes #indiancondiment #odiafood #odiarecipe #indiancooking (at RBD Stillwaters) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFhhopbFjs5/?igshid=qtthi4qj889y
