this has got to be the best series i have ever read.

The Locked Tomb Series (art credit: Tommy Arnold)
like it is SO good, when i first heard of it i was expecting something much different. not bad by any means, but not half as good. the writing is so creative and sharp but incredibly well thought and profound at the same time. Cannot wait for the fourth book.
(THE ART IS FUCKING GORGEOUS TOO! the cover for the second book is the reason i bought the first, little did i know i was in for the best series of my life.)

Imagine all of this taking place in perfect silence, the only sounds picked up by the microphones being the chafing of their trunks, their groans, moans and heavy breathing.

I personally have not stopped thinking about the moment when he looks away from Nigel; the tiny pause and looking straight ahead before he remembers he has a match to get back to.
That’s a man who just got transported back in time.

She did not shrink back, though the pupils of her eyes dilated. Was it the wildest thing in the world which happened to her—or was it not? Without warning—the sudden rush of a thought, immense and strange, swept over her body and soul and possessed her—so possessed her that it changed her pallor to white flame. It was actually Anstruthers who shrank back a shade because, for the moment, she looked so near unearthly.
“I am not afraid of you,” she said, in a clear, unshaken voice. “I am not afraid. Something is near me which will stand between us—something which DIED to-day.”

alex forbes,
the year is 2009 and he walks into some sort of public function on Halloween. he wanders around the trivial arrangement, scanning faces and searching for anything that might pique his interest. the skull makeup is what catches his eye at first, a symbol he’d trained himself to look for and take comfort in. there should’ve been no good reason that a painted face was holding his attention for as long as it was, there were countless skeletal costumes running around, yet somehow this stranger was keeping him captive. maybe it was the well tailored suit (serving as a lack of overall costume) that paired plainly with this man’s gothic face-paint, maybe it was hour of night, or maybe it was the fact that this stranger wasn’t a stranger at all. the longer alex looks, he begins to see, a now grown man; who looks suspiciously like the boy he shot in the face three years ago. it’s hard to tell with all of that makeup, but a familiar whisper re-inhabits the back of his brain and he knows his doom for certain, the boy man is none other than the once brilliant and corrupt young student, nigel colbie.

Nigel Colbie is Alex Forbes’ Beloved Maraclea (you can't convince me otherwise)
Let's compare the scene where Susan's dead body is discovered with Nigel's death scene. Susan was found naked, horribly dissected, in a gruesome setting. Alex's reaction to seeing Susan's body was simply one of surprise - he did not expect Nigel to bring him to see Susan (to turn her into Maraclea). He then felt sadness, but it was a relatively straightforward expression. He couldn't bear to look any longer.
Tumblr media
This sadness pales in comparison to Alex's demeanor when he cradles Nigel's lifeless body in the rain. He gazes up at the sky as if beseeching the gods for something, looking at Nigel with affectionate eyes that he had never shown when Nigel was alive. His hands gently stroke Nigel's motionless upper body, devoid of pulse or heartbeat. This signifies the loss of a part of Alex's soul. As for Nigel, although he was shot in the head, the subsequent shots are from a distance or angles that conceal the wound, and the rain partially washes away the blood. The rain symbolizes purification. Furthermore, Alex cradles Nigel's body closely. Due to the presence of an unreliable narrator element throughout the movie, with Alex being the primary storyteller, one can observe Alex's attitude and reaction towards the two aforementioned deaths. In Alex's eyes, Nigel is always in a state of perfect beauty - even in death.

The deep, almost obsessive love that drives one to "consummate the uncompleted marriage," similar to what the Templar Knight did to his Maraclea, could not be directed towards Susan - a young girl whom Alex just took a mere fancy of. Instead, it was directed towards Nigel - someone with whom Alex had complex feelings of love and hate intertwined to the point of torment, someone who possessed a piece of Alex's soul that was taken and engraved into his being.. It is possible that the grave being dug up and the theft of Susan's skull were just a show that Alex created to make fun of Sally. It is possible that in the box that Alex was carrying was Nigel's skull, and his grave was also perfectly reassembled before it was discovered by the police.
