Dear listener, it’s been quite a while since I’ve posted a tune with a massive set of pendulous balls. Leave it to musical artists like ZillaKami to fill that gaping hole like a metal peg hammered directly into the ear canal. And by metal, I mean he specializes in a not-so-delicate combination of metal and trap, or in simpler terms… trap metal. I stumbled across his music a mere two weeks ago, and after giving his catalog a scan, I can report to you there’s nothing quite like this sound on the musical market today. It’s a unique brand of hardcore punk that is raw, visceral, and completely offensive in both delivery and substance. As a pioneer of this genre, ZillaKami started off with rather humble beginnings ghost-writing for a scream rapper known as 6ix9ine. After having a falling out due to 6ix9ine engaging in an indecent act with a minor (which apparently, Zilla helped expose through photographic evidence), and probably a bit disgusted for lending his massive lyrical talents to a predator, he went on to formulate a hip-hop group called City Morgue, as well as gradually venturing into his own solo work. His one and only full-length album to date, 2021’s DOG BOY, showcases fifteen tunes mostly under three minutes which feature a wildly vacillating mix of hard-hitting and then melodic tracks. Folks, I really love metal, and I really enjoy the incorporation of so much heavy guitar into hip hop. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind sound. If you combine a hip hop/metal sound with outstandingly well-crafted brutal lyrics and a harsh vocal delivery, what you get is a product that is not only taboo but taboo with a fresh and genre-bending twist. This is an artist that executed a triple-axel jump and managed to stick the landing! I like any art form that takes chances and even invents something new in the process, and I can’t recommend that you smash play and immerse yourself in CHAINS highly enough for that very reason. Allow me to modify that previous statement. If you have thick skin, smash play. If you prefer something far softer around the edges with your hip hop, well, all I can say is DON’T smash play, but still join me next week for one more round of excellent hip hop, this time with honest-to-God R&B elements. Enjoy!
ZillaKami caught me by complete and total surprise, folks. His brand of hip hop is an uncommon feat and a rare treat. Image source: https://www.engmtc.co/media-drops/zillakami
