Popular/common: jotakak, Joseph and Caesar, josuyasu, jolmes + f.f., Squalo and Tiziano, Sorbet and Gelato, seccolata, bruabba, Koichi and Yukako, DIO and pucci, dinopants, meloghia, and gyjo (I think that's all the ones that wouldn't be considered rarepairs)
Not super popular from what I know: kiraboss, narmis, fugio, holpol, rubber soul and steely dan, Wekapipo and Magenta Magenta, and Weather Report and Anasui
Rarepairs: Mikitaka and Rohan, devochaka, Blackmore and Funny Valentine, and Illuso and Formaggio
I have basically invented this ship and it's a rarepair now: Massiolo/stoned cards
There is literally only one or two fanfics of this pair that could find: pocoloco and sandman, D-I-S-C-O and Ringo Roadagain, Oyecomova and Mrs. Robinson
Idk why I ship this there is no content I guess it's just for vibes?: Mountain Tim and Dr. Ferdinand

How beautiful is the heart of those who go through the worst storms in life and still choose to stay gentle, silent, patient, kind and humble. They win twice - here and hereafter.

I'm much happier with AoT's anime ending.
The eighty percent and the subsequent fucked up bonding sequence *might* be my fave part of the ending now.
Though I think Armin's talk with Zeke and Mikasa killing Eren might be above that.
It's that narmy, unintentionally funny stuff that might be the most memorable element of AoT, but I still cried at Armin's speech to Zeke.
The framing is done *so much better* it's not even funny.
The story still treats Historia like complete shit, the production values kind of fall apart by the end and the music choices are super strange (while adding to the uneasy part to it), but I love the gross, discordant nature of the entirety of the last 30 minutes that I didn't really feel with the manga.
The shell is covered in blood and Eren and Armin are sitting inside the blood of the fallen.
I think the framing really couldn't be more clear.
And by the end Mikasa is crying not just because she misses Eren, but also because all of the shit he put them through. And the scene on the ship is much more bitter.
Because of the extended scene with Eren and Armin, everything else basically gains a layer or two.
They cared for Eren, but they are also exhausted and really frustrated/angry with the shit he pulled and put on them and you really see the exhaustion here, through the wonky art.
So you have that triumphant music as a sign of an ending, but it's like a wierd twisted version of a generic happy anime ending.
It's so funny. And while it also feels super wierd and amatuerish, still perhaps confused, I think I kind of can't see AoT having a much different send-off.
Let it be messy and stupid and confused like all of its messy and stupid and confused characters.
And I can love it like that without dismissing any of the problems I have with it.
In the end Eren didn't break the cycle because the tree showed up again, so I think we'll in for a sequel in 10 or 20 years.
I think Eren replaced Ymir in the Paths because Mikasa didn't have the heart to completely get rid of his body. The point is that everyone was too nice.
But the last bit is pure thematic conjucture.
I hated the manga ending not because I thought it was awful, but because it felt so insecure and confused. Because it had both really good and really bad stuff in it.
This at least alleviated kind of a massive part of that issue for me. Not completely, but I truly think it's much better than the manga in a fairly significant way?
What can I say, I like messes. Intentional or otherwise.

please talk more about chobits. i am so mentally ill about this show
okay disclaimer that I've never watched the Chobits anime and I've only read the manga. I dunno if they changed any important details but I doubt they changed anything too major (maybe I should check the anime out at some point?)
Usually I like to format my essays in a coherent post but whatever. That's too hard rn. I'm just going to write about it in no particular order with no screencaps of the manga to prove my point you guys are just gonna have to take my word for it
I think it's SO funny that like. The huge dilemma at the end centered around android facial recognition. Like yes this series was written like 20 years ago and yeah it was writing about a time that's basically our present day, and technology has advanced impossibly fast that even their imagined cutting-edge technology looks horribly outdated at this point.
Without the ability to recognize each other, we will only ever be objects. When a robot can recognize your face, only then can love ever be possible. Hideki, did you know you just opened up a whole new world of data scraping and targeted advertising in your universe?
I don't really blame CLAMP though. I think it was never really about robots as technology but rather robots as a reflection of humanity. Like Minoru, who built a Persocom modeled after his sister who passed away in order to cope with his grief, like the baker who loved his old Persocom so much he married her... it's a story dreaming about human connection, how we're always longing for relationships.
Mixed feelings about Chi's backstory with Freya Ichiro and Chitose. On one hand it's very touching that these two scientists just straight up built their own daughters, and naturally they would build their daughters with the ability to love, and it REALLY feels in character (where the character is the field of computer science) and they would forget about biases in the computer's collected data (daily experiences of their robot daughters) that Freya would accidentally fall in love with Ichiro. That's so plausible it hurts. I also think it's mildly funny/heartbreaking that Freya's grief made her fucking shut down like here's that weird intersection between technology and personhood of androids like girl what!! you're like oh no my android is shutting down because of an endlessly recursive loop... ok then close the loop??? edit your daughter's code??? You are literally the only doctors for her in the world? you're just going to let her die like this?????
By the way I don't know if I'm using the correct names for everyone but I'm sure you can figure out who I'm talking about based on context anon
While I think that ^^^ whole thing is sad but also hilarious in a kind of narmy way, I do think that Minoru and the baker's story were excellently executed and are genuinely heartbreaking. The baker's story most of all. I cry every time I read the part where the press is harassing him and asking him about his dead wife and he goes "Stop it. Stop referring to her as 'my wife' or 'my android'. She had a name, and it was Yumi." That was sooo good bestie I go insane every single time... like that IS so terribly realistic, like you can say it's a metaphor for dementia where the person you love can no longer remember who you are, or who they are for that matter, but it's also such a real facet of technological decay where eventually... no matter how much you love a feature, or a machine, or an app, or a whatever... these are all things that are built and maintained by others. And one day that maintenance will stop. And one day it'll go down forever.
Minoru's story too... when Yuzuki (Yukari? I forgor :skull:) tries to hack into the government database by herself and almost gets shut down he gets really mad at her and she goes "sorry I know I'm supposed to be your dead sister and you would be super heartbroken if i died again I'll be more careful" and he goes "no man like yeah you did start off as a horrible coping mechanism but you're a new person now, with your own life experiences and not just a copy of my sister, you matter to me because you're you, not because you're a replacement for someone"
I think that's a theme that comes up a lot, actually. I think this series is meant to address the fear that technology will replace humans not only in terms of jobs and stuff, but even in terms of human connection and affection. Why love me when you can love your perfect android wife who will never argue back? And I think the answer that the series provides is, is that really the horrible future you think it is? Because the truth is that humans are capable of love, capable of so much love... we love and we lose and we love again, we pack bond with just about anything out there... is that really such a horrible thing?
Conceptually I think it's interesting, but once again, I feel like CLAMP's vision failed to accurately account for how technology actually is in real life. The amount of data harvesting that needs to be done, likely unconsensually, is insane, and probably renders this whole operation deeply unethical on a level that they didn't even consider. Yeah I think it's great that we can love robots and that we can make robots that love us back. Not in our capitalist hellscape though.
I haven't read it recently, but I don't think there was ever a point that I felt like the pacing of the story was bad. Yeah, there are a ton of detours and side stories, but they all felt very relevant to the main story.
I know it's like. Chi's story or whatever. But also it feels like Hideki is also sidelined sometimes. It sometimes feels like he was just a necessary component to get this story to work, and without Chi he isn't anything (he's just ken kind of vibe). He's never brought up in CLAMP's other stories while Chi is (multiple times, even! TRC and Kobato I believe), even though the Chobits story is from his perspective. i dunno lol
I also think the art of Chobits is gorgeous. Among CLAMP's works I think it's probably second place, after Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle (thought I might be forgetting some; it's not like I have a definitive ranking LOL) and tied with Angelic Layer

I'm watching the Eragon movie after rereading the book this year.
It's kind of more enjoyable, sometimes because its changes legitimately improve things but usually because they stray into So Bad It's Good territory.
Durza is still generic af, but Galby is delightfully narmy.
Sloan feels more like an actual character, and the idea that the Spine is considered royal property is a lot simpler than "Sloan's wife died there because it's cursed, maybe, but Eragon can go in there because shut up."
"All hail Eragon, the mighty hunter!" And just like that, the movie makes Roran and Eragon feel more like brothers than Paolini managed in the first two books. Also, they're eight-year-old dorks in teenage bodies.
Sass-master Arya.
I am both annoyed and amused that the Urgals are just burly guys. They give them a little face makeup, but still.
Not really feeling Saphira's voice. I just imagined it huskier.
Durza summons the Ra'zac from the ground like Power Rangers villains. WTF (affectionate).
Eragon figures out that Brom was a Dragon Rider! And just like that, he's outstripped book!Eragon's supposed brilliance.
Arya is awake when she meets Eragon. Makes for a less awkward romantic arc. Also she just says she's a princess, so again, kudos on the screenwriters for not bothering with the obvious twists.
I think there's a passing line about dwarves and elves, but Arya is ostensibly human. There are some guys in the Varden who are clearly supposed to be dwarves but never referred to as such.
Why does the spell for dragon vision let Eragon see through walls? And why does the fire spell make things levitate?
"I expected someone a little more...well, more." Is this line actually clever, or do I just enjoy Eragon getting dunked on?
The whole thing with Brom flying on Saphira as he dies is kind of nice. It would have worked better if they mentioned that Saphira was named after his own dragon, though.
Murtagh is weird, because he acts totally different than book!Murtagh and is introduced with a different backstory. He even offers to lead Eragon to the Varden, which is directly opposed to his motivation in the book. But canon reasserts itself once they get there, so you're left wondering why he chose to do this.
Murtagh's prison cell, incidentally, appears to be a cage left out in the open.
I said Galby was funny, but how many scenes do we need where he's just whispering threats at Durza?
In the books, there are moments where I feel like Eragon has more chemistry with Nasuada than he ever has with Arya. Given the gratuitous "walking in one him shirtless" scene, I feel like the screenwriters agree.
Most of the clothes are Generic Medieval Drab, but then there was one costume designer who was like "NO! Shiny and exotic!"
One change I don't like: Saphira breathing fire before the battle starts is supposed to be cool, ooh-she's-badass-now, but sorry, having her dramatically do that at the end of the battle to save Eragon's life is much better.
So Durza summoned the Ra'zac from the ground, and now he summoned the Lethrblaka from Saphira's fire? somehow? Is it supposed to be made of smoke?
They're not very well done, but the script is trying to give Eragon some arcs that he doesn't have in the book. Some of it is generic "I don't want to be the Chosen One" stuff, but there's also this idea that he might get Saphira killed, like Brom with his dragon, augmented by the fact that Brom's death is kind of Eragon's fault in this version.
Speaking of which, the hell you letting Eragon think Saphira is dead, Murtagh? It's not just a jerk move, it's also out of character. Murtagh is not jokey, either in this movie or the book.
I was gonna say that the final scene is desperately trying to convince us that Eragon and Arya have chemistry, but I actually don't think it's trying that hard.
*watching the credits* That random guy who looked like a dwarf but was never referred to as a dwarf was supposed to be Hrothgar? I assumed it was Orik. He didn't seem to be a king or anything.

Of course studio trigger had to make the orc episode worse with the narrator smoothing over Marcille’s racism in that narmy “we all eat”
I do think the writer got better at handling the topics as she went and started treating things more seriously like her other works and not just a tribute to rpgs of her youth, but they made it even more rocky

Thought MI:7’s title was a choice motivated by the narmy action movie desire to sound cool and then found out that Dead Reckoning is a real calculation that measures your current moving position from where you started. Like Fuck. that’s Actually Good. Ugh.

If you were forced to choose between Mephiles, Surge or Thorn, which one of the three would you say is "The Least Shite" and why?
As much as it pains me to say it... Mephiles.
Once upon a time, he was the worst of the worst for me. I said as much in the past, including in my Sweet or Shite review for him. He's still a moron masquerading as a cunning mastermind, he remains overrated to this day, and my overall opinion on him has not changed.
But all of a sudden, various characters have sprung out of nowhere to dethrone him in record time. Surge is hyped up even more obnoxiously as the ultimate foe, despite having even less to show for it. The End suffers from the same problem, and the story it's part of also milked Super Sonic dry and elevated the DBZ mentality to new, more unbearable levels than before. As for Thorn, at least Mephiles is already a villain, and one who Shadow bluntly tells to get to fuck; few things are as infuriating as a holier-than-thou loony who you're expected to root for (see: IDW Sonic).
Mephiles also has the silver lining of being voiced by Dan Green. And since he lacks a mouth, that means he can't pull the same Narmy cum faces that Surge regularly belts out. He also has some admittedly good boss themes. Surge, being a comic villain, does not.
...Has it really come to this? Am I really giving some level of positive feedback to Mephiles of all characters? All thanks to the even worse repurcussions of Surge? And Thorn? And The End? And Sage? And Nine? And-

We need a trope name for when a phrase or gesture is introduced in a text that is meant to show romantic love, but then is used at the end of the story to demonstrate familial love.
Cause I can think of three good examples (The Princess Bride, Gravity Falls, and October Sky), and I strongly suspect that there's more.
And then I need to talk about why the trope works so well in The Princess Bride but comes across as narmy in October Sky.
