My first post here was TEN YEARS AGO today, so here's a little story about how this Tumblr came to be.

I've been sharing my artwork online since about 2007. Before Tumblr I posted frequently on the now-defunct ConceptArt.org forums, sometimes on DeviantArt, and a little bit on Blogspot. On a couple of occasions my brother Nik told me that I should start a Tumblr, but I wasn't so sure about the idea. Social media made me uncomfortable and I wasn't exactly great at communicating with strangers on the internet. That's still true today. (Apologies to everyone who sends me asks and DMs, I really appreciate them all even if I'm not always good at responding.)

On January 9th, 2012, I was eating lunch at work when Nik sent me a text with a link to chriskotiesen.tumblr.com. He made it for me. It looked like this:

He gave me the password and suggested that I delete that stuff and start uploading my own work before Google cached the page and this became the top search result for my name.

I still wasn't sure about this site, so after taking the screenshot above I erased the content and left the page blank for more than 2 years. I became a CGHub user, but soon after the sudden collapse of that site in April 2014, I deciding to finally try using this account.

This is a dumb question but how do you do your lighting? I see people doing what seems to be just a flat color in a world space, but when I try to replicate it the whole piece looks either too dull or too bright.

Not a dumb question, but I don't use lighting at all in my renders!

Any "shading" you see on my models is part of the materials and done manually as part of my texturing process, you can see how I do my materials here or check out my general 3D advice tag here.

Essentially 99% of my textures are just a single RGB value or a gradient between mutiple values, and they aren't affected by lighting in any way.

I think they're cool! Their designs are great and I love that they're a couple shitty nobles from up-hive, playing cultist and eating people for fun. Fatshark is great at making charming characters

I hope we get more big boss fights or other activities that require really tight teamwork like that. Even my Auric-only squad had to sweat for this.

60 to 80 cats lost??? I was expecting like. 20. I’m surprised that everybody seems so (relatively) chill and untraumatized about it. They’re barely even clans compared to what they used to be.

Oh, they are all definitely traumatized by it but it's like how people are traumatized by COVID. Its C-PTSD, something a lot more complex and hard to identify. As well, the height of it was the Leafbare before the story starts with a decline in cases in February so most of the grieving already took place off screen.

That being said, there are signs of it still present in the story. In the piece after Toadpaw is taken, Yarrowshade mentions being sick of watching people die and being unable to do anything about it. That's mostly in reference to watching a huge percentage of his Clan die, people who raised him and grew up beside him all taken by Red Gut (aka Feline Distemper). Currentseeker, Sunstar, basically every cat's family and mentors and friends, they all died. And while we didn't see them in the pit of grief that absence is definitely a part of the characters if you're looking for it.
