If you find yourself in the later category of deciding adults can’t be trusted, chances are you have a dismissive avoidant attachment style. Your instinct when faced with conflict is to shut down and run away or be defensive and logical, you often attract partners and friends who are overbearing, you’re uncomfortable with asking for help and being helped makes you anxious.

I’m saying this as an autistic person with a VERY dismissive avoidant attachment style, even doing the little progress I’ve made has been so freeing. hard!! scary!! but freeing. I can ask my friends for help without shaking out of fear, I can ask my body what it wants and I can understand what it’s telling me, I can have an emotion (!!) and not immediately want to run away and hide, and I’m not such a fucking control freak anymore. Do I still have avoidant tendencies? Absolutely. Will I ever become entirely secure? not sure.. don’t think so.. but has my life become significantly easier, more in tune with myself and others, and less bleak since I started working on my attachment style? Fuck yes.

I just wanted to add this as maybe a glimmer of hope because while it’s so fucking sad that this is and continues to be a wildly common experience for so many, I think it’s very important to mention cases where you’ve healed or at least improved from it and how. That yes it’s not fair what happened, but you don’t have to stay in the dark and suffer alone anymore.
