mie!! i’m so late to the party but i absolutely loved ‘NICE’, it made me feel so warm and fuzzy <33 it’s so unique to its own and the flow of it is beyond wonderful!
what is married life like for oc and eren in ‘NICE’? is it just like before/do you have any nice!husband!eren headcanons?
AHH I’m so happy you liked it and that you took the time to come and tell me!! Married life for them... doesn’t really differ from what their lives looked like before actually hehe. They were basically married without knowing it 🙄🙄 idiots to lovers or something like that; but here are a few head canons of the months immediately following NICE!
You officially got married in Paris on the fourth, not too long after Carla’s wedding. You guys flew in some officials, checked through all the technicalities, and signed the papers right on top of the Eiffel Tower (access granted by the city of Paris upon request of one Carla Jaeger, of course). 
Aside from having the most picturesque location in the world to sign your marriage certificate, there wasn’t anything lavish in celebration after that. Carla’s wedding was just three days earlier, after all, and was still the talk of the local press. You did have a small party with your friends (Jean, Armin, Mikasa, Marco, Erwin, Levi, Hange came from the Alps for Carla’s wedding) in your overly large hotel room. Just some music, room service, and lots and lots of champagne.
Eren extended your winter break vacation by two weeks for an impromptu honeymoon to the Bahamas before you went home. Let’s just say you did not leave the safe haven of your hotel room very often, except to dip into the ocean a few nights (benefits of a private beach).
After getting married, the rings swapped places; the band with diamonds previously on your pointer finger was put on a chain (a new one since Eren threw the other one on the ground 💀), and you now wear the engagement ring on your ring finger.
Eren doesn’t like it when you take off the ring (the ring being the engagement ring). The first time you were going into the water, you were going to put it on the chain for safekeeping, but he protested very strongly. He would rather it rest safely in your suitcase than go around your neck again.
Your wedding bands are actually very similar to the band you already have: gold and diamond encrusted. Eren’s, however, has an emerald in the center, like the two emeralds that serve as the pistils of the sunflowers in your engagement ring (for reference, that ring looks something like this, but with a gold band). The bands were the first thing Eren bought when you guys got home.
Your friends in Dubai (Ymir, Reiner, Annie, Connie, Sasha) had no idea that you and Eren got married over winter break. Safe to say they were all… very surprised to hear the news. Connie was a little bit bitter because he missed it, and wolf whistles every time he sees your ring (even though he’s seen it before because you wore it on the necklace every day).
You got married in January, but have an official wedding in the process of being planned sometime around late summer/early fall. Carla insisted that you guys have a wedding despite already being married, and Eren agreed whole heartedly. They are both very into planning it, and yes, Eren is somewhat of a bridezilla, and his mom is enabling him 100% please.
The night you signed the wedding papers, Carla lent you an off-white satin couture gown from one of her past collections. She is designing and making your official wedding dress by hand, with the help of Mikasa.
The two of them are also making Eren’s suit, and all the outfits for your wedding party. Carla will murder you if you even so much as hint at just buying other suits/dresses. This is her baby’s wedding, and she runs one of the most renowned fashion houses of the modern century; she’ll be damned if you guys wear something off the rack.
You considered a destination wedding, but settled on having it in New York. You haven’t decided a location yet, and it’s the one thing Eren isn’t actually picky about (because you know he’s gonna go ham on the decor no matter where it is bye).
Jean doesn’t know it yet, but he’s your maid of honor. Good luck and best of wishes to Eren picking between Mikasa and Armin for best man.
Even before confessing and getting married, Eren never slept much in his own bedroom. You both have California king sized beds in your rooms, and more often than not, Eren would sleep with you in your bed. You didn’t always cuddle, but he just liked to be there (for your presence, and because he was grossly in love bye)… you ended up cuddling a lot of the time tho.
He wants to renovate your apartment now that you both “officially” live in the same bedroom, even though it’s not necessary. He just likes renovating things.
You guys go to dinner every weekend, and sometimes you even go dancing. Eren still can’t dance and he doesn’t actually care to learn; it just reminds him of being in Nice with you.
He kisses your ring finger every morning waking up and every night before going to bed; sometimes he even does it subconsciously in his sleep.
He holds your hand way more often. Not just because you guys are together now, but because he likes seeing the ring where it’s meant to be. He also notices that it helps to curb your anxiety, which is a good bonus.
Eren wants kids, but he hasn’t really brought it up yet. He knows you both are fairly young, and that you’re still technically in school, but that’s not really a deterrent for him.
The only reason he’s waiting to say something is because you guys have a lot going on with wedding planning and settling in to “married life”—there’s a lot of tedious paperwork to be done and documents to update. He’ll bring it up next year when all that is settled.
On the subject of school, you are still attending university, but have been eligible for graduation for a year now. You had enough credits to graduate last (the year before NICE) December, but there were a few more classes you wanted to take out of interest that hadn’t been running in past years, so you stayed for all four years. Eren picks you up from your lectures.
Eren graduated in December before you guys went on vacation. By normal standards, that’s a semester early. However, he was supposed to be in this Honors Arts and Sciences program, that should have taken him another two semesters. He decided it wasn’t worth it, and dropped the honors part, and with that, had enough credits to graduate, so he did.
A college degree is really more of an accessory for him anyway, and school was never his thing. He’s decently smart, sure, but he never enjoyed school because of the emphasis on exams; he’s more of a creative person, a dreamer if you will. The only reason he even went to Columbia was because you decided to go there. 
He and you both have enough money to live more than comfortably if neither of you decided to get a job after graduation… way more than enough/ But Eren isn’t doing nothing; he’s actually sorta been working his way into the world of professional interior design, and he really loves it. You’re proud of him, and more than anything, happy that he decided to go for something he loves.
Armin and Jean also graduated a semester early. Armin’s been living with Mikasa since Connie got his own place off-campus in January. Jean is a little upset blondie is living with his girlfriend before he is, but it’s whatever 🙄if it’s gonna be anyone, at least it’s Armin. 
Carla mentioned that Eren got married sometime during a NYFW interview (along with talking about her own recent marriage), and since then you both have interviewed for two magazines, one of which featured pictures from your smaller party in Paris. You’ve gotten requests from Vanity Fair and Vogue about your bigger wedding later in the year, but you guys haven’t invited any media officials as of yet.
You and Eren attend the MET Gala almost every year. You don’t walk the red carpet and nobody is scrambling to take your pictures; but you have passes because of Carla. Also, you could just buy your way in if you wanted you (and your friends have in the past). This year, Eren had to pay two security officers $10k in bribes because you two snuck away to fuck in… a part of the museum not sectioned off for the event. Whoopsies.
Even before Eren got him arrested, going out to brunch was kind of your and Armin’s thing. Eren insists he should be invited now that he’s your husband. He is not. (His bitterness grows when he learns that Jean has secured himself an invite somehow).
Eren sold the car he got arrested for drag racing in. He never told you why—and as far as transportation goes, it wasn’t a big deal because you guys have other cars—but, to him, it was a kind of symbol. He thinks it’s dumb if he thinks too long about it, but he just didn’t wanna have that there are a reminder of how he’d hurt you and his mom.
Jean still drives you to your therapy appointments, but now Eren picks you up. Eren also goes to therapy himself, and has been before you guys got married; his therapist says he’s undoubtedly happier in recent sessions… like a weight’s been lifted off his shoulder.
As far as drugs go, there’s, of course, weed on a happy occasion, or at a party; but he hasn’t touched coke since that one time (which was also the first time he’d ever done it). That’s not even him being a changed man, he just didn’t like it—he only argued with you about it because he was being stubborn. He’s more of a drinker than anything, and absolutely loves to get you drunk on a special occasion, too; he always has. He thinks you look cute, and he likes taking care of you.
You have lived in that apartment with Eren for years before marrying him, yet he insisted you needed to christen the place like it was brand new… at this point, the only places you haven’t fucked in are the elevator itself, the foyer, the storage closet, and the pool. The latter only because it’s been too cold in NYC… trust and believe pool sex is coming lmfao.
Eren bought the apartment and renovated and designed it, but he never did like being in it all alone, and that’s been magnified since you got married. If he’s there by himself, he’s usually in the living area, napping on the daybed. He waits for your faithfully every day, and is hardly in the bedroom if you’re not.
Eren has not stopped introducing you as his wife since January. Even to people in passing like cashiers and bartenders, everyone in the whole damn city probably knows you guys got hitched.

first born to louis rousseau and his young, model wife valentina, cyrus was another strapping heir to a line indebted to the o’sheas, albeit far behind others. a strong boy with a sturdy will and an even stronger mind, cyrus was a beloved child, doted on by his mother for his looks and encouraged by his father to be the best he could be in every aspect of his life as the second man in the rousseau family.
an o’shea general, their father wasn’t shy about bringing his children along when it was time to set the wrong things right. cyrus could recall on many occasions where his father returned to their car, knuckles bloody, stoic and firm with a word of advice and warning on what to look for in weaker men as he grew older.
always taught that nothing could hurt him unless he gave it license to, cyrus was rambunctious and foolhardy, always flooded with a charm and wit. paired with his keen instinct for sparring and ways of outsmarting those his senior, he had a knack for mischief from the start.
fear is a fickle thing in the eyes of a walsh general’s son; ever changing, always political and fluctuating in immediacy and relevancy. still, there was one fear that remained constant; losing those he loved.
more often than not it was a distant, almost irrelevant fear; one that had no place among conscious thought. at least until he gained two younger siblings, well into his life. after they came, he felt a need to step up and be there for them in a different way than parents ever could. he wanted to be the trusted confidant, the one they came to for help before they went to their parents; the reliable brother that loved them fiercely and with everything he had in him. cyrus cared for them beyond all others; no one matters to him half as much as they do.
moving through years in elementary and middle school, cyrus was popular, charming, well known and well liked, but could tip attitude at the drop of the hat. the moment he was provoked, his wrath came out and found the object of his rage. that indignation, the anger within him, and the willingness to hit first and worry later landed him in and out of detention and even one instance of juvenile arrest.
his mother, more often than not, let the discipline thereafter be dealt with by his father. she loved him, he knew, she just wasn’t the most tolerant woman of the inner workings of a child’s mind, especially one as privileged as her son was.
it seemed worthwhile to louis to enroll young cyrus into boxing classes; he needed discipline and anger management, maybe even to get his ass knocked to the ground every now and again to keep him humble. not only did his fortunes improve, but so did his ability to work past his issues with rage.
a stand out feature of his youth was taking note of his mother’s descent from being a mother with him, to a friend with his brother, and all but an acquaintance with his younger sister. he hated how passive she became, how lacking she was in her attitudes toward her children.
once in training, his studies soared, both academically and in boxing. high school couldn’t have been easier. he was popular as ever, a shining example of what one should be; respectful, protective, intelligent, and above all; engaging. everyone seemed to want him as a friend or a fuck, and cyrus saw nothing wrong with it.
on occasion, there were times he’d take it too far in the boxing ring, move too fiercely and endanger others training around him. cyrus found it far too easy to fight dirty. He liked the snap of bone beneath his knuckles, or the squelch of sweat as a body hit the octagon beneath him.  chastised for his behavior and willingness to act out of line, cyrus knew the behavior had to cease. collecting outlets for his anger, he took the advice of his coach and started to write.
he wasn’t good at it, or particularly knowledgeable in the rules of prose, but writing was his therapy. it was the only sympathy he afforded himself to have, and soon the bookshelves in his bedrooms were heavily lined with journals filled cover to cover with simple-minded musings, thoughts, and reports of the days where he could barely tell sunrise from bedtime. 
after high school graduation, cyrus decided he’d go the way of the navy. he wanted to make his parents and siblings proud; a noble son that learned the noble art of war. leaving them all behind would hurt, but it would be worth it in the long run. who better to protect his family than a man with all the skills of a trained, combat killing machine?
cyrus signed up when he was 18 and shipped off to basic not long after. nothing shaped his fears for the future quite like the fall of the world trade center in 2001. watching live from a tv in the cafeteria in his senior year of high school; he could recall the tension in the air; everyone in that room knew the wars they spent so much time learning about were now outside their very windows.
he was too tired, he had lived through and seen so much, and despite it all he looked forward to seeing his sister. when he was on his first tour overseas, he took a spare moment to reflect on his family and how much he really missed them. finally, he had time to call home and was soon after met with the news that their mother left. he hadn’t felt a true rage like that in all the months he’d been at war; his efforts were usually better spent. 
after the start of the iraq war, cyrus was sent into active combat and shipped overseas to afghanistan. he was a part of two tours, the latter of which was cut short by the detonation of an ied. his left leg was shattered and though they were able to salvage the limb, it wasn’t without extensive surgery and the implantation of a steel rod. cyrus received a purple heart for his action in the service and was honorably discharged and left to return home as a decorated veteran.
by the time he returned to chicago, he had seen too much on his tours, fought and killed and his rage was tripled tenfold. the brothers and sisters he cherished in the service had been lost, killed, or moved on. cyrus felt as if part of him was left out there, far from where he was in chicago.
when he had gone off to war, he worried for his siblings. upon his return, they worried for him; many years his juniors, they couldn’t have been more than twelve and ten respectively. the first fourth of july home was a noted one in the rousseau family. at the first thundering echo of a firework detonating in the sky, cyrus ran and tackled his siblings to the ground and covered their heads. It was a snap instinct, one that came with the echo of bombs overhead.
soon after, he was encouraged to see a therapist through the local va. diagnosed with ptsd as many veterans are, the therapist had an almost sickeningly positive outlook on cyrus’s prognosis. it seemed he was one of the few she believed in to pull himself out of the binds of a mental illness.
after a few sessions, his therapist encouraged him to get a service animal. after signing up and getting his certifications for a service animal taken care of, he adopted a rottweiler puppy. he named him LOOMIS.
however, there is no one can fake a fantasy like the son of a model. outwardly, cyrus was still charming, still personable, and most of all: still lethal. writing did precious little to staunch his emotions, but fighting did. though his training was limited compared to what it had been when he was a kid, he rejoined the local boxing gym and threw himself into the ring. the adrenaline pumping through his veins, the echoes that stirred his memories of war, the numbing catharsis that came after the bell rang all felt like coming home. it seemed the more violent the outburst, the more he felt at home.
there was nothing out of the realm of possibility for cyrus and his tastes; sleeping around, drinking, partying, fighting, living the reckless life of a daredevil whenever given the chance. joining the o’sheas after his father was a move that made sense. every risky behavior was lidocaine on a burn, a cool soothing menthol that eased the scald of emotions he’d rather not feel. binge after binge, everything started to blur together- no obligation, no feeling, nothing but the bed of a woman who would have him.
when he carried out what was asked of him as an initiation, he did so quickly, cleanly, and concisely. after all he’d seen on the plane of war, the carnage came as second nature. it made sense to do it for the sake of the family he claimed.
like all fears, his soon became realized. their father disappeared. though cyrus searched, he quickly lost hope they would ever find their father alive. he had seen enough in the service to know that if someone was gone for long enough, the’d never come back. with this effectuation of his father’s fate in mind, it became all too apparent to cyrus that everything changed.
cyrus couldn’t afford to be a mess in front of his siblings or in front of the walsh’s. he was the theoretical head of the rousseau’s. he would be their protector, and do everything in his power to ensure their safety and happiness. it felt as though everything fell to him; he could not be anything less than the man his father.

&&guests may mistake me as (danielle campbell), but really i am (spencer jean + cis female + she/her) and my DOB is (03/15/1997). i am applying for the (event coordinator) position as part of the EHP and would like to live in suite (209). i should be hired because i am (empathetic, honest & selfless), but i can also be (pessimistic, fearful & indecisive) at times. personally, i like to (blog & drink wine) when off the clock, but that won’t interfere with work.

The youngest of 4 kids. 
Her whole family didn’t have much growing up. Both parents worked weird jobs to get them all through financially.
She was really close to her older cousin, Dan from a very young age. He would take her out often and they got very close. 
Most of the family didn’t think much of it until Spencer turned six, and even then it was just weird glances occasionally from family members. 
Spencer herself felt like Dan hung the moon in the sky. He was always kind to her and never made her feel stupid. Plus he was older and gave her so much of his time so it always made her feel special.
It was not longer after her eighth birthday that Dan pulled her to the side and said he wanted to play a new game. She was hesitant at first to give him what he explained as “special touches” but he insisted that it would make him very happy, and she always wanted him to be happy.
This “game” went on until she was eleven. She explained it to her father who was horrified after he realized what this game was. He confronted Dan, who was now eighteen, and he denied it. 
Not longer after, Spencer’s three brothers paid him a visit. He was found in an alley all alone the next morning, completely naked and unconscious. 
Spencer felt like a husk after she no longer had any contact with Dan. So much so that she began to lash out and she wasn’t the bright and happy child that she had been. 
Her mother and father started looking into programs for her but quickly realized that they couldn’t afford any of them. After much conversation and tears, they decided to pack her up and send her to her mother’s widowed sister, Maggie.
Maggie was always very eclectic and outspoken and she’d been lonely since her husband died before they could have any children together. She was so excited to have Spencer come stay with her that she gave her her own completely furnished room with a computer and TV. 
Spencer was very hesitant to leave her parents and brothers. She knew that their home wasn’t much, but it was home. Maggie lived on the rich side of town and she wasn’t completely sure if she’d be able to fit in over there. Her mother and father both explained to her that she could come visit whenever she wanted and her brothers would come by as often as they could. 
After reassurance from her parents, Spencer packed up the very few belongings she actually cared about and moved in with Maggie. 
The first few weeks were a whirlwind of shopping trips. Maggie worked from home for a high profile company and her husband had left her a rather large fortune. And Maggie already adored Spencer and spared no expense for her niece. New clothes, games, furniture for her room. Spencer wasn’t exactly comfortable with all the money she knew was being spent, but she already felt as if she could trust Maggie more than anyone else she’d ever met. 
Maggie got Spencer into therapy not long after she moved in. Her therapist explained as gently as she could to Spencer what had happened to her. No one up until that point had explained to Spencer that what Dan had done was wrong, because they didn’t really know how. Maggie had to take her home in tears after that specific therapy session. 
Spencer’s therapist suggested different activities to help her cope. She began painting, writing, playing various instruments as well as throwing herself headfirst into her academics all while adjusting to her new life with Maggie. 
Under Maggie’s guidance, Spencer breezed through middle school. She made a small group of friends and socialized fairly often in and out of school. By eighth grade, she was in all honors classes and even there she was requesting harder and more complex assignments. 
Spencer visited often with her family and grew extremely close to her brothers. Her father often still blamed himself for her relationship with Dan but her mother often scolded him for this as lovingly as she could. As they watched their daughter flourish with Maggie, they both knew that they had made the right choice for her, even if sometimes it didn’t feel that way. 
Her freshman year of high school, Maggie requested the school test her for her grade level versus just putting her into freshman classes. Maggie knew that Spencer had much more in her mind than she often led on, and insisted that she be tested. To Spencer’s shock, she tested out of both freshman and sophomore year. According to all of her test scores, she was at a junior year level. She was signed up for junior year classes and started her first year of high school. 
Spencer was terrified of the potential bullying this situation would be her into, but much to her surprise, she made many friends with her upperclassmen peers. They often came to her for advice and homework help. 
She graduated Valedictorian at the age of sixteen. She had colleges seeking her out before the end of her junior year but she didn’t want to leave Maggie. Over the five years she had spent with Maggie, they had grown very very close. Spencer adored Maggie and the little routine that they had just naturally fallen into. 
Spencer took courses to become an event planner/coordinator. It was something she’d always enjoyed helping with as a kid and teenager so she figured why not. Plus living in the Chicago area, she knew there would never be a shortage of people needing an event coordinator. She was able to get all of the certifications she needed in a little less than a year. At seventeen, she began going to the University of Chicago. She majored in Psychology and minored in Visual Arts. 
College for Spencer was amazing. She started dating not long after she started attending University because in high school she felt like it just wasn’t the right time after all of her trauma and hung out with the potheads on campus.
She met a guy named Tanner on her first day of classes. He was her ideal man, or at least what she thought it was. He held doors open for her, brought her flowers, and held her hand around his friends. But not long after they started getting physically involved, he started to feel like he had some entitlement to her. He started to convince her she didn’t need to spend time with her family and more importantly, Maggie. He started keeping her at his apartment as often as he could. And quickly, it turned physically abusive. He started to convince her she wasn’t worth any of the time anyone else but him was giving her. 
Spencer was finally able to sneak away and see Maggie for a weekend. She was telling Maggie what had been happening and she watched her get angrier than she had ever seen her, even after telling her everything that had happened with Dan when she was a kid. Maggie drove her back to Tanner’s apartment and helped her collect her things, as well as reporting him to the campus. 
Tanner did attempt to contact her after he was expelled from the University but Maggie was quick to help her get a restraining order just in case. 
Spencer graduated with her degree at the age of twenty-one and on the dean’s list. Her whole family showed up for her graduation and she was given a bouquet by each of her brothers.
Her parents offered for her to move back in with them, but she politely declined. She wanted to stay with Maggie and help her with whatever she could.

18. The end of the year, pt.01
Hyde arrived home in the early morning hours. As soon as the back door closed behind him, he stripped out of his coat, hat and boots and stretched himself.
“Ah, what a wonderful night!”, he sighed in enjoyment.
Jekyll snorted inside his head. “You started a brawl in the bar, nobbled several men and bruised the poor toffer you were engaging with. Then you came back here as if nothing happened.”
Hyde giggled: “Oh, that was fun! Did you see the faces of the other blokes in the bar, when I flung that one guy against a wall?”
“The one twice your size? Yes, I saw. And their faces, when you broke into evil laughter.”
“Comedy gold!”
“For you, it certainly was. I just found it embarrassing.”
“Come on, look at the bright side! The barman was so anxious to get rid of me that I didn't even have to pay for the drinks!”
Jekyll chuckled in his head. “Well, I'm afraid to ruin the rest of the night for you.”
Hyde blinked. “How?”, he wanted to know.
“You're grounded for a week, unless we go to our appointments with Lady Summers. Just until some grass has grown over the incident.”
“You're so mean to me!”, the brunette whined and pouted at the Doctor's reflection.
“Now, don't sulk. I bought you sweets. They should last you for a week”, Jekyll consoled him.
Hyde's mood brightened immediately.
Jekyll had a light headache in the morning, but it was nothing he couldn't handle (luckily Hyde hadn't drunk too much the night before). It was nothing compared to the massive hangovers he usually woke up with. He could have kissed his alter ego for taking it easy on their first night out. He didn't express that, even though he was pretty sure that Hyde knew it anyway.
He spent the morning with his servants, laughing and telling them amusing stories out of Lady Summers' household (that is, as much as his contract with her allowed – one of the paragraphs had been about mutual discretion after all).
In the afternoon he went to his appointment with Lady Summers, under the guise of being invited over for tea.
“Ah, hello!”, the Prussian noblewoman greeted the doctor, when her butler lead him into the greenhouse. Utterson and Lanyon were here too.
“Hello, you three”, Jekyll replied cheerfully. “It's a wonderful day, isn't it?”
They nodded.
“Indeed it is”, Lady Summers agreed with a smile, “You're in a good mood, I see.”
“Oh, certainly!”, Jekyll confirmed. “Hyde took it easy last night, so I woke up with a light headache instead of a full-grown hangover. For me that is a reason to be in a good mood!”
The others chuckled in amusement.
Lanyon smiled. “And I could sleep peacefully for the last few nights. Looks like I'll be able to reopen my surgery next year.”
“And I don't have to hide my feelings anymore”, Utterson laughed.
The blond felt his heart beat higher and grinned like an idiot.
Neither do I, he replied in his head.
“Please don't get all lovey-dovey on me again!”, Hyde groaned. “You were all mushy during Christmas tiding, now it's time to tone it down.”
Oh shut up, Jekyll retorted, You can't deny that you enjoyed the attention Gabriel gives to you!
Hyde grumbled something that sounded like denial.
“How about you, Milady?”, Jekyll asked curiously.
She grinned: “Well, it's the 30th December and I still haven't received an invitation to the new year celebration in Buckingham Palace. That is a good reason for me to be in a good mood.”
Jekyll laughed: “I'm surprised. Aren't those celebrations mandatory for all courtiers?”
“Usually they would be”, the Countess confirmed, “But the royal family knows me and I know them. They know and respect my desire to celebrate Christmas and New Year at home in the circle of my servants.”
That's very kind of them, Jekyll marvelled.
“It is”, Lady Summers agreed with a smile. “But like I said, Her Majesty and Their Highnesses know and like me. You would be surprised at how nice and normal people they are in private. They only invite me, when they want to spice up their parties a little bit. After all, there is nothing quite like chattering with someone who knows all the gossip and more and whether it's true or not. Especially Queen Victoria loves a good laugh.”
The gentlemen trio burst into laughter.
They all could well imagine how that went. By now they all had discovered, that the tiny Lady was known for snide remarks towards the members of her class.
“You're having questions, Dr. Jekyll”, she suddenly spoke up.
That wasn't a question.
He nodded. “Don't worry, Milady, it's nothing too private”, he assured her.
“I know. Go on, fire away!”
“Why do you hold your sessions in your greenhouse?”, he wanted to know first.
“I discovered that the plants have a soothing influence on my clients. It's prettier and healthier than those nasty arsenic wallpapers. As for those of my clients who are allergic to pollen, I receive them in my parlour.”
“So you don't use wallpapers?”
“No. I hate the patterns, I hate the poisonous ingredients and I hate the attitude of the producers, that all the poisonous metals aren't dangerous in wallpaper. They're wrong. I know that, because I tested it on rats. People don't understand, why I don't plaster my house with colourful wallpapers, but at least the paint on the walls doesn't make me sick. Besides, my furniture and décor beautify my interior just fine.”
Jekyll couldn't argue with that.
Once again Lady Summers was wiser than the rest.
“One last question”, he said, “Why did you become a therapist?”
Suddenly she looked uncharacteristically unsure.
“I'm afraid that's a question I have no satisfactory answer to”, she told him hesitantly.
Jekyll nodded, even though he was disappointed. By now he knew better than to pry.
“I have a question!”, Hyde suddenly piped up and Jekyll withheld a groan.
Lady Summers lifted an eyebrow. “What is it, Mr. Hyde?”
“I will never get used to how she can talk to both of them”, Lanyon muttered, but Jekyll ignored him.
“Your first name is Luise, right? What does the F. W. in your name stand for?”
The Prussian grimaced. “It stands for Friederike Wilhelmine. I was named after my grandfather. I have more given names – eight in total – but I don't want to give all of my names and abbreviating all of them would just look ridiculous on my brass sign. Even my maiden name was insanely long. Only my personal certificates contain my full name. I prefer to just be Lady Summers, or Luise to my family and close friends.”
With that, Hyde was satisfied, much to Jekyll's relief.
And he wasn't surprised. Lady Summers was an aristocrat. Having at least four given names was normal among the high nobility and it often said a lot about the family the name carrier was from. No wonder the Lady didn't want to talk about it.
“And what about you? What are you three going to do tomorrow? Who will you celebrate New Year with?”, she inquired curiously.
The three gentlemen looked at each other and smiled.
“We're going to celebrate together”, Lanyon informed her.
The Prussian nodded. “That's wonderful.”
Then she turned to Jekyll: “Let's talk about something else. I heard your servants threw you a big welcome home party?”
“Yes, Milady. And it was wonderful. I believe I shall take a page out of your book.”
She tilted her head curiously. “How so?”
“I think that I'm going to interact with my servants a little more.”
The blonde woman beamed at him. “Splendid! I love being a good influence! Having loyal and discreet servants is worth its weight in gold. Don't forget that, Dr. Jekyll.”
Jekyll went home in as good a mood as he had come. He was certainly looking forward to New Year's celebration.
How will this year's end will be? Now that everything has changed, he wondered.
“I don't know”, Hyde answered, “But it's going to be awesome, I can feel it!”
The blond chuckled.
“Hey, Jekyll.”
“Hm?”
“I know that I'm grounded and shit, but couldn't you make a teeny-weeny exception for New Year?”
“No, Hyde. If you want to see the fireworks, you can observe them in your ghost form.”
“But Jekyyyyyyll”, Hyde whined.
The older man snorted. “No. But I will go up to the roof balcony with you, I promise.”
“Do you think Utterson would come along?”
Jekyll sighed: “I wish. But Gabriel is acrophobic, so we can forget about that.”
Hyde sighed in disappointment.
That made Jekyll smirk. “Could it be, that you're growing fond of him?”, he teased.
Hyde sneered. “Don't be stupid. I'm not fond of people. His company is just entertaining and – stop laughing!”, he snapped, when his creator began to snicker.
Jekyll couldn't remember the last time he had felt so smug. But it certainly felt psychologically rewarding.
“Sure, Mr. Hyde. Whatever helps you sleep at night.”
Hyde glared harder and muttered something that sounded suspiciously like a profanity.
The Doctor frowned and warned: “Edward Hyde, don't give me reason to expand your house arrest to a month.”
Hyde's reflection flushed with anger. “I hate you so much right now.”
Jekyll's expression softened. “Hey now. Don't be upset. I will let you out for a bit, when we're on the roof. No one will get hurt and you will get to see the fireworks with your own eyes. How does that sound?”
His alter ego calmed down considerably.
Jekyll's house was relatively empty on the 31st December. He had given most of his servants the day off to spend New Year with their families. Only Poole and those of his staff who had no family were still here today.
Lanyon and Utterson would come in the evening and until then, he would stay in his lab with Hyde.
“Hey there”, he said to the mirror as soon as he entered the lab.
His reflection morphed into Hyde.
“Why, good morning”, the brunette greeted sardonically. “Have you been yearning for me, my dear soulmate?”
“Don't flatter yourself”, Jekyll scoffed, even though both knew he was lying.
He looked around the lab. It was messy. And since it was the last day of the old year, this was the perfect opportunity to tidy up. So he went to work.
After about ten minutes, Hyde complained: “Goddammit, Jekyll! It's so boring to watch you tidy up!”
“Well, you can come out and help me”, the Doctor retorted.
“I'm not moving a single finger for you.”
“Lazy bone”, Jekyll muttered and put the clean vials into their respective cabinets.
After half an hour he skimmed over his lab and nodded in satisfaction.
Everything was nice and clean.
Why did I not do this sooner?
“Because you were gone for over a month?”, Hyde supplied.
The blond sighed and sat on the cot in the corner. Then he gestured to the spot next to him.
“Come here and sit with me”, he requested and the brunette stepped out of the mirror.
Jekyll hadn't seen him in such a corporeal form outside of his control in quite a while. He couldn't help but relish in the sight.
Hyde started, when his other self put an arm around him and pushed him down onto his lap.
“Jekyll, what are you-?”
But he relaxed right away, when the blond began to run his fingers through his hair.
Jekyll smiled fondly, when Hyde closed his eyes and began to purr and lean into his large hand.
He can be so adorable …
“You're rather affectionate today”, the smaller man stated.
“I suppose I am”, Jekyll confirmed.
“Why is that so?” It sounded a tad suspicious.
The taller man raised an eyebrow. “Can I not be affectionate without reason?”
“Not towards me.”
The Doctor sighed: “I can't honestly answer that question without starting an argument. And that's not what I want.”
“Is it not?”, Hyde queried.
“No. I don't want to go into the new year with unsettled arguments.”
Hyde cracked a bilious green eye open. “Now I'm all the more curious.”
“Can you guess, what my resolution for next year is?”
The younger man smirked: “What, to get into your lawyer's inexpressibles*?”
Jekyll chuckled: “That too, but it's not what I mean.”
“Oh? What is it then? Don't leave me hanging!”
“I wish to earn your forgiveness.”
Hyde's eyes flew open and he stared up to him incredulously. “Is that supposed to be an apology?!”
“No. Not yet, at least – I know that an apology won't cut it. I want to make up for my treatment of you. However, I will not be taken advantage of”, the older man cleared up.
The latter was added, just in case. Hyde was highly intelligent and had no qualms with taking advantage of others, if he got the chance.
The young man's eyes filled with suppressed anger and a hint of anguish.
Gabriel was right … he furrows his eyebrows just the way I do.
“I can't forgive you. Not like this.”
“I know”, Jekyll replied sadly.
Of course it was too soon, just like the Lady had said.
But maybe someday …
Maybe someday things would be better.
Suddenly Hyde glowered up at him. “Oi! Did I allow you to stop running your fingers through my hair?”, he snarled.
Jekyll chuckled: “Of course not. Do forgive me, my other half.”
And continued to stroke the long, café brown hair under his hand, silently envying the young man for having such beautiful, rich hair.
Hyde purred again, then slowly dozed off.

FAKEOUT! | The hour opens with a video that Jon shot of himself, and it looks like he might be in the apartment he showed Ashley at the end of Episode 10. “Let me just start by saying, I’m sorry. I abandoned you. I know for a long time, I’ve owed you some answers. There’s probably nothing I can say that can make this make sense, except just, I’m sorry, Barbara,” he says. Wait, what?
LIFE AS AN ENDURANCE SPORT | While Delilah is out for a run with her kids, she thinks about running to Katherine for help with the bank’s foreclosure on the house. Apparently Jon leveraged his family’s home against a larger commercial loan, and Delilah signed off on it — though she says she often signed papers Jon told her to, and she had no idea what she was approving. Katherine reassures her she’ll figure it out.
A Million Little Things Recap Season 1 Episode 11The gang is prepping to run a road race to benefit suicide-prevention efforts, but Gary thinks Maggie should sit it out, given that she’s got a chemo round the day before. But she’s determined to complete the run, explaining that among the chemotherapy’s side effects, lacing up her sneakers and pounding the pavement is the only thing that makes her still feel like her. At this point, she’s lost her hair and is wearing a wig; Gary gets a glimpse of her bald head when she doesn’t know he’s looking, and he’s visibly affected by the visual. Soon after, he changes his mind and becomes Running Maggie Superfan #1.
THE TRUTH ABOUT JON | Meanwhile, Katherine lets Delilah know that they’ve gotten a 60-day extension on the foreclosure, and that the commercial loan Jon took out “was for some properties he was underwater on,” Katherine says gently. The amount? $18 million (!), which Delilah now owes, because he used her personal assets to secure the loan. And the bank will take everything, she adds, including the life-insurance payout Delilah was relying on to reclaim her home.
Gary doesn’t believe that Jon would’ve left his family stranded like that. “He had a plan for everything!” he emphatically points out. But Delilah gets very angry very quickly as she notes that she’s been crushed by the weight of her guilt over the affair, thinking it had led Jon to end things, but it turned out he’d created his own mess. She then ejects Gary from the meeting at Katherine’s office.
Gary flashes back to the elevator breakdown that doubled as his first meeting with Rome, Jon and Eddie. Given that Jon is in full corporate d-bag swagger mode, I’m not sure why any of the others would’ve wanted to pursue a conversation with him, much less a lifelong bro-hood. When Gary starts to freak, Jon distracts him by asking who each of their dream dinner companion would be. Eddie says his old music teacher. Rome says filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan. Gary says T. Rutledge, then off the guys’ quizzical looks, points to the certificate posted inside their car: “the guy who inspected this stupid elevator, or failed to,” he notes. Jon sadly says he’d only want to have dinner with his wife and kids, because he works so much, he usually doesn’t get home in time.
WHAT IS ASHLEY UP TO? | Later, Delilah and Katherine are at a bank, trying to get more information on Winthrop Holdings, the shell company that Jon set up. While they wait for copies of documents, Ashley is at the front desk, closing out “the Rutledge account” and taking the money in the form of a cashier’s check made out to her. (Side note: I froze the frame and tried to see how much she was pocketing, but couldn’t see it precisely. It looked like multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars.) As Katherine and Delilah depart, Ashley sees them, but they don’t see her.
By the time the two women return to Delilah’s, it’s almost like they’ve forgotten that one was sleeping with the other one’s husband. But that illusion is shattered when Eddie, who has come home on an off night during the tour to surprise Theo, pops up and demands to know what’s going on with all of the Jon revelations, which he’s heard secondhand from the kids.
Speaking of the kids: Now that Sophie knows what her father was up to, she’s no longer interested in running the race.
DESPERATE TIMES | Faced with the news that Gina’s restaurant may never open, thanks to the financial woes attached to the property, a newly off-his-meds Rome offers to go back to making commercials. Why I Decided to Pursue Respiratory Therapy
If there is one thing people forget to tell you about college, its that you can always start over.
In high school I was big on Crime and Punishment. It was a course I knew about my freshman year of high school that I anticipated three years for. The class was everything I wanted: mock trials, field trips to a prison, and engaging discussions about crime and the American legal system. Yet, what really enticed me was the mind of a criminal. What made them do what they’ve done? Why did they do what they’ve done? I was hooked on the idea, and when I was applying to undergraduate school I knew psychology was the degree program I wanted to be in. I had thoughts about working with criminals in the prison system or working as a psychiatrist. In a sense, I felt like I knew where I was going in life.
Except life has an interesting, almost funny way of messing with you.
In my second year of undergrad I found myself less and less engaged with the material. The information never retained because I never felt myself interested enough in order to do so. College was fun, I had great friends and went to amazing parties, but I couldn’t love the degree plan I was going for. The mystery crime documentaries I used to be so intrigued by were all short-lived interests, and learning about the criminal mind felt like something that was more fun and entertaining when it wasn’t a career. I heard stories about my friends volunteering with crisis centers and telling me how it was difficult not to shoulder the pain they heard while volunteering. I kept asking myself: could I do it? Was there a way that I could become a psychiatrist? Would I be able to stomach the emotions and experiences of criminals? The more I thought about it, the more it dawned on me.
It came to a point that I realized psychology was not the correct degree path for me. If I couldn’t find myself loving the material, finding joy in what I was learning, then it was not worth it. I did not want to be stuck with a degree I couldn’t enjoy and then stuck with a job I knew I wasn’t going to love doing. Although I was already half-way done with the degree program, I knew that I had to switch as soon as possible. Before signing up for my junior year of undergrad, I decided to take a break from college.
It was a difficult decision, especially since my parents were not supportive of it at first. Their mentality was that my degree could land me a job anywhere, but my issue was that I did not want a job but that I wanted a career. I would rather take two years off then to finish two years of a diploma I did not want. Despite it being a tough decision at first, it was the best thing that I could have done for myself. Taking the time to look at my options, explore different careers paths, and just work a normal job made me feel like I had more time than I originally thought. Undergrad is a long four-year journey that makes it feel like if you were to ‘waste’ your time, then you’ll lose that time forever. The decision to stop going to school made me think that I was wasting my time, but I had to remind myself that I was still young and had all the time in the world. People change trajectory all the time, some sooner then others, but its important to know that it is never to late to switch goals in life.
After a year of being on my break, my mother approached me with the idea of becoming a respiratory therapist. I was hesitant at first only because I could not envision myself as someone working with physically ill patients, yet I decided to research the career path just to see what it would entail. The more I researched about the career, the more intrigued I was about it. I was proficient in chemistry and math, but never thought about pursing a STEM career. After hours of research about how to become a respiratory therapist, what they did, and talking to my mother’s coworker who worked as a respiratory therapist I knew that I found a career that I could be excited about.

“Oh, Jesus,” 22E mumbled not unkindly, accepting the flight attendant’s proffered wet wipes and holding out an airsick bag for Len.
Len wanted very badly to go back to the lavatory, crawl directly into the tiny hole of a toilet in there, and die. “Oh, good,” he muttered, “because you know I wanted to mortally embarrass myself today.”
“You okay, pal?”

22E kept rubbing his back. “You doing better?”
Len took a couple deep breaths, then nodded. “Yeah,” he said softly, “suppose so. Thanks for the support.”
“No problem.”
“I didn’t, uh…” Len gestured vaguely. “I didn’t throw up on you, did I?”
“Well, not for lack of trying, I don’t think,” 22E answered wryly. “Why in the world are you flying someplace, anyway? Seems you’d be the kind to cling to terra firma with your nails dug in.”
Len nodded. “The only person on god’s green earth I’d set foot on a plane for is my daughter. My ex-wife and her new husband are taking Jo to San Francisco for her birthday. Can’t remember the last time the ex actually requested my presence anywhere, and, well, it’s my baby girl.”

The key to a good gym referral program is to incentivize referrals in a way that rewards both the referring client and the newly referred client. In other words, if you offer a free training session to a current client if they refer a new client to you then be sure to tell them that their friend who they referred will also get a free training session.
This makes your client feel as if they are sharing a special deal with their friend, and holds more prestige and sense of value, of being an “influencer” with “special access”.
Everyone likes to share and recommend things that make them feel important and “in the know”. A side benefit to this is that your referral source tracking will also improve because those who are referred will feel the need to mention who referred them in order to claim the special deal.
#2 – Friend/Partner Pricing
This is a closely related cousin to a referral program. If you approach all of your current training clients and offer them special discounted pricing to bring a friend or a spouse/partner to train with them then many will say yes (this can also be just the excuse some clients have been waiting for to get their spouse/partner into the gym!).
The big bonus for you as the trainer is that typically they will both workout at the same time, so you’ve just increased your hourly rate without having to train any extra hours.
#3 – Gym Rewards Program
A gym rewards program is a great way to incentivize all of the behaviors that you wish your clients would take on your behalf to act as brand ambassadors and market on your behalf.
You can create an elaborate points schedule where clients can earn different levels of points for doing things like sharing your gym page on social media, liking your gym Facebook page or Instagram page, writing a review on Yelp, checking in to the gym, and of course, the highest point value should be for referring a friend to the gym.
However, sometimes a big, over the top referral program can actually get too complicated and backfire. Sometimes the simplest way to go is just to offer a direct and immediate swap of one action for one reward.
For example, place a table near your door with gym t-shirts, protein bars, energy drinks, etc. along with a sign that says, “Like and share our Facebook page now on your phone for one free item.” You can even train your front desk staff to make this part of your gym’s onboarding process for new members.
#4 – Gym Co-Marketing
Think of a gym co-marketing campaign as a referral program but between professionals/businesses and bi-directional. For example, think about the businesses closest to your gym. Chances are you have other small businesses in your shopping plaza or within walking distance even who are also interested in ideas to get new customers/clients.
If you have a supplement store close by (if your gym doesn’t sell supplements) then befriend the store owner and ask if you can put up some flyers and “special discount” referral cards in their shop, and offer to do the same in your gym.
Some of the same principles apply here as they do with structuring a good personal trainer/gym referral program: the more you can make the referred person and the referrer feel as if they are sharing insider’s access to a special deal then the more successful your co-marketing campaign will be.
The same applies for your too. Ask the shop owner if they can give your members 10 percent off everything in the store and you will feel better about recommending them to your gym clients.
If you really want to take this to the next level then you can hire a dedicated staff member to create, manage, and implement a robust “gym perks” program where you offer your members a large assortment of discounts and savings from many different local businesses, all the while, getting the name of your gym out in the community and increasing the likelihood of other businesses referring new clients to your gym.
If you are desperately wanting to know how to get more referrals for your gym or personal training then this is a great strategy to implement.
A note of caution: This works particularly well if you concentrate on finding other co-marketing partners who offer complementary products/services to your gym members values.
Yes, you can probably strike up relationships with the owner-operators of the local fast food restaurants and get your members discounts on burgers, fries, and pizza, but a better approach for your gym brand might be to talk to local health food stores, healthy restaurants, chiropractors, massage therapists, physical therapists, and other businesses with a healthy image.
#5 – Barter Agreement
An interesting twist on co-marketing is when you partner with other local businesses or service providers to exchange services on a swap/trade basis. For example, you may strike up an agreement with a chiropractor to trade an alignment for a personal training session or a massage therapist to trade a massage for a gym membership.
Don’t be afraid to get creative, and there’s often not a better way of trying out local offerings so you can feel good about what you recommend to your clients, but just be sure to talk to your tax advisor about any applicable tax reporting related to barter agreements.
Now that you’ve hopefully begun to build relationships with other businesses in the community, why not join together and organize a fun event for your community?
A gym has a natural tie-in with any type of community event revolving around the themes of fun, family, health and fitness. Create a community health fair and family fun event.
Offer free food (talk to local restaurants, vendors, and food trucks), blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol  screenings, fun games for the kids, obstacle courses and fitness challenges, boot camp workouts and other fitness competitions, local music, flu shots, giveaways, fundraiser tie-ins with a charity or local cause, and many other ideas are all things that you can feature at your event.
#7 – Professional Referral Network
So, this is a little different than a standard gym client referral program where clients of yours refer new clients to your gym or to your personal training, and it’s also a little different than a co-marketing program where you and other businesses in the area co-promote each other to your members/clients/customers.
But instituting a professional referral network is different enough and important enough that it’s worth singling out. This is one of the best gym membership marketing ideas because if you are intentional about building out this network then you won’t see results overnight, but you will see results for years to come.
A professional referral network is when you actively and intentionally solicit other professionals to refer people to you for personal training. Your goal is to be the first person they think of when one of their clients needs a recommendation for a gym or a personal trainer.
The classic professionals to target include physical therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, doctors, corporate wellness directors (sometimes companies will even reimburse employees for gym memberships and personal training fees), and other similar professionals who routinely encounter people looking to make a change in their health, fitness, and lifestyle. YOU want to be their go-to recommendation.
So, how do you do this? Well, it’s worth taking a page from the classic pharmaceutical sales rep playbook. You need to:
Show up in person
Build the relationship consistently over time
Demonstrate your value (your certifications, credentials, and experience will be very important here, particularly to Doctors and physical therapists who need to trust that they are referring their clients to a competent professional)
Make it fun (could you drop off some goodies and gym freebies at a physical therapists office just like a pill-pushing pharmaceutical rep and likely get great results? You’ll never know until you try.)
Yes, you can win friends and influence people in Doctor’s offices and other professional’s offices.

#8 – Walk the Gym Floor
This might sound low tech, but speaking of winning friends and influencing people, one of the best marketing ideas for fitness classes is to simply walk around the gym, strike up conversations with regular gym attendees, and then invite them personally to attend one of your fitness classes.
Sure, you can hand out a flyer, or tack up a poster on the wall, but there’s something about a personal invitation that will get results that might surprise you. Be sure to position the ask totally from their perspective:
“YOU would love our Zumba class.”
“YOU would be great in our HIIT class. We need some more people that can do those plyometric workouts you are doing.”
The same strategy holds for getting more personal training clients too, of course. Striking up conversations with people in the gym with the intent of upselling personal training sessions have long been a key tactic for personal trainers the world over.
However, beware that you don’t come across as purely self-serving, mercenary, and transactional.
Truly build up a relationship with people, show them that you care, take an interest in what their workouts and fitness goals are, and then when you provide them a laser-targeted personal invitation… they’ll at least be polite when they shoot you down.

Speaking of inviting gym members to try a new class or sign up for personal training, when’s the last time you added a new fitness class, boot camp, or challenge to your gym schedule?
One of the best ways to learn how to promote fitness classes in your gym is to talk to members and ask them what new classes they would be interested in attending.
Yes, I know, a revolutionary idea.
Talking to members and asking them what they want. I get it. Sometimes people don’t know what they want. But most of the time, they do. If you want new fitness class ideas then you’ve likely got an entire block of people milling around your gym right now who would be happy to share their opinions.
Everyone likes to be asked their opinion, and when you have a critical mass of people suggesting a similar type of class, then you have a built-in group of people you can sign right up.
Sometimes you may want to seed your list of potential fitness classes to create with some choices for your members to choose from, but be sure to always leave space for them to suggest their own free form idea. Here is an example:

Did you know that, on average, 1/3 of the members of a gym will cancel every year? This ~30 percent turnover rate means that there is a huge opportunity for additional revenue if you craft a gym marketing campaign aimed at improving retention. One way to do that is to hire great people.
You can have all of the best fitness center systems and processes, but if the people you hire are grumpy, rude, or unwelcoming to guests then your gym will leak people like a sieve.

It’s time that you move beyond just January/New Years gym marketing campaigns. Did you know that 80 percent of people who joined a gym in January of 2012 canceled their membership just five months later? (source).
We all know that January is one of the best times of the years to get new member signups, but if you don’t engage members and reach out to new members throughout the year then your success in January can end up being a revolving door problem for your gym.
Summer is a key time to ramp up your gym marketing.
One of the best summer marketing ideas for gyms is to focus on all of the natural reasons why people start getting motivated to get in shape as summer rolls around: spring break, looking good at the beach, warmer weather = less clothes, cookouts, swimming, vacations, cruises, weddings, class and family reunions, and other special events.

This is one of the best social media marketing ideas for gyms because the offer is so simple: come into the gym on X date and you can work out for free, and train with a trainer for free. Everyone likes free, and everyone understands free.
#14 – Create an Online Workout Group
People are busier and busier. Not everyone that wants to train with a personal trainer has a schedule that will allow them to do so, but launching an online workout is a great way to upsell regular gym members who want more personalized instruction but are unable to work out in-person with a trainer consistently.

Just note that you will often be competing against the (often free) campus rec center so hone your pitch accordingly. That being said, students are ideal candidates for being interested in fitness and if you have amenities and marketing copy that appeal to this demographic then this can be a great way to get an influx of memberships every school year.
Of course, the downside to the student market is that this population tends to be a very transient one so your retention/churn metrics will suffer. Flash sales are great because they incorporate an element of exclusivity and a ticking clock that can compel people to act. Let’s face it, your big, hulking gym isn’t really like a limited edition run of designer clothes or other fashion wear that can legitimately claim to be “sold out”, because today, tomorrow, next week, your gym will still be there.

Now don't get me wrong, I am a Personal Trainer working out of a large commercial gym and I also want to build by business. Gaining access to gym members who have been sold on the virtues and values of personal training certainly makes that job so much easier. But, I would much rather have my clients decide to use a Personal Trainer (preferably me) for valid reasons and with a realistic view of what they can expect to receive in return for their hard-earned dollars. Let's start at the beginning; why is it best to workout with a Personal Trainer? Essentially, there are ten reasons why most people choose to engage a Personal Trainer and they are: 1. You are not seeing results. Many people will begin an exercise regime with a general goal in mind, usually weight loss, and work like crazy for weeks, months and even years without getting any discernible results. A good Personal Trainer will begin your journey with a comprehensive Pre-Exercise Screening questionnaire and will have an in depth discussion with you about your goals, motivation and previous exercise history. Only then, after gaining an understanding of where you currently are and where you want to get to, will they begin formulating an exercise and nutrition plan specifically for you. Included in the pre-exercise screening, will be body weight assessment, girth measurements and possibly even skinfold measurements taken to establish a baseline against which your future progress will be measure. 2. You don't know where to start. No Personal Trainer worth spending your money on will assume that you have any prior knowledge of anatomy & physiology, nutrition or exercise science. The reason is that if we assume that every client is a blank canvas and develop the workouts based on the principles of sound technique and progression, every client has the opportunity to learn the safest, most effective way in which to build their strength, cardio vascular fitness and insure against unnecessary injuries. Most people who join gym don't know how to exercise effectively or safely and there is no-one better to teach you how to do that than your Personal Trainer. A large number of people will download a templated workout from their favourite website or get advice from their "fit" friends. The problem with this approach is that you may not know how to use the equipment safely and the workout has not been tailored to suit your individual needs and/or limitations. 3. You are bored with the same old workouts. I know from personal experience that if you do not change your workout on a regular basis, or add interesting cross-training options into the mix, you become very bored with the workout and are less likely to even attempt to do it. Bang, there goes your motivation. A good Personal Trainer will be continually reviewing your progress, how your body is adapting to the exercise and, assessing your motivation. If any, or all, of these indicators show signs of plateauing or you are less motivated, he will change your routine and add some variety into your workout to keep it interesting and to continually challenge your body. 4. You need to be challenged. If you are like the majority of the exercising population, there will be days when you simply don't feel like pushing yourself to your limits or, you just feel like slacking off. A Personal Trainer will not allow you to bring out the BS excuses to not workout. He will push you to complete that last two reps and encourage you through the set when the weight seems far too heavy. He will be your conscience, your mentor and your cheer squad, but he will not be your Mother. 5. You want to learn how to exercise on your own. Even if you want to exercise on your own, it is a great idea to engage a Personal Trainer for a few sessions to learn the right way to exercise.
