Musical Monday
As you may have noticed by now, one of my favorite things about Mika’s music are his lyrics. I love analyzing every little detail about them and even after countless times listening to each song I still have new thoughts on them all the time and there are things I don’t quite understand.
So I thought why not open questa casa mi(k)a to a discussion! Let’s exchange thoughts, over-analyze together and talk about what a specific song means to us.
I’m kicking things off with possibly my all time favorite song...
Origin Of Love
To me, this is the ultimate love song. It describes a love so powerful that it can't be stopped by anything (not even god himself) and makes you rethink everything you had previously thought to be true.
But I think most importantly, it is an antidote against internalized homophobia. Mika is consciously freeing himself from every negative thing he had been taught about his sexuality. What makes it so perfect is that it isn’t sweet or soft, it is forceful and desperate and angry. It actively calls for action:
Don’t try and stop me!
Your guilty heart, don’t let it break you!
Let’s push their stories aside!
My Questions:
Does the latin part even make sense? What does “machismo” mean? Is it just latin, church-sounding, vaguely religious gibberish?
How would you interpret this lyric:
Well if god is a priest and the devil a slut
That’s a reason for nothing.

Good evening ladies and gentledemons! I have quite a treat for you tonight! Our artist of the evening was a blues and folk singer whose music career began in the redlight district of Shreveport, Lousiana. He was a dab hand at the twelve string guitar and known to be very good with an accordian and harmonica as well. While his musical career began in the in the early 1900s, with his career in Shreveport beginning in 1903, he was not first recorded until 1933, by a pair of song-collectors and early folklorists named John and Alan Lomax. The father and son came across him while he was serving a prison sentence and recorded him singing several traditional prison songs for the Library of Congress. He became involved with their song collecting both as a subject and performer and as a driver for John. This association ended quite bitterly.
Despite his musical tallent and the influence of the Lomaxes, he achieved notoriety, but never prosperity. He began recording commercially in 1935, but the company for which he recorded only ever released his blues songs during his lifetime. He would become known after his death as a folksinger for the numerous traditional song he recorded that were not released during his life. Near the end of his life, he moved to Harlem, New York City, New York. Here, he wrote several songs and finally gained fame as a folksinger and was influential in the dawn of the folk revival that came to influence in the 1940s. He began recording as a folksinger for RCA Victor in 1940 and for the label that would later become Folkways. He traveled to California and had a regular radio show broadcast in New York City by 1949. He even began a tour in Europe that same year, but became ill and was diagnosed with ALS. His final concert was in Texas in 1949, performing with his wife Martha, who was a singer of spirituals herself. He died shortly thereafter.
His work has continued to be influential even long after his death, influencing musicians such as Bob Dylan and Nirvana, who cited him as a primary influence and recorded their own cover of his version of In the Pines. And so, without further adeu, here is Lead Belly, singing the traditional murder ballad In the Pines!

Cân i Gymru 2024
It has just occurred to me that I can actually recreate Cân i Gymru for you all through the power of the Internet and Tumblr and such like. Given that Eurovision is out this year, please enjoy the Eurovision of my people.
The artists are much less important to us than the songwriters. Sometimes those are the same people, but sometimes not. The winners of this contest are the songwriters, though, the artists are just a necessary evil.
So! The entries!
First up! Heno, meaning 'tonight'. The songwriters wanted to write something that would make everyone want to dance :). The artists are therefore a sexy Eurovision-style singer who hits notes I previously have only heard autotuned in Crypt of the Necrodancer, and a funky DJ man. This is the most Eurovision-y song, probably.
Yr Un Fath (The Same Thing), by Jacob Howells! He wrote this one himself. Lovely lad, from Llanelli. A gentle ballad.
Again, singing their own song! These are the songwriters! Exciting. This is Cymru yn y Cymylau (Wales in the Clouds), which is a very nice song about how no matter where they go in the world, they see Wales - and by extension their Welshness - in the clouds, staying with them. A route back home.
Mêl (Honey). Same again, they wrote their own song. This is a song about late stage capitalism and the environment and having hope for the future told through the metaphor of bees. Slight funk/soul vibe. The stage backdrop was increasingly filled with clipart bees.
Cysgod Coed (The trees' shadow). A ballad about lost love and broken promises. The songwriter is teenage girl Efa Rowlands, the singer is classmate Gwion Phillips.
This one felt the most like a Swedish Eurovision entry. The singer is half of Welsh band Lofi Jones, but no one even mentioned that, because he didn't write the song, so it's not about him. The song Pethau Yn Newid (Things Are Changing) instead is about how life is moving too fast and we should appreciate the time we have more, because he's aging and everything is changing and he can't keep up. They probably should have gotten someone older to sing it.
Absolute vocal powerhouse ballad, Ti (You) is part-written and all-performed by music teacher Sara Davies. The lyrics were a love letter her grandfather wrote to her grandmother before he died; Sara then wrote the music for it. The background photos are her grandparents. Her grandmother was actually in the live audience on the night.
And the last one! Goleuni (Lights) is by a pair of songwriters (one music teacher and one West End star) who wanted to write a song of hope for the dark times, because the world is shit but Still We Persist. They're both talented and established songwriters. The performer is a seventeen year old schoolgirl in the class of one of the songwriters.

She saw in the corner of her eye that he walked around the corner into the hallway, but the hallway didn’t lead to the bathroom, so what was he doing?
She walked towards the hallway, leaving her drink behind. He turned again, going into her bedroom
“You’ve been here enough times to know this isn’t the bathroom” She smiled as she closed the door behind her
“Yeah, sorry. I just needed to get away” He explained to her as he sat on the edge of the bed
“It’s fine” She sat down on the bed beside him. She looked into the floor as he still couldn’t keep his eyes off of her
She didn’t know if it was the alcohol or she actually had confidence in her body, but she decided to speak up about her feelings she have had for about him
“I don’t want you like a best friend” She kept looking into the ground. He didn’t say anything “I only bought this dress so you could take it off” She looked up at him
His pupils were bloated. His eyes dark, yet no emotion in the rest of his face. He was fidgeting with his hands
“I want you to carve your name into my bedpost, ‘cause I don’t want you like a best friend” Her eyes were full of horror, awaiting his answer
“Why didn’t you say something sooner?” His words put comfort on her “You have no idea how long I’ve liked you” Knowing he felt the same, eased her horror
“What?” “I was just too scared to tell you. I would rather have you as a best friend then not have you at all” Her hand came to rest on his thigh as he spoke
“Max, you would never loose me, even if I didn’t have the same feelings” She smiled at him as she unintentionally moved her hand further up his thigh
She noticed how his breath hitched. She took away her hand, but he grabbed it before she could get it too far away. He pulled lightly on her arm, pulling her into his lap
His actions made her dress hitch up her waist past her ass. His hands were on her waist as hers were on his houlders
She leaned on, pressing her lips to his. She pulled away briefly, only for Max to smash their lips back together
This time, the kiss wasn’t soft like before. It was hot and heated, all teeth and saliva. Her hands went to his face as his traveled from her waist to her ass
She leaned them back so Max’ back was against the bed. Her lips tried traveling to his jaw, but he kept wanting them on his
Her hand forced his face away from her so she could kiss his jaw and down his neck. He whimpered once she started sucking lightly on his skin

“That’s up for me to decide, pretty boy” He could her smirk into his skin
He bucked his hips up into hers to get some kind of friction. She sunk her teeth into his skin at his actions, making him whine
“Please, I want you so bad. Please” She leaned back as he spoke. He sat back up as well. His hands went under her dress, and he pulled it off of her in one motion
He flipped them over so she was pressed against the bed. He went to the floor at the foot of the bed where her legs hang
He pulled her closer to the edge. He slid her panties down her legs, throwing it where he had thrown her dress
He darted his tongue through her folds, making her moan and grip his hair tight. Her actions made him groan, giving her more pleasure
