Alice Eastwood
Botanist and conservationist Alice Eastwood was born in Toronto in 1859. A self-taught botanist, Eastwood was hired by the California Academy of Sciences, and became the sole Curator and Head of the academy's Botany Department in 1894. She would remain at the California Academy of Sciences for more than fifty years. Over the course of her life, Eastwood collected more than 300,00 specimens, described nearly 400 plant species, and published more than 300 scientific articles. During the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, she ran into the California Academy of Science's building and rescued over a thousand plant species from the collection. Eastwood was also a conservationist who fought to preserve Mt. Tamalpais State Park and the Muir Woods National Monument. There are 17 plant species named after her.
Alice Eastwood died in 1953 at the age of 94.
