'You might expect a season finale to be shrouded in secrecy, with plot points and even the full cast list concealed so as to not to spoil viewers' enjoyment of the climax, but in fact it's the middle instalment of Doctor Who's "mini-season" of 60th anniversary specials that's proving to be the most mysterious.

Even before it aired on Saturday (25th November), we were familiar with the broad strokes of opening episode The Star Beast – an adaptation of the 1980 comic strip of the same name, featuring the cute but not so cuddly Beep the Meep, and reuniting the Doctor (David Tennant) with former companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate).

We've also seen a fair amount come out around the trilogy closer, The Giggle – it'll feature the return of the villainous Toymaker, last seen on television way back in 1966 and now played by Emmy-winning actor Neil Patrick Harris.

Though not officially announced, trailer footage and interview teases have also pointed to appearances from UNIT, their leader Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave) and their scientist advisor Shirley Anne Bingham (Ruth Madeley).

But we know next to nothing about episode two, Wild Blue Yonder, which airs this Saturday (2nd December) – showrunner Russell T Davies has called it "weird" and "scary", but the brief plot synopsis that's been released is impressively vague: "The TARDIS takes the Doctor and Donna to the furthest edge of adventure. To escape, they must face the most desperate fight of their lives, with the fate of the universe at stake."

Besides Tennant and Tate, only one additional cast member has been confirmed – Susan Twist, who'll play a character named "Mrs Merridew".

The key art for the episode (see above) suggests the inclusion of a robot, though it's unclear whether it'll be friend and foe.

The trailer released shortly after broadcast of The Star Beast, meanwhile, also seems to delight in keeping things ambiguous, revealing only that the Doctor and Donna have landed in a mysterious space-age location, where they encounter "life signs" and are menaced by an unseen threat...

Doctor Who fans, of course, abhor a vacuum, so the lack of information about Wild Blue Yonder has sparked rampant speculation. Why the secrecy? What's being hidden?

Fan theories have included suggestions that the episode is set entirely within a TARDIS – with the Doctor's ship landing inside another time/space machine – or that all this cloak and dagger is concealing a huge surprise return, with names put forth including Carole Ann Ford as the Doctor's granddaughter Susan and Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor.

There's also a school of thought that the episode will feature an early appearance from Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor, and even Millie Gibson's new companion Ruby Sunday.

We know for a fact that the events of Flux, the Doctor Who series arc aired in 2021, will be dealt with "very slightly" in the episode, which has led fans to guess at everything from some involvement from The Division to a story set during "the Dark Times" (an age of chaos and monsters that predated the Doctor's reality).

To be clear, all of this is just guesswork at this point. In fact, Tom Kingsley, director on Wild Blue Yonder, has sought to play down the rumours while acknowledging that the plot is "a TOTAL SECRET".

Describing the episode as "weird and exciting", he added: "Fan PSA: the story of Wild Blue Yonder isn’t a secret because there are any surprise returning actors or villains. It’s just because we thought you might find it fun to watch it without knowing what’s going to happen next. Promise!"

Couldn't that rationale apply to any other episode, though? Adventures that weren't/aren't being kept under wraps to the same degree?

Perhaps the biggest clue we have to latch on to comes via David Tennant. Speaking to Total TV Guide, he said: "The second script is unlike any Doctor Who I’ve ever seen.

"I don’t want to give too much away, but I was always aware of the casting that was going to be part of the episode. That was something that Russell was very specific about. I just didn’t imagine it would… manifest itself in the way that it does..."

Could this piece of casting be the cause of all the covertness? If we take director Kingsley at his word that Tennant and Tate will be the only series veterans appearing, then perhaps it's not a returnee we should be expecting but some other familiar face – a big name actor whose casting is yet to be announced? Or just a particular type of performer?

Clearly, whoever it is, or whoever they are, said casting has a significant impact on the plot...

"I love humans," the Eighth Doctor once commented. "Always seeing patterns in things that aren't there," - it does feel, however, as though something is definitely afoot here.

Just three days to wait until the exact nature of that secret is revealed...'

Jo wasn't kidding when they told her that Fiona could be remarkably...direct. Which made her both intimidating and hot. Zade had fantasized about a woman like that for a long time, and had a brief mental flash of Fiona wearing that same impish smile, thigh high boots and nothing else -

Meanwhile, Louis downed one glass after another, and tried to pretend he hadn't heard any of that.

He didn't notice when a tipsy old lady sat down next to him and leaned across the counter.

watching the time meddler so i can be up to date for the mrs merridew* theory and all i can say about the first doctor is… damn he really does look like a teenager who’s trying to act older than his years so they put on this affectation of calling people ‘my dear’ and ‘young man’ to hide the fact that they’re. you know. new to all of this. peak Mum I’m Not A Kid Anymore I’m In Middle School Now vibes. i’m not stupid i know this wasn’t the intention at all when one’s era was airing and he was actually supposed to be seen as an elderly man with authority and gravitas but in hindsight it really does read like “heehee hoohoo i’m an old man (young by time lord standards) cosplaying how i believe an old man should act”. love him

(*a lot of people online are inclined to believe she’s playing “the nun”: she reappears throughout history in a way only a time traveller can; in either the wby or corr script it says “we’ll be seeing more of her”; she insists upon newton sitting under the apple tree ‘until he has a very good idea’ almost as if she’s aware of the repercussions the doctor and donna’s arrival will have on the name of his theory; she asks ruby’s band to play gaudete which is a religious song; and “mrs merridew” has the same initials as meddling monk)

new doctor who trailer, let's go

let's try and get anything out of what they've given us on wild blue yonder

to re-cap from my first trailer break-down post, we've got (from top left to bottom right) the Doctor with his jacket off (since he tossed it down just before zooming around the new TARDIS and didn't have time to grab it on his way out) discovering something in a strange metal-walled place, Donna also being amazed, Donna rushing frantically through a corridor, a hero shot of Donna with a little triangle button thing behind her, a little scene where we establish that something has scared the TARDIS away and Donna is going to kick its arse (over three shots), Dr. Who trapped in a little metal box screaming "NOO" again, and a spooky looking TARDIS

they have...really not given us anything - i'm very excited!!

we start with an ordinary metal room, which the TARDIS then violently spins through, materialising in. (just like in the Children in Need special... why is she doing that now? smashing things up) this gives us that final WBY shot from the specials trailer. we can suspect that this crash landing is because of the coffee incident from TSB

somebody give this man a break! this has got to be just after crashing and rushing out of the TARDIS, hence the smoke everywhere, and the guy just grateful to be alive and safe

then a blackout as creepy music comes in, before we see our time travellers snooping around a blue-lit room. those things with the windows on them, I'm thinking stasis chambers of some sort? but what's inside? the lights that flicker in the next shot are in this same room. check out that grille on the left hand side of the first shot, it looks like the thing the Doc was banging against in the specials trailer

Donna asks, very scared and clearly in the first room they arrive in, "where are we?" - this is presumably coming just after the TARDIS has disappeared and before the "kick its arse" line

Ominous shot of a grubby vent, which we've seen in the very first shot of this trailer above and to the right of the first door, with a creepy ticking/clicking noise... something is watching them?

"Oh, life signs!" - we recognize this chair and room from the specials trailer! this comes straight before the shot when he stands up and they both look amazedly at something. that'll be the life signs then. probably what's being held in those stasis chambers

a door slams in Donna's face in a dark and green place - and another one of those grilles - this might be around the time Donna is running through her colour-coordinated corridor

"Doctor!" "Donna!" while Tenteen is in a bright red and scary room

and then a further quick shot of the shouty "NOO" room

so obviously these two are going to get separated in this unfamiliar place, after discovering there are "life signs" somewhere on board

which leaves us wondering, "what are they?" (a line of dialogue laid over what is clearly a scene taking place in the first room, this is probably the two of them watching as the TARDIS absconds)

alright, RTD you've done a very good job of giving us absolutely nothing on this one and I have to respect that.

we do know (from Tardis Wikia) that there's a character called Mrs. Merridew played by Susan Twist, the episode is directed by first-time DW director Tom Kingsley, and the TARDIS has left because of HADS

also, from this promo image, we have this little robot guy, and a big triangular corridor with piston-looking things. is the robot guy Mrs. Merridew? why is he all Rusty? why is he so cute? it sort of seems like he could be the one making the ticking noise, and he is probably the one caring for whatever life signs are being held in the stasis chambers... maybe it's a long-haul star cruiser type thing à la The Ark in Space?

then we have the Target cover, which shows us the little guy again, as well as Donna and the Doctor in what looks like a golf cart. easy transport for getting around an unmanned space station, maybe?

Oh yeah, we also have this clip shown at the end of the Doctor Who Unleashed episode, which gives us these amber-coloured banks of drawers of somethings, one of which the Doctor grabs, "if we move one up..."

"ugh, is that stuff dangerous?" Donna asks as what looks like a misshapen honeycomb drips. "No," says the man who should really still be recovering from regeneration sickness before giving it a sniff and a lick (hello 13)

and then definitely deciding "no"...

...and as he tries to put it back, he gives a little cough and starts falling backwards

so what does this leave us with? the Doctor and Donna are abandoned on a spaceship/station/underwater bunker that doesn't see a lot of use but is the site of Hostile Action which makes the TARDIS fuck off. they go snooping around to see what's up and find a bunch of rooms with exciting different colour palettes, flipping on lights and licking alien honey as they go. they discover the life signs that are being kept alive in the bowels of this ship/station/bunker before being separated. maybe they can still hear/see each other somehow? one of them discovers the rusty little guy and maybe the other discovers Mrs. Merridew? they have a daring escape on a golf cart and manage to get the TARDIS back through the power of the U.S. Air Force

and it's "unlike any Doctor Who episode ever"!

His sister was gonna kill him for this, but Aster, the cautious one of the pair, just didn’t feel comfortable with her plan. He wanted to find their real dad as much as she did, but he wasn’t sure that messing around with magic lamps and genies was the best way to go about it. What if something went wrong?

Coward, a little voice inside his head (that wasn’t Nova’s) whispered. He suddenly felt ashamed, but it was too late to back out now.

Kate: “Of course, honey, you can ask me anything. What’s up?”

Aster: “Well, um...it’s about the magic lamp. Mom, is it really true? There’s a Genie inside it and everything?”

Kate felt as though a lump of ice had settled in the pit of her stomach. 

Kate: “How did you find out about that?!” 

The question was superfluous; she knew how, and Aster’s guilty look confirmed it.

Aster: “Sorry, we just heard you thinking about it, we didn’t mean to - you’re not mad, are you?”

Hoo boy.

Not for the first time, Kate was confronted with her children’s strangeness. She had trained herself to guard her thoughts around them, as Leann had suggested, although not well enough, it seemed. It was that damned lamp and the Genie’s insinuations - they had distracted her!

Kate: “No, I’m not mad. You...haven’t messed around with it, have you?!”

The lamp was inside a cardboard box in the shed and the shed was locked, but an enterprising child could find their way to it.

Aster: “Nooo! We don’t even know where it is! Nova wants to find it, though.”

At least they hadn’t plucked that bit out of her mind.

Kate: “Aster, this isn’t a toy! I don’t know how it works, but I do know it could be very dangerous!”

Aster: “I know, it’s just...we thought...maybe we could get the Genie to take us to meet our dad. Y’know, the Pollination Technician?”

Kate: “Oh, honey...look, I’ll try to find out more about it. Ask Mr Merridew, if there’s anyone in town who knows about magical artefacts, it’s him. But in the meantime, please promise me you won’t go looking for it on your own!”

Aster: “Okay.”

She would need to have a serious conversation with them both, Kate thought that evening as she tucked her sleeping son into bed. About the lamp, but also about their desire to find out more about where they came from which seemed to be eating them up. 

She would move the lamp into the safebox straight away, the one with the combination lock, where she kept all dangerous building tools and materials. Better safe than sorry.
