the tonal whiplash is jarring from the way tumblr (and reddit refugees) talk about the submersible vs the way twitter, the news, and the government talks about it
like yeah we’re making fun of it but we still recognize it’s a horrible way to go out…they still (mostly) brought this on themselves tho
on the other hand, everyone else is like “it’s a tragedy, we need to divert all our resources and attention to this specific situation, if you don’t feel extreme sympathy and kinship for these people then you’re a terrible person”
the best example I can think of that shows what I’m talking about is how we all think it’s incredibly funny that the stepson of one of the billionaires on board went to a Blink-182 concert during search efforts while most people on twitter were clutching their pearls like “oh, he doesn’t care, how horrible that’s he’s continuing to live his life and not pray these poor, rich souls”
and ik if someone said this on somewhere like twitter people would accuse them of putting one cause above others but seriously, what about literally anything else happening, like the thousands of migrants lost at sea that are being overlooked because of these billionaires who absolutely knew the risks when they agreed (also, the only cause in this situation was a lost cause from the start, that is, if we’re gonna call anything to do with billionaire lifestyles a “cause”)
anyways,
sink the rich
yes, human empathy and all that but billionaires aren’t people and you’re not a horrible person for laughing at or making fun of this situation where the odds, nature, and literally everything else that could be were absurdly stacked against these five from the beginning

honestly, that whole submarine situation is awful. like, yeah, they were stupid and shouldnt have gone, but i dont think that necessarily means they deserve to die a slow and agonizing death by asphyxiation at the bottom of the ocean, either.
and the whole idea of being stuck in a cramped metal tube essentially waiting for your oxygen to run out sounds like the plot to a particularly cruel episode of the twilight zone. like that's gotta be up there as one of the worst ways to die

“Intellectual neutrality is not possible in a historical world of exploitation and oppression.”  Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza
Rishi Sunak invited the British people to judge his fitness to be Prime Minister on the outcome of five pledges. One of these pledges was to stop asylum seekers crossing the Channel on small boats.
"...we will pass new laws to stop small boats, making sure that if you come to this country illegally, you are detained and swiftly removed." (Rishi Sunak: January 2023)
The people behind the small boats crossing, the people smuggling gangs, have been described by the Home Office as “heinous criminals and organised criminal networks.”
Defending her Rwanda Deportation Scheme to discourage illegal migrants, Suella Braverman, Home Secretary said:
“We want to ensure that people understand they shouldn’t make the journey in the first place because they will be removed if they do so. That will stop the people-smuggling gangs."
All very laudable Ms Braverman and definitely a vote winner for the Tory Party. Such tactics worked brilliantly during the Brexit campaign. We all remember the slogan “take back control of our borders”. It was powerful then and it is powerful now. Unfortunately, the slogan has turned out to be totally hollow, as hollow as Rishi Sunak's and Suella Braverman's pledge to limit migration.
While all the headlines concerning migrants centre on illegal migration, overseas workers are pouring into Britain by the back door, many of them the victim of legalised people traffickers.
This is a headline from one week ago:
“Modern slavery helpline calls surge from care staff."  (BBC News: 22/10/23)
Unconscionable businesses have been recruiting staff from overseas to work in the care sector, with many of these workers being  charged thousands of pounds  for that privilege.
“The cost of sponsorship is a few hundred pounds, which is met by most care companies… a few unscrupulous employers and agents are charging workers as much as £25,000, adding interest and deducting the debt from their wages.” (BBC News: 22/10/23)
How this “legal” trafficking of migrants differs from that of the illegal Channel crossing traffickers is hard discern. In both cases migrants are being used to line the pockets of unscrupulous gangs. What is more, many of the legally sanctioned migrants that go on to look after our elderly and sick relatives are totally untrained.
According to the National Care Association, over 60,000 overseas workers have been recruited in the past year, leading to many untrained staff being sent to care for our  old, sick, and vulnerable citizens. What is more, many of these migrants are being forced to work excessive hours as well as having to pay massive recruitment fees.
Unison found that migrant workers were required to be on permanent call, had to work 19-hour shifts without a break, and had wages withheld. (Guardian: 10/07/230
The government response to this shameful situation was to say that those operating illegally “COULD” face prosecution.
Not WILL face prosecution but COULD face prosecution. So while my and your vulnerable relatives are being “cared" for by an exploited, modern-day slavery workforce, many without the skills to do so, the government will consider whether to prosecute those responsible or not.
Meanwhile, the people traffickers organising the illegal Channel crossing continue to be castigated as “heinous criminals” and “organised criminal networks” which Rishi Sunak and Suella Braverman have "vowed" to stop.
Such a shame they don’t apply the same moral outrage and indignation when it comes to the businesses exploiting migrants working in our care sector.
I know what my judgement is on Rishi Sunak's fitness to be Prime Minister.

You gotta love british tories, the ones who always loved to think of italy as part of PIIGS (portugal, italy, ireland, greece, spain…yes that’s their name for these country). Now they are commenting the recent arrivals of migrants in italy in terms defending europe from the “INVASION OF AFRICANS”. Oh my oh my!!! Suddenly they love europe. Same ones who wanted brexit? Same ones who call south europe a financial burden? Same ones who said italians and greeks can only be waiters in england?
I wish southern europeans had more pride and understood there is ALWAYS someone southern than someone else. that they are also considered south of the world, just luckier to actually be on the mainland of western capitalism.

not to make light of a pretty horrific fate but oceangate kind of sounds like something Jordan Peele would write and the fact that it’s a real thing that actually happened is crazy

I recently switched from Reddit to Tumblr and so far I'm really liking Tumblr. The two platforms are similar in a lot of ways but each also have a distinct feel to them. I am really enjoying the community that Tumblr has and it's definitely a lot less aggressive (I don't know if that's the right word but I can't think of a better one) than reddit. The main thing about Tumblr that's giving me the most amount of culture shock as a reddit refugee is definitely the vastly different attitude towards spoilers. Reddit is hardcore about not spoiling media that has recently come out but Tumblr is absolutely lawless in that regard. I'm glad I know now. Besides that, my transition from Reddit to Tumblr has been relatively smooth. If anyone has recommendations on how to prevent things from being spoiled on here, I'd really appreciate it
