千葉県
Japanese Prefectures: Kantō - Chiba
都道府県 (とどうふけん) - Prefectures of Japan
Learning the kanji and a little bit about each of Japan’s 47 prefectures!
Kanji・漢字
千 ち、セン thousand
葉 は、ヨウ leaf, lobe
県 ケン prefecture
関東 かんとう Kantō, region consisting of Tokyo and surrounding prefectures
Prefectural Capital (県庁所在地) : Chiba City (千葉市)
Tumblr media
Chiba lies on the Bōsō Peninsula on the east coast of Tokyo Bay, about 20 miles (30 km) southeast of central Tokyo, and boasts many international facilities such as Narita International Airport, known as the gateway to Japan); Makuhari Messe, one of the most prominent convention centers in Asia; Kazusa DNA Research Institute, a world leader in cutting edge research; and Tokyo Disney Resort, with two theme parks that draw in 30 million patrons each year. It also boasts beaches for swimming, surfing, and diving and was the location for the first Olympic surfing games. Historically, Chiba was a castle town controlled by the Chiba family in the 12th–15th century, and during the Edo (Tokugawa) period (1603–1867) it served as a post-station town for several major roads. After the construction of a railway connecting it to Tokyo, the town began to grow in the second half of the 19th century.
Recommended Tourist Spot・おすすめ観光スポット Mt Nokogiri - 鋸山
Tumblr media
Mt. Nokogiri - Hyaku-Shaku Kannon carved into stone cliff
Mt. Nokogiri is named for the zigzag shape of a traditional handsaw that its topography resembles. Along with Mt. Kanozan and Mt. Kiyosumi, Mt. Nokogiri is one of Chiba's three most famous mountains. It stands at 330 meters high and features a grand lookout point as well as a temple complex containing one of Japan's largest Buddhas. The mountain is bare granite and has been a quarry since the Edo Period, providing stones for many of Tokyo's most iconic sites, such as Yasukuni Shrine and Waseda University. You can reach the top by an easy hike or via a ropeway to the top. Hell Lookout (地獄のぞき) is a lookout point at the top of the mountain that hangs over the edge of the cliff and offers a stunning view of Tokyo Bay, the Pacific Ocean, and the distant forests and hills of the Boso Peninsula, and on clear days, Mt. Fuji.
At the southern base of Mt. Nokogiri is Nihonji Temple (日本寺), an officially designated Important Cultural Property. There's a stairway leading from the top of the mountain down to the vast, picturesque Soto Zen Buddhist temple that dates back 1300 years and is still used to train young monks today. A giant daibutsu, or Buddha statue, is carved into the granite on the side of Mt. Nokogiri about midway up the mountain. It is 31 meters high and one of Japan's largest Buddhas, even larger than Kamakura's famous daibutsu at Kotokuin Temple. The statue was built to pray for world peace and most of the statue was carved over three years beginning in 1780.
In addition to the giant daibutsu, there are around 1500 small statues of various Buddhist deities around the temple grounds. Unfortunately, many of the smaller statues were beheaded during the anti-Buddhist movement that accompanied the Meiji Restoration, but there are ongoing efforts to repair them. This part of Nihonji was a spiritual sanctuary built over 21 years in the 18th century by craftsman Ono Kangoro and his students. Towards the top of the mountain stands a 30-meter tall Hyaku-Shaku Kannon, depicting the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. Carved in 1966 into a stone cliff, it is dedicated to those who died in wars, of sickness or in accidents. The Kannon is also worshiped as a protector of transportation due to its protected location surrounded by rocks.
Regional Cuisine - 郷土料理 Sangayaki - さんが焼き
Tumblr media
Sangayaki (source)
Namerou and sangayaki are well-known Chiba dishes, especially along the Bōsō Peninsula. Namerou (なめろう) is a dish usually made of minced horse mackerel and sardine mixed with miso, perilla leaves, and leek. When grilled and wrapped in perilla leaves, it is called sangayaki (さんが焼き). The name "namerou" may have come from the fact that namerou is so good that you want to lick your plate clean (nameru means to lick). The name "sangayaki" may be from the fact that the fishermen ate the dish along a river tributary, or sanga, and the word yaki means to grill (like yakisoba or yakitori). Namerou can be cooked in other ways, such as being shaped and grilled like a burger, or being coated in breadcrumbs and fried.

cruisequarries PART TWO
PART ONE What did we get up to yesterday? 2018? Okay. I will put everything behind a spoiler cut again (there are more pictures/a video today).
Actually, let's rewind just a little, for some Fallout premiere pictures just because.
Paris, July 12th:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
London, July 13th:
Tumblr media
Seoul, July 16th (according to the designer's website, the hanbok Heather is wearing was designed as a wedding dress, mmhmm)...
Tumblr media
I love this picture because they're making those faces at Chris. Here's the bit of Tom making Heather cry in Tokyo:
I highly recommend listening to Tom & Chris commentary track on Fallout, which starts with McQ introducing himself as the writer/director and then Tom introducing himself - as McQ's friend. After the Fallout press tour wraps up, work starts in earnest on Top Gun: Maverick, which Tom and McQ have been discussing - idly, on McQ's part - for years now. "Our relationship is one long conversation about movies," indeed.
Tumblr media
While TGM is filming, pre-production is also happening on MI:DR, which McQ has signed on to direct. (These two are usually juggling at least two projects at a time, and really it's probably more like five projects at a time.)
In January of 2019, they're all back in LA so Tom and McQ can pick up some awards.
Tumblr media
The McQuarries also go to a premiere and look fantastic (I love McQ's suit):
Tumblr media
Tom and McQ go to Ukraine to scout Dead Reckoning locations later in 2019, meet President Zelenskyy, and McQ gets to put his arm around Tom for once instead of their usual other way around.
Tumblr media
OH NO I ALMOST FORGOT - at the end of 2019, Tom took the whole McQ clan with him to Las Vegas to see Lady Gaga and ask her to write the TGM song. [cries in 'that's his family']
Tumblr media
Production ramps up on DR - and then unfortunately, as we all know, COVID. Most of the cast and crew were in Venice when everything shut down, but Tom hadn't arrived yet.
Production resumes in Rome in October (their production struggles/trying to keep everyone employed/Tom rightfully yelling at people to follow protocols because a lot of jobs depend on them is all well documented), and then moves to Venice. Heather and the dogs are also part of this traveling band.
Tumblr media
This isn't six feet apart, dudes...
Tumblr media
Production breaks for the holidays, and resumes in Abi Dhabi for the airport/desert sequences, and also one of my favorite pictures of Tom and Heather, just for her expression.
Tumblr media
Train sequence filming in Yorkshire in April of 2021, that's Heather in the blue coat:
Tumblr media
DR production then breaks for a bit over the summer so Tom can take all his friends to Wimbledon, go to several car things, and make McQ watch football (the soccer version).
Tumblr media
DR filming resumes in the fall/winter. Heather goes with to South Africa and they rent out what is basically an adults-only hotel (and save it from having to close!), for part of their stay. I love this picture because Gypsy looks so long-suffering:
Tumblr media
OKAY IT'S 2022 NOW, time for the Top Gun: Maverick premiere tour to start - finally! (Do any of these people SLEEP? No. I think it's well-documented that Tom Cruise does not sleep, which is part of what makes him Tom Cruise, but also this means he calls McQ at two in the morning to talk about movies. There's a podcast somewhere where McQ says he thinks Tom might sleep "between the 2:05 email and the 2:40 email", or something along those lines.) (After getting back from South Africa, there was a bunch of test screening stuff for TGM, which is why there are those parking garage pictures. Wouldn't the movie be done, you'd think, since it was supposed to be out in 2020? COVID gave them a reason to tinker with it even more.) The San Diego premiere on the USS MIdway (all the McQs were there, but there aren't any good pictures):
Tumblr media
Then Tom went to Mexico, and McQ went home to London for a few days before Tom returned, and they went to the Royal Windsor horse show together.
Tumblr media
THEN EVERYONE WENT TO CANNES. Sorry I have just a shitty screencap with a watermark here but alas tumblr only lets you put one video per post. Tom and McQ stopped to get their picture taken en route to the actual photocall and Tom made Heather come back and be in the pictures with them. There is video here.
Tumblr media
Cannes, of course, was amazing. I have garbage homemade gifs but they're too big for tumblr (also they're garbage) but all the Cannes red carpet footage is available on YouTube, here and here. (Worth it for Heather, tbh.)
Tumblr media
They went straight from Cannes - on Tom's helicopter - back to London for the Royal premiere. Where the McQuarries looked amazing and McQ wore his McQ shoes.
Tumblr media
And the after party, because heaven forbid they not all ride in the same car:
Tumblr media
And then the McQuarries got a slight break, while Tom went to do more TGM press. But he was back in London by the end of June, and they went on what can only be described as a string of dates. First, they went to the Rolling Stones concert at Hyde Park.
Tumblr media
McQ was on Tom's other side, but he's only visible in video (the Daily Mail might be garbage but they do come through with the media).
Then Tom and Heather went to The Eagles show at Hyde Park:
Tumblr media
And they all went to see Adele - also at Hyde Park. (The woman in the pink sweater is Tom's CAA agent Maha Dakhil Jackson - I found the picture where you can see Heather over Tom's shoulder.)
Tumblr media
Then for Tom's birthday, they went to the F1 British Grand Prix (with some other TGM folks, but they aren't three steps behind Tom like the McQuarries are).
Tumblr media
Oh no, we're not done. Tom takes Heather to Wimbledon, where she holds his sunglasses (not visible in this picture).
Tumblr media
McQ did not go with, as he was recording a Light the Fuse podcast - which he surprise-dialled in a bunch of DR folks - and his final surprise was Tom. Who was still at Wimbledon with Heather. McQ calls Heather to get Tom, and Heather plays dumb and is like, "oh I don't know where he is, did you try calling him?" and Chris says he already told the podcast guys that they were together. So Tom does his segment from the car he's in with Heather, and his part is only supposed to be like ten minutes but he talks for about forty-five and this includes telling the world they basically all live together. Then they went out to dinner!
Tumblr media
And the next day they all went to Wimbledon with Maha and her husband.
Tumblr media
I'm stopping here because this is already SO LONG and 2023 is going to be wild just by itself! PART THREE

Can you please tell me about Chicago? How do I get there? Is it really filled with people just like me? My dream is to move to Chicago but I don't know where to start
I suppose it depends on what kind of person you are! But Chicago is full of many varied kinds of people so I think most folks who come here eventually find a niche to fit into.
As for getting here, well, we are a shipping and transportation hub, so the city is your mollusc. We've got two airports, Midway and O'Hare, an Amtrak station which also has a bus hub, and several fine interstate roads that will bring you here by car!
Chicago is a lot of different things. I worry for our future; we're losing population from the city, which tends to lead to economic struggles. But we have very strong manufacturing industries (consumer packaged goods such as fast fashion, prepackaged foods and beverages, cleaning products, etc are big in Chicago and very stable industrially speaking) and we consistently fall into a peer group that includes New York, Los Angeles, and Houston in terms of size, wealth, and productivity.
We have problems; there's a lot of gun violence, particularly in the disadvantaged and traditionally African-American neighborhoods on the south side, our police force is...bad, and we have very high cost of living generally. Our taxes are bananas high and don't seem to generally go towards improving things for the most needful of us. But we have pretty strong unions, we have wonderful museums and tons of public events in the summer, and we are doing our best, as much as we can. We have a lot of institutions of higher education (and also Hamburger University, lol) and as Urbs In Horto, the City in the Garden, we have many beautiful parks. We are secretly a foodie's paradise.
So come to Chicago! We need people, we have good food and nice things to look at, and the housing is still mostly affordable.

“Seriously mom I only just arrived in Seoul, you don’t have to call me every five minutes.” Damin would say with a slight change of tone being all nervous, her mother on the other line would come up with many excuses such as: ‘come on you never were in Seoul! You don’t know the place, I do! Let me help you around.’ As if she were there in person.
Damin sighs looking over at the taxi that stops in front of her, the driver helping with the luggage from the busy airport, Damin getting in the car. “Mom sorry I have bad signal—ahhh? You’re cutting off bye bye!” She tells hanging up, sighing. Her mother is really protective.
The driver gets inside the front driver seat, looking at the girl as he turns around. “Are you off to the Seoul NCT Skating Camp?” The driver said up front, Damin nodding. “Yes, I am sir.”
“Where did you come from?” The driver asked, the vehicle stopping at the red lights signalling the road. Damin durning the drive was mainly quiet, unless spoken to. “Canada.” He wows as he taps the stirring wheel. “Wow long way! Are you here for the skating competition in December?”
Damin would nod upfront, she shifts forward speaking in more excitement with tone. “Sir do you perhaps know about the skating upcoming competition and World Cup?” The driver’s voice hissed as if it were obviously the most important thing to know if you’re living in Korea.
“Of course! Everyone who lives in Korea watches the skating program the most. How about when the time comes in December I shall cheer you on?” The driver said, Damin laughing a little. “I’d appreciate the support sir!”
The drive weren’t long till the large central training campus was shown, the taxi driver stops midway, the driver getting out to help Damin with her luggage. They bid goodbye and the girl was now officially alone again, standing in front of a centrepiece building with three floors and a wide static roof design. There was a dorm building to the right side much further away with a car park too.
There is a long gate that closes and opens between the timing 8am to 12am. Damin took some time adjusting and observing her surroundings outside, until she finally walks with the luggage moving next to her.
Entering the building she was welcomed with a stuffy warm energy, the summer heat hitting Damin much more than Canada’s weather that has lots of rain lately there; She felt a person rush to Damin on the right side.
“Oh Damin?” The man approaches,, looking around his early twenties, wearing a light white gym comfy tracksuit, light brown soft silky fluffed hair and tannish skin practically floating with clear smooth canvas without any blemishes. The man shows a toothy grin. Damin bowing her head. “Hello, who are you..?” She softly asks, she most definitely doesn’t know this guy for sure.
“I am Baekhyun, your trainer for the next six months.” He sees the young girl immediately bow in a ninety degree angle, Baekhyun witnessing the many eyes watching the girl and him so he kindly brings Damin to face him. The eccentric girl smiling ear to ear with polite and respect. Byun Baekhyun is known for his astonishing creative skating programs and dances, he himself made a new pathway for the sport when no one took it seriously in the past.
He’s one of the greatest skaters and teachers in Damin’s eyes. “Teacher! I’m your biggest fan and- it’s a pleasure to meet you.” Damin would say again, Baekhyun was most definitely caught off guard now if he wasn’t before. He shyly smiles looking down, “yes yes, now don’t cause me a scene because people are already watching us.” Baekhyun mutters, dragging the young girl away from the people’s eye.
“Anyways, now that we’re somewhere more quiet. How was your flight?” Baekhyun wonders, it was a long flight for sure . Damin remarks very nonchalantly, it was pretty easy when you sleep the entire flight away in a second. “It was alright, I slept the entire thing away.”
“You’re definitely not sleeping tonight then.” Baekhyun adds in with a small banter, Damin nodding admiringly. The two bring themselves to the huge ice rink, Damin wowing at the large rink of ice with multiple skaters on it already moving at such high speed.
Baekhyun saw Damin’s face glow up with happiness and excitement, her eyes forming a large O shape, her mouth gaping at the sight of the new area where the cold temperature is like a second home to her and the skating shoes are like her second true feet . He pats Damin’s back in friendly manner.
“Welcome to your new ice rink. Look to your left there are skating shoes, find your size and put them on. Join the others at the rink, they’re all nice people.” Baekhyun explains forward, he didn’t need to tell the girl twice though because she was five steps ahead, putting on the shoes.
He walks away with a short smile at the eager fresh addition to the new team.
The four skaters huddle in the distance whispering and chattering as they observe the new girl who was focusing on the shoe laces of the skating equipment. Jungwoo was spying the most at the new girl. “You see her? Doesn’t she look so cool?” He asks his friend, Doyoung.
The rabbit man side eyes Jungwoo. “You say that about everyone, Jungwoo.” Doyoung responds with suspicious eyes, Jungwoo scoffing. “Pfttt, so? I bet she’s cool.” The third boy skating forward in the middle, pushing himself in between the two older boys hums cheerfully. “I heard she’s from Canada just like me.” He brags forward.
“Honestly no one asked Mark.” The final boy from afar vaguely spoke out. Causing the huddle to go silent and break into awkwardness. Despite the boys being new to each other, there was this one person who no one really got on with. That person going by the name, Lee Haechan.
Doyoung turns to the boy from afar who loops in the air, skating around the huddle instead of joining them. Doyoung speaking with inviting tone. “What do you think about the new skater?”
“Not much.” Haechan claims with a shrug to his shoulders, skating away soon enough further in the ice rink.
Damin took a deep final breathe as she eyes the ice, the first steps of coming on a new ice rink is like a new feeling of biting into a newly type of food you’ve never tasted. To her, using a new ice rink always has a different vibe. This rink, was exciting and joyful. Once those metallic rails holding the skating shoes hit the ice, her body starts to sway left and right like a sea rocking forth a shore in a quick pace. Damin leaping round smoothly about the wide and large round ice rink like a ball buzzing through.
The three boys in the middle would watch the girl jump midway the ice and land on two feet, swirling like a strawberry in a hot warm bubbly chocolate pool. The new skater did not stop there, because when Jungwoo thought she ended showing off, Damin was doing a front leap backflip, successfully skating forward again on feet, coming to the middle once again.
Jungwoo gasps as his hands clap. “You see what did I tell you! She’s cool!” The white hair boy skates forward leaving Doyoung, the older man following behind Jungwoo. Damin was met with two men approaching with a warm smile.
“Hey! Just wanted to say you’re pretty amazing so far. I’m Kim Jungwoo, Seoul’s fastest skater as of right now.” Jungwoo would tell with his hands upfront, Damin shaking his hand lightly. “Wow you’re the guy from Tv who finished within just a minute and twenty seconds his program.” She gawks, it was such a wide achievement amongst the industry.
She’d turn to the black hair man who reaches forward his hand with a half innocent smile. “Kim Doyoung.”
“Kim doyoung..” Damin would repeat, shaking his hand tightly. “Wait you’re— the guy who performed Havana in japan 2016 and won first place!”Damin awed, she met her idols thanks to this opportunity. She’s not regretting this at all.
Doyoung speaks. “Yeah that’s me! I’m surprised you know a lot.” He greets again before he lets go off the handshake, Damin noticing the other guy coming forth with the most uninterested expression.
Jungwoo sighs. “That boy over there is Lee Haechan.” Damin looking over to the boy looking similar to her age skating, his body was light as a feather as well as elegantly pushing against the air and chunks of ice that flew in the air, his reddish brown hair standing out with the blue-cold colours, he twists about until a little bit of his stomach gets revealed from the oversized black shirt he wore.
Damin admires in silence, he was beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to watch skate. “He’s not the greatest person to speak with, so don’t take it to heart at whatever he says.” Jungwoo explains.
“Isn’t he the one who won golden medals in the winter competitions three times in a row?” Damin ponders between the two men who in unison agree. “Yeah, that’s him. He’s the new rising star who hasn’t been beaten yet.”
“My goal is to win the golden medal this season, i’ll do anything to win.” Damin speaks, the two men wowing in respect to the determination. She will have to beat Haechan though, and he isn’t easy.
“You’ll do anything to win, did you say?” The voice speaks behind them causing the three to flinch and turn around, Jungwoo slipping on the ice landing on his back. Haechan glaring down at the three, especially at the girl. “I’m not planning to lose to a noob.” He’d tell in the most groused voice, looking down at Damin already.
The girl glares back as she skates forward to Haechan, the two figures standing in front each other with the same expression; dislike, glaring daggers and rivalry sparking already. Doyoung and Jungwoo watching from afar, as he got help from the older man to help him stand up. Haechan smirks at the girl with an arrogant smile. “Okay, I accept the competition. Try to beat me in December, because I’m certain you’re going to lose miserably in front of thousands of people.”
Damin sassed immediately as her soft voice hit a nerve within him. “I don’t think i need to try, you almost came last to Na Jaemin last season.”
Doyoung’s mouth literally drops to the ice ground beneath then, Jungwoo flinching at the scariest pissed off expression he’s ever seen Haechan make. She hit the most sensitive insecure spot inside the young boy. Haechan growls a little, about to say something.
But someone finally interrupts. “Alright Skaters huddle here!” Baekhyun shouts, whistling to call them over where he’s skating with his shoes. Haechan glaring down at Damin. “You’re lucky he came out.” he said before sliding away, going to Baekhyun.
Doyoung looks at Damin whispering. “You certainly have war now with Haechan if you didn’t before.” Damin shrugs unbothered, she stated her opinion. She thinks Jaemin should’ve won the golden medal.
“Oh well, what’s he going to do that will make me living here hell?”
Little did she know she’s foreshadowing the future where he will legitimately make living here hell for her.

xxix: Last Words
Peter moved away from the hug, he stopped midway.
"Woah! Are you taller? Why do you look taller?"
She moved away. "Let's focus on the fight—"
Kurt teleported to her side, causing Peter to yelp. "You must be the boyfriend!"
He stared at Nightcrawler with his mouth wide open. "Who are you?"
"I'm Mimi's best friend!" He grabbed Peter's hand and shook it. "You must be so confused right now— Just you wait, buddy, it's about to get worse!"
He teleported out of sight, Cat wished to strangle him.
"W-What?" Peter looked at her. "Who was that?"
Steve shouted from some point at her right.
"Anyone see an ugly brown van out there?"
"Yes!" replied the Valkyrie. "But you're not gonna like where it's parked!"
"We'll talk later," She told Peter.
"Yeah," He nodded. "Yeah, okay. Good luck! Love you!"
He didn't wait for her to say it back, perhaps he thought he would hear it once it was all over.
He would not.
Copycat ran to the opposite side and saw Clint running with the gauntlet, she teleported and shielded him from incoming attacks.
"This is the second time I save your ass!"
"I didn't ask you to!"
"Clint!" T'Challa shouted. "Give it to me..."
The moment the gauntlet was handed to another man she teleported away and helped Rocket take down a few aliens, they heard Thanos scream:
"Rain fire!"
"But Sire, our troops!"
"Just do it!"
"Weak," she growled.
The girl flew as fast as she could towards them but something caught her attention: Wanda Maximoff had been thrown back after a missile almost landed on top of her.
"Watch out!" Cat copied the redhead's abilities and stopped the girl —who was now younger than her— from breaking her neck. Pietro rushed over to his sister and gave her a hug, Cat landed next to the twins.
"Hi!" Pietro beamed. "Missed us?"
"Hi," Cat said in a less eager tone, withdrawing her helmet.
Wanda stared at them, they looked way different than what she remembered.
"You have a beard!" The girl told her brother in astonishment. "Copy! Your... Your eyes!"
"Yeah, yeah," Cat positioned an energy shield above their heads and urged them to move forward. "Forget about me, catch up with your twin— why don't you ask Pietro about his boyfriend?"
"Shut up, Copy!" He smiled. "Oh man, I'd missed this!"
The missiles suddenly stopped coming down on them, the ships had redirected their attention to the sky and were shooting at an invisible target.
"Should we be worried about that?" Wanda questioned.
A blinding light traveled across the clouds and pierced through the biggest ship as if it were made of butter, Cat smirked.
"That's Danvers," She looked at Wanda. "Follow me."
Pietro ran out of sight after giving his sister another hug and the girls joined Carol, the woman was talking to Peter, the boy had gotten the gauntlet and he was now passing it to the Captain.
"Nice to see you, Sparkles," Cat teased.
"Hi, superstar," The woman grinned.
"Peter," Wanda tilted her head. "Nice to meet you. I'm sorry about last time."
The boy smiled at her, the first and only time they'd seen each other was while fighting at an airport. He locked eyes with Cat and his expression changed in an instant. The mutant realized her helmet was off, and Peter could see her feline-like gaze.
She turned her back on him and helped Danvers fly across the battlefield, but just when they were about to reach the van's tunnel, Thanos's sword cut it in half and the explosion threw them in different directions.
The gauntlet went up in the air, Cat seized it using Wanda's powers, she was attracting it towards her with a scarlet mist. A spear struck her thigh and it pierced the ground next to her, forcing her to remain in place. It wasn't enough to stop her, so they threw a second one that she barely managed to stop with her free hand. When the third projectile approached flying just as fast, someone else saved her from it by using their own body as a shield.
"NO!"
She dropped the gauntlet a foot away, pulled out the spear from her thigh, and stumbled over to Pietro. The weapon had gone through him swiftly and it'd left a serious wound on his chest from which the blood was pouring in large quantities.
"No, no, no," The girl fell beside him. "Why did you do that!"
His silver hair had red sprayed over it, Wanda quickly found her way to them and now both girls were holding him up. The redheaded girl put her hand over the wound but she couldn't heal him.
"Stay with us!"
Cat's brain stopped working. Pietro's life slipped through each drop of scarlet that poured out of his body. The fight was still happening around them, but the world had gone terribly quiet in her ears.
"Look at me..." She cupped his face, the young man's eyes were losing focus. "Breathe for me— It's alright, it's— it's going to be alright. You wanted to be here for us, remember? Don't go yet..."
His hand reached out for hers and moved it away from his cheek. Silver and blue were now tinted a darker shade wherever Cat looked on her brother's body. He placed both of their hands on top of Wanda's. Pietro opened his mouth, nothing but blood came out.
"Oh God, no— I'm so sorry. It was supposed to be me— I'm sorry..." Her hand squeezed as hard as she could.
He took one last breath, and that was it.
Wanda screamed in agony, around them the ground shook and cracked, and the wave of the explosion sent several aliens and the gauntlet up into the air.
Copycat grabbed her spear, her leg quivered but she couldn't feel any extra pain. The blood in her veins ran cold at the sight of Thanos finding the gauntlet. Tony threw himself at the titan and pulled with all his might, she watched his hands move, Cat wasn't going to freeze this time around.
She teleported between them and pointed the spear directly at Thanos' throat, giving Tony enough time to retreat.
"Any last words?" She rasped.
"I am inevitable," He snapped his fingers... but nothing happened.
She looked over her shoulder and saw Tony add the stones to his own suit, with grief rooted deep within her, Cat did nothing but witness as the guardian of the best years of her youth did one last big sacrifice. One desperate thought occurred to her, the second thing she'd hoped for during the whole fight, and it had been denied to her:
It should've been me.
Whatever came next, she would have to deal with it alone.
"And I..." Tony breathed heavily. "Am... Iron Man."
He snapped his fingers.
Thanos's army vanished as in slow motion. Cat hurried to assist her old friend, Tony supported his weight on her, and she had no trouble carrying it.
"How was that?" The man inhaled harshly. "Shit... this sucks..."
She could hear his heartbeat decreasing. "You did well, man."
"Where's Peter? And the twins?" He wheezed, blinking rapidly. "Jesus, my arm..."
"Everyone's okay," She lied. "You made it."
"I made it," Tony started to drag his feet. "How about we sit... over there? I'm dizzy..."
She placed him in a comfortable position and knelt beside him so he could look at her one last time. Cat turned her eyes brown, she wanted him to see the girl he'd saved from imprisonment.
"Hello, smartypants..." She tried to smile. "I think... I never thanked you properly..."
The man stared at her, he was slipping away. Someone approached them, Rhodey placed his hand on top of Tony's head and brushed his hair out of his face. Both her hands were tightly holding Tony's intact one and she refused to let go.
"Mr. Stark?" Peter asked quietly.
She leaned closer and kissed the man's cheek.
"I'll look after him," Cat whispered. "I promise."
"Hey," Peter fell to his knees. "Mr. Stark? Can you hear me? It's Peter... we won, Mr. Stark. We won, Mr. Stark. We won! You did it, sir! You did it!"
The man had used all of his words, which seemed an almost impossible task.
"I'm sorry... Tony..." Peter cried.
Pepper lifted him up, and as she did the boy added quietly:
"I'll look after C.C., sir. She's going to be okay, I won't let you down..."
Peter wasn't aware of Morgan's existence. He didn't know about Harley, or that it'd been years since Cat had been called C.C. Most importantly, the boy didn't know Copycat no longer needed to be looked after and that she certainly did not want him to try.
She moved so Pepper could kneel before her husband, the woman placed her hand on the man's chest.
"Hey."
"Hey, Pep."
Of course, only death would stop Tony Stark from speaking, but until then, he would carry on until the last second.
"Friday?"
"Life functions critical."
Pepper smiled at him. "Tony? Look at me. We're gonna be okay... You can rest now."
Cat squeezed the man's hand as a final farewell, he exhaled deeply, his other hand letting go of Pepper's. The woman held onto his body, and someone lifted Cat and turned her away from the scene.
Tumblr media
Peter had tried to approach her and she'd done her best to keep him away. She didn't know how to say what she had to say. Eventually, she decided that it'd been postponed for long enough. Peter had to be eased into this new reality as gently as possible, but she would have to break his heart in the process.
She observed him carefully, Cat hadn't aged much but she was taller than him, her body was no longer that of a teenager.
"Five years to you were five seconds..." She began. "I know this is going to be hard on you... but..."
"Cat," he looked at her, "I know something's wrong. I thought you'd be happy to see me and... I know we're all sad about... about Pi and..." He blinked rapidly, looking away. "I just wanna know what's going on."
"We have to split up."
His whole body turned to face her. "What? Why would you say that? We have plans— It's going to be okay, we can make it work—"
"I don't belong in your life," She said calmly. "I dropped out of high school shortly after you vanished. I have no plans to go back," Cat looked down at her feet. "I'll join S.H.I.E.L.D."
"But you hate them," Peter replied in confusion.
"It's necessary," She replied, her voice was void of feeling. "You've been away for too long, many things happened—"
"I met Kurt and Rocket," He shook his head, getting a little annoyed. "It's alright!"
She hesitated. "You talked to them?"
"Yeah!"
"What did they tell you?"
"That you were a Guardian of the Galaxy, you met Skrulls, trained, and got your skills back— but you had to come back cause you were having problems controlling them. It's okay, I know it's hard to get used to it, but you're okay now!"
Her friends had spared Peter from the ugly details, maybe now they understood why she was so fixated on honoring his memory, and they wanted her to remain innocent in the eyes of the sweet kid.
"It doesn't matter, I can't be with you. It's not right."
"Because you're older?" He frowned. "I'll catch up! You can finish high school in the meantime and no one will judge us, I'm sure they'll understand!"
"It's not about age, Peter," She looked around, feeling cornered. "It is about my age, but it's not just that. I've lived, and it's only fair that you do it too however you prefer."
"I want to live with you!" Peter seized her hands. "A house with a white picket fence and many dogs, remember?"
"I can't!" She pushed his hands away, fighting the urge to run from the conversation. "That's not my future."
His eyes began to water. "No! I-I promised Tony that I'll— that we're going to look after each other!"
"I promised May the same thing," Her hand moved as if she were about to touch his face, but in the end, she didn't dare to do it. "This is the only way."
"Don't..."
He looked so fragile then, so... young. She would've caved in for his puppy eyes, but Pietro and Tony's end reminded her of the sacrifices heroes were forced to do when they loved too much.
"I'm sorry, Peter."
Tumblr media
She watched, with her hand wrapped around Morgan's, as a projection of Tony talked to them in the middle of the living room. Cat was smiling in spite of herself, apparently, not even death could stop Tony Stark from having the last word.
"Then again that's the hero gig, right? Part of the journey it's the end. Right, Kitkat? I know you get it. If you're watching this, in case we, unfortunately, didn't die side by side saving everyone's butt— You get it, right? There's a time and place for everything, even if we're too scared to take the leap."
She'd told him not going for it was selfish, but that was only because she'd been certain that the one dying would be her. Out of Tony, Pietro, and her, the mutant was the only one who had nothing to live for, yet there she was, still breathing.
Cat wondered if the world had been the selfish one instead.
Tumblr media
When Pepper and Morgan sent the flower arrangement away, Copycat turned to the young men next to her.
"I gotta talk to Fury," She said. "Be right back..."
"Sure," Harley said hoarsely, he'd decided to come and he would later join her and Wanda to visit Pietro's grave. He didn't blame her for what had happened. "Take your time."
"I should join you," Kurt commented. "I don't think I'll be of use now that the real Guardians are back..."
"Gamora ran away and no one knows where she is, you can have her place."
"They're her family, she'll come back," He shrugged. "Even if she doesn't remember. I bet she can feel it."
"Don't do this for my sake."
He locked eyes with her. "If I leave and never see you again, I don't... I can't even think about it."
She swallowed the lump in her throat. "Having friends is a risky business for people like us, Kurt."
He held her hand. "Let me watch your back, I know you'll watch mine anyway."
She stared at him intensely. "Let me give you some advice: Don't let S.H.I.E.L.D. find you."
Kurt frowned. "But you're going to join them!"
"I owe Pietro and Tony to keep the peace they died for. I owe it to Nat... I can't quit."

the items on my recent work trip to phoenix that i will be claiming reimbursement for, ranked & reviewed:
two donuts and an iced tea at the donut place across the street from the hotel. the platonic ideal of a donut to me is that they should taste good and you should be able to eat two of them in the morning and be able to go about the rest of your day no problem. dunkin donuts are not this because they do not taste good, and the donuts from artisanal donut places are not this because you eat half of one and need to go down for a nap, and these seem to be the only options around where i live. by contrast, these donuts were light and fluffy, and i was able to maintain attention through boring work meetings without wanting to take a nap for reasons associated with the donuts. the iced tea, flavor-wise, was nothing special (clearly just made from ordinary tea bags) but was strong, which also an unfortunate rarity. in total, like $7, great deal.
hotel stay at the sheraton downtown. got a room with two double beds instead of one king, which is whatever. the comforter was not a comforter, but instead some manner of fitted sheet wrapped around a plastic blanket? it was unclear to me at any point why this was, but was especially unclear when the blanket became unfitted from the sheet, waking me up at 4am while i tried to piece together what happened. also, i dislike the new trend of putting full size toiletries in bathrooms now, i want to steal tiny lotions man, c'mon. food provided for meeting was pretty good and varied (no boxed lunches!). stay overall was okay, but not $700 for two nights okay.
parking at the central parking garage at logan airport. turns out that the central garage at 10am on wednesdays can be full! my car was "valeted" which in practice means they parked it at the next open spot and then the parking attendant gave me my key and told me where it was. also the parking attendant did not have the correct location for my car. $123 but considering that the other option was public transit there an after-midnight uber back i think i'm okay with paying this. the sumner tunnel being closed after 11pm did not affect the placing of this on the list. this whole parking experience was stressful for reasons i will go into later.
the items on my recent work trip to phoenix that are already paid for but i need to include on my reimbursement for record keeping purposes, ranked & reviewed:
flight from boston to phoenix. six hours in the air is a long ass time. they only provided snacks once (the impression i got was that they didn't have many tp give out??), and it was just a packet of two biscoff cookies. read some of a book about coding, wrote some notes about a coding project i'm working on in my spare time, listened to the religion disasters episode of the shutdown fullcast (see below). i do not know how i managed to handle flights this long in the past before i had an adderall prescription. i had a flight from new york to phoenix late last year where my dose wore off midway through and i was unable to take my afternoon pill, and i quickly started feeling like i would do something that would land me on a watchlist or get tackled by an air marshall.
flight from phoenix to boston. somehow i think the flight was only four hours and change (not sure how. jet stream?) but we spent an additional hour and a half at the gate in phoenix while they fixed a computer issue. finished reading "the pigeon tunnel" by john le carre and read some more of a couple of coding books. pulled up to the gate at midnight which is too late to get food pretty much anywhere. i think overall my time on this plane was shorter than the flight out but it was so much worse.
the items on my recent work trip to phoenix that i will not be claiming reimbursement for, ranked & reviewed:
three donuts and an iced tea at the donut place across the street from the hotel. the donuts mentioned above were so good that i went back the next day even though breakfast was being provided. ordered and paid for two donuts and they gave me three instead. $7, and winner of DEAL OF THE TRIP. can't reimburse because a meal was provided.
two tacos, rice, and refried beans from a taco place across from the phoenix suns' arena. good food, not too heavy and didn't make me more tired than i already was. got to peoplewatch the bad bunny fans go to the concert, always neat. i think $15? can't reimburse because i paid cash and forgot to get a receipt like a dope.
two sazeracs from the hotel bar. love a sazerac. was ordering off-menu but checked with the bartender on if they had the stuff to make one and he said yes (even had the absinthe). i feel like hotel bars generally make good, if expensive, drinks. enjoyed these with coworkers and two people who i would with but wouldn't classify as coworkers for reasons i will not get into (mainly we don't work for the same company). $15 or so each, i think. can't reimburse because alcohol
two house margaritas at the taco place mentioned above. for some reason i am a sucker for a cocktail that you get from a tap. good enough, had a bit of a carbonated taste to it but overall enjoyed. stronger than the drinks that i bought at a recent work outing to a local sports bar. $13 each, which is a lot, but it's next to an arena so i'll give it to them. can't reimburse because alcohol.
glass of (i think) sauvignon blanc at the hotel bar. did not drink this myself, but bought for a coworker i really appreciate. don't remember how much, but probably $12-15. can't reimburse because alcohol.
taxi ride to the airport from the hotel. the best thing i can say is that we got there in plenty of time. we managed to do that by blowing through two red lights. very cool! $25. can't reimburse because i did not get a receipt and paid cash because the driver could not find his credit card reader thing.
vibes and other miscellaneous that i interacted with on my recent work trip to phoenix that are ineligible for reimbursement by virtue of the fact that they are vibes, ranked & reviewed:
the most recent live episode of the shutdown fullcast (the internet's only college football podcast), which is a combination book release party for jason kirk's book ("hell is a world without you") and a religion disasters episode. fantastic. tremendous. i must have looked crazy to the person sitting next to me trying not to laugh out loud on the flight out. also includes at least one excerpt from the book which was amazing (i believe there were two excerpts but i can't recall at the moment if the second fully-casted read was in the book, but this was very good too), as was the fact that the entire pre-order proceeds ($56,000) went to the trevor project. The whole thing shifted "hell is..." up to next on my reading list once i finished...
the pigeon tunnel, by john le carre. le carre's my favorite author so it shouldn't be a surprise that i enjoyed what would probably be best described as his abridged memoirs. while initially disappointed that it's not a full telling of his life, i do somewhat respect the idea that the life-stories of the assets he ran aren't really his to tell, and that cover remains cover even to the dead (nevermind the fact that most spy stuff is dull). certainly, "a perfect spy" is a more complete biography than we'll receive otherwise. it's not his best work and certainly no tinker, tailor or smiley's people but i'm not sure anything he'd written in the past 15 or so years would be.
the idea of flying six hours one-way to go to a two-day in-person meeting. it was nice to see people i hadn't seen in person for months or years, but i'm not sure that phoenix was the best destination for it. flying out on the day before the meeting instead of the day of (as originally planned) turned out to be a saving grace, and probably would've meant either no real sleep or sleep during the meeting. would've preferred it in DC as originally planned.

The Backyard Trellis
Memoir
It was the summer of my fourth year.  My mother, younger sister and I had recently moved from Louisville to Chicago and we were staying with my maternal grandmother in her walk-up apartment on the south side of the city.  It was not far from Midway Airport.  I used to see the airport searchlights sweeping the night sky from the window by my bed as I drifted off to sleep.  My parents had separated during the war and were eventually to divorce, and my father was at that time living in another part of the country.
My mother took me with her to visit a college friend of hers, Gert Silverman, shortly after we moved in with my grandmother.  Gert and her husband Nate had bought a house in the south Chicago suburbs.  This was the first of many times I was taken to the Silvermans’ over the course of my childhood.  Even after my mother moved us to the West, the occasional trip back to Chicago always included a visit to see Gert and Nate.  I used to look forward to these visits.  Gert and Nate loved being visited by children, and they were among the few grown-ups who wanted my sister and me to call them by their first names.  Their house had an expansive back lawn that bordered on a commuter rail line.  As an older child, I would interrupt my running about the yard to wave to the engineers of the many passing trains and they would usually wave back.
For this, the first of my visits to the Silvermans, my mother felt it necessary to coach me in advance regarding my behavior.  She told me that Gert and Nate had a son named Bobby who was the same age as I.  Of course, it was expected that Bobby and I would play together while we were there, but I had to understand something important about Bobby.  He was a boy and he was my age but he was very different from me.  He could not run or climb on things, which my mother knew were my favorite play activities.  Bobby and I could only “play quietly” while we were together.
When we arrived, I was immediately intimidated by Bobby.  My mother had told me he was quite different from me, but I had not imagined his appearance would be so strange.  He was similar in size and shape to me, but his skin was a bizarre mottled mixture of white and blue that was unlike that of any person I had ever seen.
I dutifully followed my mother, Gert, and Bobby to the back yard and sat down in the shady area Gert pointed out to me.  She had Bobby sit a few feet away.  Then both mothers retreated indoors, to the living room.
Bobby and I sat together silently for a while.  I surveyed the yard, which at first appeared totally lacking in play equipment.   Then I spied something at the perimeter that interested me greatly.  I initially took it to be a set of climbing bars, a “Jungle Gym” that was a familiar feature in play parks near my home.  When I got near it, I realized it was something else, too flimsy to have been constructed for children’s play.  It was not securely anchored to the ground nor to the fence against which it rested.  It was, in fact, a trellis, although there were no plants growing on it.  Nonetheless, it invited climbing, and I could not resist.
The trellis flexed under my weight, but it stayed upright as I neared the top.  Then I felt it move below me and I looked down.  To my amazement, there was Bobby, who was following me, imitating my movements and climbing the trellis, and he was already past the first rungs.  And he had, for the first time that afternoon, a broad smile on his face!
Bobby’s smile warmed my heart.  The distance between us had suddenly vanished.  And I felt I had just experienced an epiphany.  Bobby and I really weren’t that different after all.  My mother had been flat-out wrong when she told me that Bobby couldn’t climb.  Of course he could climb, I had just seen him do it with my own eyes!  So I imagined that I had just made an important discovery, uncovered an ability Bobby had that Gert and my mother hadn’t known about, and that they would thank me for finding it.
My mother, who must have been observing the back yard through a window, came storming out of the back door of the house, shouting my name, and scolding me, “Didn’t I tell you that Bobby couldn’t climb, and you led him to do it anyway!”
We left shortly afterward, amid my mother’s profuse apologies for my behavior, with my own mind in a state of confusion.  I don’t know how long it took me to understand that when my mother had said Bobby can’t climb, she had meant he was not permitted to climb, that it might overly burden his poor little heart, not that he lacked the ability to do so.
I was stung by the ferocity of the scolding I had just received, by what seemed to me the injustice of being chastened for doing a seeming good deed, initiating a bond of friendship with another child.
I never saw Bobby again.  This was a time before there were heart bypass machines, before cardiac surgery had developed ways to correct the effects of cyanotic congenital heart disease, and there was no hope back then for his survival.  Gert and Nate had no more children.  When we visited them in later years, their many years of childlessness after Bobby had died, we never spoke of him.
Now, in the autumn of my life, having experienced parenthood myself, and the loss of various loved ones over the years, I can only dimly imagine what it would be like to give birth to a child, and to nurture that child through infancy, knowing all the time that that child’s death is imminent and inevitable.  Yet that’s what Gert and Nate were going through back then.
It occurs to me now, that the adults in the story – Gert, Nate, and my mother – were scarcely beyond childhood themselves when these events unfolded.  Specifically, they were in their late twenties, much younger than my own children are now, possessed of the youthful energy required for the rigors of toddler care, but barely equipped to deal with the profundities of sorrow, suffering and death that normally are a part of later life.
I can’t help but wonder if my unknowing presence on that visit, rowdy and animated as I was and in stark contrast to Bobby’s frailty, made Gert’s sorrow more acute.
On another occasion, years later, I overheard my mother relate a conversation she had had with Gert when she visited her in the maternity ward shortly after Bobby was born and his terrible anomaly had become apparent.  Gert asked my mother if she thought Bobby’s affliction could have been a punishment from God for her having married and conceived a child with a man who was a Jew.
The memory of my afternoon with Bobby never leaves me before I ask myself whether my enticing Bobby to climb the trellis caused him significant injury.  Did my burst of infectious, naïve rambunctiousness lead him to overtax his frail body and, as a result, shave hours or days from the short lifetime that had been allotted to him?  Even with the benefit of a medical education, I find this impossible to answer.
If there is ever a time or place where I am held to account for this particular impulsive act, I hope that it will be reckoned that the same costly event also brought Bobby a moment of joy, a moment revealed by the broad smile he showed me as he was climbing.
