Yesterday someone said to me that it was "hard to fly anywhere from California" and the notion was so mind-boggling I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. In the Bay Area, there are three major international airports, two of which are very accessible via multiple modes of public transportation, which run relatively often and with a wide range of operational hours. If you don't like that, Uber/Lyft rates are reasonable. And there are flights just like, all the time, from a variety of airlines.

I am lucky that there is a tiny airport in a city I live near, which services like five flights a day. But unless I am in that city (not my house) there is no Uber/Lyft. The bus that services my town also runs five or six times a day. I am even luckier that there is a middling airport 80 miles away. Most of those are rural miles, though you hit an Interstate about an hour into the drive. There is a bus that runs a couple times a day, which may or may not match with your flight times and usually doesn't match with the local bus. If you want an Uber/Lyft it is $300 but again, that would be from the city near me, not my actual house. There is also a long-distance bus that will take you to the nearest MAJOR major metropolitan area (4 hours), which has the three major airports, mostly accessible via public transportation. Also, any flight near me costs about a billion dollars unless you have the ability to not need to park anywhere or make buses line up, in which case they are merely somewhat expensive.

And that is, all things considered, in the scheme of transportation and ways one might access them in this country, pretty good. Like, there are so many places where it would be way worse. (Even though it is the hardest place to get to an airport that *I* have ever lived. I used to live in western Michigan, next to a city that had its own tiny airport, very similar to my current situation. But Grand Rapids was half as far and Detroit was an easy, easy shot down I-94, and technically Amtrak goes to Chicago. But, having lived in Michigan, nothing is a greater hell than a Chicago airport.)

To modernize Paris, Haussmann planned to bring clean water and sewers, light the streets with gas lanterns, build a central market (Les Halles), and build parks, schools, hospitals, asylums, prisons, and administrative buildings. Similarly, Haussmann's design influenced the Plan of Chicago, which incorporated a central focal point, boulevards, and streets emerging from the city center. Some essential elements of the plan were the expansion of the Emerald Necklace, the widening of Michigan Avenue, and the major public reclamation of the lakeshore. One of the only main structural differences is that instead of being a copy of Paris, with its very stylized buildings, Chicago boasts one of the world's most architecturally diverse skylines. 

All of this can be kept in mind when planning Cincinnati. Currently, the city struggles with many issues, such as:

1. Too Much Pollution (According to the American Lung Association, the area is ranked as one of the most polluted cities for year-round particle pollution and ozone levels.) 

2. Bad Traffic (Some specific locations cause the most headaches due to traffic congestion. Specifically, the Brent Spence Bridge that connects the metropolitan areas of Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati across the Ohio River. Its primary purpose is to feed traffic from CVG airport to downtown, making it constantly busy.) 

3. Limited Public Transportation

So what are some ways Cincinnati can learn from Haussmann's Paris and Plan of Chicago to help fix these issues? Although Haussmann didn't get to see the light of renewable energy, he would undoubtedly have wanted it incorporated into the Parisian plan. He valued a clean, beautiful, lively city which Cincinnati could be if focused on the environmental footprint and green areas. 

The public transportation and bad traffic issues can actually be solved with each other. If Cincinnati were to focus on public transport as heavily as Paris and Chicago have, the city would revamp completely with calculated infrastructure, bus lanes, bike lanes, and sidewalks - all providing travel options outside the private vehicle. 

When it comes down to poverty problems and income inequality, Haussmann's Plan for Paris and Burnham's Plan of Chicago will not help. Especially Haussmann's Paris, maybe he really did have good intentions for most of society; however, he displaced some 350,000 people, similar to high-income targeted planners in the Over The Rhine Cincinnati area.

Cincinnati could learn a few things from Haussmann’s  design of Paris but not from Chicago. Cincinnati’s planning and the way it was designed would not support a lot of these improvements. There's a lot of problems, such as terrible traffic, especially the bottleneck area of the Brent Spence being named 2 for the most congested bottleneck in the nation. The layout of the city that wouldn't support a lot of improvements like hoped. It would need to start from the ground up in my opinion to make huge improvements to Cincinnati. Not for all projects, but for the huge ones that would undo a lot of the damage done that past poor planning has done. Cincinnati has a lot of problems with over gentrification, and when the highway was built it cut right through neighborhoods now making those neighborhoods not have access to the already limited public transportation and lots of other resources that are considered a need. That makes those neighborhoods now be underprivileged, and low income families reside in these areas. Now people are trying to come in and gentrify it so it's just pushing the poor people out and not helping them. That's what Haussmann’s plan did with Chicago and that's not what Cincinnati needs.  Cincinnati needs to emulate Paris’s public transportation system and that would be an amazing start to the improvements. Haussmann's plan for cleaning up the air should be something Cincinnati looks into because that's what Haussmann wanted for Paris, a beautiful and lively city, which Cincinnati had all the potential to be.

When looking at Chicago there are a lot of things in which I would implement into the city. One of these things being the transportation system. This would be because it would allow the traffic of the city to be less congested all the time. The second thing I feel as if it would help Cincinnati to implement from Chicago would be the river system which allows there to be transportation throughout the river. This would be nice to add to Cincinnati because there would be more of an entertainment area and would allow traffic in a better way getting it away from main and busy roads. Seeing things already being added from Chicago styles really is what made me see that we should add more of this style to the city. The following picture is what I feel would do really well throughout the riverfront of Cincinnati.

I think while it is possible to emulate portions of Haussmann’s Paris Plan in Cincinnati, it would be met with more fierce backlash than it did at its original timing. The idea of “down with the old and up with the new” probably would not get over the older demographic though, because many would claim its most important element, or its backbone is the old standing architecture. So renovating Cincinnati completely would be taking away moreso, rather than replacing it to make it ‘like new.’ The Chicago Plan, however, could be taken more literally when applied to Cincinnati however, and some of the key supports in the city could solve many rising issues in the Cinci area. The key roads and railroads, the coordinated vehicular travel paths, and the bustling streets came from only the original plan, which had put emphasis on these points. When you look at downtown Cincinnati as a whole, the buildings get crowded, lighting is affected as a result, and overall safety and accessibility become more reliant on Automobiles. The plan for an improved city transit system (such as Chicago's railways and inner city paths) would be ideal, and the same approach for Chicago would be applied. In short, many of the issues that Cincinnati has, stem from the way it was designed and this could have been avoided in part, by reflecting the Chicago plan.
