Arshi FF : A River Runs Through It
Author : Meera
Status : Completed and available on Meera’s blog
Genre: Romance, Angst, Fluff
“Keep Reading” to read my two cents on the fic. Contains a few spoilers
My two cents :
If you’re looking for a story that took the names of your favourite characters from IPK, moulded them into something golden and weaved a gorgeous tale surrounding them, look no further. This is a story that will break your heart and heal it just as amazingly.
A river runs through it, mirrors exactly what the name suggests; Journey of a river as it gushes towards its last destination- the ocean. Kaveri Khushi Gupta and Arnav Varun are here to make you realise just how much beauty resides in the ordinary.
This is what made me fall immensely with this FF. There are no exaggerated dramas and yet you will feel every emotion just as intensely. The magic of this tale is rooted in its simplicity. From a simple crush on a cute college senior to battling with much relatable insecurities, you will go on a compelling journey with Kaveri Khushi Gupta as she makes her way to her Ocean, her Arnav. From the campus and banks of Ganges in Varanasi to the scenic beauty of Rishikesh Riverside and to the corporate jungle of United States, you will follow Khushi and Arnav on a decade long journey and you will be left craving another decade with them.
Meera’s writing is surreal and she is hands down one of the best writers we have in the Arshi world. And would you believe me when I say Arnav and Khushi aren’t the only stars of the story? Meera’s love of 90s Bollywood music shines throughout the story and you will be hit with nostalgia and butterflies in equal measure, in every single chapter! The music itself is an important character in the tale, and shapes the story as both our protagonists hum their way through life. You’re gonna end this story with a riveting Bollywood playlist in your repertoire. Trust me!
If the above summary has still not convinced you to give this story a go here are the four words that should - Arnav with a guitar! Go read it now.
Ps and spoiler - Arnav singing ‘Janam Dekh lo’ and ‘Batein Ankahi’ has forever altered my brain chemistry. Now those two songs belong to him and this story. Coming from an SRK fan that’s saying something 😉

Donate Money To Charity
More often, people think that charity involvement only means donating money. While this can be a great way of helping, especially when the charitable organization you are supporting uses most of the funds directly for the cause they claim to support, it is unfortunate that there are charities who use only a small amount of the contributions they receive directly to people who they are supposed to help. So you need to find a very reputable charity organization supporting a really worthy cause.
Varindavaneshvari charity foundation is a nonprofit company that helps to support charitable activities so that they can help those in need. A foundation is usually created with donations or endowments, which is money given by families, corporations, or as part of private philanthropy. Normally, this type of foundation will run programs from the income that has been earned by investing endowments.
Most experts suggest that any non-profit charity organization should spend no more than 25% of the contributions they receive on overhead and administrative costs. So, it is also wise to collect information about the spending pattern of the charity you would want to support. Once you check our pattern by visiting our non profit website Vrindavaneshwari, we have faith, you have joined us after seeing our pattern.
Charity has not mattered to the rich or the poor. The charity has no relationship with your sex or nationality. Charity is just what you want to do to help others. Love is spread by the charity to every corner of the world. There are many types of charity you can do. As everyone has a different living condition, you can choose the most suitable type of charity to help others e.g. food charity, sadhu seva, Money donation, etc.
Money donations may be what every organization needs, for charities are nonprofit organizations. They need financial support from contributors to further their missions. You might not be a millionaire, which could not stop you from donating, for you can just give away a few pennies. If everyone is able to donate a few pennies, the charity will raise a large amount of money.
People have to eat! There will always be a demand for food, so why not use this demand to raise funds for your cause Or you can do food charity? Eating is a socially driven practice so fundraisers involving food are sure to draw a crowd. Food-related events are a chance for people to mix and mingle, making them both fun and memorable.
Sadhus are highly revered in our Indian culture and tradition. Vrindavan is a holy land where many sadhus reside, desiring to spend the rest of their lives in the service of the Lord. They lead a simple and austere life engaging themselves in devotional activities. The sadhus of Vrindavan have surrendered to Lord Krishna, they perform bhajans and kirtans in temples. We can also find them circumambulating the entire Vrindavan Dham. They generally do not have a fixed accommodation and are dependent on the kindness of devotees for their sustenance. As these sadhus are very dear to the Lord, we consider it our duty to serve them. Do you ask us to do Sadhu Seva with us? You can contact us on this website varindavehvari for donating to charity.

October Prompts - 13th
Prompt - ‘You brought this upon yourself, you have no one else to blame’
“You could just miracle it away.”
The angel didn’t even dignify him with a look, as he continued to transfer art supplies from the tables to the box. “And you could stop telling me how to run my centre. I don’t even know why you’re here, to be honest. You know I have a lot to do.”
“You make yourself a lot to do,” the demon countered as he wandered along the south side of the hall, peering at the latest creations of Crowley’s youth group.
It ran for the duration of the summer, somewhere for the local children to go when their parents had to work, and the angel spent his days happily mucking about with paint and clay and odd little games that the humans seemed to enjoy.
“Ha!” He paused, bending to study one of the little clay figurines. “I think this one is meant to be you, my dear.”
“Yeah?” Crowley abandoned his tidying to come over. A dopey smile lit his face. “Ah, that’s Meera’s. She’s very good.”
“Mm. I can recognise the sarcasm in the face,” Aziraphale said with a grin. “Look! She even managed to make you smirk.”
Crowley flashed a glare at him. “I don’t smirk.”
“And I don’t enjoy a good dinner,” Aziraphale retorted, chuckling. “She missed the bottle of wine in your hand. You always have one when I’m around.”
Crowley made a face. “I don’t drink around the children, do I?”
“Suppose not.” Aziraphale glanced up at the mural hanging on the wall. “Who’s idea was that?”
Crowley followed his gaze. “Some of the kids were doing World War II at school,” he said with a crooked grin. “One of them had dug up the history of the church. 50th anniversary since it was blown up. They wanted to do a painting of it.”
Aziraphale couldn’t help chuckling. “Ah, children. The things that delight them.” He studied it. “I assume you didn’t have the heart to tell them that it wasn’t on fire like that? That is rather an impressive amount of flame for a building that crumbled like shortbread.”
“Oh, shush,” Crowley snorted, returning to his tidying, organising bottles and tubes of paint by colour into the large storage box.
“No Nazis either, I notice,” Aziraphale continued, fighting a smile. “One would imagine you could have let them know about Nazis.” He meandered across the floor after the angel. “Or do you prefer to pretend I didn’t dash in like a knight in shining armour to save you?”
“Dash,” Crowley echoed, laughing. “Bounced in, you mean. Hopped. Waddled.”
Aziraphale made a moue, folding his arms. “Is that any way to treat someone who saved you from Nazis?”
“Rich, coming from the person who was almost completely offed by the KGB,” Crowley retorted.
For a moment, Aziraphale stared at him. “I beg your pardon?”
The angel was stock still. “Um.”
“What do you mean,” Aziraphale demanded, stalking closer, “‘completely offed by the KGB’?”
The flush was rapidly accelerating up the back of Crowley’s neck. “Nothing?”
“Nothing.” Aziraphale insinuated himself between angel and art table. “The colour in your face suggests it’s something.”
Crowley fidgeted, avoiding his eyes, his fists clenching and unclenching by his sides. Anyone else might have pushed for answers, but Aziraphale knew the angel well enough to simply stare at him and wait. Crowley had a bad habit. He liked to… enlighten people, especially when he had a receptive, waiting audience.
“He had holy water!” he wailed. “What was I meant to do?”
Aziraphale’s heart was suddenly in his throat. “A human? A human with holy water?”
“I mean, he didn’t know what you are,” Crowley babbled like a broken tap that couldn’t stop. “I– he was– look, he had a knife, but he was carrying a bottle of the stuff from his nan for good luck and I– he didn’t know it would do anything to you, but I did and I couldn’t– so I didn’t and he wouldn’t’ve stopped so I did the big, flashy aaaaaaaaaaaah! And then he–”
He bit off his words, shoving the shell-shocked Aziraphale aside and snatching up the box.
“S’a long time ago. Doesn’t matter.”
Doesn’t matter.
Intervening with humans to save the life of a demon. Not just the corporation, but the life of a demon.
Crowley was all but running out of the hall to the supply cupboard. Aziraphale gave chase, catching him there with nowhere to flee.
“Angel.”
The box rattled in the angel’s hands as he shoved it up onto the shelf. He was taut as a bow, his shoulders hunched, his back to the demon. “Don’t. Don’t make a thing of it. S’nothing.”
For once, Aziraphale could not give a damn about restraint. He closed the distance between them and – pressing to Crowley’s back – wrapped his arms around the angel’s waist. “It’s not nothing, my dear,” he said, his own voice treacherously shaky.
Crowley shivered, one hand clutching at the demon’s wrist. “’Ziraphale…”
“I’m sorry, my dear,” Aziraphale said, holding him that little bit tighter. “You brought this on yourself.”
And, for only a moment, a brief, lovely instant, the angel leaned back into him. “Shot myself in the foot there, didn’t I?” he said hoarsely.
Aziraphale smiled against his shoulder. “Oh yes. Now you’ll never be rid of me.”
Crowley’s laugh was small and shaky. “Damn.”
He patted Aziraphale’s wrist lightly and the demon knew that anything more would risk damaging what he had already been given, so he loosened his arms.
“Shall I help?” he offered. “With the tidying?”
Crowley glanced back over his shoulder, then offered the smallest of smiles and nods. “I’d like that.”
And so, Aziraphale, tempter, corrupter, and demon, ended up mopping the floor of a church.

A Brief Legal History Of The LGBTQ+ Workplace
By Meera Gosavi, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Class of 2022
June 23, 2020
Tumblr media
On June 15th, 2020, the Supreme Court made a historic ruling that applied Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to gay and transgender people. Bostock v. Clayton County, a combination of three related cases on discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community, defined “sex” under Title VII, which says that there will be no discrimination in employment on the basis of sex [i]. Sexual orientation and gender identity are included under the definition of “sex,” which means gay and transgender people are protected against workplace discrimination. In the many years it took for the United States to reach this ruling, the LGBTQ+ community in the workplace has been the center of discussion numerous times. The following is a brief history on gay and transgender rights, with a focus on important events related to workplace discrimination.
1924– 1925: Henry Gerber, a German immigrant, founds the first American homosexual rights organization, the Society for Human Rights in Chicago. Gerber and the Society publish Friendship and Freedom, the first gay-interest publication in the United States. The society eventually disbands after claims of inappropriate events staged by the organization and arrests of several of its members, including Henry Gerber[ii].
1950 – late 1969: Harry Hay starts the Mattachine Society in Los Angeles, the second prominent gay and lesbian rights group. Hay conceives the group with the idea to protect the rights of gay men, but it eventually declines because it is not seen as radical or confrontational enough [iii].
1953: President Eisenhower signs Executive Order 10450 which discusses security requirements for government employment. Section 8a declares that employment could be terminated on the basis of “sexual perversion” or facts that would subject the employee to “coercion, influence, or pressure,” both of which were used to fire gay and lesbian individuals [iv].
1958: One, Inc., a spinoff of the Mattachine Society, sues Otto Oleson, the postmaster of Los Angeles, for declaring its magazine obscene and therefore unmailable. The Supreme Court reverses the lower court ruling and upholds the constitutional protection for pro-homosexual publications [v].
July 2nd 1964: President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination in public places and employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
June 28th – July 3rd 1969: The Stonewall riots occur in response to a police raid and start a long history of gay liberation movements.
April 1974: Kathy Kozachenko becomes the first openly out candidate to run and get elected to political office.
January 1975: The first federal gay rights bill banning discrimination based on sexual orientation is introduced, but never brought up for consideration by the Judiciary Committee [vi].
1982:Wisconsin becomes the first state to ban discrimination and harassment in the workplace, housing, and other public accommodations on the basis of sexual orientation [vii].
October 1st 1993: The Clinton administration signs the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy regarding the service of homosexual individuals in the military. Under this policy, people identifying as LGBTQ+ serving in the military were prohibited from talking about their sexual orientation, while commanding officers were prohibited from asking [viii].
2002: The Human Rights Campaign releases an index on workplace policies and practices regarding gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer employees, termed the Corporate Equality Index. This index continues to be released every fall [ix]
September 20th 2011: The Obama administration repeals the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, allowing gay, lesbian, and bisexual people to serve openly in the United States armed forces [viii]
December 15th 2014: Attorney General Eric Holder issues memo ordering the Justice Department to view “sex” in Title VII as encompassing gender identity, protecting transgender people [x].
June 26th, 2015: Gay marriage is legalized in the United States.
July 27th 2015: The Boy Scouts of America lift the ban on openly gay leaders and employees, but still allows troops sponsored by religious groups to choose leaders in accordance with their beliefs [xi]
April 4th 2017:The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals rules on Hively v. Ivy Tech Community College, a case where Kimberly Hively, an openly lesbian instructor at Ivy Tech Community College sued Ivy Tech under employment discrimination after being reprimanded for kissing her girlfriend, being denied full-time positions, and an eventual termination of part-time position. The court rules that discrimination based on sexual orientation violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 [xii]
October 5th 2017: Attorney General Jeff Sessions issues memo ordering the Justice Department to not view transgender people as protected under Title VII, reversing the 2014 memo by Attorney General Eric Holder [xiii]
June 15th 2020: The Supreme Court rules on Altitude Express v. Zarda, Bostock v. Clayton County, GA, and R.G. and G.R. Harris Funeral Homes v. EEOC and Aimee Stephens, three similar cases regarding employees being fired after disclosing they were gay or transgender. SCOTUS rules that the term “sex” in Title VII does include sexual orientation and gender identity [i].
The workplace has changed monumentally for members of the LGBTQ+ community, with more and more legislation coming into effect giving equal rights. There are still many gaps in American society for gay and transgender people, including healthcare benefits, bathroom access, discrimination in small businesses, parental leave, and even dress code. With the social acceptance and increase in advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, the future may bring definitive rulings on a variety of these issues.

NH10 (film)
NH10 is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language thriller film directed by Navdeep Singh and written by Sudip Sharma. It stars Anushka Sharma, Neil Bhoopalam, Darshan Kumar, Deepti Naval and Ravi Jhankal. NH10 was jointly produced by Clean Slate Films, Phantom Films, Eros International and marked the production debut of Sharma. It tells the story of a young couple whose road trip goes awry after an encounter with a group of violent criminals. The title refers to the National Highway 10 that connects Delhi to the town of Fazilka in Punjab.
Meera and Arjun have corporate jobs in Gurgaon. One night, they are enjoying a party when Meera receives a telephone call from her office. She leaves for her office but is attacked by thugs who smash her car's window. Meera escapes but is shaken by the incident; Arjun buys Meera a gun. Arjun suggests a road trip for Meera's upcoming birthday; the couple start their journey the next day. While stopping at a roadside dhaba for lunch, a young woman called Pinky arrives and pleads for help; Pinky tells the couple she and her husband are about to be murdered. Meera and Arjun see a gang of men round up Pinky and a young man, beat them and drag them into their vehicle. Arjun intervenes but Satbir, the gang leader, slaps him and tells him Pinky is his own sister. Arjun drives after the gang; he and Meera witness the ongoing honour killing: Pinky and the young man are beaten and Pinky poisoned by Satbir. Arjun and Meera escape but the gang finds them. As the gang dig a grave for their victims, Satbir uses Meera and Arjun's gun to shoot Pinky and the man in front of them. A fight ensues and Arjun shoots a gang member named Chhote, and runs away with Meera.
At night, one of the gang members injures Arjun; Meera shoots the gangster dead. At a railway bridge, Meera leaves Arjun to get help. She finds a police station and asks the officer to help but he rejects her when she says she has witnessed an honour killing. Outside, she meets an Inspector in his SUV and they drive back to find Arjun. Meera then realises the Inspector is connected with the attackers; she kills the inspector and drives off in his car, chased by the gang. Meera overturns the SUV and finds a hut. The hut's occupants hide Meera from a gang member who comes asking about her; they advise Meera seek help from the sarpanch (chief) of a nearby village.
Meera tells the village's chief Ammaji her story; after telling her of the honour killing, Meera sees a pillow cover with the word Pinky stitched on it on Ammaji's lap and a photograph of Pinky in the room. Ammaji locks Meera in the room, calls the gang and hands Meera over to them. They drag her out and beat her. Meera escapes with the gang's SUV and rushes to the railway bridge where she finds Arjun has been murdered.
Grief-stricken, Meera returns to the village to avenge Arjun's death; she drives the SUV at the gang members and kills them. Ammaji arrives, finds the dead men; she tells Meera Pinky was her daughter who broke rules and needed to be punished. Meera leaves the village as dawn breaks.

Your intentions matter. Your intentions have the ability to determine many things in life. I keep saying that this is my year for being more intentional. I will quit doing things that I do not find value in. So I quit AAUW, my feminist club. It wasted my time and I dreaded going to meetings. I also quit Cru. I felt like I needed to go in order to be a “good Christian” but I also hated going. I love going to Crossroads with my friends on Sundays, but after people in Cru were so rude to my friend, Molly, I decided it was time to officially stop going. I’m glad that I am starting to make more intentional choices.
There is something to be said about the importance of pruning out the bad in order to grow new healthy vines.
Time is the one thing that we will always lack. With this being said, it seems like there is still never enough time in a day to do everything that I would like, hence why my checklist goes on for weeks and not only a day.
When I thought more about this, I decided that I was going to challenge myself to say no to one thing every day. It sounds easy, but some day it isn’t. Whether it is saying no to dinner with a friend or a run or a homework assignment, I am doing this with the idea in mind that saying no to less important things will allow me to say yes to the things I need to say yes to. It allows me a bit more flexibility in my day to day.
I’m really glad I challenge myself to this. It is not easy, and I definitely don’t see a reward every single day, but it has overtime allowed me to see some of the benefits such as caring for friends that need to be cared for and loving on people that just need a little bit of extra love that day.
QUESTIONING
The other thing about intentionality is that it comes with questions that you ask. Why don’t you ask more intentional questions every day? You’re capable of it and it leads to better conversations so there is really no excuse other than laziness. When it came to the 3 questions assignment to email of things you want to find out from Friedman, a classmate and the entire class, I asked:
To the class as a whole: To those who know me well and barely know me at all - how fitting is the brand of ivy to me and how could I refine it moving forward?
To Ireland: Who are 3 people you think I would benefit from meeting and can you introduce me to them?
To Friedman: You know me well and you know my interests and passions with events moving forward. Who are 3 people that you think I would benefit from meeting and can you introduce me to them?
The more I thought about these the more questions I started to ask myself. Why didn’t I ask riskier questions? Why haven’t I already asked these exact questions? What would my life look like if I started asking these questions every single day? What if I started questioning everything...
So I did. Here are 5 questions per day I asked for two weeks.
Monday, September 9
Why is the culture of farmer so competitive?
What if getting a job were simple and easy?
What if getting a job weren’t stressful?
What if I found a perfect culture fit?
Why can’t more non-corporate companies come to career fair?
Tuesday, September 10
Why is career fair so early this year?
What if students didn’t stress out about career fair?
What if eating healthy were fun and easy
What if cooking weren’t super time consuming?
What if I weren’t constantly sleep deprived?
Wednesday, September 11
Why do all students dress the same at career fair?
Why am I so tired all of the time?
Why doesn’t the mess on our front porch bother anyone else enough to clean it?
Why can’t Clifton be safer?
What are other ways to get my car load of things back to Mason without stopping in Clifton on Saturday?
Thursday, September 12
How might I better encourage my roommates to clean up after themselves?
How might we address the spider problem in our house?
What can I do to understand any of the readings for my women’s studies class when I am forced to “read 60 pages” of complete jargon?
Why haven’t I taken the time to learn to cook?
Why hasn’t Meera responded to me?
Friday, September 13
Why isn’t Andrew picking up on my signals that I am not in the slightest bit interested in him?
Will it be worth waking up super early tomorrow to watch the UC vs. Miami game?
What is another way to see my mom since she is too busy to see me on Saturday when I am home?
Will I actually be able to train enough for the half marathon coming up in a few months?
Why haven’t I taken the time to learn to dance?
Saturday, September 14
Why is drinking such a social thing?
Why do people feel like they need to drink in order to fit in at college?
Why is Miami so bad at football?
What makes music so powerful that it can make me cry?
How beneficial will asking these questions each day actually be?
Sunday, September 15
Why can’t people just be nice to each other and not make it awkward?
Why do I always leave my homework to be done on Sunday when I have an entire weekend?
Why does ADPi make me go to these horribly long retreats every semester?
Have you actually been more present this semester by being more conscious of it?
Why don’t I make more of a conscious effort to keep up with my friends from years ago?
Monday, September 16
Why is everyone already getting sick?
Why do I have so little motivation right now?
Why do I always seem thirsty?
How might I better prepare for my daily runs?
How might I better be motivated to run for longer periods of time?
Tuesday, September 17
How might I cook more efficient, yet healthy dinners?
How might I get to know my neighbors better?
How might I feel less tired all of the time?
How might I get a better night’s rest?
How might I feel more motivated to take on senior year?
Wednesday, September 18
How might I spend less money but still get the same value in food?
How might I figure out the best option for my future career?
How might I feel motivated to enjoy reading again?
How might I make working at the law firm more fun?
How might I interview better for phone interviews?
Thursday, September 19
How might I find better music suggestions?
How might I most efficiently navigate the work that 351 requires of me?
How might I feel more confident and comfortable with my stomach and arms?
How might I creatively approach the PJ&J C4 assignment?
How might I approach the PB&J assignment in the most efficient way possible?
Friday, September 20
Why can’t I feel motivated to do any work on Fridays?
What if I started listening to rap music and seeing how it made me feel differently?
Why do I hate country music so much?
Why do some people love country music so much?
What if I explored how some different types of music changed my creative press and how productive I was able to be?
Saturday, September 21
What if I confronted Reed?
What is the worst that could happen?
What is the best that could happen?
What if I asked Conger?
Why do we have 4 stickers in that class - is there an actual reason behind that number?
Sunday, September 22
What is the most important part of fall break - people or place or expenses?
What if we could make fall break as cheap as possible and still have a good time?
How might we please all 15 people interested in going on fall break?
How might we best handle meals while on fall break?
How might we maximize our time in Nashville?
Questioning is such a simple tool. What if I not only had these thoughts but started acting on them too? How much could asking 5 simple questions each day potentially change my life? Intentions matter. Ask more dangerous questions and seek answers. Curiosity can get you to new place you never imagined.

Kings Landing is a city of luxury, which is odd considering that if you don’t own a multi-million dollar corporation you’re probably a detective or work in a bar, maybe a coffee house if you’re lucky. The rich and the beautiful live lives full of drama, intrigue and passion, and Kings Landing is a city full of the rich and the beautiful. Sure, those who live there have their share of bad experiences, babies being switched at birth, kidnappings, being held at gun point, stalkers, the woman who thinks she’s a witch, heck there’s even a man who keeps getting killed but miraculously continues to return somehow, so behind all the glitz and glam Kings Landing is really just your typical city.
At least that’s the story being portrayed to millions of viewers across Westeros every single day when they tune into WBC’s top rated, and longest running, soap opera The Bold and The Restless.

Fast Fashion and It’s Cost
In 2019, one can walk into their local mall and see the styles they saw on their favorite influencer’s instagram page within weeks of posting for a fraction of the price of the original styles. This is a result of a 21st century phenomenon which has come to be referred to as “fast fashion”. Fast fashion can be defined as a quick response apparel manufacturing and retailing business model that relies on cheap offshore human labor. It has shifted within the last 50 years as companies have increasingly moved production offshore. Companies have chosen this route of business in order cut down production costs and bring trendier styles to consumers at a faster rate and at a lower price point. This “make-take-waste” model has had a major negative environmental impact and has also created what is arguably a hidden humanitarian crisis involving the laborers who produce these clothes. Additionally, those on the top of the fast fashion chain who buy the clothes, are negatively impacted financially and mentally.

Though sentiment on the issue varies, the science behind fast fashion’s environmental impact are undeniable. “The True Cost”, a documentary about the impact of the fashion industry on the world, highlights these impacts. The documentary showcases the environmental effects of a tanning chemical, chromium 6 in Kanpur, India. Run off from tanning factories that contain chromium six flow into “local farming and even drinking water”. Not only does this negatively affect agriculture but also the health of the individuals living in these places. An array of health issues and life threatening diseases have plagued the people of Kanpur as a result of this chemical.

The documentary also touches on genetically modified cotton and how it has been used by corporations to generate more profit from farmers in developing countries. Not only does this create financial woes for farmers but it also negatively affected their crops’ response to pesticides. Farmers have has no choice but to use more and more pesticides, causing birth defects, mental illness, and cancer.

According to The True Cost, Americans contribute 11 million tons of non-biodegradable textile waste to landfills annually. The sharp increase in consumption of apparel has contributed a major amount to the world’s landfills. The documentary emphasizes how this will only get worse as clothes become more disposable.

The destruction caused by fast fashion reaches much further than the health of the planet and into the health of the societies that administer the manufacturing. In 2013, a nine-story apparel manufacturing factory collapsed in Dhaka, Bangladesh killing over 1,1000 workers and leaving over 2,400 injured. A BBC documentary, Clothes to Die For highlighted the disregard for the safety and humanity of the garment workers who died in this disaster.
Tumblr media
(Via: Wikipedia)
The documentary showed that workers had no choice but to go to work even though it was unsafe because they were told they would lose their jobs. On the surface this may seem like an isolated accident, but it symbolizes of the prioritization of faster, cheaper production at the expense of the lives of workers. Bangladesh offers some of the cheapest labor in the world. In “The True Cost”,a Bangladeshi worker tearfully spoke on the struggle of garment workers. The Bangladeshi worker expressed “I believe that these clothes are produced by our blood. A lot of garment workers die in different accidents. (...) We want better working conditions so that everyone becomes aware”. It is clear that garment workers in developing countries not only want better working conditions but need them in order to survive.
There is an alternative to the inhumane conditions in the current fast fashion manufacturing practices. The True Cost demonstrated this with Safia Minney, CEO of People Tree, a fair trade fashion brand. Minney along with other fair trade organizations prioritize the health, safety, and environment in their production of apparel. She calls fair trade a “citizen’s response to correcting the social injustice in an international trading system (...) where workers and farmers are not paid a living wage, and where the environment isn’t considered at all”.

The negative consequences of the fast fashion business model do not only affect the workers in developing countries like Bangladesh but also the consumers in Western nations. In “The True Cost”, Tim Kasser PhD, a professor in Psychology at Knox College, stated that the fast fashion advertising industry suggests to consumers everyday that “materialism, and the pursuit of possessions, and owning stuff is what is going to make us happy” when in fact he reveals that studies show that it induces more depression and anxiety. Kasser demonstrated how fast fashion advertising can actually be detrimental to the mental state of consumers. Guido Brera, an investment investment manager, explained that with the rise of fast fashion and the decrease in the price of clothes, the middle class has become smaller and smaller. Brera also claimed that because “the things that people really need are very costly, like a home, like study (education), like life insurance”, while things that people do not really need have become increasingly cheap.
In 2019, we can get access to cheap clothes faster and easier than we ever could before, but we also have access to information faster and easier than ever before. As 21st century citizens we are capable of being responsible for what we consume. The demand for fashion will never go away, but the way we supply those demands can change.

The Washington Center (TWC) runs an internship program in Washington, D.C., that is open to all UW undergraduates (all majors welcome) and provides comprehensive service, including internship placement and housing. Placements include government agencies, corporations, nonprofits, museums, arts organizations, and international organizations. Hundreds of UW students have participated in this program since UW's affiliation in 1977, and many made connections that led to post-degree employment. At the informational meetings, a Washington Center representative and I will discuss the  structure of the program, scholarships, the application process, and UW credit. The program is affordable for many students. UW WA State residents receive a $2500 scholarship that makes the cost of attending the program comparable to participating in many study abroad programs. UW international students and residents of other states receive a $1000 scholarship and may pay less for this program than the estimated cost of attending UW for a quarter.
The program runs in summer, autumn and spring. Additional scholarships may be available for students interested in the autumn or spring programs. TWC's facilities are accessible to students who have disabilities. In addition, their Disability Services Coordinator will assist with accommodation at the internship and programming sites. These are the upcoming application deadlines for summer and autumn:   Summer 2020 (Jun-Aug):  Early, Feb 19; Regular, Mar 18
Autumn 2020 (Aug-Dec): Early, Apr 8; Regular May 6   Regardless of your major, there is an internship in D.C. for you! Whether you want to do an internship this year or in three years, come to an information session to learn more. If you can't make it, contact me, Meera Roy, for an appointment (available online at   https://depts.washington.edu/polsadvc/signup.php -- you can change the week at the top of the screen--or you can email me for an appointment time). Program information is also available at TWC's website, www.twc.edu.

Episode 1: Dragonstone
Right guys I know you’ll have already watched this but look I only just started this blog and I can’t miss the first episode off also you will benefit from my insights regardless.
!!!! I have been in a state of extreme agitation all year and I can’t actually cope with the fact that it’s here. I am not emotionally prepared and do not know what I just saw.
Scene 1: Did everyone else not realise that was Arya and think we were in a flashback? I am so overwhelmed I am just right there in the moment I have no idea what’s about to happen. Then all those ratface (rats are intelligent moral creatures but you know what I mean) Freys start coughing up their own lower organs!! When did Arya learn about poisons? Was her training montage long enough to justify this?? I guess it was! And I know the Freys have deathsentence hospitality karma but baking your sons in a pie and feeding it to you and then dressing up in your corpse and poisoning your entire family - is that an eye for an eye according to whichever god is keeping score in this case? I guess possibly!
Tumblr media
This recap blog is going to have an eye for History and Fable (matters which I know only very modest amounts about but there is google) and the sparknotes on Titus Andronicus on which the pie move is based indicates that it may lead to an ambivalent conclusion:
[After a succession of grisly heinous acts of reciprocal violence, Titus] tricks [Tamora, Queen of the Goths], captures her sons, kills them, and makes pie out of them. He feeds this pie to their mother in the final scene, after which he kills both Tamora and Lavinia, his own daughter. A rash of killings ensue; the only people left alive are Marcus [Titus’ brother], Lucius [Titus’ son], Young Lucius [his son], and Aaron [Tamora’s lover]. Lucius has the unrepentant Aaron buried alive, and Tamora's corpse thrown to the beasts. He becomes the new emperor of Rome.
This does not end well for the pie baker, though I suppose his kin are the ones who ultimately triumph. My male friends will often assume that I, a woman, feel empowered and liberated by the character of Arya, the traumatised magical child murderer. Not so, friends. My favourite liberated Game of Thrones #strongfemalecharacter is the lost unlamented Ros, sex worker from the north invented for TV for the purposes of the early sexposition-heavy plot who voyages down south with the Starks and whose illustrious sex spy career is wastefully cut short by Cunt Joffrey. Ros was working-class woman who fled the north before winter even came, whose talents were picked up by the farsighted Varys and who would have made an incredible Kings Landing player had it not been for the misogyny of Joffrey and the script writers and the twat fans who think the TV has to be like the crappy books which I have not read. Rest in Power Ros, this blog is dedicated to you.
Anyway I haven’t really recapped anything yet and this blog is already overlong  so let’s get back to it.
Scene 2: The army of the north are coming!! This is too terrifying, it’s hot outside but I am wrapped in a blanket. There are multiple ice zombie giants as we all knew there would be. Let’s remember that like one living giant almost successfully broke through the gate at Castle Black during the wildling battle ages ago; multiple zombie giants are going to make fucking matchsticks of it no magic required, though they probably also have loads of that, those dragons need to get here pronto. Also why haven’t they iceblocked up the gate like Jon said they should ages ago??
Tumblr media
Scene 2.5 (s2 was a vision I guess) Commander Dolorous Edd opens the gate to Meera and Bran, and asks if they are wildlings. Why does it matter? Wildlings can all come in anyway, that’s very much the policy now. Also if anything Bran saying “you were at Hardhome” etc only makes him seem more like a wildling, and a scary one? Anyway, no-one cares / everyone is too spooked to stay outside for long and so thank god poor Meera in particular can have a massive eat and a sleep by the fire. She and her magic and fighting skills have been wasted on being a less effective Hodor / wheelchair substitute, I eagerly anticipate her being given a chance to shine now our kids are back to what passes for civilisation.
Scene 3: Jon and Sansa are still holding court with the whole Northern gentry from last season. At least all those guys look warm in that nice hall toasting their feet on Winterfell’s famous underfloor heating! That awful bloke from the Vale *googles it* Yohn Royce makes an extremely unreasonable and tactics-free suggestion to demolish some of the last strongholds between them and the wall because of “justice” or whatever. Sansa points out that the castles themselves didn’t commit crimes (top-notch statecraft) but suggests they be given to loyal families to punish treason and reward loyalty. Jon makes a generous decision to let the young Karstarks and Umbers stay in their homes despite their twatty dads, making the good and frankly biblical point that the sons shouldn’t be punished for their fathers’ sins. Sansa is unhappy about this and she is probably a better king than Jon, or rather, I think they are both good kings but need to team up and respect each other, which she is really keen to do but unfortunately is also a woman so this makes things harder for everyone because they have to unlearn misogyny first.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then she tells Littlefinger who barges in to their important conversation what would make her so happy was if he shut up and fucked off, and not to bother trying to get the last word, she’ll just assume it was clever. Which is a King’s Landing style burn! Please Jon, show that this queen is not wasted on the north. Also please Littlefinger, fuck off and die.
Scene 4:  I collapsed a couple of bits into one there but I am aware that this is too long already because of my Titus Andronicus and Roslove detour, for which I am unrepentant, tune back in next post for more of the same. ANYWAY, here she is, best villain in GoT. She may be evil, but who wouldn’t be in her position? Cersei marches over a map of Westeros telling Jaime she is already 5 moves ahead of him and has an Armada on the way headed by a man who is desperate to impress her. Everyone thinks Jaime is going to kill her, but might she not kill Jaime? She absolutely has no further fucks to give whatsoever and just wants power and revenge and to die a fabulous drunk old evil empress with ten husbands each more devoted and militarily useful than the last. I hope she dies much sooner than that! I also think she will because she can’t be the one to win the game of thrones. Can she?? Could the alcoholic childless widow of the usurper king really win in the end? She could have more children if she could be bothered probably, if she was in a mood to consider dynastic matters. In this scene, she is not, and is just savouring the prospect of ruling the world asap and as bloodily as you like.
Tumblr media
Scene 5: And here he fucking is! They really did cut down every tree on the Iron Islands! How did they throw this fleet together so quickly! It does not look like they cut corners! Those boats are fucking terrifying!
Tumblr media
Is this even scene 5? Cersei and Jaime are immediately there, standing on the balcony, watching Euron’s terrifying Armada approach. Everything is happening extremely fast. This is not like the midseasons when everyone was walking painfully slowly around the Riverlands. Why do they have to get it all over as quickly as possible? Have they run out of money? I am no less overwhelmed than ever.
Scene 6: Thesp Goth Euron woos Cersei by saying she’s the most beautiful woman in the world and promising to give her a priceless gift to get to her woman’s heart. This is very tacky but it kind of confirms her power as actual queen and is a highpoint so far since the nadir of the Walk of Shame. Do you think the wildfire explosion of all the King’s Landing gentry and the Sparrows was the highpoint? Maybe that was the violence highpoint, and this is the statecraft highpoint. Also Euron’s “gift” is going to be more violence, and he also offers up his “two good hands,” at which Jaime, on behalf of us all, recoils.
Tumblr media
Cersei seems likely to graciously accept the first gift before declining the second. Has her Sparrows experience taught her not to unleash forces against her enemies which she then cannot control and which then turn on her? Probably not!
I hate that sleazy prat Euron and can’t believe that Fantasizr drafted him into my Game of Game of Thrones league. Any points I get for him are a badge of shame (I got 15 for this scene).
Scene 7: Sam stars in music video soup poop library montage! Sam during this is confirmed as the fat nerd with a goatee and slicked back hair avatar of the show’s condescending idea of what a GoT fan looks like, corroborating the theory that Sam is actually the narrator / the Perspective from which the story is seen. Sam nicks some useful books after Jim Broadbent tells him he believes but doesn’t care that the White Walkers and the Long Night are coming. There is science going on in the Citadel, medical science involving weighing organs. This science needs to be more applied. Incidentally everyone, Game of Thrones is not medieval, it is Early Modern:
What Martin actually gives us is a fantasy version of what the historian Alfred Crosby called the Post-Columbian exchange: the globalizing epoch of the 16th and 17th centuries. A world where merchants trade exotic drugs and spices between continents, where professional standing armies can number in the tens or hundreds of thousands, where scholars study the stars via telescopes, and proto-corporations like the Iron Bank of Braavos and the Spicers of Qarth control global trade. It’s also a world of slavery on a gigantic scale, and huge wars that disrupt daily life to an unprecedented degree.
[…] even the medieval aesthetics of the show owes a debt to the 16th and 17th centuries. As any scholar of the The Fairie Queene will tell you, Renaissance literature is replete with tales of chivalry, jousting, dragon-slaying, and magic. Writers from Spencer to Cervantes displayed and abiding fascination with these medieval tropes precisely because they were witnessing their demise. And our modern conception of the Middle Ages, which emerged out of the Victorians’ fascination with Neo-Gothic and Pre-Raphaelite aesthetics, was actually based upon these early modern retellings of medieval life.
So why, outside of dorky pedantry, does any of this matter? Because fantasy worlds are never just fantasy. They appeal to us because they refract our own histories and speak to contemporary interests. George R.R. Martin’s fantasy has grown to enormous popularity in part because of its modernity, not its “medieviality.”
Scene 8: Back at Winterfell, we get to see Tormund’s brilliant face he puts on when he looks at Brienne:
Tumblr media
To me this is adorable rather than creepy because though Tormund is a sex pest, it feels like this comes from a place of respect and genuine adoration. Also Brienne could dispatch him devastatingly before he knew what was happening and he absolutely knows it.
Actually this scene is where Sansa delivers her burn to Littlefinger, but onwards!
Scene 9: The unforgivable casting and all-round existence of Ed Sheeran aside, this scene was bad because of the insufferably one-dimensional laid-on-thick Simple Honest Country Blokeness of the Lannister soldiers. Arya is obviously considering whether or not to kill them, do you think? But they are so Nice she reconsiders.
Tumblr media
The fact that she is still more than capable of affection, forming relationships, caring about people and so on, as also witnessed by that actor mother figure she befriended last season, indicates that despite ongoing trauma (actor murdered horribly in front of her, like all her friends) she is not the cold psycho she sometimes pretends she is. She is not Cersei (yet anyway). This is the point of this scene. Also to confirm that she is working through her list and Cersei is next.
Scene 10: More redemption of traumatised killer characters! The Hound is riding with the Brotherhood Without Banners in a frozen bucolic twilight. What an adorable combo! Lines like “Why are you always in such a foul mood?” “Experience” and “There is no Divine Justice, you dumb cunt. If there was, you’d be dead” indicate that the BwB bring out the best in my bff @lasophus’ favourite character. They stop at the place where The Hound robbed those innocent country folk a few seasons back, as we were reminded of in the excitingly scored Previously sequence at the beginning. They have subsequently died of starvation-related causes as he and Arya predicted they would at the time. The Hound is now sorry and sees a vision in the flames of the Army of the Dead and buries the bodies of his victims and says some adorable words over them. The Hound’s redemption story is much more moving and interesting and spiritual than Jaime’s (a plotline I name “Choozy the Floozy” because of its Manichean orbit around his two love interests Evil Cersei and Good Brienne). But meanwhile the dramatic irony is killing us viewers at home! That poor little girl and her dad are going to rise as wights!!
Scene 11: Sam fails to impress by finding out in the stolen restricted classified high-importance books that he was sent to the Citadel to read something that Stannis already told everyone but they ignored because he was too boring to listen to (what a merciful death that was at the hands of Can She Do No Wrong Brienne): Dragonstone needs to become an opencast Dragonglass mine asap. Which is a pity as Dragonstone is such an arresting work in the ‘dragon-brutalist’ style popular at the time of Aegon the Conquerer (which we will be admiring in the next scene but one). Sam fires off a raven to Jon which I hope will not be intercepted by some library rules-stickler maesters.
Tumblr media
Also it’s nice to see Gilly and Little Sam looking so well-dressed and -fed in this scene. Gilly, a sexual abuse survivor subaltern from a wintry hellhole with an evil father and who would otherwise have become an ice zombie by now, is far, far south, in a land where you can still get away with dressing lightly, inside a city which according to awoiaf “is surrounded by massive, thick, high stone walls.” Also their flat looks really nice.
Tumblr media
Well done Gilly.
Scene 12: Jorah! Things have not gone well for you! Jorah is an obsessively lovelorn prisoner in a well-regulated, proto-humane leper colony. I guess actually that going to the seat of all worldly learning was a good move, but your terrible disease is going to need more than trolley gruel and a clean cell to be cured. Thankfully Our Sam is wearing gloves when Jorah does his unnecessarily dramatic Ghoul Grab.
Scene 13: Our queen is coming home and everyone has put on eyeliner for the occasion! The general drift of the season’s wardrobe has been towards a kind of moody, shoulderpads-and-eyemakeup, subdued-charcoal-tones vibe. Everyone is looking great. Especially Cersei actually when she was receiving (at safe distance) Euron, and now Daenerys is looking wonderful too, with fine dragony detailing on her the tips of her shoulderpads. Actually Sansa had this look too, “Goth Military Queen” is clearly going to be massive this season.
Tumblr media
Daenerys has a moving moment with the Westerosi sand when she comes ashore. We have been waiting 6 seasons for this. Oh my god.
Tumblr media
I hope all the dragonglass mining won’t damage these amazing rock formations too much!
Tumblr media
This scene is mainly going to be recapped in screenshots.
Tumblr media
A gorgeous example of Early Modern Dragon Brutalism.
