Time for medieval monsters! Demons and dragons, fanciful centaurs and unicorns - monsters played a central role in medieval societies, with many appearing on the pages of illuminated manuscripts. Check out the dragons and sea creatures in the Prayer Book of Charles the Bold.

Prayer book of Charles the Bold is a small book, measuring 12.4 × 9.2 cm (4 7/8 × 3 5/8 in.) The miniatures are incredibly detailed and require close looking. The. In the Fine Arts Library’s Special Collections, we have a facsimile of the original illuminated manuscript, which is in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, CA.

I’m studying these guys and the amount of people that legitimately believed that these creatures existed in the East is amazing. So much so that some people would fabricated events where they met such creatures, to give legitimacy to their travel journals. In order from left to right these guys are; 

Monopod (one foot) first mentioned in the work of Pliny the Elder then picked up by Isidore of Seville. They are said to live in Ethiopia to be extremely fast and to occasionally use their one foot to make shade for themselves

Cyclops (one eye) originally from Roman and Greek mythology. they are said to live in some islands in Greece. 

Gemini (two-headed child) twins were often represented as having one body and two heads, don’t ask, I don’t know  

Blemmyae ( guy with its face on his torso) they were believed to be found in Libya and Ethiopia.

Cynocephali (dog head) usually used as a metaphor, to suggest lack of civilisation. They could be found in Scandinavia and Africa.

In my happy place...the @clevelandmuseumofart . The exhibit , #medievalmonsters is really quite extraordinary ...a recounting of mans history with the things that terrify him and are alive within his own psyche. I’m a bit of a medievalist though so I tend to overlook the gore simply to immerse myself in the beauty of the craftsmanship. That being said it is almost impossible to not draw parallels between the fear and dehumanization of the “ other”... in their case the “other” being Jews and Muslims and what is happening in our world today. It is astonishing to see history repeating itself once again. Sadly... as it was it was in the 14th century, the glorious story of Jesus and his wondrous teachings are once again being used to simply destroy the heart and soul of anyone who is “the other”. It is amazing to me when art is just so incredibly beautiful and so incredibly terrifying at the exact same time.
