Ura Zelda on the Famicom Disk System A 1987 video game book by JICC lists "Ura Legend of Zelda" 裏ゼルダの伝説 on the cover for a multipage feature.
裏 = Ura (otherside/back/reverse) https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E8%A3%8F#Noun
ゼルダの伝説 = Legend of Zelda
https://flickr.com/photos/historyofhyrule/51970649809/in/album-72177720297725460/…
Pg63 starts the feature on "Ura Zelda" and how to access it by entering the name "ZELDA"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Under this section titled 裏ゼル直行健 (Ura Zelda Command? Line?), the last line basically reads
裏ゼル行きのコマンドは左の写真を見ながら打ち込んてチョンマゲ!
"While looking at the photo on the left, type in the command to go to Ura Zelda, and you'll be fine!"
Tumblr media
pg 64-65 Ura Zelda
The first paragraph reads:
"It's nice that the reverse side is even more addictive than the front side!! After all, the entrance to the labyrinth is different, and the dungeon inside is different. On top of that, it's only natural that the enemies that appear will change and the items you'll get will differ!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
pg 66 The dungeon coverage begins and the intro reads:
"This is the complete Ura Zelda (backside Zelda) capture method taught directly by Kamesenmatsu!! By the way, did you know that the shape of the labyrinth in Ura Zelda is called ZELDA in English!! What a great find!!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at that 裏 character for "Ura" next to the Zelda logo.

"The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time GC" was distributed exclusively as a pre-order bonus for "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker" released in 2002. "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time GC Ura", commonly known as "Ura Zelda", is recorded in it." https://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/aqej/#/forall/

"The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Ura", commonly known as "Ura Zelda" - The puzzles of the dungeons have been redesigned from the surface world, and there are maps with different types and numbers of enemies that appear.

I give Ocarina of Time the cold shoulder pretty often but Master Quest Spirit Temple might be one of the best Zelda Dungeons ever designed.

shoutout to taigen for being the most expressive character in the entire show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you will never not know whatever the hell he is feeling or thinking at the moment because he will literally tell you (either very earnestly like when he traumadumps to mizu or very sarcastically which is the other 99% of the time he talks to mizu) or you will see it plain as day on his face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is the textbook definition of a man wearing his heart on his sleeve. look in the dictionary for what a "simple man" means and you will find taigen's face there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
like once you cut through the massive ego and pompousness he uses to mask his own insecurities and traumas, he is literally just some guy. he's not evil or stupid. not super kind or super smart either. an asshole but not the worst there is. he's incredibly skilled but he's not the strongest ever or even the most skilled. he is literally! just a guy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
y'all can hate him all you want but let's be real, taigen is actually the most relatable character out of everyone. like this man is POOR, he is PATHETIC, he is COMPLAINING ALL THE TIME, and most of all he is OBSESSED WITH MIZU. if that shit ain't relatable idk what is.

DPXDC Prompt #142 Part 2
His parents had spent years working on their portal, to the point where they were neglecting their own children. Danny didn’t know any better, neither did Jazz. To them it was just how their family ran and for the most part it worked for them. It allowed Danny to really study space and the Stars. His room was covered with different ship models on the shelves, glow in the dark stars on the ceiling and posters on the walls.
Jazz had similarly explored her own thoughts and topics as she studied Psychology. Her room was more feminine but still had a certain scientific decorum to it.
He never thought that he’d suddenly be ripped from all the things he loved. But here he was with the trench coat man, instead of taking some biology class or something.
“What happened with the portal?” Danny asked.
The man took a long sigh, “listen… quite a lot of shit went down after your accident.”
“That tells me nothing,” Danny glared at the man.
“I get your upset kid, but let me at least know your name. Mine's John Constantine,”
“…Danny,” Danny muttered after a moment. He wasn’t sure he trusted the man but he guessed he had no choice. He was also noticing he felt a bit off, it was the weirdest gut feeling and Danny was having trouble telling exactly what the feeling was. It was like the feeling was telling him to trust John, although at the same time John had this weird feeling about him that had Danny feeling weary. He decided to trust John just a little, hopefully it got him back home, after a moment Danny spoke again, “…Can you at least tell me if the portal worked?”
The room was silent for a moment and then John spoke “Alright, fine, I’ll tell you what happened but some background first, do you know who the ancients are?”
The name didn’t sound familiar, “Ancients? Like Ancient Aliens or something?”
“No, no…” John took a swig from a flask in his pocket and then started fiddled with an unlit cigarette he pulled from a different pocket. He then looked Danny up and down, “You don’t know the first thing about the infinite realms do you?”
“The what?” None of this was making any sense and the more Danny talked to this guy the more he was getting a feeling of dread in the pit of his stomach. Something about this conversation felt wrong, like Danny should know all of this already but he just didn’t.
“Right well… I guess the easiest way to explain this is the portal your parents made was to the infinite realms.” John said, putting the cigarette in his mouth.
“My parents called it the Ghost Zone.” Danny muttered.
John seemed to chuckle at that, “I mean it is mainly inhabited by ghosts, however they aren’t the only ones, far from it in fact. I’m sorry but… I couldn’t allow your parents unlimited access to the realms. I had to disable it and prevent it from being reactivated.”
Danny felt a little disheartened after hearing that, he guessed John was probably right though. He remembered hearing his parents talk about how they’d dissect every ghost they found to study them. The bully’s at his school often bullied Danny over it especially after his dad and mom would continually embarrass him on parent teacher nights and on field trips.
Danny let out a small sigh, “so when can I go home?”
John looked a little surprised, his eyebrow quirked up, “so you're unaware of your situation right now?”
“Situation?” Danny trailed off, he remembered getting shocked and then he remembered waking up here, “where are we?”
John let out another sigh, “shit, well from my research you're supposed to know everything about your powers when you wake up.”
This made no sense to Danny, powers? Danny didn’t have powers, he didn't have the meta-gene.
“Powers? I don’t have the meta-gene. I think you have the wrong person.” Danny stated as he folded his arms in front of himself.
“Then how are you floating?” John asked with a smirk.
Danny looked down and he indeed was floating just an inch off the bed, he wondered when that started but the feeling threw him off a little as he stumbled a little trying to keep himself upright. It didn’t work and he fell back down on the bed with a little thud. He turned to see John watching him with a small hint of amusement in his eyes.
“What am I?” Danny asked, his voice small and a little panicked.
“You, Danny Fenton, are an Ancient. I know the term makes it seem like you're old but the term is more because your people are ancient in age.” The explanation made no sense to Danny but he could somehow float now. He thought the term ‘Ancient’ was a little much for some floating powers.

More Jellal joining Fairy Tail headcanons:
-Master Makarov absolutely loves him. Jellal causes almost no problems, has never destroyed the guild, helps cleanup after brawls, etc. Makarov would kill for him at this point
-being in the guild has very positively affected his mental health. He’s used to them being kind to him in passing. But he always thought it was just cause of his past with Erza, but now that he’s a member he sees that they genuinely love and respect him.
-Mira and Cana gave him one week to get adjusted before they started relentlessly teasing him. Cana has never called him by his real name. It’s always Jelly bean, Erza’s boyfriend, Jello Shot, etc
-Jellal gets referred to as “Erza’s boyfriend” constantly. Both of them get red and say it’s not like that but Fairy Tail is manifesting.
-Almost every team has fought to get Jellal on their team. He is happy to help out but always reminds them he has his own team.
-Laxus insists that he’s going to steal Jellal from Erza and is almost always seen with his arm around Jellal’s shoulders.
-Jellal and Laxus have quite the bromance.
-He has so many rumors about him. Like literally he cannot even sneeze without someone talking about it.
-Fairy Tail does not care that Jellal isn’t a wizard saint anymore. They refer to him as such and brag about it to other guilds.
- Crime Sorciere is very protective over him. So every time anyone jokes about stealing Jellal from them. They all jump to action causing several fights to break out (it's playful but also he is their baby girl)

The mythical Ura Zelda, and the original Ura Zelda on the NES
"Ura Zelda" is known as the 64DD expansion for Zelda: Ocarina of Time that was eventually released as "Master Quest" on GameCube. But in Japan, it was still called "Ura Zelda", as "Master Quest" was just a localized name. But it wasn't the first "Ura Zelda" in the series! 裏 = Ura (reverse/back/otherside) https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E8%A3%8F#Noun…
The Japanese release of Master Quest was still called "Ura" (裏), the character is on the logo. It was localized in English as "Master Quest" which sounds like a play of the localized term of "2nd QUEST" on the NES Zelda.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Japanese trailer for Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D references the GameCube release, and the narrator refers to the second challenging version as "Ura Zelda" twice. 裏 (Ura) is still part of the the logo.
youtube
The English localization of this trailer refers to "Master Quest" as a "Second Adventure" hidden in the game. "Only those who cleared the original story can play the Master Quest".
youtube
The NES Zelda had a "2nd Quest", where upon beating the game, you're presented with a new quest with 9 new/rearranged challenging dungeons. The overworld had minor changes here and there, but the layout mostly the same.
In the Spirit Tracks Iwata Asks interview, Takashi Tezuka talks about how the 2nd Quest of the FDS Zelda was the result of a mistake of only using 1 side of the disk.
In the Japanese transcript, they're actually using the term "Ura" 裏.
https://nintendo.co.jp/ds/interview/bkij/vol2/index6.html… https://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/ds/zelda/1/5/
The Legend of Zelda originally released for the Famicom Disk System. The Disks contained data on both sides, and because Takashi Tezuka only used one side (half), it was decided to create the "Second Quest", or "Ura Zelda" on the other half.
裏 = Ura
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Iwata: So this is the Second Quest resulting from Tezuka-san's mistake...
Iwata: This is the "Ura Zelda" that Tezuka made by mistake...
岩田: 手塚さんが間違ってできた『裏ゼルダ』がコレ・・・。
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Second Quest: A second adventure of greater difficulty prepared for players who had cleared the original quest in The Legend of Zelda.
"Ura Zelda" = A high difficulty mode prepared for players who have cleared the normal "The Legend of Zelda".
I had heard some time ago second hand that the 2nd Quest in Zelda 1 was called "Ura Zelda" in Japan. The Japanese transcript of the Iwata Asks interview confirms it. I think if you mention "Ura Zelda" to someone in Japan before N64, they'd think about the "2nd Quest" on Famicom.
Going by the definition of "Ura" as "back", "other side", "reverse side", not only is the second adventure in Zelda 1 like another, parallel world compared to the first quest, its literally contained on the other side of the disk on the Famicom Disk System that you flip over. https://legendsoflocalization.com/the-legend-of-zelda/graphics/
Tumblr media
So the entire intent of "Ura Zelda" on the 64DD as an addon for Ocarina of Time goes all the way back to the "2nd Quest" of the NES/Famicom Disk System version, to create a second, more challenging adventure with new dungeons. Which is what Miyamoto and Aonuma consistently said.
http://angelfire.com/games5/makzelda/interviews/zgmiyamotosw99.html…
Nintendo.com-1999
Miyamoto: The story in "Ura Zelda" will be similar to Ocarina of Time but with new maps and scenarios. "Ura Zelda" will use the existing Ocarina of Time cartridge but with different dungeons, and new locations for the treasures.
Incite magazine Dec 1999
https://archive.org/details/incite-video-gaming-1-december-1999/page/84/mode/2up?view=theater… Miyamoto: Well, simply put, every time you go into a dungeon, the tasks will be different. If there was a treasure chest in a certain location the last time you went in, then the next time you in it won’t be there.
This quote is correct. After playing Ocarina for the first time, every time you go into one of the new dungeons in URA Zelda, they'll be rearranged with chests in different places, and different paths. This became exaggerated with people thinking he meant random dungeons.
A while back I compiled several interview quotes to show the consistent message Nintendo gave about Ura Zelda/Master Quest being about re-arranged dungeons. https://nteamhero.tumblr.com/post/102117951167/zelda-gaiden-majoras-mask-and-ura-zelda-another…
Ura Zelda is described as a parody, 2nd Quest, "Another" Zelda, a WaZelda, flip-side.
Nintendo never promised more than re-arranged dungeons for "Ura Zelda". Fan speculation (and gaming press) made "Ura Zelda" more mythical than it was, often confusing early builds and cut content for Ocarina of Time (ex. Unicorn fountain) as "Ura Zelda" content.
Sometimes gaming press like IGN and some European magazines playing telephone would confuse Ura Zelda and Zelda Gaiden (Majora's Mask).
https://ign.com/articles/1999/08/21/gaiden-and-ura-zelda-split… "Miyamoto confirms that Zelda Gaiden and the 64DD "Ura Zelda" are two separate games."
IGN's first impressions of the GC release compare Master Quest to the 2nd Quest of the original Zelda. https://ign.com/articles/2002/11/28/ocarina-of-time-and-ura-zelda-arrive…
"Ura seems to be like a 2nd Quest for Ocarina of Time, with the most notable changes involving item placement and puzzles in the dungeons"
Tumblr media
An IGN interview with Miyamoto mentioning that they might have to release a special edition in the future if the 64DD doesn't come out. A few IGN articles use the term "Another Zelda" as translation for "Ura Zelda", which supposedly isn't correct. https://ign.com/articles/1998/11/18/zelda-dd-the-other-adventure…
Similarly, Nintendo Power's coverage of the original Zelda's second quest describes it as "Another World". The feature mentions that the main differences are that the Underworld dungeons are vastly different, and the placement of the items in the dungeons.
https://archive.org/details/NintendoPower1988-2004/Nintendo%20Power%20Issue%20001%20%28July-August%201988%29/page/n25/mode/2up
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the whole point of "Ura Zelda" as an expansion for Ocarina of Time for the 64DD was to recreate the concept of the 2nd Quest of the original Zelda on N64, by making a new set of re-arranged dungeons, as a challenging second quest, which is what Miyamoto consistently said.
Ura Zelda is totally different in concept than the Zelda 64/Ocarina of Time that would have been developed originally for the 64DD and used its specs before moving to cartridge. What fans imagined was probably closer to Majora's Mask.
