Want to see more interpretations of Lovecraft’s elder things draw from sea cucumbers and sea anemones. I can’t help but notice a lot of similarities between them:
Tube/barrel shaped body
Frond of tentacles at the top of the body
All early in Earth’s prehistory, predating the dinosaurs
Echinoderms and Elder Things both display a capacity for deep sea and Antarctic survival
Elder Things’ flipper-like feet could be roughly analogous to a sea anemone’s sucker
Side tentacles and ‘ridges’ parallel sea cucumber lateral silica
‘Wings’ similar to the fins of the transparent sea cucumber? (Would function underwater as well as for interplanetary flight.)
Eyes on tentacles actually just discoloration such as with the giant anemone? (Unlikely; a functionally blind species would have no need for visual communication such as hieroglyphics.)
