Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio (b.1466 or 1477-d.1516), 'Portrait of a Lady as Saint Lucy', oil on panel, c.1509, Italian, currently in the collection of the Museo Nacional Thyssen Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain.
The present portrait was in the collection of Count Febo Borromeo in Milan in 1932 when it was published by Berenson and included in his catalogue of the artist’s oeuvre. From there it passed to the Mercuria gallery in Lucerne, from where it was acquired for the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection in October 1934, appearing in the catalogues of the Collection from 1937. In 1935, following its acquisition, it was cleaned and various areas of old repainting removed. These had concealed the eye on a stick held by the young woman which relates her to Saint Lucy, possibly her patron saint. Boltraffio was inspired by Leonardo’s Belle Ferronière, albeit interpreting that model with considerable freedom. The present sitter emerges like Leonardo’s from the darkness but is more frontal than the Belle Ferronière. The light particularly emphasises her face, neck and breast, creating soft shadows such as those on the nose and left cheekbone, which become much darker and denser on her neck. Boltraffio gave this sitter very large eyes that look out at the spectator and a gentle smile, just visible at the edges of her mouth. It has been suggested that this painting is the one mentioned in a text by Lancino Curzio, which describes a portrait by Boltraffio of a beautiful young woman named Lucia. The description in that text, however, does not convincingly correspond to the present work. Among portraits attributed to Boltraffio is one in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow in which the artist again depicted a real person as a saint, in that case an idealised young man presented as Saint Sebastian. With his soft features and long hair, he has a thin gold halo and wears a delicate gold crown with an ear of corn in the centre. The present Portrait of a Lady as Saint Lucy has been dated to the end of the first decade of the 16th century by Maria Teresa Fiorio. - Mar Borobia (x)

The Story Of The Napoleon Diamond Necklace

The Story Of The Napoleon Diamond Necklace
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image by/from Cliff from Arlington, VA (Outside Washington DC), USA
The Napoleon Diamond Necklace is a diamond necklace commissioned by Napoleon I of France c. 1811-1812. It is currently on display in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., United States.
The Napoleon Diamond Necklace consists of 28 mine cut diamonds set into a single thread, with a fringe of alternating pendeloque and briolettes diamond cuts. The five pear-shaped pendoloques are each mounted below a small brilliant cut diamond. The four ovaline pendeloques are mounted above designs which incorporate 23 brilliant cut diamonds each. Each briolette mounting is set with 12 rose cut diamonds.
While the gems of the Napoleon Diamond Necklace have never been professionally graded by a lapidary (as they have never been removed from their mountings), infrared spectroscopic analysis of the diamonds has shown that they are primarily Type Ia. However, 13 of the 52 largest diamonds in the necklace are of the rare Type IIa variety. A number of the Type Ia diamonds show indications of sulfide crystal imperfections.
In 1810, Napoleon I of France divorced the Empress Josephine, as she proved to be incapable of producing an heir. He re-married two months later to Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria. Within a year, Marie Louise bore a son. To celebrate, in June 1811 Napoleon I commissioned the Napoleon Diamond Necklace from the Parisian jewellery firm Nitot et Fils, at a cost of 376,274 French francs. This sum was the equivalent of the Empress’s entire annual household budget. There are several contemporary portraits of Marie Louise wearing the Napoleon Diamond Necklace, including a number by the artists Francois Gerard and Giovan Battista Borghesi. Several years later, in 1815, Napoleon was exiled to Saint Helena. Marie Louise returned to Austria with the necklace and owned it until her death.
Upon the death of Marie Louise in 1847, the necklace passed to Archduchess Sophie of Austria, the wife of her brother Archduke Franz Karl of Austria. Two diamonds were removed from the necklace to shorten it, at the request of Princess Sophie. These diamonds were fitted to a pair of earrings, the location of which is now unknown. Following the death of Sophie in 1872, the Napoleon Diamond Necklace was jointly inherited by her three surviving sons, Archdukes Karl Ludwig, Ludwig Viktor, and Franz Joseph of Austria. Karl Ludwig later acquired his brothers’ stakes in the necklace, and upon his death in 1914 passed it to his third wife, Maria Theresa of Portugal.
At the start of the Great Depression in 1929, Maria Theresa engaged two people presenting themselves as “Colonel Townsend” and “Princess Baronti” to sell the necklace for US$450,000. Realising that the current economic conditions would make it almost impossible to reach the asking price, the pair began offers at $100,000, signing on Archduke Leopold of Habsburg, the destitute grandnephew of Maria Theresa, to vouch for the necklace’s authenticity. Deals were negotiated with the jewelers Harry Winston and Harry Berenson, but eventually the pair sold the necklace to David Michel of New York City for $60,000, of which the pair claimed $53,730 as expenses. When informed of the sale, Maria Theresa took the matter to court, eventually resulting in the recovery of the necklace, the jailing of Archduke Leopold, and the flight of Townsend and Baronti from the authorities.
After resolving the incident, Maria Theresa held the necklace until her death in 1944. Four years later, the Habsburg family sold it to the French industrialist Paul-Louis Weiller. In 1960, Weiller sold the Napoleon Diamond Necklace to Harry Winston, who believed that the historical value of the piece would make it more valuable than if the stones were removed and resold individually, as was common practice at the time. As such, he kept it intact, reselling it the same year to Marjorie Merriweather Post. Post donated the necklace to the Smithsonian Institution in 1962, and it has since remained on display at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., United States.

5 takeaways from CPAC’s Texas gathering
Tumblr media
CNN —
The Conservative Political Action Conference’s summer gathering in Dallas over the weekend showcased the hold former President Donald Trump – and the conspiracy theories he is touting – has over the Republican Party’s activist base.
In his 90-minute speech Sunday, Trump repeated his now-familiar lie that widespread voter fraud cost him the 2020 election.
Throughout the weekend, Republicans picked up on Trump’s themes, bashing President Joe Biden’s administration’s management of the border, seizing on the former President’s grievances against social media companies and complaining about critical race theory.
Some attendees were handed cards featuring a “7-pt. plan” to reinstall Trump as president by electing him speaker of the House and then removing President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris from power. A painting of Trump hugging and kissing the American flag was auctioned off for $25,000 from the CPAC stage.
And as Republicans considering 2024 presidential campaigns of their own sought to differentiate themselves from potential rivals, Trump continued to assert that he remains the leader of the party – the one and only leader of what he called “the greatest political movement in the history of our country.”
Politicization of Covid vaccines
The weekend gathering offered a vivid window into the political resistance Biden’s administration is encountering in its efforts to vaccinate Americans against Covid-19 – showcasing the growing opposition to vaccines among the conservative base.
Attendees at CPAC cheered author Alex Berenson when he noted that Biden’s administration is falling short of its goal of vaccinating 70% of adults by July 4.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s leading infectious disease expert, on CNN Sunday called the cheers “horrifying” and “almost frightening.”
“They’re cheering about someone saying that it’s a good thing for people not to try and save their lives,” Fauci said.
Conservatives in recent weeks have lambasted Biden for pushing the vaccines, mischaracterizing his push to enlist volunteers to go “literally knocking on doors” to encourage vaccinations. North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn bizarrely suggested in an interview with a right-wing outlet at CPAC that the Biden administration could eventually “go door to door to take your guns; they could go door to door to take your Bible.”
Trump, meanwhile, demanded credit for the vaccines, which were developed during his presidency. But the former President has not used any of his own political capital to urge his supporters to get vaccinated – even as Covid hospitalizations rise, particularly in red states where a larger share of adults are unvaccinated.
Denial of reality about January 6 riots
Increasingly, conservatives have hailed those who rioted at the Capitol on January 6 as heroes – downplaying violence against police officers and disputing the circumstances of the rebellion against Congress certifying Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.
Trump in recent weeks has attempted to revise the history of the riots. Ahead of his speech at CPAC, Trump appeared on Fox News, telling host Maria Bartiromo that those who attended his rally that day before storming the Capitol were “peaceful people.” He also claimed that Ashli Babbitt, the insurrectionist who was shot and killed at the Capitol while attempting to climb into the Speaker’s Lobby of the House, was a hero.
“Who is the person that shot an innocent, wonderful, incredible woman, a military woman, right in the head?” he said. “There is no repercussion – that were on the other side, it would be the biggest story in this country. Who shot Ashli Babbitt? People want to know and why.”
The events of January 6 led to Trump’s second impeachment. And in Dallas, he railed against Republicans who voted to impeach him – including Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, who was then the No. 3-ranking GOP House member.
“You have to live with her, I guess. Maybe not much longer,” Trump said, referring to primary challenges against Cheney in 2022.
Noem swipes at 2024 rivals
The early stages of the 2024 Republican presidential primary are unfolding along two tracks: One if Trump runs again and dominates; another if Trump passes and the party begins with a wide-open field.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem continued her aggressive pursuit of the second track with an unmistakeable swipe at potential 2024 rivals – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott – who took more restrictive approaches to the pandemic in their states.
“We’ve got Republican governors across this country pretending they didn’t shut down their states; that they didn’t close their regions; that they didn’t mandate masks,” Noem said. “Now I’m not picking fights with Republican governors. All I’m saying is that we need leaders with grit. That their first instinct is the right instinct.”
“Demand honesty from your leaders and make sure that every one of them is willing to make the tough decisions,” she said. “South Dakota did not do any of those (measures). We didn’t mandate. We trusted our people and it told them that personal responsibility was the best answer.”
DeSantis stands out in straw polls
DeSantis, the Florida governor, stood out as the clear second choice of CPAC attendees over the weekend – a very early indicator of his growing popularity with that portion of the party’s base.
CPAC conducted two straw polls: One that included Trump, and one that did not. Trump, as expected, easily won the straw poll in which he was included, with 70% support. But DeSantis finished well ahead of all other Republicans, with 21% support.
DeSantis cruised in the straw poll that did not include Trump. He got the backing of 68% of CPAC attendees, followed by former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at 5% and Donald Trump Jr. at 4%.
But it’s still Trump’s party
Still, at CPAC – where Trump got a rock star’s welcome – there is no mistaking the reality that the Republican Party’s base remains overwhelmingly behind Trump.
One looming question is whether Trump will at some point turn against Republicans who are positioning themselves to run in 2024 – and who have so far aligned themselves closely with the former president and his policies.
“I love my Republicans, but we’re really kicking their ass, too,” Trump said in his CPAC speech of party members who might run against him for president. “But we love them. But we like it because they’re friends of ours, right? So it’s OK. I think we can say that affectionately.”

Her mother was born Maria-Luisa Yvonne Radha de Wendt de Kerlor, better known as Gogo Schiaparelli, and was a socialite of Italian, Swiss and French, and Egyptian ancestry. Berenson's maternal grandmother was the fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, and her maternal grandfather was Wilhelm de Wendt de Kerlor, a theosophist and psychic medium.
