there is an upcoming film called “1521” which retells the series of events leading to the death of the portuguese ferdinand magellan—played by the on screen legend danny trejo, no less—on mactan shores in 1521. but while that may seem interesting to anyone interested in philippine and southeast asian histories, i have to give a few heads up about it:
enrique of malacca is seemingly not enrique of malacca. we will have to see for sure once the film is actually out but based on the trailer and synopsis already, it seems he has been racebent from the malay slave and interpreter who was captured by the portuguese at the fall of malacca into a “dashingly handsome spanish soldier” who falls in love with “a young native princess with goddess-like beauty.”
this “young native princess with a goddess-like beauty” is predictably and distractingly played by a metizo actress, bea alonzo. laughably, her character’s name is also diwata.
francis lara ho, one of the co-writers, has unscrupulously described their film as akin to pocahontas (x)
the costumes for the sugbuanon people, despite the crew allegedly doing research for the time period, unfortunately look more like refashioned sacks than actual early 16th century sugbuanon clothing

Jurassic Park: It's Ironic, by Meig of A-Dinosaur-A-Day
What follows is a retelling of the Jurassic Park story, mainly based on the 1993 film, with portions of the original novel used to supplement the story. The main point of divergence occurs when the park is unable to find workable nonavian dinosaur genetic material for cloning, since - as in the real world - dna degrades much too rapidly. Instead, the park consists only of extinct dinosaurs that can be brought back - birds from the last 2.5 million years. What happens after that is, as Ian Malcolm would say, an emerging pattern.

Chapter One: Magallanes Basin, Chile
It was frigid at the dig site, with sharp winds battering everything they could, knocking over rocks and tools and even people. Some folks were shouting over the wind, while others were hurrying to protect precious material. The chaos was almost too much to deal with, but Donald Gennaro had work to do, and needed to consult with the dig site leader, Juanito.
Dig site leader was, honestly, not descriptive enough. Juanito Rostagno was one of the most respected paleontologists of South America, and he oversaw all the dig sites run by International Genetics Technology Incorporated, otherwise known as InGen. And it was precisely because of his competence and knowledge that Gennaro had made the trip so far south.
Magallanes Basin was as far south in Patagonia as you could get, near Tierra del Fuego. The freezing winds and icy temperatures prevented it from being inhabited in most locations, with only a few population centers popping up here or there. The dig site was near the sea, among the rocky crags and crevices, far away from the more famous Patagonian steppe. Snow was common, which made the dig perilous – at any point, the material could be lost forever. As it was, a miracle must have prevented the material around them from being swept out to sea.
“Hola Juanito!” Donald greeted, finally finding the scientist among the others, reaching out to shake his hand as he tripped over a few rocks.
“Hola! Bienvenido!” Juanito shouted, gesturing for Donald to follow him across the rocky terrain. He was dressed in khakis and a thick flannel shirt, not bothering to wear a hat for fear of the wind blowing it away. Donald had lost his own hat about fifteen minutes ago. But among the researchers and workers dressed more similarly to Juanito, Donald felt quite out of place in his business suit.
“So Hammond is back at the island?” Donald asked, trying desperately not to trip over another rock. In the distance, a group of penguins walked by the workers, to their delight as they attempted to talk and interact with them. Donald had been brushing up on his knowledge of local wildlife, and was pretty sure they were Magellanic Penguins, a small variety similar to the African or Humboldt. They were really very cute. Sometimes he could really understand the appeal of Hammond’s vision.
“No, he had to go back to California early. He sends his apologies,” Juanito explained, grimacing slightly as the pair made it to one of the sturdy tents tucked away against the side of the mountain. It was significantly warmer here, both protected from the wind and supporting a small space heater.
Donald bristled but kept his voice even as he responded, “We are facing a twenty-million-dollar lawsuit by the family of that worker! And you’re telling me Hammond can’t even bother to see me?”
“He wants to be with his daughter, she’s getting a divorce,” Juanito said, picking up a bone fragment and examining it.
“I understand that, but we’ve been advised to deal with the situation now. The underwriters feel that the accident has raised some very serious safety questions about the park. This makes the investors very very anxious. I had to promise to conduct a very thorough, on-site inspection.”
Juanito looked up from the bone, frowning at Donald.
“Hammond hates inspections, they slow everything down.”
Donald fought the urge to laugh as he responded, “Well I need to or they’ll pull the funding. That’ll slow him down even more.”
“Juanito! Juanito!”
Both men looked up to the tent mouth to see a young graduate student waving them outside. Donald grit his teeth and followed them, bracing himself for the wind as they ambled down the hill towards a more secluded spot. The rocks were tucked against the mountain, with a pit a few feet deep so hidden Donald almost fell into it.
“Qué tenemos aquí?” Juanito asked the student, as they both began talking in rapid Spanish. Donald had learned Spanish, of course – hard to consult with a company that did most of its business in Latin America if he hadn’t – but he still could not follow the native speakers as their words flowed seamlessly like rivers between them. He could pick out the occasional world – something about a skull, dirt, and a new specimen.
“A ver muéstrame, muéstrame,” Juanito finally said slowly enough for Donald to pick it out, following them down into the pit carefully. Donald tripped into it, as he had almost predicted, steadying himself against the side of the rocks.
“Watch your footing!” Juanito warned as they came into the main center of the pit.
“If two experts,” Donald continued, determined to move past the fact that he couldn’t walk down here, apparently, “Sign off on the island, the insurance guys will back off. I’ve already got Ian Malcolm, but they think he’s too trendy – they want Alan Grant.”
Alan Grant and his research team had been early consultants on the project, though they never really knew what they were consulting about. Now they were just on Hammond’s digsite payroll – always looking for that one in a million chance that, maybe, his original dream could still happen.
“Grant?” Juanito snorted, “You’ll never get him out of Montana.” He picked up a skull fragment and looked at it excitedly, calling for the students around him to come over to examine it with him.
“Why not?” Donald asked, irritated.
“Because Grant’s like me,” Juanito explained, smirking, “He’s a digger.”
“Well what about Spinoza, down in New Zealand? She was hired for consultancy when the project changed direction.”
‘Changed Direction’ was the official wording for the major speedbump that had nearly thrown the entire enterprise out the window. Even mentioning it made a small frown appear on Juanito’s face. Donald didn’t like even mentioning it, given how much of the original investment had been lost chasing impossible dreams. They had kept as much of that original idea as they could, of course – even continuing to consult with Grant, Sattler, and others, when their work was no longer particularly relevant – but there was no getting around it. Hammond’s big dream had to be downsized. The laws of nature were against him.
“Spinoza?” Juanito continued, “Maybe. I do know she returned to the States recently for a conference, so she may actually be available. But she’ll insist on Grant and Sattler coming, too.”
“Why?” Donald asked, eyebrows raising towards his receding hairline. He had not even understood why they kept them on the payroll.
“Because she’s Grant’s former student, and none of them know that Grant and Sattler are no longer our chief experts,” Juanito snorted, “This is the price of all our secrecy, is it not?”
Donald sighed, “I suppose. So, what, in the middle of this lawsuit and the investors getting nervous, I’m supposed to fly down a whole spread of experts, regardless of their actual relevance, to check out this park?”
“Sattler is still relevant,” Juanito pointed out, “And beyond that, Grant is one of the strongest researchers in behavior we have. He will still be helpful. If you can get him to leave.”
“Any idea how I can do that?” Donald laughed.
Juanito helped his students start to prepare the specimens before them for transportation. He turned to look at Donald, frowning.
“Well...” Juanito paused, taking a deep breath and looking Donald straight in the eye, “Funding for us diggers. Nearly impossible. As always.”
Donald sighed.
It always came back to money.
“Since he couldn’t be bothered to join this meeting, I’ll have John sell it. His boisterous enthusiasm and cavalier attitude towards money will make it more enticing, anyway,” Donald said.
“Certainly is a better salesman than you,” Juanito laughed. Donald couldn’t help laughing with him.
“Unfortunately I cannot come with,” Juanito continued, frowning apologetically at Donald, “After all, look what we have here.” He gestured to the new material, which looked just like more bone scraps to Donald. But he wasn’t an expert.
“Think that’ll be a new species we can add?” Donald asked.
Juanito shrugged, walking back up out of the pit and helping Donald with him, “Well, we’ll find out, won’t we?”
Donald wasn’t confident enough that the project would move forward to answer.

ICYMI: The Chilean Star Wars Visions short, "In the Stars" was inspired by the genocide of the Selk'nam, an indigenous group in Patagonia.
You can read a little bit about that here:
But yesterday, after a long campaign, the Selk'nam finally gained official recognition from the Chilean government:
Here's a little bit in English about what it means for them to be officially recognized, and what it took to get there (written beforehand):
This official recognition also includes the Chilean government admitting its fault in the genocide publicly, which is a really big deal.
Also, a movie about the Selk'nam genocide, "The Settlers" (Los Colonos), which won an award at Cannes, was also just selected by the Chilean Film Academy as Chile's entry for the Oscars this year (and will be coming out for wider audiences soon!):
"In the Stars", sadly, was disqualified from the Emmys this year on a TECHNICALITY - there will be NO short form animated entries this year because of a mess behind the scenes.
All that being said, it's wonderful news for the Selk'nam this week, and it's really cool when Star Wars reflects a real world struggle against fascism.

After the fights with Doflamingo and Katakuri, now seeing Hawkins turn his sword into straw, the list of "are we sure they aren't awakened Devil fruit users?" grows because there has to be more than the handful we saw already.
For confirmed zoan awakenings we have the demon guards of impel down.
And for Paramecia users: Duffy, Katakuri, and Tesoro [film gold villian].
That's all the confirmed awakenings so far.
Zoan awakenings seem to give increases to strength and durability at the cost of intellect
So here's the popular theory that monster point chopper is his DF Awakening.
Paramecia awakenings are a lot harder to define. The most common example is if they can generate an manipulate a substance, they can transmute the surrounding environment into that substance [like doffy and katakuri]. But Tesoro's awakening allows him to use gold as a sensory network.
Then at the same time, almost every paramecia devil fruit has different properties so it be almost impossible to have a common thread on what defines it to be awakened apart from them outright stating it.
Logias are the one we know the least about. But it can be inferred that they are able to permanently alter the climate of a location such as what happened on punk hazard with Akainu and Aokiji. Raijin island in the new world [visited by urogue before the timeskip] is speculated to be the result of a previous holder of Enel's Goro Goro no mi Awakening.
I would rationalize it as something outside the normal, expected purview of a devil fruits ability
So here's a short list of DF users and the specific ability that I think makes them awakened.
-Blueno: Door Door fruit
Air Door- while the door door fruit can allow you to turn yourself into a door by being pressed into an object or turning other things into doors if you touch them, air door allows you to create a pocket dimension that allows for undetected movement and teleportation.
-Magellan: venom venom fruit
Venom Demon- Magellan's Df allows him to create and manipulate poisons which affects only organic things as it was shown to be ineffective against mr. 3's wax. Venom Demon is an entity capable of poisoning and corroding non-organic substances such as said wax and the environment of impel down while still being as lethal to organics.
Kuma: paw paw fruit
Repelling the intangible- Kuma defined his ability to repel anything that he touches. Objects, people, air. All are physical matter. But pain? Fatigue? How does one touch that??
Brook: Yomi Yomi no mi
Everything he can do post timeskip- oh boy where do I start with this one. For starters Brook said that his devil fruit basically made him immortal so where does he get all of those powers from? Yomi is the Japanese word for the Underworld. Brook is not just immortal. He is the literal underworld personified. Removing his soul from his body. Summoning freezing winds. Forcing souls out of bodies they do not belong to. How much he absolutely hard counters Big Mom's soul soul powers.
Apart from these people who else do you think should be awakened.
Oh jesus Brook's one is fucking me up. I never questioned Brook's powers but it makes so much sense??? Like, in principle all his fruit allowed him to do was to come back once dead, and now he has all this cool shit going on?? Amazing
I tend to take powers at face value, like 'oh this is something they can do, cool!' so that makes me shit at theorising about this.
I never gave a second thought to these abilities but it makes so much sense they are their awakened form

Eswatini is rich in bird life, including white-backed vultures, white-headed, lappet-faced and Cape vultures, raptors such as martial eagles, bateleurs, and long-crested eagles, and the southernmost nesting site of the marabou stork. Religion was a major dividing line between the parties before 1960, with Catholics, Jews, and southern Protestants heavily Democratic and northeastern Protestants heavily Republican. Magellan never made it back to Europe as he was killed by natives in the Philippines in 1521. Stylistically, rap occupies a gray area between speech, prose, poetry, and singing. Once again, unsure if I'll do all horror films for October, but also I'm 100% going to do all horror films in October, I am lying because I feel like I shouldn't watch, uhh, like 35 horror films in a row. But I'm going to.
Anyway, tonight is a sci-fi film with a premise that sounds a lot like every other futuristic space mission film, so we'll see if it lands closer to Contact (1997) or Event Horizon (1997) as the basis for the rip off. That sounds mean, I don't intend it that way. But if there's an indefinite mission to find the Mysterious Thing all the way out by Neptune...
Magellan (2017)
Tumblr media
Oh my god, what if there were aliens, you guys.
The inside of this...space ship is so crappy looking. Actually a lot about this film is sort of mediocre looking.

Happy Filipino American History Month!!! (Or at least.. the tail end of it)
Ok FINALLY new covers! Sorry guys.. I know it’s been a minute, but I didn’t want to just phone in a Ned’s Lola idea.. and to be honest wasn’t getting a whole lot of inspiration from Marvel this year other than the the 2 films these covers are emulating.
Slide 1 - Believe it or not, I only recently caught Across the Spider-Verse.. but once I did, I instantly knew I wanted to do the Royal Dansk bit there. My original idea was that Miles Morales found a container that actually had a single butter cookie and it was causing an anomaly that was destroying the multiverse because it shouldn’t exist. And all the infinite Lolas would be there trying to fix it, I guess? I felt like that idea was just overcomplicating things, so I streamlined it. BTW my favorite part is that Datu Lola (Lola-Lola) straight up stores a conquistador skull in her container. (It’s probably Magellan’s skull because that dumbass dies in all universes)
Slide 2 - For the GotG 3 cover, it took me a bit to figure out a reason why the villain @nicosantos plays (Theel) would be interacting with Ned and Lola in any shape or form. The “evil nursing degree” Angle was perfect (Disclaimer- Nurses, I know there is no such thing as an evil nursing degree.. you are all -literally- life savers out here) As a kid I used to love those old school team comics (like Justice League) with the member roll call on the cover via a side strip with their floating heads - wanted to do the same thing, and managed to throw in some bits in there.

14 and 40!
14 What was an important, defining moment you’ve had with fish/aquatic animals?
probably when i worked at my local zoo on the bird and reptile unit! i was often assigned to the penguins (since my degree is marine bio) so got to see how they act up close. i later did my dissertation on those penguins and their behaviours. another moment would probably be when i fed sharks.
40 Share a pet peeve about something marine-related (e.g. a misconception, a portrayal or lack of portrayal of an animal, etc.) that drives you up the walls.
ohhhhhh man i have a whole list of pet peeves and irritants:
when films that include penguins in it can't even be bothered to research said penguin and continually call them by the wrong species name. there was a film i watched some time ago that was set in a zoo, and the protag was meant to be an ~expert~ on the penguins. except that the penguins in question were magellanic penguins and the protag kept calling them adelie penguins. the two look nothing alike and i spent an hour just fuming.
the vilifying of gulls in every day life. people call them flying rats and all sorts of names and there's so much hostile architecture put in place to stop them landing when really gulls are absolute sweethearts. if you have a lot of gulls (as you usually do when you live by the sea), you tend to have less of a rat population, which you'd think would be good, right? well, it's not good enough for most people apparently. they don't even see gulls as living beings half the time, just letting their kids kick at them. and they might be on the protected species list in the uk now, but it doesn't stop said hostile architecture from appearing. i want to burn any building that has it to the ground.
the use of the term 'seagull'. no such thing as a seagull. in marine bio they're just called gulls, with their other name before 'gull' (ie lesser black backed gull, herring gull etc).
SHARK PORTRAYAL SHARK PORTRAYAL. jaws has ruined the reputation of sharks and has severely harmed shark conservation efforts. great whites do not act like the jaws film says they do. if they bite a human, it's because they mistake them for seals or are just curious. no shark species acts the same as the other (greenland sharks don't act like whitetip reef sharks don't act like goblin sharks). the only shark that actually deserves a reputation of ferocity is the sandtiger shark, and they cannibalise their own siblings in utero. (also sharks are mostly ovoviviparous and give live births and i am tired of media not acknowledging this).
edit: i forgot my most rage inducing one: PENGUINS DON'T JUST LIVE IN ANTARCTICA. there are around seventeen officially acknowledged species of penguins and only two of them live in antarctica proper. the rest generally live in tropical areas.
sorry lmao i got carried away with the last question but i have a lot of rage in me about this subject. i subject everyone i meet to at least one of these rants.
ty for the ask!!! <3
