Elon Musk says he plans to send 1 million people to Mars

Elon Musk recently shared details on Twitter about his plans to send 1 million people to Mars by 2050. The SpaceX founder said there would be "a lot of jobs" in the city he hopes to build on Mars. Musk said he plans to build a fleet of 1,000 Starships — the 387-foot rocketship that SpaceX is developing for deep-space travel — and launch three of them each day. In a series of tweets on Thursday, Elon Musk revealed new details about his plan to build a city of 1 million people on Mars by 2050. Musk said he hopes to build 1,000 Starships — the towering and ostensibly fully reusable spaceship that SpaceX is developing in South Texas — over 10 years. That's 100 new Starships per year. Eventually, Musk added, the goal is to launch an average of three Starships per day and make the trip to Mars available to anybody. "Needs to be such that anyone can go if they want, with loans available for those who don't have money," Musk wrote. - Not enough to convince you to leave Earth behind? - "There will be a lot of jobs on Mars!" he added. Starship, if realized as designed, would be the most powerful launch system ever created; each launch would pack enough thrust to send more than 100 tons (about seven fully loaded school buses' worth of mass) and 100 people into orbit at a time. Musk didn't specify what, exactly, the rockets would need to carry to Mars, but lots of food, water, building materials, tools, and advanced life support systems are a given. Thus he estimated he'll need a whole fleet of Starships to build a permanent settlement. "Megatons per year to orbit are needed for life to become multiplanetary," he tweeted on Thursday. In total, 1,000 Starships could hypothetically transport about 100 megatons of stuff to Mars; that's the volume Musk has said he hopes to send to the red planet per year. With ship ferrying about 100 passengers, that would make for a total migration of about 100,000 people. Musk also suggested he plans to capitalize on the brief windows of time in which the orbits of Earth and Mars align — this comes about every 25 months. That allows spacecraft to spring off of Earth's rotation and set themselves on a low-fuel journey towards Mars. Musk said he would take advantage of that opportunity by "loading the Mars fleet into Earth orbit," then sending all 1,000 ships on a Mars-bound trajectory over that 30-day window every 26 months.

That seems to contradict an earlier tweet in which Musk said 1,000 Starships would fly to Mars each year, rather than every 26 months. Either way, SpaceX has a long way to go before reaching those goals. A Starship prototype could launch within months Musk has said a new version of a Starship prototype may launch before the end of March. "First flight is hopefully 2 to 3 months away," Musk tweeted on December 27. The development of the prototype hit delays after an accidental explosion during a fuel-tank pressurization test on November 20, which blew the top off SpaceX's first 16-story Starship prototype.

The company could build as many as 20 different prototypes before engineers settle on a "1.0" design to fly cargo and people. The full Starship launch system would also include a 22-story rocket booster called Super Heavy; combined, the whole thing would stand about 387 feet (118 meters) tall. During launch, a Starship spaceship would ride atop the booster then disconnect after the booster runs low on fuel, and rocket its way into orbit.

Both parts are being designed to be fully reusable. If that vision comes to pass, Musk estimates the cost of a single launch would be just $2 million — that would be hundreds of times cheaper than the current cost of launching a similar amount of people and cargo into space on any planned or existing rocket (including SpaceX's own Falcon 9 system). Musk said in September that he hopes to launch a Starship into orbit by mid-2020 and maybe even fly a person in it before the end of the year. Gwynne Shotwell, the president and chief operating officer of SpaceX, said during a NASA teleconference that the company is "aiming to be able to drop Starship on the lunar surface in 2022" and fly Japanese tech entrepreneur and billionaire Yusaku Maezawa around the moon in 2023. However, all of those statements came before the Starship prototype explosion. SpaceX will also have to clear several regulatory and practical hurdles — including securing the safety of residents of Boca Chica Village, which sits within 2 miles of SpaceX's Texas launch pad — before it can launch any prototypes to orbit. "Helping to pay for this is why I'm accumulating assets on Earth," Musk tweeted on Thursday. On the subject of colonizing Mars

Can you believe that we are on the realm of possibility of colonizing Mars within this decade, this century, in our lifetime.

However it is not through Nasa, it is through a private cooperation that has the future of humanity as a interplanetary species in its paws, mind, and soul. It is going faster than expected when becoming a interplanetary species would theoretically be possible in the year 2060 after all our problems were hashed our and had a nuclear war to bring us together. This company is going faster than NASA. And NASA is watching. Everyones eyes are on it.

Why does the American news not report about it the day of the starhopper after the final piece of the puzzle has come together? Only Twitter and the rest of the internet know of it immediately while the news channels don’t report about it even though it is the most historic event to happen. The Starship launching is next on the list. Surely that will get the attention of the news when it does the sub orbital launch, bad or good news it will bode, it will be the most awesome day. We get to see a Starship fly and land.

If something happens to the first Starship then SpaceX get it fixed in the second Starship. Not one but two majestic Starship scenes happening in our lifetime. The last fifty years since reaching the moon had been stagnate. Humans have been based on Earth instead of pushing forward to the future to spreading on to other planets. Then comes the 18m Starship some time after the retirement of the 9m Starship. Here is a mock up of the 18m by a fellow SpaceX fan on SpaceXLounge. This looks like a colony ship on the right.

The one on the left could be used for flight on Earth or to the moon..

The new design of Starship will be released next month on September 28th, as according to Elon, it will perform a sub orbital launch in October.

The amazing thought of this entire situation is that we can see a successful flight of the mk1 Starship breaching into the sky in a livestream happening before our very eyes. It would be a real life Starship, the stuff of science fiction, coming into existence. The beauty, the love, the labor, Humanity’s best side, its hope, it’s optimism, its dreams soaring to be among the stars and explore them, live among them, be free of the planet. It’s a beautiful image to think of, to look forward to, and pray about of actually happening.

Just today, September 29th 2019, Trump has reestablished US Space Command (Assembled in 1985 and disbanded in 2002) and United States Space Force which suggests that Mars may have its own States established during colonization if it is to be considered a arm of Earth instead of its own independent planet.

As soon as homes and hydroponic garden are set up, there will be a need for interplanetary communication. Which will require a satellite or a series of them. SpaceX will have to create one should NASA and Congress decide not to work together before hand to send one which as canceled roughly decade ago for reasons. Given Elon’s determination to establish a colonized Mars, it will be a given that Elon would get a deal in place to have a satellite to be sent up there along with the tons of supplies and release the packaging one way or another.

However, on the other hand, how will the waste be handled? Will the waste be disposable? Will it be biodegrable for being set on Mars after use? How will it be handled? Given this is Elon’s personal pet project he may have figured out a way to handle this approach instead of performing what we do on Earth: landfills. There are: reuseables, recyclable, and energy making kind of fate for the waste left behind after its initial use.

Try to imagine a average typical family watching TV but on Mars after a day doing their jobs or whatever tasks they were given by members of the household. Try to imagine a average typical family watching science fiction films about Mars on Mars. Try to imagine families watching colonization scifi films on Mars living out the reality of being colonists themselves. Try to imagine the surreal nature of it all.

The very thought of people living on Mars in the 2020′s living out the future but instead of coal power/fossil fuels being used to power their homes, being solar power, is a very comforting and futuristic one. However way they are doing the houses, above ground or below ground, underneath drone made ground shelters, it is a sure thing to assume that this undertaking will be the rise of a new civilization. Of humanity’s rebirth into space and how it will endure on other difficult planets like Mars.

Imagine filmmakers on Mars making films about being on Mars. Mars historical films, Mars Documentary's, Mars sit-coms, Mars supernatural shows, and Mars mystery/drama/crime procedures, Mars horror films, Mars Soap Operas, and so on. Imagine in the 21st century that we get to see a real life progression of Mars growth on film in color and in widescreen. Imagine how groundbreaking it would be.

Imagine getting to see the evolution of human beings thriving and evolving to living on Mars through television in the upcoming decades.

A sunny Sunday afternoon, a packed Brookie up against the old enemy, the despised Eels and a victory. The only missing ingredient of a perfect afternoon being the absence of the dulcet tones of Rex “the Moose” Mossop calling the action.

There were however some ominous signs for Manly though when it was reported that Brad Parker had been recalled into the team as a late replacement for an injured Cade Cust.

Notwithstanding the inclusion of Parker, Manly opened the scoring after 5 minutes when improving winger Rueben Garrick crossed in the corner. Garrick then duly converted his own try. Young Garrick is but another example of a player improving in season 2019 as compared to last year, with the Sea Eagle still somewhat dumfounded as to the reason for this repeated and strange phenomenon. . The Sea Eagle vows to get to the bottom of this and seek a rational explanation.

The Eels then hit back with two tries of their own, the first as a result of a Horhay Torfua howler. Young Horhay has the turning circle and mobility of a Mk1 Abrams tank and the sooner he is moved into the forwards the better for all concerned.

Defence then took a back seat for the remainder of the half, particularly from the Eels and Manly ran in four tries including a screamer from Tommy Turbo. Even the much-maligned Brad Parker managed to cross for a try as Manly held a 26-12 lead at the break.

The second half was less than inspiring with plenty of mistakes from both teams. Manly took their foot off the accelerator but made less mistakes than the Eels running in a further two tries with Rueben Garrick chalking up his first career hat-trick.

Two late tries to the Eels added some respectability however the final 36-24 scoreline did not justify the commanding nature of the Manly victory.

What a hapless mob the Eels are, and it was interesting to note the prevalence of Manly discards (David Gower, Shaun Lane, Clint Gutherson, Coach Brad Arthur etc.) within their ranks, indeed further proof positive that no-one goes better when they leave the nest.

The win not only consolidates Manly within the top 8, but provides some hope for even better things to come as they now knock on the door of the top 4. Next week against the filthy wrestling, cheating rorters from Melbourne will provide a more accurate gauge on where Manly sit in season 2019.

More Embarrassment for the NRL- Mark Coyne

Since the off-season from hell the NRL has done a fair job in improving player behaviour however, the latest in a long stream of embarrassments comes directly from head office. Proving that you can take the man out of the NRL, but you can never take the NRL out of the man, former Dragon and now NRL Commissioner, Mark Coyne has found himself in hot water and on the wrong side of the Singaporean legal system.

It has been reported in the press that Mr Coyne has unleashed an expletive laden tirade along the lines of "you are a f---ing stupid idiot", a "f---ing dickhead" and a "cock", "f---ing cock" and "f---ing dog", he also threatened to "sue you through your f---ing arse" and adding "if some f---ing stupid c--- sues me, I don’t f---ing care. Especially you". And then finally "you are f---ing crazy", "you must be f---ing embarrassed" and "you must be so f---ing proud of yourself"

Such a tirade could have been excused and even justified had it taken place at an NRL Board meeting (and merely represented a rehash of the minutes of said meeting), or perhaps having been directed at incumbent NRL Chairman, Peter Beattie (given his many public statements in the past have only but confirmed his mastery of embarrassment).

However poor old Mr Coyne made the fatal mistake of directing it towards a police officer in Singapore. Whilst the Australian judicial system seems to tolerate verbal and physical abuse directed towards the constabulary, such is not the case in Singapore and Mr Coyne was duly arrested, his passport confiscated and then detained in Singapore for seven weeks.

The Sea Eagle can report that Mr Coyne got off lightly and was very fortunate not to have been sentenced to the traditional Singaporean punishment for such an indiscretion.

Compounding this indiscretion, Mr Coyne then thought it would be acceptable to withhold informing the NRL of his misdemeanour, allegedly suggesting something about an ear infection which prevented him from returning from Singapore. Mr Coyne also pulled out that old and well used NRL chestnut, claiming that he was too intoxicated to remember the incident and that his behaviour was completely out of character (aren’t they all!!).

It has since been reported in various outlets that Mr Coyne is a “good bloke and irreplaceable on the NRL Commission”. Be that as it may, and the Sea Eagle does not doubt it for one moment, with the power of an NRL independent Commissioner comes great responsibility. The first is not to embarrass oneself or the code (Mr Peter Beattie not knowing who the Sharks were is but one example of this), and the second it would seem, is not to go on drunken tirades in foreign lands and abuse the local police. Such things never end well.

The Sea Eagle notes that it has also been reported that Israel Folau is a “good bloke” but the NRL won’t allow him within a bull’s roar of participating in the greatest game of all.

As far as the Sea Eagle is concerned and bearing in mind that Clubs are required to immediately self-report any incident involving players/officials, in the interest of consistency (particularly given the Dylan Walker banning despite being found ultimately NOT GUILTY), the NRL, must enact its no-fault policy and Mr Coyne should be sacked from the Commission.

In the words of the great man President Trump, Mark Coyne “You’re Fired”.

The Sea Eagle’s only other comment on this unmitigated debacle, is to urge those that actually control the independent commission of the NRL, to resist the temptation (largely from the News Limited and Fairfax media) to appoint someone on the commission who has a so called rugby league background.

Everybody knows that sooner or later anyone with a significant rugby league background is more likely than not going to have some sort of unsavoury incident surface. This is due basically to the rugby league DNA factor . Regrettably only those who are regular participants in rugby league seem to fully understand and appreciate how to control and limit the impacts of this DNA chromosome mismatch, but as everybody knows, despite the best efforts all concerned, sooner or later the rugby league gene will kick in, and create embarrassment for all and sundry.

It can't be stopped, it can only be managed. This is not a criticism , as no other code on the planet seems to have this ability to recover from such significant embarrassment on a regular basis. But to put it as simply as one can, it is the reason why rugby league is the greatest game of all and not the game they play in heaven (rugby union ).

The Sun Herald reported that on Saturday 19 July 2019, Trent Barrett’s coaching tenure at Manly officially came to an end. The same publication also reported said Mr. Barrett has somehow managed to land a gig as part of the All Blacks support crew. The Sea Eagle is not in a position to verify the accuracy of this allegation but if it is true you can expect that the All Blacks will not win the 2019 World Cup.

Moreover, if indeed it is true, the mind boggles at who actually thought this was a good thing to do in New Zealand rugby. For a nation who on any objective basis is by far and away the best managed and performing rugby union outfit on the planet, it beggars belief that they thought they even need to go anywhere near the former Shark/Dragon playing, DFI infected, ex-Manly coach. A quick review of his coaching record and the fact that he's never won a premiership as a player or as a coach only confirms the folly of such a decision (if indeed it has been made).

Erskineville Toxic Waste Real Estate Developments

We have all read about the recent debacle that is new home unit construction in Sydney and Melbourne but in particular in the area starting from South of the Harbour Bridge heading towards Botany and Mascot.

The latest in this sad and sorry saga is a revelation that a block of units in Erskineville will not be approved by the Council as fit for human habitation, because it has not complied with environmental rules. That is to say it was built on a toxic waste dump much in the same way that the Sydney Olympic Stadium was built on a toxic waste dump in Homebush.

Seemingly it is not acceptable for a few 100 people to live in a block of units on a toxic waste dump in Erskineville but it is perfectly reasonable to put 80,000 people on a regular basis into a stadium in Homebush with possibly even more alarming environmental issues underneath it.

The poor old punters who have bought these units off the plan can rightly feel that they have been Piss&d on from a great height. Given the developer is an entity known as Golden Rain Development Pty Limited (apparently a Chinese backed real estate development firm), the Sea Eagle can confirm that the Director of Controversy is currently looking into whether or not a new name would be more appropriate.

Something in the order of Golden Shower Development Pty Limited. But at this stage that is mere conjecture.

The Vatican released the message on March 9, 2019; the world day will be observed on the 4th Sunday of Easter, Good Shepherd Sunday, May 12, 2019.

“The Lord’s call is not an intrusion of God in our freedom; it is not a ‘cage’ or a burden to be borne,” the Holy Father said. “On the contrary, it is the loving initiative whereby God encounters us and invites us to be part of a great undertaking. He opens before our eyes the horizon of a greater sea and an abundant catch.”

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

After the lively and fruitful experience of the Synod devoted to young people last October, we recently celebrated the Thirty-fourth World Youth Day in Panama City. These two great events allowed the Church to be attentive both to the voice of the Spirit and to the life of young men and women, their questions and concerns, their problems and their hopes.

Building on what I shared with the young people in Panama, I would like to reflect, on this World Day of Prayer for Vocations, on how the Lord’s call makes us bearers of a promise and, at the same time, asks of us the courage to take a risk, with him and for him. I will do this by reflecting briefly with you on these two aspects – promise and risk – as they appear in the Gospel account of the calling of the first disciples by the sea of Galilee (Mk 1:16-20).

Two pairs of brothers – Simon and Andrew, and James and John – are going about their daily tasks as fishermen. In this demanding work, they had learned the laws of nature, yet at times, when the winds were adverse and waves shook their boats, they had to defy the elements. On some days, the catch of fish amply repaid their efforts, but on others, an entire night’s work was not sufficient to fill their nets, and they had to return to shore weary and disappointed.

Much of life is like that. Each of us tries to realize his or her deepest desires; we engage in activities that we hope will prove enriching, and we put out on a “sea” of possibilities in the hope of steering the right course, one that will satisfy our thirst for happiness. Sometimes we enjoy a good catch, while at others, we need courage to keep our boat from being tossed by the waves, or we are frustrated at seeing our nets come up empty.

As with every call, the Gospel speaks of an encounter. Jesus walks by, sees those fishermen, and walks up to them… The same thing happened when we met the person we wanted to marry, or when we first felt the attraction of a life of consecration: we were surprised by an encounter, and at that moment we glimpsed the promise of a joy capable of bringing fulfillment to our lives. That day, by the sea of Galilee, Jesus drew near to those fishermen, breaking through the “paralysis of routine” (Homily for the XXII World Day for Consecrated Life, 2 February 2018). And he immediately made them a promise: “I will make you fishers of men” (Mk1:17).

The Lord’s call is not an intrusion of God in our freedom; it is not a “cage” or a burden to be borne. God, in fact, desires that our lives not become banal and predictable, imprisoned by daily routine, or unresponsive before decisions that could give it meaning. The Lord does not want us to live from day to day, thinking that nothing is worth fighting for, slowly losing our desire to set out on new and exciting paths. If at times he makes us experience a “miraculous catch”, it is because he wants us to discover that each of us is called – in a variety of ways – to something grand and that our lives should not grow entangled in the nets of ennui that dulls the heart. Every vocation is a summons not to stand on the shore, nets in hand, but to follow Jesus on the path he has marked out for us, for our own happiness and for the good of those around us.

Embracing this promise naturally demands the courage to risk making a decision. The first disciples, called by Jesus to be part of something greater, “immediately left their nets and followed him” (Mk 1:18). Responding to the Lord’s call involves putting ourselves on the line and facing a great challenge. It means being ready to leave behind whatever would keep us tied to our little boat and prevent us from making a definitive choice. We are called to be bold and decisive in seeking God’s plan for our lives. Gazing out at the vast “ocean” of vocation, we cannot remain content to repair our nets on the boat that gives us security but must trust instead in the Lord’s promise.

I think primarily of the call to the Christian life which all of us received at Baptism. It teaches us that our life is not a fluke but rather a gift: that of being God’s beloved children, gathered in the great family of the Church. It is precisely in the ecclesial community that the Christian life is born and develops, especially through the liturgy. The liturgy introduces us to God’s word and the grace of the sacraments; from an early age, we are taught the art of prayer and fraternal sharing. In the end, the Church is our mother because she brings us to new life and leads us to Christ. So we must love her, even when we see her face marred by human frailty and sin, and we must help to make her ever more beautiful and radiant so that she can bear witness to God’s love in the world.

The Christian life thus finds expression in those decisions that, while giving a precise direction to our personal journey, also contribute to the growth of God’s kingdom in our world. I think of the decision to marry in Christ and to form a family, as well as all those other vocations associated with work and professional life, with the commitment to charity and solidarity, with social and political responsibilities, and so forth. These vocations make us bearers of a promise of goodness, love, and justice, not only for ourselves but also for our societies and cultures, which need courageous Christians and authentic witnesses of the kingdom of God.

In encountering the Lord, some may feel the attraction of a call to the consecrated life or to the ordained priesthood. It is a discovery that can excite and at the same time frighten us since we feel called to become “fishers of men” in the barque of the Church by giving totally of ourselves in commitment to faithful service of the Gospel and our brothers and sisters. Such a decision carries the risk of leaving everything behind to follow the Lord, to devote ourselves completely to him, and to share in his work. Many kinds of interior resistance can stand in the way of making this decision, especially in highly secularized contexts where there no longer seems to be a place for God and for the Gospel. Places where it is easy to grow discouraged and fall into the “weariness of hope” (Homily at Mass with Priests, Consecrated Persons and Lay Movements, Panama, 26 January 2019).

And yet, there can be no greater joy than to risk one’s life for the Lord! I would like to say this especially to you, the young. Do not be deaf to the Lord’s call. If he calls you to follow this path, do not pull your oars into the boat, but trust him. Do not yield to fear, which paralyzes us before the great heights to which the Lord points us. Always remember that to those who leave their nets and boat behind, and follow him, the Lord promises the joy of a new life that can fill our hearts and enliven our journey.

Dear friends, it is not always easy to discern our vocation and to steer our life in the right direction. For this reason, there needs to be a renewed commitment on the part of the whole Church – priests, religious, pastoral workers and educators – to provide young people in particular with opportunities for listening and discernment. There is a need for a youth ministry and a vocational promotion that can open the way to discovering God’s plan, above all through prayer, meditation on God’s word, eucharistic adoration and spiritual accompaniment.

As was made clear several times during the World Youth Day in Panama, we should always look to Mary. Also in the story of this young woman, vocation was both a promise and a risk. Her mission was not easy, yet she did not allow fear to prevail. “It was the ‘yes’ of someone prepared to be committed, someone willing to take a risk, ready to stake everything she had, with no more security than the certainty of knowing that she was the bearer of a promise. I ask each one of you: Do you see yourselves as bearers of a promise? What promise do I bear within my heart to take forward? Mary’s would undoubtedly be a difficult mission, but the challenges that lay ahead were no reason to say ‘no’. Things would get complicated, of course, but not in the same way as happens when cowardice paralyzes us because things are not clear or sure in advance” (Vigil with Young People, Panama, 26 January 2019).

On this World Day of Prayer for Vocations, let us join in prayer and ask the Lord to help us discover his plan of love for our lives, and to grant us the courage to walk in the path that, from the beginning, he has chosen for each of us.

Mercedes-Benz Museum has finally reopened its doors, even if only in the weekends. The German car manufacturer has made it known that from today the brand's cultural site in Stuttgart has returned to welcome the many visitors who are interested in discovering the history of Mercedes and who in recent weeks have not been able to do so due to the restrictions related to dissemination of the Coronavirus. Closing the Mercedes-Benz Museum was precisely one of these restrictive rules. As mentioned, the reopening was scheduled for today, even if initially the restart will be gradual: the museum will remain open for visits only from Friday to Sunday, while on the other four days of the week there will be no access. Furthermore, within the site, visitors must comply with the prescribed hygiene and health standards necessary to safeguard everyone's health: there will in fact be restrictions on the maximum number of people who can enter per shift, and in addition all must respect social distancing. There is also an obligation to wear a protective mask for everyone, including children aged six and up. Of course it won't be all the same as before, but at least Mercedes fans will be able to relish the history of the brand through a guided tour of over 160 vehicles and over 1.500 gadgets on display. Besides, if you can't reach Stuttgart to visit the Museum, here it is a gift for you: the beautiful photoshoots of German cargirl and stylish socialite Denise aka Miss Grey next to her 2019 Mercedes-Benz W177 A200. After all, even if it's too early to see this model in a Museum, nonetheless it's already become a classic. And by the way, a Mercedes never gets old! *** *** *** The Mercedes A-class has evolved into something quite different from the technical showboating of the original Mk1 monobox back in 1997. Fast forward twenty and a bit years, and the new Mercedes A-class hatchback ups the ante with a more conventional look, some impressive interior tech and a more enjoyable ride. The W177 Mercedes-Benz A-Class is the fourth and current generation of the A-Class range of subcompact executive hatchbacks and sedans. It was launched in 2018 as the successor to the W176 A-Class, with sales commencing in March 2018. In 2020 the A-Class sedan is launching with two variants, the A200 and the entry-level A 180 at $44,900. Standard equipment for the A200 runs to 18-inch alloy wheels, ‘Artico’ faux leather upholstery, the ‘MBUX’ widescreen cockpit display (two 10.25-inch digital screens), auto LED headlights and DRLs, keyless entry and start, auto-dimming rearview mirror, climate-control, sat nav, multi-function sports steering wheel, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, ‘Active Parking Assist’ (with ultrasonic proximity sensors front and rear), tinted glass, plus nine-speaker, 225W audio with digital radio, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Plus a dual exhaust system, four-way electrical adjustment for the driver’s seat (with lumbar support), a folding rear armrest (with twin cupholders), adaptive high-beam assist, and a wireless device charging bay. Power is supplied by a 1.3-litre direct-injection four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine delivering 120kW (at 5500rpm) and 250Nm (at 1620rpm). Drive goes to the front wheels only via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Claimed fuel economy for the combined (ADR 81/02 - urban, extra-urban) cycle is 5.7L/100km, with a CO2 emissions figure of 130g/km. Active safety features include ABS, BA, EBD, stability and traction controls, a reversing camera (with dynamic guidelines), ‘Active Brake Assist’ (Merc-speak for AEB), ‘Adaptive Brake’, ‘Attention Assist’, ‘Blind Spot Assist’, ‘Cross-wind Assist’, ‘Lane Keep Assist’, ‘Adaptive Highbeam Assist’, a tyre pressure warning system, the ‘Pre-Safe’ accident anticipatory system, and ‘Traffic Sign Assist’. If all that fails to prevent an impact you’ll be protected by nine airbags (front, pelvis and window for driver and front passenger, side airbags for rear seat occupants and a driver’s knee bag), and the ‘Active Bonnet’ automatically tilts to minimise pedestrian injuries. Mercedes-Benz covers its passenger car range with a three year/unlimited km warranty with ‘Mercedes-Benz Road Care’ assistance included for three years. Unsurprisingly, the A180d (along with AMG Line trim) is set to be the biggest-seller once again – although not by much – as the anti-diesel brigade guilt trips consumers into the A200 instead. And speaking of the 161bhp A200, it’s noticeably perkier than the A180d under hard acceleration, hitting the magic 62mph mark in 8.0 seconds dead and a top whack of 139mph. In the A200 version such figures are down to a 1.3-litre – yes, you read that right, a 1.3-litre Mercedes-Benz – turbocharged petrol producing 161bhp and 184 lb ft of torque. It’s not quite as silky smooth as you might expect, mind, with a coarseness to its character whenever you stray above 4000rpm.
