bellahadid: To see young designers from all over the Middle East and North Africa come together to showcase their talents is an emotional and beautiful vision. It shows that even through struggle; passion:love and beauty will always shine through. There is so much talent from the people of MENA, the only problem is, not enough opportunity. The work that Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani and Tania Fares do to raise awareness about the art communities in the Middle East and North Africa is something that has never been nurtured, but extremely deserving of. With an initial mission to provide financial support, guidance and mentorship to emerging designers in the MENA region, FTA has become so much more: a platform of opportunity through which every talented Arab or African designer can grow and receive international recognition.
Sending my love and congratulations to all of the incredible designers who stand strong for their respected countries. Representation is so important and if we are not able to showcase the talent of MENA (Middle East &North Africa) to the rest of the world, how will it ever be known? They deserve the same respect, recognition & support as the rest of the world. 🌎 🌍

Maison ARTC, Morocco
Maison Artc is the five-year-old creation of Israeli-Moroccan designer Artsi Ifrach, who works as sustainably as he can from his Marrakesh workshop, combining his huge collection of vintage garments with local materials like handmade blankets from the Atlas Mountains. The phrase "as he can" is critical here: "Sustainability and industry, production, fast fashion - none of these are sustainable, unless you do haute couture," explains Ifrach. His approach is to create collectible one-of-a-kind artefacts that preserve the past alive in the present. - Mr. Mark Holgate

Marine Serre, France
"The regenerating process is complex, unique, and meticulous," explains Marine Serre, whose company is based on reusing historic materials to create new outfits. Serre made the outfit seen here out of scarves purchased in French markets, creating a classic shape out of unusual materials. Using the old to produce new is difficult, especially on her scale. "We had to rework the whole chain of production," she said. "Eco-futurism is about a way of living, acting, and being inspired." "We'd like things to make sense." Yotka, Steff

Chopova Lowena, Britain
Working between Bulgaria and the United Kingdom benefits Emma Chopova and Laura Lowena. During lockdowns, the couple discovered old tablecloths and tartan taffetas in both nations, which they used as the foundation for their eccentric dresses and skirts. "This look is made from deadstock taffeta, which is then printed and flocked by us," she explains. Working with the environment is a "huge drive" for the designers. "We collect certain textiles," she explains, "and then make limited-edition pieces when they fit into the themes of the season - or when we figure out how to best show them off." - SY

Yuima Nakazato, Japan
Responsible sourcing of textiles is as important as silhouette for couturier Yuima Nakazato's Tokyo workshop. Nakazato celebrated the 10th anniversary of his label in autumn 2021 with a collection that included pieces made from upcycled leathers, organic cottons, laces, and linens hand-dyed with natural Japanese indigo (a process known as aizome), as well as others that combined nishijin-ori - a traditional kimono textile - with a plant-based synthetic inspired by spider silk. "To make this world a better place through garments," says Nakazato. - MM

Bode, America
When Emily Adams Bode debuted her recycled quilted jackets on the menswear market in 2017, the boyish style and homage to workmanship quickly resonated, but her love for the items and tales of the past also carried through with quilts, garments, linens, tablecloths, and blankets. She's since opened a tailoring store on Hester Street in New York, where customers can send clothes to be fixed, or "preserved," as Bode puts it. "We're teaching our community how clothing can last for generations." - EF

Lagos Space Programme, Nigeria
Adeju Thompson's work for the Lagos Space Programme bridges the gap between the past and the present, and it is mission-driven: fashion is the vehicle via which the designer, who studied in Wales and England, examines their non-binary identity as well as their Yoruba background. "We are aware of our responsibility as inhabitants of the planet," says Thompson, who frequently works with precolonial shapes and collaborates with experienced craftsmen who use indigenous craft processes like natural indigo dyeing. "My ancestors left so much behind," they explain. "I believe they expected us to continue telling these stories and building up on what they left." - LB-P

Duran Lantink, Netherlands
Some designers use moodboards to get ideas. Duran Lantink, an Amsterdam-based designer, instead produces some of his ideas after scouring the city on Tuesday nights, when individuals leave items out on the street for others to steal. "I never understood using new materials when there are so many beautiful things around me," says Lantink, who began creating as a youngster, ripping up Gaultier and Margiela that his mother no longer wore. For his label, he has lately used a vintage Balmain dress, a '60s fur coat, and a regiment's worth of army jumpers. "You get a pile of clothes and start digging in," Lantink jokes. - MH

By Walid, Britain
Walid al Damirji organised his company. Walid built his business on a simple tenet: no waste. "It would be disrespectful otherwise," the designer says of the historic textiles he converts into romantic blouses, jackets, and even homewares like cushions and blankets, such as curtains, old garments, and tapestries. "I leave no stone unturned - auctions, vintage fairs, car boot sales - you name it!" says al Damirji when it comes to locating these materials. Because of his genuine concern, he was among the first in the luxury fashion business to take upcycling and sustainability seriously. - SY

Cloth Is All “Cloth is to the African what monuments are to Westerners.” - El Anatsui, Ghanaian sculptor. The ‘V&A’s' blockbuster exhibition, 'Africa Fashion' opened July 2, 2022. This landmark event celebrates the irresistible creativity, ingenuity and unstoppable global impact of contemporary African fashions - and will be the UK’s most extensive exhibition on the topic to date. Over 250 objects, drawn from the personal archives of a selection of iconic mid-twentieth century and influential contemporary African fashion creatives, hang alongside textiles and photographs from the ‘V&A’s’ collection. 45 designers from over 20 countries across the continent are featured. There is a selection of garments on show from Shade Thomas-Fahm, Chris Seydou, Kofi Ansah and Alphadi, marking the first time their work will be shown in a London museum. The exhibition also celebrates influential contemporary African fashion creatives including Imane Ayissi, IAMISIGO, Moshions, Thebe Magugu and Sindiso Khumalo, showcasing objects and stories behind them alongside personal insights from the designers, together with sketches, editorial spreads, photographs, film and catwalk footage. 'Africa Fashion' will explore how fashion is an integral part of African culture historically, also looking at the work of contemporary designers, stylists and photographers working in the continent today and the impact that this new wave of creatives are having globally. ‘Africa Fashion’, ‘V&A’ until April 26, 2023. ‘The Trench’ by ‘Maison ARTC’, the label set up by Marrakech-based designer Artsi Ifrah. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #love #creativity #groundbreaking #diaspora #contemporarydesigners #rachidibissiriou #sanlésory #seydoukeïta #alphadi #shadethomasfahm #richmnisi #orangeculture #sindisokhumalo #drchristinechecinska #christinechecinska #vam #africafashion (at Victoria and Albert Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfqhnHOI-b8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
