One of my current on repeat songs is Maps, from Fun Home, a musical I only got into quite recently. Fun Home would be notable even if it weren't amazing - it's the only mainstream musical bar the Prom I can think of that focused on a lesbian, and Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori were the first all female writing team to win the best musical Tony (2015). But even without all that - Maps is heartbreaking.
What I love about Fun Home, which is epitomised in Maps, is the non linearity. It is the true story of Alison Bechdel, famous cartoonist, coming to terms with her life as she draws segments from it - and in particular her relationship with her father, a closeted gay man from the generation before her, who killed himself shortly after she came out and started living an openly gay life. It's a heartbreaking story. None of this is a spoiler - the whole plot is told to the audience within the first couple of songs, and the rest of the show is Alison investigating it and coming to terms with it through different moments in her life.
Just like the musical does, Maps manages to hold all those moments co existent as one in Alison's brain. Her map that she is drawing of her home has places marked out by what happened there, and nearly all by milestones to do with her father, the most influential figure in her life that she's still trying to figure out. She sings:
Dad was born on this farm; here's our house
Here's the spot where he died
That "died" sings out on a beautiful unresolved note, pulling back down to the tonic triad in the next bar, but there is a sense in that long note of the agony she is singing - and she circles back to it like on a map, retracing her steps, just like she's reliving everything to do with him in the show, singing
You were born on this farm; here's our house
Here's the spot where you died
Except this time the personal pronoun is closer, even more pained. She keeps singing about the circle he lived inside, and in one sense that's a strong image of a man who was never able to come out. But Alison is always circling too, always returning and reworking her memories, circling back, unable to move on with her life and her identity - until maybe the finale, which gives us that sense that she has finally come to terms with it. It's a beautiful song with such variance. I have SO much love for Fun Home.

It's late at the Pickwick Lighthouse. The triplets cry out in the night. Their mother has died, but they're not alone. For their nanny is there, looking after them.
