BIGGEST DISAPPOINTING AND SURPRISING MOVIES OF 2020
DISAPPOINTMENTS
1. Irresistible
Director: Jon Stewart
Cast: Steve Carell, Chris Cooper, Mackenzie Davis, Topher Grace, Natasha Lyonne, Rose Byrne
Critic’s Notes: I admire Jon Stewart’s first directorial effort Rosewater. So, having him direct a political satire should be a surefire win. But it ends up as a cookie-cutter political comedy that wastes everyone here.
2. Mulan
Director: Niki Caro
Cast: Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Tzi Ma, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Ron Yuan, Gong Li, Jet Li
Critic’s Notes: Dishonor! Dishonor on you Disney! Dishonor on your message! Dishonor on your Disney-remake schemes! Dishonor on your money-grabbing mundanity!
3. Scoob!
Director: Tony Cervone
Cast: Will Forte, Mark Wahlberg, Jason Isaacs, Gina Rodriguez, Zac Efron, Amanda Seyfried, Kiersey Clemons, Ken Jeong, Tracy Morgan and Frank Welker
Critic’s Notes: Ditching the homegrown voice actors is one thing, but ditching the lofty plans for a more cinematic Scooby-Doo film and a Hanna-Barbera cinematic universes? Really risappointing.
4. The Call of the Wild
Director: Chris Sanders
Cast: Harrison Ford, Omar Sy, Cara Gee, Dan Stevens, Karen Gillan, Bradley Whitford, Terry Notary
Critic’s Notes: Please release the director’s cut that only shows the dog’s mo-cap suits. It is delightful to see Ford’s reaction.
5. Wonder Woman 1984
Director: Patty Jenkins
Cast: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, Lilly Aspell
Critic’s Notes: Wonder Woman 1984 cannot hold a candle to its groundbreaking predecessor. It instead plays like a feature-length episode of Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman show. It is not entirely bad, but it is a huge drop of quality.
SURPRISES
1. Bad Boys for Life
Director: Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah
Cast: Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Paola Núñez, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Charles Melton, Jacob Scipio, Kate del Castillo, Nicky Jam, Joe Pantoliano
Critic’s Notes: Really an achievement for a Bad Boys sequel that still kept the over-the-top theatrics of the Michael Bay movies and raised real stakes for the characters of Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett. Perhaps the best and most restrained of the series.
2. Greenland
Director: Ric Roman Waugh
Cast: Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, Roger Dale Floyd, Scott Glenn, David Denman, Hope Davis
Critic’s Notes: Gerard Butler dragged his Angel Has Fallen collaborator and delivered an unexpectedly terrific disaster film. Even if there are some expected tropes, they do not overshadow the core humanity from Gerard Butler.
3. Let Him Go
Director: Thomas Bezucha
Cast: Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Lesley Manville, Will Brittain, Jeffrey Donovan, Kayli Carter, Booboo Stewart
Critic’s Notes: Yellowstone: The Movie looks wonderfully exciting. It is surprising that my parents are gripped on the story. Well, it features a vengeful Diane Lane and Kevin Costner.
4. Love and Monsters
Director: Michael Matthews
Cast: Dylan O'Brien, Jessica Henwick, Dan Ewing, Ariana Greenblatt, Michael Rooker
Critic’s Notes: 2020 is a good year for Brian Duffield (as well as Jessica Henwick), whose writing credits make up for several of the year’s biggest surprises. Love and Monsters blends different genres to make one fun creature-feature.
5. Spontaneous
Director: Brian Duffield
Cast: Katherine Langford, Charlie Plummer, Hayley Law, Piper Perabo, Rob Huebel, Yvonne Orji, Laine MacNeil
Critic’s Notes: Finally, here is Brian Duffield’s most ultimate surprise. The source material is so weird and dark in places. Yet, he pulled it off the premise of teenagers’ heads spontaneously combusting. The blend of black comedy, YA romance and horror makes this a pleasant ride.
