what is with this guy whipping out a random Hatsune Miku cross dress on us all bc apparently it would be too suspicious for Mayumi undercover as a guy walking around without a girlfriend on his arm bc she turns out to be such a good looking guy so this dude decided to dress as Hatsune and pretend to be her fake girlfriend out of nowhere

okay okay okay I’m close enough to done with craftageddon that I let myself read one of my shojo beat sale volumes today, I started with yakuza lover cuz I expected it to be fairly generic and middle-of-the-road (much like yakuza fiancee(? yakuza boyfriend? something with a very similar title I got in a kodansha sale), which is not the same series) but it way exceeded my expectations!
the heroine is a rather taiga-type personality, deeply strong-willed but intrinsically romantic and easily wooed, but taiga (from black panther and sweet 16) would generally only ever be sweet or bullheaded, kind of on a toggle switch, and yuri has more variety to her moods than that. to the point of straight up kitty brat dom in the last chapter of the volume, which is fuckin choice. we love to see it. her sexuality is portrayed with very little shame, too, though the visuals are almost completely censored and the vulgar language is minimal. she is shown experiencing desire through more than just blushing, and has multiple Horny Dreams about him. afterwards she is often like “omg I had no idea attraction could be like this???” but she never seems to feel any guilt which is great. she just generally feels very solid despite only having a couple concrete Facts presented (only one of which felt at all clumsily presented, and even that was only mild).
the love interest is also compelling, though it may very well be mostly because he’s “mysterious”, although it feels genuinely believable that she’d be swept up in all this and he’s probably as much an ordinary person as anyone else who. happens to be a very high-level yakuza. so we get the thrill of a dangerous man, as well as the thrill of a rich man who doesn’t understand how extravagant he is, but so far he has only been dangerous in his professional life and very respectful of her in their personal lives. he waited until she approached him, without any mind games, and said outright she wanted to be his lover, and at a prior meeting even gently suggested they stop at just making out for the night, which she was happy with. he even went along with her brat domming without any resistance at all, despite outright asking her to please let him move and clearly being physically capable of overpowering her if he chose to. he doesn’t have a ton of personality yet, but the whole reason he was attracted to her in the first place was her own aggressive side, and he clearly also loves her sweet cute side, and he seems to have no interest in tempering either aspect of her personality. which we also love to see. also he’s very pretty, which is the point.
absolutely fucking choice couple, really really solid. not very thorough characterization but feels surprisingly solid, and the dynamics and the relationship are totally choice without feeling rushed at all. way better than I expected, I almost feel bad for starting with it when I’ve got shit like hot gimmick and honey hunt also in the queue, which I specifically bought for having a vague recollection of them being very Shojo Beat Standard when I’d get backissues from the local gamestore once upon a time.
there is technically an age gap, although she is already 20 when they meet and he’s still drawn pretty young so personally I feel it’s only mildly questionable at worst, and obviously there is a massive power gap that she doesn’t seem to think about, although he has consistently not used that to his advantage. there is a lot of on-screen-but-obscured sex, a couple nips, a couple swears, some guns, and one injury with blood spatter (with the actual wound obscured) but, yknow. all that is very par for the course imo. less par for the course but not wildly out of genre expectations is a scene near the beginning where she walks in on some folks using probably-cocaine at a party, who then bodily grab her and her friend and try to force them to join in so they can’t report them without incriminating themselves? which may be a little rougher than the rest but was short, and she’d pretty much gotten them out of it before he even turned up.
edit: wait hang on I forgot to write down that I Do Not Like how they draw his teeth sometimes, just way too realistic, but that's my only complaint about the art.
edit 2: boss wife was the other one I was thinking of.

Japan Box Office: Shin Ultraman Repeats at No.1 with Strong 486 Million Yen
After making its impressive debut last weekend, Shin Ultraman has kept its No.1 spot for two consecutive weeks.
The Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan live-action films, Shin Godzilla)-directed all-new live-action film inspired by Tsuburaya Production's original Ultraman TV series in 1966-1967 earned a still-strong 486 million yen (3.8 million USD) on 312,000 admissions in its second weekend, bringing its total to 2 billion yen (15.65 million USD) on 1.34 million admissions. The two-week gross was about 93 percent of that of Higuchi's previous film in 2016, Shin Godzilla.
RELATED: Japan Box Office: Shin Ultraman Beats Conan, Making Impressive No.1 Debut
A film that outperformed Shin Ultraman in terms of per theater revenue was The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie, a sequel to the two-season TV anime adaptation of Negi Haruba's romantic comedy manga. The 136-minute film was released in 108 theaters across Japan (Shin Ultraman had 362 theaters in its opening weekend) on May 20, then earned an impressive 267 million yen (2.09 million USD) on 200,000 admissions, making its second place debut. Its three-day total reached 390 million yen (3.05 million USD) on 290,000 admissions.
The film even ranked No.1 on Filmarks' first day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 4.15/5.0 based on 520 reviews.
Coming in third was Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween, which earned 238 million yen (1.86 million USD) on 166,000 admissions in its sixth weekend. Its total box office gross has reached 7.9 billion yen (61.82 million USD) and surpassed that of the Conan anime franchise's third top-grossing film, The Scarlet Bullet (2021 / 7.65 billion yen).
As expected by many people, The Avenger Scar, the first part of the Fullmetal Alchemist Complete Edition, the two-part live-action film sequel of Hiromu Arakawa's internationally popular fantasy action manga Fullmetal Alchemist, bombed at the Japanese box office.
Despite the wide release with 349 theaters and the large amount of publicity on TV, the 125-minute film made a disappointing 72 million yen (563,510 USD) and ranked ninth in its opening weekend. The opening weekend gross was only 27 percent of that of the first live-action film in 2017. It is expected to disappear from the top 10 next weekend. The second part Fullmetal Alchemist: Final Transmutation is set to be released on June 24.
The live-action film adaptation of the Naoki Prize-winning author Mizuki Tsujimura's popular novel Haken Anime! failed to rank in the top 10 in its opening weekend. Meanwhile, the film about the Japanese anime industry ranked second in Filmarks' first day satisfaction ranking with an average rating of 4.00/5.0 based on 1,265 reviews.
Also, Yuki no Maki, the first part of the trilogy film project Toku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru ~Setsugetsuka~, didn't make it to the box office top 10 in its opening weekend. Its average rating in Filmarks' first day satisfaction ranking was 3.60/5.0 (based on 70 reviews).

Anime for the Romantically Awkward and the Awkwardly Romantic
Valentine's Day is fast approaching, love is in the air, and the stores are filled with heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and crimson greeting cards expressing all levels of romantic passion. But even though anime is a medium that is filled to bursting with romance, some of us fans realize that falling in love isn't always bouquets of roses and dancing beneath the stars.
Sometimes love is toothpaste stains on the bathroom mirror and cold, bony feet poking you from the other end of the blanket, and frankly, that sentiment deserves some recognition, too. Below you can find a curated list of awkwardly romantic and romantically awkward anime titles, the perfect sort of thing to throw a kink into your typical Valentine's Day viewing.
Whether you've got a yen for mismatched couples, a hankering for romantic miscommunications and similar shenanigans, or a burning desire to pluck Cupid's wings and cut his bowstring in half, we've got a series or two that might be right for you.
  Odd Couples
    MY love STORY!! (2015)
Kicking things off with a cuter, cuddlier entry, MY love STORY!! features a primary romantic pairing between Takeo Goda, a big and burly high school student with a penchant for judo, and Rinko Yamato, a petite girl who likes to bake. Their romance is initially complicated by Takeo assuming Rinko is attracted to his best friend, the traditionally handsome Makoto Sunakawa, but once this misconception is ironed out, My love STORY!! is an excellent if unconventional look at romance.
MY love STORY!! does a great job dealing with issues of communication and consent while also skillfully navigating the conflicts caused by friendships and romantic rivalries. The series gets bonus points for Takeo being one of the sweetest, most pure-hearted protagonists in the genre, and for the positive qualities expressed through the relationships of other characters, such as Takeo's parents.
MY love STORY!! is available via streaming on Crunchyroll and on U.S. home video via Sentai Filmworks.
    Mysterious Girlfriend X (2012)
On the other end of the spectrum we've got Mysterious Girlfriend X, a story about the unusual high school romance between Akira Tsubaki and Mikoto Urabe, a boy and a girl who share an almost psychic connection brought about by Akira consuming Mikoto's saliva on a regular basis. The central idea sounds kinda revolting at first, but if you give Mysterious Girlfriend X a chance, you'll discover that the show is way brainier and more sophisticated than the premise would appear at first blush.
Mysterious Girlfriend X is available via streaming on Crunchyroll and on U.S. home video via Sentai Filmworks.
Other "Odd Couples" options for the discerning viewer: Sakura Trick, Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
  Missed Communications
    Princess Jellyfish (2010)
If you like a little romance mixed with a gigantic portion of self-pity and Impostor Syndrome, then Princess Jellyfish is the show for you. Centered on a group of geeky ladies living in a rundown boarding house, Princess Jellyfish focuses on the unlikely love triangle that forms between Tsukimi Kurashita, an aspiring illustrator with severe self-confidence issues, Kuranosuke Koibuchi, a young man whose love of fashion and cross-dressing annoys his rich and powerful politician father, and Shu Koibuchi, Kuranosuke's strait-laced elder half-brother.
Of course, no one is able to express their true feelings without coming across like a complete goober, but that's the charm of Princess Jellyfish. The original manga by Akiko Higashimura (available from Kodansha Comics) is also outstanding.
Princess Jellyfish is available via streaming and on U.S. home video from Funimation.
    Toradora! (2008 - 2009)
The classic pattern in romance is often paraphrased as “boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back again”, but Toradora! is more along the lines of “boy meets girl, girl attempts to pummel boy to death with a baseball bat, hijinx ensue”.
In Toradora!, Ryuji Takasu and Taiga Aisaka team up in an effort to pursue their mutual crushes, but the sharp-eyed boy with the gentle-demeanor and the pint-sized dynamo girl eventually fall in love despite initially aiming for relationships with other people. Along the way it plumbs the depths of adolescent romance with a surprising degree of pathos and nuance, so if you like your relationships feisty and complicated, give Toradora! a try.
Toradora! is available via streaming on Crunchyroll and on U.S. home video from NIS America.
Other "Missed Communications" options for the savvy viewer: Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun, KAGUYA-SAMA: LOVE IS WAR
  General Misanthropy
WATAMOTE ~No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys' Fault I’m Not Popular!~ (2013)
Even people who are currently involved in happy, well-adjusted romantic relationships can probably remember what it's like to look for love in all the wrong places, and that describes Tomoko Kuroki, the extremely anti-social heroine of WATAMOTE, to a 'T'.
While Tomoko suffers from crippling social anxiety, she's also kind of a terrible person, and her conceptions of love and friendship have been terminally poisoned by a non-stop diet of otaku pop culture and online discourse. Despite everything, Tomoko just wants to be loved, but she's also her own worst enemy, and who among us can't identify with that?
WATAMOTE ~No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys Fault I’m Not Popular!~ is available via streaming on Crunchyroll and on U.S. home video via Sentai Filmworks.
    The Tatami Galaxy (2010)
Sometimes it takes a Groundhog Day-like scenario for the so-called “nice guys” to realize that often they're not really the heroes of their own romantic epics, but rather they're the villains. The unnamed protagonist of The Tatami Galaxy loops through numerous college-level curricula, joining different clubs each time in an effort to find his ideal “raven-haired beauty” and to live the “rosy college life” of his dreams.
Needless to say, nothing goes according to plan, and one of the highlights of The Tatami Galaxy is when “Watashi” and his partner-in-crime, Ozu, declare themselves to be “black Cupids” and subsequently dedicate their free-time to monkey-wrenching the dates of happy couples. It's perfect Valentine's Day viewing for the romantically disinclined.
The Tatami Galaxy is available via streaming and on U.S. home video from Funimation.
  BONUS ROUND!
    Baki (2018)
The 2018 Baki anime on Netflix is less interested in romance and more interested in taking big beefy dudes and smacking them together like a toddler playing with a handful of G.I. Joe action figures. When the baby-faced protagonist Baki and his girlfriend Kozue finally consummate their relationship, what results is both mind-blowing hilarity and head-scratching peculiarity as the audience is subjected to a galaxy brain-level X-ray vision vignette, Baki's new-found sex-blessed martial arts prowess, and a lecture from Yujiro Hanma about the birds and the bees. 11/10 stars, would “apply damage” again.
Baki is available via streaming on Netflix.
Well, there you have it: a selection of anime titles that look at the concepts of love and romance from a slightly askew angle. Some are life-affirming, some are off-beat but uplifting, and some of them aren't nearly so optimistic, but all in all it's a heaping helping of atypical romance, just in time for Valentine's Day.
The above list is not meant to be exhaustive. Anime is a vast and varied medium, so there are sure to be other series that make for ideal Valentine's Day programming for those of us that want a little more cringe in our festivities. What are your favorite anime with weird angles or awkward romances? Be sure to let us know in the comments section below!

Bookshelf Briefs 2/11/22
Boy Meets Maria | By PEYO | Seven Seas – Taiga is a high school student who falls in love at first sight with a fellow drama club member. Initially he assumes the person is a girl, but is later told his new crush is a boy. Delightfully, he promptly decides it doesn’t matter to him one way or another. It should be noted, however, that at least some of his classmate’s complicated relationship with gender is deeply rooted in psychological abuse and sexual assault, and these are things that are shown and not just hinted at in the manga. Ultimately though, Boy Meets Maria focuses on hope and love while acknowledging past traumas. What really makes the manga work so well is its cast, but Taiga in particular. He has a sort of ridiculous personality and an oblivious nature, allowing him to be inherently honest with and open to others, which in turn allows them to be free. – Ash Brown
Kageki Shojo!!, Vol. 3 | By Kumiko Saiki | Seven Seas – Having spent a while introducing us to the two leads, we now get to flesh out the rest of the cast of Kageki Shojo!! in this volume, starting with the twins, who are, needless to say, dealing with twin issues. Which is to say that Chiaki is feeling down about being unable to get into the school on the first try like her sister, and her sister then gets mistaken for her, and… it’s a mess, but you can probably guess how it goes. There’s also some friction among the second years, as Sarasa’s flakiness is starting to upset the others, who are taking it out on her mentor for not disciplining her more. Basically, it’s a big Takarazuka soap opera, and that’s exactly what we signed up for, so I’m happy. – Sean Gaffney
Murcielago, Vol. 17 | By Yoshimurakana | Yen Press – I forgot to review this when it came out, only noticing when eighteen was released. The dangers of getting everything digital thanks to COVID now. In any case, my favorite part of this volume is probably the relationship between Chiyo and Kuroko. It looked a bit questionable at the start of the series, but as we’ve gotten to know both of them (OK, mostly Kuroko) we see that Chiyo is a bit different from her usual bedmates. Most of this volume revolves around a yakuza ally of Chiyo’s who is out of prison… and another man from a rival gang who now wants to fight him. It uses Kuroko more as a spice, which works very well. This is still filled with sex and violence, but I still enjoy it. – Sean Gaffney
The Savior’s Book Cafe Story in Another World, Vol. 1 | By Kyouka Izumi, Oumiya, and Reiko Sakurada | Seven Seas There’s not much in this we haven’t seen in other shoujo isekai series: a woman gets chosen by God to save the world, is given awesome powers… and uses them to open a book cafe in the middle of nowhere, because she’s thirty years old, not sixteen. Meanwhile, the other savior chosen is busy being an absolute nightmare in the palace, but has the ear of the prince. Which means much as I’d love for us to stay at the cafe and watch Tsukina clean the shelves using incredibly powerful magic, I think she’s going to get dragged into things. That said, overall the vibe to this book is peaceful and relaxing, and I recommend it to fans of the genre. – Sean Gaffney
A Sign of Affection, Vol. 5 | By Suu Morishita | Kodansha Comics (digital) – Just as readers are here pretty much for the cute and adorable romance between our two leads, any love rivals that may be on the table are also flummoxed by them. Sure, there’s worry, and jealousy, and a lot of “why is that not me?,” but honestly I think they simply run into the fact that the couple is so wonderful together that trying to intervene would be like kicking a puppy. And, again I love the way the lettering is handled here, with the grey text and the occasional backwards phrase showing Yuki’s hearing loss in a way that’s very comprehensible to us all. It really is one of my favorite shoujo series, and I always make time for it when a new volume comes out. – Sean Gaffney
Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle, Vol. 16 | By Kagiji Kumanomata | Viz Media The bulk of this volume is devoted to Princess Syalis and the Cursed Musician/pastry chef accidentally being sent back in time via grimoire… only to find, after Syalis steals a down comforter that is legendary for helping with sleep, that the world is now totally different… and the demons are a lot more competent. This is terrible news for Syalis, who might actually start to get treated like a prisoner. That said, the message is pretty clear, and I too prefer my demons goofy and a bit hapless. In other news, Syalis gets a massage… though not a sexy massage, this is not that kind of series. But if it’s comedy you like, with a dash of heartwarming, it’s hard to go wrong with this. – Sean Gaffney

Japan Box Office: Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur Makes No.1 Debut with 413 Million Yen
After a five-month delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur, the 40th feature film in the Doraemon anime franchise, released in 377 theaters across Japan on August 7, 2020. The Doraemon films have been usually released in March in Japan, but its original release date of March 6 had been moved to August 7.
The Doraemon manga's 50th-anniversary film earned 413 million yen on 334,000 admissions on its first Saturday and Sunday, ranking No.1 in the weekend box office. However, it was only 59 percent of the first Saturday-Sunday gross of the franchise's previous 39th film Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of the Moon Exploration released in March 2019. New Dinosaur made 761 million yen in its first four days, which was approximately the same amount as the first three-day gross of Moon Exploration.
The previous three weeks' box office winner, the live-action feature film adaptation of Hiroyuki Nishimori's comedy manga Kyo Kara Ore Wa!! dropped to second place with 218 million yen. The film's total domestic gross has reached an impressive 3.34 billion yen, becoming the director Yuichi Fukuda's third most successful film in his career, behind only the two Gintama live-action films in 2017 and 2018.
Meanwhile, the live-action film adaptation of Kenji Inoue (story) and Kimitake Yoshioka (art)'s seinen manga Grand Blue ranked fourth with 110 million yen in its opening weekend. And, despite its limited release only in 28 screens, Revue starlight: Rondo Rondo Rondo, the "re-production" compilation film based on the 12-episode TV anime series in 2018, ranked 11th in the weekend box office and No.1 in Kogyotsushinsha's mini-theater ranking.
