I just watched Keep Sweet and am both disturbed but also feeling like a lot was left out? Have you seen it?
I have seen it 3 times lol, I actually thought it was one of the most comprehensive FLDS/Warren Jeffs accounts I've seen so far (the FLDS are one of the cults I'm most interested in just in case you're new here). I'm curious what you felt was left out.

Capturing the Killer Nurse
Tumblr media
Capturing the Killer Nurse is a 2022 documentary film about serial killer Charles Cullen and how investigators were able to prove how Cullen was killing patients while working in hospitals and a nursing home as a nurse in the United States.
Now, I know there’s an Eddie Redmayne movie that fictionalises this story, but I have no interest in watching that so I watched this instead. It’s pretty good and it is insane how he got away with this for so long.
Keep Sweet, Pray and Obey
Tumblr media
In interviews and rare home video footage, ex-FLDS members share the truth about their isolated community — and the events that pushed them to leave.

So I’m watching Keep Sweet, Pray, and Obey on Netflix and they’re talking about how the FLDS believe that a man needs to have at least 3 wives to enter the gates of Heaven and get cool god powers and this one guy keeps complaining about how he only has 2 wives and I couldn’t get this image out of my head

I HIGHLY recommend Keep Sweet Pray and Obey on Netflix. It’s crazy how alike all these fundie cults are. Warren Jeffs is fucking evil.

I felt like it was condensed in parts and skipped over details like follow up questions that were not asked/included but I work in 🎥 so maybe I am biased. One example, revealing that the men who left were actually kicked out was well done from a narrative perspective but that then brings up the question: would they still be there had they not been kicked out? That information (plus knowing one had two wives and twenty kids) colors those interviews differently. Same with the Ruby/Joe storyline, it was clear she had more to say and he was not asked certain things despite seeming willing. Also, felt like there was something missing from Alicia/Leroy and how she got to be where she is today. It was really done from a craft/storytelling perspective but it felt like skimming the surface instead of a full investigative deep dive and was wondering if for people aware of the FLDS, there was any brand new information in KS.

Oh man if you're in the production biz I bet that happens a lot......., especially with Netflix docs which even my pedestrian ass has a lot of issues with lol. For me it's hard to see glaring holes as far as information because I've consumed SO much FLDS media, like everything I can get my hands on, so they can all run together sometimes. I think for that reason my brain just automatically fills in story gaps if I know what's supposed to go there, for example "would the men still be there if Warren Jeffs hadn't kicked them out", I know the answer is generally Yes because of interviews with the men in the past. I agree with you about the personal stories/narratives though, those were unique to this doc and it did feel like they could've given us more there. I think personal narratives are so important to stories like these because they bring it home for people with no religious experience, so leaving something to be desired there is doing a disservice to the topic and people involved. I think as far as focus they were really trying to concentrate on the women and girls in Warren's immediate circle and as far as new information, I know for me there definitely was some. If you've been here awhile you know I get questions about updates on Warren's ex-wives pretty frequently, especially Naomie or any of the ones that went public, and the doc provided that as well as a lot of new information about their FLDS lives. I also have never seen as extensive of a dive done into the temple and practices done within it (the dreaded last episode that so many people hate) so that was new and interesting to me.
2. Yea I think first anon would agree with you. The story is so far reaching, with so many tentacles that I think it's very hard to do a completely comprehensive single documentary. This one in particular I think was mainly focusing on the women and girls in Warren's immediate circle and I think picking a particular focus is a good idea just because of how expansive the story is, it can feel disjointed if you try to include everything and don't do it well. But I agree with you that the information you mentioned is very important to the story.

The fact Warren Jeff had these folks so brain washed. He had his own young wives circle around him ti watch and assist as he literally raped and took a child (bride) virginity.
Even more sickening is him recording that shit. I mean it's good that it was recorded for the fact to be used as evidence against him. But the sick fuck recorded his cruelty.

i'm not going to pretend that i understand what it's like to be flds, nor will i equivalate brighamite/corporate church trauma to flds trauma. but damn it is exhausting and triggering seeing people who have never lived a day in a high-demand group (hdg) treat documentaries and fiction based on irl groups like it's the latest release of their favorite show.
you people need to be fucking careful about how you interact w/ hdg media. you know someone who was in one if you live in the so-called united states. we see how you treat our trauma like a new marvel movie, or the latest season of stranger things, or like a rerun of goosebumps. yes, be horrified, but your pain and shock will never be the same as the lives we had to abandon and rebuild. if you're white, your rage should never take up more space in conversations about hdgs as the voices of those who have been harmed by hdgs, and the voices of people directly targeted by their (very often) yt supremacist beliefs.
