And you get a Tiger & Bunny ficlet!

Tiger & Bunny, Kotetsu/Tomoe, Brushing

The hairbrush caught on a knot and pulled, and Kotetsu winced. "Sorry."

He couldn't see Tomoe's face, with her back turned toward him as it was, but the smile in her voice was audible. "It's all right. It didn't hurt."

He believed her—he did—but his eyes still flicked to the IV in her hand and the medicine that steadily dripped into the tubing. The last thing she needed right now was her husband yanking on her hair, even if it "didn't hurt."

So as someone who loves the game of playing K-Drama trope bingo (the game does vary for J-Dramas, Korean movies, etc. but also fun), I have to ask about the All the Tropes in Asian Drama story??? 👀

Aha! The idea for this spawned off this tumblr post, and I decided to write something for it, a story which eventually became The Past Cannot Be Cured.

However, there are just so many tropes, that I've kept the list around as a kind of ongoing prompt list. 😝

I'm considering the idea of running an event with them as prompts in 2024 actually...

There wasn't any way he was going to get up to the roof before the rest of the explosives went off, but he could put as much distance between himself and them as possible. He'd just reached the fire escape door when someone grabbed his hand, and he heard, "Gotcha." Then the generator room disappeared.

Two were sitting in a tree forty feet off the ground, waving at the others below who were trying to mimic their feat. Another group had started up some complicated card game that didn't look like poker or Uno, which were the only two Pit knew. Judging by the number of rulebooks involved in the current argument, it was one he probably wasn't interested in learning anyway.

Here you go! I intentionally gave you extra sentences on Thrall, too, not just the three!

As if she knew what Agatha was thinking, Wanda says, very gently, “Agnes?”

Agatha swallows, brushes the pad of her thumb along Wanda’s lips one last time, and leans back.  “Keep your eyes closed, hon!  Here, hold onto me.”  She stands and helps Wanda to stand before leading her in front of Sarah’s tall mirror.  “Only you’ll have to do something with your hair, dear, because I…I couldn’t do anything about that.”

Not without you catching me out.

It’s the sharp intake of breath that gives Wanda away more than anything, the way her cheeks darken as she looks over herself, as she moves closer to the mirror, the breathless little way she murmurs, “Wow,” under her breath.  Her fingers run through her oily, stringy hair, cleansing it without a second thought, pulling it into much gentler waves.  She whispers it again, “Wow,” before turning to Agatha with wide emerald eyes.  “You made me beautiful.”

Now you see yourself the way I see you.

Agatha gives a little shake of her head.  “You’ve always been that, dear.  You just do a pretty good job of hiding it.”

Okay I must ask about A Frog in Hot Water? 👀🐸♨️

Ahhh, this is the fic that fills in a possible version of the missing scene where Jiraiya infamously got his ass handed to him by Tsunade for peeping; the one he refers to when he says he's almost died twice in his life and that was one of them. I'm setting it in an already-demilitarised Yugakure, just under a decade prior to the start of canon, and the POV character is a certain little Yugakure genin with silver hair, purple eyes, and an overwhelming desire to cause problems on purpose. ;) Snippet below the cut, and thank you for asking!

~~~ Yugakure no Sato. Village Hidden in Hot Water.

Hidan personally thought that they should just drop the gakure from the name. There was only so hidden you could claim to be when you regularly sent glossy full-colour brochures to every other shinobi village in the Lands; and the shinobi of those villages definitely got the brochures, because they showed up in droves. Village Buried in Tourists, Hidan thought, with the familiar kick of frustration, as he scampered along the wide road that ran through the heart of the daytime guest district. There were people everywhere, a buzzing blur of accents, a rainbow of clothes and styles. Hitai-ate from every other village out there, scattered among the much larger crowds of wide-eyed civilians who stared in wonder at the real live ninja around them.

Because of course that was Yugakure's selling point, its unique draw. The hot springs and tea houses and host clubs kept the tourists busy while they were here, but the reason everyone came here in the first place instead of going to other onsen towns was because only Yugakure offered all those things with a hitai-ate on top. Outside shinobi visited because they enjoyed the freedom to be themselves on their downtime without having to worry about frightening the staff the way they did in civilian-run resorts; but civilians flocked here because it was the only village in the world where they could get close enough to ooh and ahh and see and touch real shinobi without losing an arm for trying.

And if your karma sucked enough to have been born here, it was like living in a kami-damned petting zoo.

WIP Wednesday Game

It’s WIP Wednesday, time for a little accountability, sharing your work, and getting a kick in the pants.

Here’s how it works:

In a reblog of this post (so people can find you in the notes) or new thread (w/ rules attached) if you want to play on your own, post up to five (5) filenames of your WIPs; not titles, file names.

Post a snippet from one of them. Snippet must be words you wrote in the last 7 days. We’re posting progress here. If you haven’t made any, go make some and come back to play!

of the beaten path Zukka author/fic recs please? Zukka fic is the thing standing between me and a meltdown these days

Let's see, off the beaten path definitely depends on the personal rabit holes you've fallen down, but some maybe less known fics I haven't seen mentioned as much:

The Best Laid Intentions Series by amidsizedfrog - a really fun, snappy, hilarious writing style, and a great Katara-Zuko bestie-ism dynamic throughout

How To Not Deal With a Fuck Or Die Situation by anarchycox - hilarious premise, hilarious execution. Anarchycox has a real talent for fully exploring absurdity in a way that feels approachable and real, I'd recommend all their stuff

Bae's Anatomy by aiyah - a fun established relationship dynamic in a Modern AU, and fun smut

The Road Between Action and Inaction by Donvex - a slower burn roadtrip AU, the way they got to know each other and got comfortable with each other was such a delight to read

i hate accidents except from when we went from friends to this by triplefire - a 5+1 full of accidental proposals and low-angst miscommunication, my favorite things lol

Mark Time by foil - this might be more on the beaten path, but if you want your heart ripped out of your chest, this will do it. Mind the tags though, it deals with some heavy topics (tastefully and well)

At The Top of the World by Lady_of_the_Flowers - might also be more on the beaten path, but I can never do a rec list without mentioning Lady of the Flowers amazing work. This is a Modern AU with such a great interpretation of the characters and canon dynamics into our world

Young Love by Kalira - I love me an external POV, and seeing the Zukka relationship through Hakoda's eyes in the Western Air Temple was so much fun

Also this list by @zukka-simp of Zukka authors who deserve a raise has been keeping me in fics for weeks now, checking out authors I hadn't heard of before

So I was chatting with @kalira last night and we got to talking about older file formats and programs (because we started writing on Ye Olde Computers), and I mentioned how my very first fics are all in .wri format, which was the old Microsoft Write program from like...Windows 3.1. I had converted a couple of those old documents to .doc and .rtf back in the early aughts, but there were probably 6 or 7 that I’d never converted, which was Not Great as time marched on and .wri files became deprecated.

Over the past ~10 years, literally nothing I have tried would open those files; all the Microsoft stuff I can find basically says to use WordPad, which will (technically) open the files, but they are chock-full of so many random characters that they’re virtually unusable. I figured I’d have to manually pull the content out of each one, but as these are all novel-length stories...uh...that was going to be an Intensive Process.

Anyway, after that, I woke up this morning thinking that, hey, it’s been a few years since I’ve tried; I should search again and see if I can find anything that can open .wri files so I can save them in a newer, readable format.

What I found was an article that said, basically, “try LibreOffice.” The most recent review I found said that it would open most legacy file types, and honestly as long as it would 1) open them in a readable format and 2) let me copy-paste them into a new Word doc, then I was going to be a happy camper.

So I installed it, figuring what the hell, and used it to open the oldest .wri file on my system, a Star Wars fic.

And for the first time in nearly 20 years, I could READ MY FIRST FANFIC.

I’ve now opened and saved all of those old files as .docx files, so God willing, they should be readable for a long time to come.

So this is just a reminder: if you have old files that you haven’t converted to a newer format, do that before you (potentially) lose that ability entirely. And if you have legacy file types like .wri files specifically, give LibreOffice a try to get them open again.
