I open my eyes. To my surprise, lies a raccoon by my bedside: on all fours, by rummaged nightstands and drawers! I surmise that she entered through my open door. Yet I give salutations, acknowledging that the absurd is commonplace amidst our ever-changing lives.

“Break the Stigma” is a one-page comic that (though having been written during the winter of 2020) was completed on April 30, 2022. During its creation, I was inspired by my own life. In “Break the Stigma,” a young man argues with another who discriminates based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

“Break the Stigma” was written by Justus Reinhardt (@ReinhardtComics). The comic was beautifully drawn, inked and shaded by Tiano (@Tian_Art15 on Instagram). It was gorgeously colored by Giraaz Studio (@GiraazStudio). It was exquisitely lettered by Boknoy Buhisan.

Furthermore, I've recently decided to weave my stories into a webcomic entitled, “Long-Lost Innocence.” It’s an ongoing webcomic and shared universe in which many of my characters can be found. It’s named after my first ever comic. While this webcomic is in its beginning stages, the content will range from comedic, fantastical, inspirational and even romantic.

I composed this many years ago. It’s about someone who drifted away from me toward the end of our relationship, ultimately causing a breakup. Later, closure was found. I hope for some to relate to these sentiments.

Upon Parched Roots is a love poem that was written about an old relationship of mine. It brought me great joy, despite the two of us having gone our separate ways. I’ve written another single page comic about a girl who realizes that the first step in overcoming dependence, is seeking the support of others. I’ve gone through a similar journey and hope to show that mental illnesses are debilitating – despite the stigma that they are easier to deal with than physical health problems. I had less free time during the school year to write for pleasure and to submit my work for publication. Now, classes have ended and I am collaborating with artist, Fariz Muzakki. I’m incredibly passionate about comics, and after having recently written a twenty page paper on the subject, I have high hopes for this project. As always, I’ll continue writing and won’t give up on my dream.

24 May 2019 Update – I received an A+ on my twenty page paper and can now say that I’ve written a comic. I’d still like to get it professionally published in the near future, but regardless of how long it takes, I feel accomplished and recognize that I’m only at the tip of the iceberg. One page? It still felt amazing.

Progression is a deeply personal story about a girl who realizes that she must seek love and support to overcome self-harm.

Long-Lost Innocence is about a stern, war-hardened man who comes to the realization that despite his past, violence is not the answer.

Establishing Myself as an Author

I’ve become far less critical of others. However, I still criticize myself despite that I put much effort into what I do. Like anyone, I’m imperfect and lack motivation in more than one area of my life. For now, I guess I’ll have to deal with the fact that there will be times where I regret submitting certain compositions and consequently worry over having to withdraw them. I may sometimes feel discontent with what I write, and I certainly know that I am not as great of a writer as some, but I truly believe that my strength lies in that I am open-minded, committed, and always eager to learn. At times, I think it is good to linger on one’s work until one is ready, but I also feel that one must take small steps forward every day (and it's certainly a learning experience to launch one's projects into the world). I have faith that I will publish my poetry, stories, and comics, and this may even happen sooner than later. Right now, the most important thing is that I’m constantly learning, expressing myself, and having fun in the process.
