Arkhelios Adventures
Tumblr media
"Are you sure I look okay? I want her to like me. She usually just ignores me when she's over."
"Trust me, you look amazing. I'm a makeover genius."
Elaine hovered by her friend, admiring her efforts. Their exact relationship was complicated to figure out, so Juliet and Elaina just agreed to be friends. Was the daughter of a robot butler who had once dated Juliet's mom family? Not really. Elaina and her brother lived under the same roof as Juliet, so they felt like siblings at least. Their home situation could only be described as complicated at best.
Ironman and Nikolai had found their way back to each other after Ironman's run from the altar, though not immediately. Nikolai had had a few angry flings and Ironman had spent nearly a year "reprogramming" himself with both a therapist and Orianna's technical know-how. When their parents reunited, Elaina, Nick and the son Nikolai had had with a one night stand all moved back in at the Helios manor. Elaine, Launce, Benvolio and Oriana had welcomed them all back, as had the shy Juliet. Because she was created with undead, mutated genes, Juilet wasn't conventionally attractive and had definitely noticed the difference in how others treated her and her friends. Most people shuddered when she arrived on a lot, some even wondering if she'd somehow escaped Wanda's Zombie Relocation program. The world was a cruel place, especially when her own mother saw Juliet as a failed project or at best, the first draft in an experiment she couldn’t see to completion.
Because Oriana had tied her life force to Benvolio, they were living on borrowed time together and unable to produce a natural child. Oriana had refused to listen to the demons who had explained this and had tried several different methods of procreation, all of them failures. Her life force had dimmed to the point that she couldn't even get an embryo to form in a laboratory. Every cell in her body was dying slowly and there was nothing science could do to fix that.
And so she had settled for Juliet, the daughter made with cloned cells of zombified Benvolio. Juliet the prototype. Juliet the failure.
Elaine was still the mistress of the manor, and the Helios heir in control of the estate. She was kind to Juliet and the other children, especially with Launce by her side. She told everyone in the house that they were welcome to live at the manor even when she passed on the ownership to her heir, which was a relief. No one wanted to deal with the whims of Elaine's heir, especially now.
Lucy Helios was something of a legend in Arkhelios, in the same manner that her nephew was. She was infamous worldwide and larger than life whenever someone had the bad luck to encounter her. Juliet was terrified of her, but her kids seemed nice enough. It was Noelle who she was psyching herself up to greet that night.
Noelle was the queen bee of the lower grades at the Pleasantview Academy of Magic and getting on her good side was the only way someone like Juliet would find acceptance in the world. Noelle had the same domineering, confident personality of her mother, with none of the playfulness. She wasn't even that talented of a witch, but her stepmother had pulled enough strings to get Noelle admitted, and Noelle had done the rest. Juliet looked at a guy like Theo, who attended the school because of his immense raw talent and a girl like Noelle, whose powers seemed to be more oriented to social manipulation and wondered who was more powerful in the end. It would be Noelle who inherited Juliet's house one day, so it never hurt to try to be friendly.
"She's here! Get ready!"
Elaina's brother ran down the hall, calling out to the girls.
Tumblr media
Well, ready or not, here she is.
Tumblr media
Noelle glared at the car that had deposited her and her little brother on the driveway of her grandmother's house.
"I don't see why we couldn't have teleported here," she grumbled, holding her little brother's hand so that he wouldn't run out on the street. "Mom's so desperate to look good for this boring place, even though she never comes here."
It had been a turbulent few years for Noelle, with her mother's breaking up with Mikel's father and moving full time to Pleasantview to live with her new wife. Lucy hadn't told anyone yet, but Noelle could see clear as day that she was going to be getting a new sibling soon, which meant that she moved even further down the list of her mother's priorities.
Tumblr media
"Come on, Mikel. The faster we get inside, the faster this will be over with and we can go home."
"Noelle! You're here! Hi!"
Noelle glanced at the house where three kids, all dressed in purple dresses waved like they were in some sort of cringe parade. Great.
"Hey. Where's Grandma? I think Mikel is hungry or something."
The trio of kids tried to hide their disappointment at her words but kept smiling.
Tumblr media
"Mikel! Who's my favourite yellow eyed demon? Who's going to be a great lawyer some day unlike his degenerate parents?"
Noelle stared at her grandmother with disgust. Her grandmother barely tolerated half of her grandkids, but she'd been reading up about the hierarchies of demons lately and discovered that her grandson had potential because of his father. While Elaine had sneered at her daughter’s child with her boss initially, further research had indicated that Mikel would be respected by other demons despite being half-human and that was enough for Elaine. If her daughter insisted on bringing home demons, then Elaine would at least make sure that they were high quality demons.
"You're supporting a biological hierarchy that's just a construct of demon society, Elaine," Noelle sneered, looking bored after being in her grandmother's company for several minutes. "Theo is more powerful than Mikel will ever be and yet you aren't praising him for his genetic potential. You're racist."
Elaine shot her granddaughter a tired look.
"Noelle, honey, why don't you go play upstairs with the other children?" she sighed. "You can all talk about how horrible I am while I get your brother a snack. Ironman will bring something up for you guys too."
"Bitch. You only care about him and Saturnia, your precious favourites," Noelle muttered under her breath as she walked past her grandmother. “They're not the ones who will own all your stuff when you finally die."
"What?"
Elaine glared at her granddaughter, assuming correctly that all of the girl's murmuring was directed at her.
Tumblr media
"Nothing, god. I'm going upstairs you stupid cow."
Tumblr media
"Noelle, I think we should probably just go play cards or something. Elaine looked kinda mad."
Elaina fidgeted nervously as Noelle continued belting out a song on the karaoke machine. Elaine hadn't forbidden them from using the machine, but the kids assumed that she'd be angry all the same.
Tumblr media
"I'm not done," Noelle insisted. "I'm having fun in this dump while I'm stuck here. I don't care what Elaine or my mom wants. I'm only stuck here because my mom wants 'alone time' with my dumb stepmom and school wouldn't keep us over the weekend. At least your parents want you guys around here."
Juliet beamed, finally having an in with the popular girl.
"My mom hates me," she said proudly. "She wishes that she could ship me off to school, but Dad won't let her. So we're the same, kinda."
Noelle blinked slowly, taking this information in. Her face didn't change at all, but her eyes stared at the girl, sizing her up.
"Hmm, you know what's more fun than karaoke?"
Tumblr media
"Chess?"
"Darts?"
Noelle smiled, ignoring both girls' suggestions.
"Come on, we'll have some real fun tonight. Let's go hang out in the basement."
Tumblr media
"I don't think we should be down here," Nick said worriedly, looking at their surroundings in fear.
No one was supposed to go in the basement. Elaine had forbidden it long ago. Only terrible, dangerous things happened down there. None of the kids could even imagine the horrors that dwelt there despite having vivid imaginations. The basement was a dark place with interdimensional portals leading to even darker places and only the demonic beings in their family were qualified to step foot there. Why did Noelle want to go there? No sane person should.
"Relax," Noelle laughed. "I know what I'm doing. It's the only place where I can call her. Her parents took away her phone for an…incident at school."
Those words were hardly reassuring to the group of children, but none of them spoke out against whatever Noelle had planned.
"Here, hold this," she said, shoving a candle from behind the stairs into Juliet's hands. "I left some here last time."
Tumblr media
With a snap of her fingers, the candle wick burst into a brilliant flame and Juliet tried not to gasp in shock. Behind her, Elaina and Nick were already starting to tremble. What dark magic was about to erupt from the shadows of this horrible place?
Noelle bent down near the remains of a magic circle and removed one of her mother's lipstick tubes from her pocket, dragging it along the stone, reigniting the magic within it.
All of the kids held their breath, hoping against hope that they would survive this supernatural encounter. Would it be a blood thirsty vampire that appeared? Maybe a violent werewolf? Could it be the same monstrous demons who had come for Roman and Theo in the past?
Noelle cleared her throat and the other children braced themselves for the dark Latin incantations they would surely hear.
"Hey, Destiny! I'm bored and stuck in stupid Arkhelios. Come hang out with me and my lame…cousins? I don't know what they are, but I'm stuck with them."
All the children stared at the glowing circle in confusion. This wasn't what they'd been expecting. Where was the blood or the Latin chanting? Things never looked like this in the movies.
"Is she calling out to her destiny like a Ouija board or tarot cards?" Elaina whispered. "Is this a fortune telling spell? Can it tell the future?"
Beside her, Juliet shook her head, utterly baffled at how this night was turning out. She'd gone from wanting to impress Noelle to fearing for her life. Would her parents find her body? Would they be mad at her for dying before they did? Juliet prayed that her death would at least be quick.
"Ugh, Arkhelios? It's so dry there and it smells like demons. Can't you meet me in Crystal Cove? My mom's out drinking with their stupid brother again and Dad is going to find out if I keep breaking the house sigils to leave."
The children's fear slowly turned to awe as they realized that they weren't actually about to die or have their fatal fortunes read.
"So walk down the road and teleport from there," Noelle groaned. "It's not hard, you're not bound to it like a demon. Your parents are too lame to notice anyway and if they do, blame Davis."
A groan came from the the circle and then a grudging sigh.
"Fine. But you're buying lunch this week."
After almost three minutes had passed, the circle began to shimmer and a teenage girl with long black hair appeared before their eyes. Noelle looked happy to see this girl, while the other children just stared, their eyes as big as saucers.
Tumblr media
"Hey guys, this is my friend Destiny," Noelle informed the shocked children. "She's in an older class, but she goes to my school. She's really powerful, so don't piss her off."
"Noelle!"
Noelle shrugged, ignoring her friend's outburst as if she were the older girl.
"Well you are. They don't need a novel about you, they only need to know that you're cool. Much cooler than them."  Her eyes gleamed with teenage rebellion. "Let's steal Grandma's wine and hang out at the pool! She's such an alcoholic that she won't notice some bottles missing."
Tumblr media
Juliet stared at the girl she had hoped to impress in astonishment. She'd always known that Lucy was an unpredictable loose cannon, and apparently some of that attitude had transferred to her daughter. Did Noelle frequently steal from her grandmother or was this just an idea to impress her older friend?
Destiny snapped her fingers and in an instant, a bottle of red wine appeared in her hands.
"Piece of cake," she boasted. "Easier than my mom's wine rack and they keep that thing well stocked."
"I…I don't think I'm thirsty," Juliet stammered. Beside her, Nick and Elaina nodded solemnly. Their parents would kill them if they caught the kids drinking with a teenager who came from a magic circle in their creepy basement.
"Babies," Noelle muttered, taking a swig from the bottle and passing it back to her friend.
"Lay off them, they're just kids," Destiny laughed. "Their parents actually care where they are, unlike yours."
"Right, just like Death himself wouldn’t ground you if he knew where you were?” Noelle teased. “You’re like a demi-god, aren’t you? Go have fun.”
“Not really and you know that,” Destiny replied, ignoring the quizzical looks from the other children. “I’m much closer to your powers than I am my parents’. Don’t start with the demi-god thing or I’ll have lines of people lining up at the school asking me to sign things and heal people. There’s no way I’m going through that again.”
Tumblr media
“So what’s it like having gods for parents?” Elaina asked, looking at the night sky.
The group had retired outside to drink and stargaze, which had seemed less nerve wracking than anything else Noelle had suggested so the other children had quickly agreed to it. Noelle seemed to be smiling and relaxed, which put Juliet at ease. Noelle was probably settled in for the night and didn’t have more plans that would get them in trouble.
“Kinda fun some days,” Destiny replied, staring at the stars intently. “Less fun other days. A lot of people have an idea of who you’re supposed to be and don’t want to let you be yourself.”
Juliet nodded beside her, feeling a new sense of camaraderie with the teen.
“I get that completely. Lots of people have plans about what I should be too.”
“Me too.”
Noelle’s whispered reply had been barely audible, but Juliet had heard it all the same. Her heart twinged at the tone of it and the hidden sorrow the girl surely felt spilled out in those words. Underneath the callous attitude, it was beginning to look like Noelle had a vulnerable side, one that had been wounded long past healing. Maybe it was because of the alcohol or just the company, but deep down, Juliet could see the girl Noelle wanted to be. Call it supernatural intuition or just being a good judge of character, but Juliet could see the hidden Noelle screaming to be seen and helped. Clearly Lucy’s parenting left a lot to be desired, and no one knew who Noelle’s other parent could be.
Tumblr media
“There’s two moons out tonight!” Elaina gasped, pointing at the sky. “Is that even possible?”
Tumblr media
“Anything is possible,” Destiny laughed. “Don’t you believe in other universes? Other planes of existence besides our own? Who’s to say that that’s not a natural phenomenon of the barriers between the demonic void and here? Maybe it’s the afterlife accepting lost wayward souls. You never know.”
“Do you know?” Elaina demanded. “What is it?”
“A sign that I have to go back home now. Dad is probably pissed off that I left.”
“What? Your dad uses a second moon to get your attention? Why not just call?”
Destiny just laughed and started gathering her things.
“I never said that he did. Just keep an open mind about things and maybe one day you’ll know what it means. Anyway, it’s been fun. Noelle, I was serious about buying lunch this week.”
“Yeah, yeah, I’ll get some money from my mom,” Noelle replied. “See you then.”
Tumblr media
As the mysterious girl faded from view, Juliet looked up at the sky and the mysterious moons. Was it really an overlap of dimensions or just something Destiny had made up? One day when her parents eventually died, would she be able to see them cross into the afterlife in the sky above her? Would they be able to tell her that they were okay and not to worry about never seeing them again? It was a pleasant thought at least which she hoped was true.
“Noelle! Why am I missing two wine bottles? I’m calling your mother about this!”
Noelle laughed as her grandmother continued shouting at her from the window.
“Go ahead!” she called out. “She doesn't care! Mom lets me do whatever I want.”

It feels like you're allowed to like literally any Disney villain but Hans. Like... if you enjoy Hans or relate to him in some way, you're a bad person. Very sad, especially since Disney intentionally or unintentionally encourages this by giving Hans no merch and making him a punching bag on his rare appearances.
The Frozen musical is the only thing that takes him seriously as a character. I'd die to hear Santino Fontana sing Hans' songs from the musical.
Meanwhile Agnarr and Iduna, who were terrible parents for a decade resulting in Elsa's anxiety and self-esteem issues, and Anna's attachment issues, are given a full romeo+juliet backstory and all their negative traits and actions handwaved away as being Runeard's fault. Frozen 2 is an Agduna apologism tour featuring a Hate on Hans parade and some cute mascots.

The longest-running musical in history, "Fantasy Sonata," has lost its lyricist, director, and co-writer, Tom Jones, who passed away at the age of 95.
Jones, known for his collaboration with Dan Shaheen on "Fantasy Wand" since the 1980s, reportedly died of cancer at his home in Connecticut. Jones collaborated with composer Harvey Schmidt to create "The Fantasticks," as well as Broadway productions like "110 in the Shade" and "I Do!," earning him a spot in the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1998.
"The Fantasticks," adapted from a play by Edmond Rostand, features a simple setup of a platform, curtain, and wooden box. The story is a homage to "Romeo and Juliet," involving young men and women secretly brought together by their fathers and an array of peculiar characters. The play boasts a large cast, from the opening actors in 1960, Jerry Orbach and Rita Gardner, to stars like Ricardo Montalban, Kristin Chenoweth, and even Santino Fontana from "Frozen." The production was honored with a Tony Award for Outstanding Theatre in 1991.
Jones once stated, "So many people came, yet this thing remained the same—platform, wooden box, paper moon. We came to do our little thing and then departed." The play graced the Sullivan Street Playhouse in Greenwich Village with its presence for nearly 42 years, culminating in 17,162 performances before closing in 2002. It served as both a victim of the aftermath of 9/11 and a casualty of the new avant-garde sentiment in the post-terrorism era.
In 1963, Jones and Schmidt collaborated on the Broadway production "110 in the Shade," garnering Tony Award nominations for Best Composer and Best Lyricist. In 1967, their collaborative work "I Do!" also earned them Tony Award nominations. Jones is survived by his two sons, Michael and Sam. Broadway veteran Danny Bernstein praised him on Facebook, saying, "What a good person he was. I really admired him

Michael Dorsey, a New York actor who can’t get a job because he’s so difficult, still finds success after retooling himself as a Southern lady named Dorothy Michaels. But it’s no longer a bad soap opera that Dorothy stars in; naturally, it’s a bad musical comedy.
How bad? “Juliet’s Curse” is a sequel to “Romeo and Juliet” in which the resuscitated heroine falls for Romeo’s ripped brother, Craig.
So instead of camera angles and lechers with comb-overs, this is a world of Fosse hands and himbos. Hired to play Juliet’s nurse, Dorothy (Santino Fontana) quickly clocks the show’s ludicrousness and, undermining the toxic director, Ron Carlisle (Reg Rogers), sets out to revamp it. In the process, Michael (also Mr. Fontana, obviously) falls for Julie (Lilli Cooper), who plays Juliet, even as dim Max Van Horn (John Behlmann), who plays Craig, falls for Dorothy.

i just came across your blog from your amazing art taste. how did you come to get into such classical striking styles? from your love of donna tartt i assume it carried through to other art forms. what are some of your favourite artists or themes (could be visual, musical, literary etc)?
first of all, thank you from the bottom of my heart because this ask really made my day, you’re a sweetheart.
actually, i think if i have to track down a literary origin point for my art taste (even if it’s not entirely true it all originated in that specific way, it’s truer to state i was born with it, i would roam around the louvre or versailles at six and already feel so in awe and in my element, or i would arrive in rome at nine and feel home), but the real turning point of my artistic taste was the art for art’s sake movement, walter pater and oscar wilde. only ten years later i discovered donna tartt, and i had already graduated from my classics high school and in general studied the classics for ten years - yes, donna tartt added a great deal of beauty in my life, but i was already completely part of that world, so to speak.
it’s so difficult to list all the artists, and styles, and in general all the beauty that daily inspires my life, the right answer would be, “everything that strikes me within and that i find beautiful”, and that can be literally anything, but i can try, for art’s sake :)

“Tootsie” show #792
Tumblr media
How refreshing that my first show of my NYC 2019 trip was Tootsie. Yes, the 1982 film of the same name has been given the musical treatment. To give where credit is due, I am happy to report that, in a rare instance, the Tony voters completely nailed what this show is deserving of winning; Robert Horn’s book is impeccably written, astute in its approach of 2019 sensitivities of women speaking out, and men taking and domineering the professional and artistic worlds. Mr. Horn’s book pairs effectively well with David Yazbek’s lyrics in checking the boxes by addressing female empowerment, consent, and appropriateness between men and women. Further, Santino Fontana is absolutely divine in this Tony-winning performance; he takes the audience on a journey of incredible timing, physicality, inflection, and vocal calisthenics. It cannot be easy delivering this role with a female-falsetto in scene and song while being equal parts believable as man and woman. Harping more on the score and book, Mr. Yazbek and Mr. Horn have provided Mr. Fontana lyrics and dialogue that push the plot and give his “I Want” songs ample time to develop and move. If not for the rest of the fabulous performances, these two Tony-winning efforts would be reason enough to put on your best heels and leap on over to the Marquis Theatre to check out Tootise. But wait, there’s plenty more!
Tumblr media

Vocally, Mr. Fontana’s opening solo “Whaddya Do” kicks off his supreme bari-tenor in strong fashion, assuring the audience his sturdy leading man chops are here to stay. However, more than just an engaging singer, Mr. Fontana’s comedic timing and ability to play many of director Scott Ellis’ bits to their full extent, are done so without mugging or losing steam. Mr. Fontana’s back-and-forth from struggling actor who creates a backstory for a tomato, Michael Dorsey, to the sturdy, excellent-listener, leading actress, Dorothy Michaels, doesn’t drone on nor take audiences out of reality. When the costume changes happen, whether on, off, or below stage, they are quick and dazzling each time. It wouldn’t be a complete performance for Mr. Fontana without his Act One triumph, “Unstoppable,” and Act Two lament, “Talk to Me Dorothy,” to put a bow on this wonderful acting-singing-moving turn.
Tumblr media
(Seated: Santino Fontana (Michael/Dorothy), Standing: Lilli Cooper (Julie); Photo credit: Matthew Murphy)
Supported by a stellar supporting cast and ensemble, Lilli Cooper is a terrific Julie, an actress playing Juliet opposite Dorothy Michael’s Nurse, as part of the revived Romeo and Juliet, helmed for Broadway by zany, sexist, egotistical director, Ron Carlisle. Ms. Cooper is flawless in her vocal prowess, especially in the Act Two, “Gone, Gone, Gone,” a song which should be bopping on Top 40 radio (that’s meant as a compliment), and showcases a vocal range and riffed decoration that is one of Mr. Yazbek’s more memorable tunes. Another win for Mr. Yazbek’s lyrics in her songs are allowing her “I Had” songs time to flesh out and let the audience in on Julie’s past and how she’s feeling in the present. Ms. Cooper’s romantic connection opposite Mr. Fontana’s differing characters is one that is soothing and wholesome to follow, a logical relationship of trust and vulnerability that has its major road block approach at a most inopportune time, hence the comedy. Andy Grotelueschen, playing Michael’s bartender/waiter/hopeful playwright roommate, Jeff, is outstanding in his performance, re-writing what it means to deliver a punchline and/or set up a joke to its peak comedic worth. His true musical time to shine is not wasted in “Jeff Sums it Up.”
Tumblr media
(Sarah Stiles (Sandy) and Andy Grotelueschen (Jeff); Photo credit: Matthew Murphy)
Sarah Stiles is a scene-stealing gift to the musical stage as Sandy, the neurotic, depressed, and a slew of other reasons to see a therapist, ex-girlfriend of Michael. Sandy is a hardworking actress who isn’t working, and her neuroses are on full display in her big-voiced patter “What’s Gonna Happen” and its several reprises. Ms. Stiles has a gift for the pregnant pause, knowing how long a bit should last, and never reaches or begs the audience to laugh. John Behlmann delivers a featured standout performance as Max Van Horn, the clueless, dunce, but oh-so-hot leading actor in the Romeo and Juliet, aptly named Juliet’s Curse, show within the show. Mr. Behlmann’s commitment and ability to sustain the dumbness of Max is a feat of astonishing proportion, never coming across as annoying or a burden to the progress of his scenes. Mr. Behlmann’s beautiful voice is on great display in “This Thing,” a hilarious, big-voiced ditty where Max pronounces his love for an unsuspecting cast member. Reg Rogers delivers a wonderfully devilish turn as aforementioned putz director, Ron. His physicality and dripping delivery of the most sarcastic and pompous of lines are excellent throughout the musical. In total, Mr. Horn’s book and Mr. Yazbek’s score are champions at giving every role just enough scene and song to have the support and investment needed in what stakes they have in the show.
Tumblr media
(L to R: Julie Halston (Rita), James Moye (Ensemble), Santino Fontana (Michael/Dorothy), Lilli Cooper (Julie), John Behlmann (Max); Photo credit: Matthew Murphy)
David Rockwell’s scenic design does the job needed to portray “big Broadway musical” while still giving intimacy to Michael and Jeff’s apartment scenes, with appropriate décor and ratty furniture. William Ivey Long’s costumes are on par with the big, bright, buoyancy of the show, helping the leads pop with character and color; he even throws in a few joke garbs along the way which have made their viral way into the 2000s. Denis Jones’ choreography is appropriate throughout the production, a nice balance of simple with some clever turns, and even a few nods to modern moves that this generation is certainly versed in. And bringing it together is a fantastic helming by Scott Ellis, who is no stranger to making a big musical work so well. Mr. Ellis’ style, pacing, and attention to the comedy matches exactly what the musical calls for, having just enough humor and heart injected into the body of the show, while also getting out of the way when appropriate and simply letting the lines and the actors do their work. A capital job, through and through, Tootsie is most certainly the musical for you!

“Jorah? Honey, are you okay?”
Jorah sighed heavily and wrapped his arms around his knees even tighter than they were before. If only he could stay like this forever and grieve in the time he needed. There was a downside to being the future leader of the Durants. Well, actually there seemed to be more downsides than anything else lately. All he did was work and sacrifice and lose, and for what? A house that needed repairs and wasn’t anywhere near as glamorous as the Helios or Bellamy house? To make his older sister feel better that she’d abandoned her family responsibilities to go live in a castle in a tropical paradise? He needed a win in any aspect of his life so badly, surely even his father or grandmother could see it. If they did though, they certainly didn’t have any solutions to offer him.
“Jorah? We can cancel for today if you need to. Ulyssa will understand if you talk to her.”
Jorah sighed again, and reluctantly moved to stand. His devoted husband Valerian was watching him worriedly. The last thing he wanted to do was make Valerian worry.
Tumblr media
“No, I’m fine,” Jorah lied, reaching for his husband’s hand. “Ulyssa has been waiting for this day for a long time. It’s my duty to keep this show going. Grandma will have my head if I don’t. Emilia keeps telling her ‘the show must go on’ when talking about her own kids and now Grandma has ‘expectations’.”
“She doesn’t expect you to make yourself suffer,” Valerian insisted, holding Jorah’s hands firmly. “Think about it, okay? We can always send Ulyssa home.”
Tumblr media
Unfortunately for Jorah, Ulyssa had learned to be punctual with all of her training to join Maura’s family. She and her wife arrived precisely at eleven.
It felt weird to have to bow to his older sister, but Jorah did it anyway. No use ruffling any feathers when a foreign princess was also in the room.
“Your Highness,” Jorah said, bowing to his sister in law. “Ulyssa.”
“Come here, you idiot,” Ulyssa beamed, wrapping her arms around her little brother in a very informal manner. “I missed you. I’m sorry my honeymoon was so long, and then things with Theo dragging it out even longer. How are you?”
“Great,” Jorah lied. He gave her a weak smile. “You know me, reliable dull Jorah.”
Tumblr media
“Rose!”
Ulyssa turned her attention from her brother to the little girl that was rushing towards her. Rose had been feeling under the weather, so her grandmother kept her home from school for the day. She immediately perked up seeing Ulyssa stop by.
Emilia promised that she was going to move back home with her grandkids any day now, but the Durants didn’t believe her. She had been going to move for months now, and nothing had come of it. Cain and Rose were permanent fixtures in the Durant household, and Emilia and Yvette spent everyday living their best senior lives together. At this point, not even Pia expected her mother to return to the Rivales home.
Tumblr media
“Okay, so it’s going to be simple,” Jorah began, sitting next to his sister on the couch. He could see how nervous she was. Her hands were noticeably shaking, which wasn’t like her at all. “They’re going to come in as a group, usually lead by Roman, but it could be Abe if his work schedule allows. It absolutely won’t be Lucy.”
“Good. That helps,” Ulyssa said, breathing a small sigh of relief. “I don’t know if I can handle her hostility on top of everything else.”
Tumblr media
“It’s okay to be nervous,” Jorah reassured his sister. “Noelle is a good kid and very friendly. You don’t have to introduce yourself as her mother. Just say hi, and she’ll probably be thrilled to talk to a new person.”
Ulyssa nodded, mentally taking notes. She was going to meet her daughter for the first time while knowing that she was her mother. Noelle, Roman’s twins and Juliet Fontana all still stopped by to be babysat and socialized. It was a group that Jorah found gratifying to look after, even if there wasn’t an official Durant child around to join them. Theo, Keiki, Lauren, Cain and Rose often joined the group after school, but in the afternoon, it was only the toddlers.
It was the perfect setup to introduce Ulyssa to her daughter. There were other kids around to not make Noelle nervous about strangers, and it would give Ulyssa a reasonable excuse to hang around the toddlers if she did want to spend more time with her daughter.
Tumblr media
“Are you ready for this?” Maura asked worriedly. “We can always leave and do this another time. You don’t have to meet her at all if you don’t want to.”
The two of them had decided to strategize in Ulyssa’s room before Roman arrived. Jorah had seemed more stressed than usual, and it was making Ulyssa even tenser.
“No, I have to at least meet her,” Ulyssa replied. “I’ll regret it if I don’t. I just don’t know how to judge how involved I want to be in her life. Am I a bad person if I don’t try to get visitation rights? Could I live with myself if she grows up and wonders where I’ve been all of her life? What about our future kids? Do they need to know about their half-sister in another country? What if the press finds out?”
“Breathe, just breathe,” Maura instructed, keeping her voice calm. “You’re panicking. You’ve never met this child, it’s a bit soon to be worrying about how our kids will one day feel about her. Take it one step at a time.”
“What do you think?” Ulyssa asked. “What would you do? What’s the right thing?” She took a deep breath as instructed, but it didn’t make any difference.
“My family’s not really the model family you’re aiming for,” Maura replied with a soft smile. “What I would do as the heir to a throne with an illegitimate daughter doesn’t really apply here.” She gestured to the formal portrait of her mother that adorned Ulyssa’s wall. “My grandmother was named after her own grandmother out of hatred and spite, then she turned around and gave my mother the same name for the same reason. There’s a history of fatal ‘accidents’ that occur rather frequently to people in line to the throne and I’m pretty sure my parents got married just to spite the queen, so whatever you decide, you’ll easily be a better person than most of my family.”
“Can you imagine if you had an illegitimate kid like your cousin?” Ulyssa laughed, significantly less stressed to think of the craziness in Maura’s family. “The amount of hand wringing in all of Pleasantview over a mother or fatherless heir is insane. Who cares? She’s the child of the queen, it doesn’t matter who her other parent is.”
“Hmm. Well, the laws of Pleasantview are quite different than ours. Some of their strongest monarchs have been bastard children who seize the throne through violence. I think I’d like to avoid that fate if at all possible. Leave Claudia’s problems with Pleasantview. I doubt Noelle will be staging a coup against us anytime in the future.”
Tumblr media
“You say the most reassuring things,” Ulyssa teased. “However, you clearly haven’t spent enough time with Lucy. Lucy has already firmly conquered the Rivales family, give her another decade and she might unleash Noelle on Twikkii Island.”
“Well, I guess we should stay on Noelle’s good side,” Maura replied, holding out her hand for her wife to hold. “For the good of the country that is. If her mother decides she doesn’t want to be a part of her life, Noelle will always have two benevolent and sympathetic women in Twikkii Island who wish her the best in all her endeavors. They might even grant her a scholarship to school if Lucy decides to ask. Just for the good of the country though. No official connections have to be made.”
“Right.”
Ulyssa smiled gratefully at her wife. She wasn’t sure how she would have gotten this far without her. Whatever happened when Noelle arrived, they would face it together.

Tootsie is Actually Really Good!
It needs some work but I had an absolute BLAST at this show
Tumblr media
Let’s get one thing first out of the way. This is a hideous playbill. That is the blandest and most generic playbill art design they could’ve chosen and for some reason they thought that was good choice. I said this right from the start but Tootsie’s art and marketing has been atrocious. What is that font?! It’s so ugly! Why is the digital marquee outside a mixture of this and occasionally that photo of Santino as Dorothy? They need a new marketing team.
The show itself though is pretty damn good.
The book is absolutely fantastic. Like I was so shocked by how good the book was. Huge kudos to Robert Horn for writing a really hilarious book that stayed true to the movie while reinventing it for a modern day stage adaptation. The best part about this musical is its book and it’s a gem. I can’t wait till more people see it so all of Max’s lines become quotable jokes that everyone uses because his character was hilarious.
Performances were solid all around, with special kudos to Andy Grotelueschen as Jeff and John Behlmann as Max. They both completely stole the show. Jeff (played by Bill Murray in the movie) has a small role, but Grotelueschen made him the best role. He has some of the best lines and the best jokes and one of the better songs. Max is a character created for the stage version and I loved him so much. I expected him to be annoying but he was actually one of the better parts of the show.
Sarah Stiles was absolutely amazing as Sandy, but I’ll talk about her a bit later because I have some problems with her character. But I wanted to mention how good she was because wow she was really fantastic.
The music itself is good. Like the instrumental bits. The lyrics weren’t memorable or that great but the instrumental backing was really lovely. The overture was spectacular, and it made me miss overtures a whole lot. This was really good music for classic musical theatre choreography and there was a whole lot of that. The dancing was really good and also very self-aware in how ridiculous musical theatre choreo can be sometimes.
That’s also what I really liked about Tootsie. It knew what it was and it knew what it was doing. This musical didn’t hold back on its themes and Michael Dorsey’s faults. It never tried to pull a “well what he’s doing isn’t that bad.” They were very frank in how Michael becoming Dorothy would harm individuals, yes, but also women in theatre. I also liked what they did with Julie (played by Lilli Cooper) in that she had a whole song talking about her career and her relationships with the end point being that she’s fine being single cause she loves her career. They were also very honest and out there about how creepy directors and be and how women just have to deal with it because otherwise they’ll never work again. Yes, it was all very baseline feminism and there were moments where you could definitely tell it was written by an all-male creative team but overall I liked what they were trying to say.
And this show was fun! It was so fun! It was funny and fun and I had an absolute blast watching it! Everyone was so good! The costumes were so pretty! The set was fun! The dancing was fun! There’s so much joy in this show and you can tell everyone on that stage is having a blast, especially Santino Fontana.
Of course Santino Fontana is very good. I’ll say that right off the bat. He’s hilarious and in good voice and really shines when he gets to be Dorothy. And how they did Dorothy was mostly successful. Fontana was at his best when he was Dorothy. As Michael, I will say a lot of the time he was Acting with a capital A. That might just be a choice, but it wasn’t a good one. I’ll also say that I wasn’t completely blown away by him either. Like I went into Tootsie with the mindset of “Oh okay Santino is probably gonna win the Tony this year” but after seeing this I think Damon Daunno in Oklahoma! gave the better leading actor in a musical performance. I wanted to see this show and think that Santino Fontana is an amazing actor and no one can play this role but him, but honestly I can list five actors off the top of my head who could do this role in their sleep and maybe even better. Gavin Creel. Lesli Odom Jr. Andy Karl (though one more Pretty Woman performance from him and he’s off the list). Jake Gyllenhaal. Ethan Slater. I could keep going. Easily.
And I was a bit disappointed by David Yazbeck’s score. Yes it was pretty, but that was it. There was nothing very wow about it. It was a very generic and safe score, and after The Band’s Visit I expect that same level of quality from him now. This was very much if he took the score from The Fully Monty and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and squished them together. Sarah Stiles’ song is very very very reminiscent of Model Behavior from the latter show. The ballads in the show weren’t very good either, and there were too many of them in Act Two. None of Michael’s emotional ballads really landed. They were kind of boring and inconsequential actually.
Speaking of Sarah Stiles, what happened to Sandy during Act Two? She’s missing for all but one scene basically and that scene is very much a “Well we gotta end her character’s storyline some way!” and it felt very rushed and out of nowhere. Same with Michael’s decision to become Dorothy in the first place. One scene we seeing him running around New York and the next he’s in the audition as Dorothy. I wish there was something more there to indicate what he’s about to do.
Really, this musical depends on you knowing the plot of the movie. I happen to love the movie so I knew what to expect, but I feel like if I haven’t seen the movie I might have been a bit confused. That’s also where my biggest problem comes in, which is also the biggest departure from the film.
Instead of becoming a soap opera star, Dorothy gets the role in this new Broadway musical (Juliet’s Curse) and it’s a bad musical so she changes the whole thing, so much so that they rename the show and do everything she wants. All while in tech. I get that this is theatre and I should suspend my disbelief, but my writer brain lost it at the thought of an actor being so high and mighty that they literally change the entire show while in tech - including costumes and set design. I don’t care how bad your show is or how good of an actor you are - you’re not the creative team! You’re the cast! You don’t get to do these things! All of it really reminded me of the “not a lab rat” thing that happened a while ago and it actually made me really mad.
Likewise, the whole point of Tootsie is that Dorothy Michaels becomes super famous really fast. That very obviously can’t happen if you’re in previews for a Broadway show. You’re not going to propel to superstardom within an instant, but I felt that the show assumes we know that Dorothy becomes famous because we know that’s what happens in the movie. This show is really dependent on you the audience filling in the blanks with your film knowledge, so really that makes it hard for this show to stand on its own two feet sometimes. Like I said, I loved this musical. But I also love the movie so I was able to get everything that wasn’t there and had a good time.
Also, Santino Fontana and Lilli Cooper have no romantic chemistry. Like none. I loved the friendship between Dorothy and Julie. But there was nothing else there. That can’t be fixed, so I don’t know what they can do about that.
Overall, even though it seems like I shit on an important aspect of this musical, I really really enjoyed it. Like I said, the book and the supporting performances and the very self-aware of how ridiculous it all was aspect of Tootsie made it a really really solid musical. I’d see it again in a heartbeat.
**side edit: I need to add that while the marketing team has been promoting the show the wrong way and that merch bag is really inexcusable, the show itself isn’t transphobic. They actually address the situation in a “Michael, what you’re doing is going to harm others” way. The line on the merch bag I believe is directly from the movie and was the only line in the show that really made me wince. In context it makes sense, but still.

It’s the period of adoration indeed as we observe Valentine’s Day on Monday. All through this pandemic, we figured out how friendly connections are essential to help our passionate wellbeing and prosperity. Despite the fact that we are cooped up in our homes as a result of the isolations, nothing elevates the spirits more than hearing from those we love and realizing the amount they’re rooting for and asking us while we go through these unsure times. Getting and giving adoration move us along, particularly during the hardest of days. Obviously, it’s not just heartfelt love that I’m alluding to here, yet love for oneself, for one’s loved ones also. All things considered, wouldn’t you say it’s simply right to commend love consistently, past Valentine’s Day?
One spot that is committed to letting its occupants and visitors experience love 365 days a year is Suntrust Properties Inc’s. Verona. Named after one of the most heartfelt urban communities in Italy that is popular for being the setting of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” this private advancement is viewed as the “adoration capital” of all Suntrust Properties projects. Situated in Brgy. Hoyo, Silang, Cavite, Verona lies just along the Tagaytay-Sta. Rosa National Road. A similarity of the Fontana di Venere welcomes you as you pass through the excellent curved entry, in what is by all accounts a sign that you’re in for a fantastic and eccentric time at this enchanting property with your friends and family close behind.

New York Films Head to Park City for Sundance Film Festival
Nineteen films and two pilots that participated in the New York State Film Tax Credit Program will be screened next month at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Since 1985, hundreds of films launched at Sundance—one of the world’s largest film festivals—have gained critical recognition, received commercial distribution and reached global audiences eager for fresh perspectives and new voices.   Films that shoot or do post-production work in New York have traditionally been well-represented at Sundance, set for Jan. 18-28 in Park City, Utah. In addition to their Sundance recognition, this year’s crop of New York films also had an impressive economic impact while they were in production and post production, spending an estimated $38 million in New York and creating an estimated 2,448 hires.
Tumblr media
New York’s incentive program, designed to strengthen the state’s film production and post-production industries, is one of the main reasons filmmakers choose to film here.   Houston King, producer of Hearts Beat Loud, which will premiere at Sundance, offered an example. "From the inception of Hearts Beat Loud, we wanted to highlight one of our favorite NYC neighborhoods - Red Hook, Brooklyn.  Without New York State’s incentive we very likely would have been forced to shoot the film in another state and changed the location of our story,” King said. “The incentive was key to giving our investors comfort that shooting in NYC was the right thing for their investment and the film."
