Marco Reus on injuries, his return, the World Cup and much more
He's a world footballing star, an affable man off the pitch and a deadly exponent of the beautiful game on it. After 259 days out through the latest of his major injuries, Marco Reus has returned to action as if he was never away.
In the first of a two-part exclusive interview with bundesliga.com, Borussia Dortmund's German superstar talks injuries, comebacks, friends and the World Cup.
bundesliga.com: How are you feeling at the moment?
Marco Reus: “Relaxed. I'm pleased that I'm able to help the team and that I'm out on the pitch again. I’m happy that I can enjoy my football again.”
bundesliga.com: How is it going for you at the moment in a sporting sense?
Reus: “As I said, I don’t measure myself on goals alone but also the way that I play – that I am making a difference in games, am involved in good passages of play. That is an important factor for me and I know that there is room for improvement there. Particularly in terms of minutes played because it's always difficult to play 90 minutes after such a long break with injury. I can deal with this though – it's not a problem. It gets better every week though as I get fitter and fitter. I'm very pleased.”
bundesliga.com: Can you remember the announcer shouting your name as you walked out to make your return against Hamburg?
Reus: “I wasn't aware of that, unfortunately. I saw a video of it afterwards. They did very well. My friends had a small heart attack that I had been injured during the warm up. Of course it's very nice to have those moments if you're making a return from a long-term injury. It’s a great feeling to be welcomed like that. For me personally it was more important that we won the match that day.”
bundesliga.com: How difficult is it to pace yourself in your comeback?
Reus: “It's a balancing act, certainly. I regularly have conversations with the manager about how to go about this. You have to be careful of course that there aren't any follow up injuries because the muscles behave slightly differently. I've played a lot of games in recent weeks so I just need to make sure I recover well and train well, too. I'm not that concerned at the moment considering how things are going. But it's important to be aware, yes.”
bundesliga.com: You once said you would trade all your money for health. Do you stand by that?
Reus: “To be honest, it wasn’t meant completely sincerely. When you pick up a serious injury as a footballer – and I mean long term injuries where you are out for six, seven, eight months or more, not just a three or four week hamstring tears – then that's simply the case. You want to play the sport that you have been playing for years and have enjoyed for years. It can be incredibly difficult to come to terms with the fact that you'll not be able to do that for six, seven, eight months. But injuries are part of football, you have to adjust and learn what the repercussions are. Your body changes as a result of this period. You see other perspectives and that has certainly shaped me as a person. I'm happy to be back now.”
bundesliga.com: Have the set backs shaped your personality?
Reus: “Yes. Not just to a small extent, but in a big way. When you're injured for such a long time, you reflect on what life has to offer as a whole. I know that it's not just football. There are more important issues out there. Particularly because you can only play until you are 35-years old and then you enter a new chapter of your life. I think it's very important that you don't start thinking about your life after football when you are 33 or 34. There are many more amazing things in this world and it's important to think about these things before you retire. It's difficult for every single player in my opinion because there is such a big hole to fill after you retire. The level of fame is no longer there and people are much less interested in you. That's actually a good thing because it allows you to do those things that you perhaps were not able to before. I think it's important to be thinking about your personal life and your family not just when you've retired but also during your career. Also to do those things that you want and can do now.”
bundesliga.com: How happy are you to be playing with Mario Götze and André Schürrle again? Things are going well, right?
Marco Reus: “It's going in the right direction. All three of us are very pleased that we're able to play on the same pitch again after such a long time. That's very important for us and for the team. They're both great guys and they show that out on the pitch too. I hope and believe that we'll keep improving in the coming weeks so that we can continue to help the team.”
bundesliga.com: Julian Weigl explained that you helped him over the summer with his injury?
Reus: “Definitely. When he first came to Dortmund we shared a room during the training camp. We got on very well from day one and still do now. His injury back then against Augsburg was very tough because it came in an important period of our season. He missed out on the DFB Cup final and winning the cup was in many ways in his honour. But I’m sure that if I told him that, he would say that it doesn’t make any difference to him and that he just wanted to be a part of it. So it was a real shame, and then a short time later I got injured too. But we spoke very regularly and met up because we're good friends. There was a period where we were both injured and so we met up in the evenings to play PlayStation, to talk and just to have some positive thoughts.”
bundesliga.com: How big is your desire to be a part of the World Cup squad this summer?
Reus: “Huge. I'll look forward to it when we get there. My excitement will grow more and more as we get closer and start playing international games. We will see what decisions the head coach makes. I'm very relaxed though. I will not miss out through injury.”
bundesliga.com: What is Germany coach Joachim Löw saying at the moment?
Reus: “We stay in regular contact of course, particularly because of my injury. We message achother and speak on the phone to discuss my progress and other matters. We're in close contact.”
bundesliga.com: What are your sporting aims for the coming months?
Reus: “That we achieve the goals we've set ourselves as a club. That we get direct qualification for the Champions League and get to the final of the Europa League. Those are our aims and we have the quality to achieve them. We know we'll have to work even harder but the stronger our opponents are, the better we will perform. And then hopefully the World Cup.”

i'm about 20lbs overweight and normally it doesn't bother me and i am trying to lose weight at the moment but recently i've been getting thoughts that my weight makes me unloveable and ugly. i tend to hide under baggy clothes anyway, and one of my irl friends is really skinny so every time i see her i feel bad. i've even had a few people making comments at me in the street. some positivity from julian weigl would be nice please
Julian wants you to know that he empathizes with your situation. It’s so hard to feel like your body isn’t enough, to feel betrayed by it. But remember to be kind to it, too. This is the one body you’ve got, anon. Be grateful to it. Be grateful for the muscles that let you hug your friends and family, be grateful for your lungs filling with air, be grateful for your beating heart and the ribs that protect it.
As far as weight goes, Julian wants to offer you a quote. Everyone has a blind spot in the shape of themselves. What he takes from that quote is that when we look in a mirror, something happens to convert that mirror into a funhouse mirror, zooming in only on the parts of ourselves that we like least. So he’d like you to remember that what you see in the mirror isn’t what everyone else sees. So whatever your brain tells you, you are not unlovable and ugly, regardless of the number on the scale.
He also wants to tell you that weight and health can be related, but they can also not be related. He doesn’t know what your situation is, but he’d gently like to suggest that you focus on your health and what your body can do and what you’d like for it to be able to do. If you’re exercising and trying to get stronger and healthier, that’s great. He’d suggest maybe recruiting a friend to go with you so you can have more fun. Please don’t try to restrict your diet too much- he’d like to kindly remind you that carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are all essential, so cutting out too much will only hurt you.
He’s so sorry that you’ve had to deal with people in the street making comments about you. That is absolutely not okay. He knows it’s incredibly hard, but he’d like to ask you to try to separate your conception of yourself from other people’s.
You have all of Julian’s support, and he hopes you can feel a little bit better about yourself as time goes forward. He wants you to know that it might not be the same every day, that even if you’ve been feeling amazing all week, you might wake up one day and feel awful, and he wants you to know that that doesn’t mean that you haven’t made any progress in learning to love yourself and accept yourself.
Lastly, he’d like to offer you one challenge. Get up and go look in the mirror, anon. Point out three genuinely nice things about your appearance. If you don’t feel the compliments are genuine, keep going until you get three genuine ones. He suggests doing this every day, maybe while you’re brushing your teeth. He guarantees that there are lots of nice things about your appearance, you just have to get past that funhouse mirror effect and train your eyes to see them.

do you see weigl off to psg in the future? they need a dm and tuchel loves weigl and brought the best out of him in bvb..
Honestly, I’ve heard so many times that Julian Weigl was actually part of the #TuchelOut crowd that I almost kind of believe it. But I do still have my own guess about how things were at the end, based on how I observed things in the final months/weeks rather than based on the conflicting info we got from “insiders”. Obviously I’m not going to assume that my guess is the right answer, it’s just my own guess, but I’m also not going to assume that these insiders have the truth because so much of their info has been proven false at this point.
I think in Weigl’s case, we can pick up some hints from the way he denied the rumours. When asked about PSG, he just said he can understand why people would expect him to go to PSG because he worked well with Tuchel but he won’t leave BVB this summer. If there had been no contact at all, the first thing any player would usually say is “PSG never even contacted me” and not “I can see why you would think that”. On Tuchel’s end, when he arrived at PSG, he was asked in his first official interview if he would sign his “protégé” Julian Weigl. He gave no conclusive answer, nor did he take issue with this description of Weigl. The interview came across as a fairly controlled PR situation so I doubt this reporter just took a guess out of the blue. From this, I think it’s quite likely that Tuchel/PSG at least contacted Julian.
On the other hand, as much as we can speculate about pull factors for joining PSG, we also need to consider pull factors for staying at BVB. Germany is his home country, and his family and friends are all there. He has regular playing time at a team that plays CL football, he plays in a stronger domestic league, he gets on well with his teammates, and the atmosphere of the locker room suits his down to earth personality. It’s hard to guess how much he wants a wage increase, or how ambitious he is to take a bigger step, or how badly he wants to try something new. Every player wants those things to some degree, Julian included, but it has to be measured against what he already has at BVB.
Right now, I do think BVB is a fairly attractive place. If this season had begun the same way as the whole shitshow we saw last season, I might feel a stronger risk of losing him, especially since he lost his NT spot. But at this moment, BVB looks more competitive and he’s also playing somewhat better football himself. So my guess is that he’ll stay, but it’s really just based on my guess about how much he cares about which things.

Borussia Dortmund team work to overcome bomb attack
After having their team bus hit with three explosions on Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund players are still overcoming the shock along with the loss of their defender Marc Bartra, who is in the hospital with a fractured wrist. It can be hard enough sometimes to keep your mind on the game, but this experience would test anyone. The team has rallied around each other along with their fans as they have to ready themselves to hit the field again on Saturday when Eintracht Frankfurt visits in the Bundesliga. "It comes in waves. Today feels the worst," Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel said Thursday. "We have to find a way to deal with it. But we don't know yet how that's supposed to happen." Dortmund midfielder Nuri Sahin made it clear that his thoughts were far from the field in the rescheduled Champions League quarterfinal match against Monaco on Wednesday - a game Dortmund lost 3-2 after an uncharacteristically hesitant start. "Until I was on the pitch in the second half, I didn't think about football, to be honest. Because last night I didn't realize what happened, and when I was at home and my wife and my son were waiting in front of the door, there I felt how lucky we were," the visibly shaken Sahin told former Norway international Jan Aage Fjortoft, now a journalist. "I know football is very important. We love football. We suffer with football. We love football. I know we earn a lot of money, we have a privileged life, but we are human beings. There's so much more than football in this world. Last night we felt it." Dortmund defender Marc Bartra was hit by shrapnel as three explosions hit the bus. The Spaniard was taken to the hospital and had surgery on a broken bone in his wrist. A spokeswoman for federal prosecutors, Frauke Koehler, said metal from one of the bombs lodged in a headrest. It could easily have been a lot worse. "I can't forget the faces," Sahin said of his teammates, who ducked for cover when the explosions hit. "I will never forget these faces in my life for sure. Oh yeah, when I saw Marc there, and I saw Schmelle (Marcel Schmelzer), I sat next to Schmelle and I will never forget Schmelle's face. It was unbelievable." Schmelzer also highlighted the impact of the attack on his side. "We have to function like puppets," the Dortmund captain said. "You read the whole time of an attack on our bus. But you shouldn't forget there were 30 people sitting in it, so it's an attack on us as people. It makes us incredibly sad but also incredibly fortunate to be standing here today, especially when you hear the details that are coming out (from the investigation). We're just incredibly lucky no one else besides Marc was seriously injured." On Wednesday, Tuchel was stinging in his criticism of UEFA for going ahead with the Champions League game so soon after the attack. "We had the feeling that we were being treated as if a beer can had hit our bus," said Tuchel, who claimed he wasn't asked about whether to proceed with the game. But Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said Tuesday that a congested calendar meant there was little option for postponing the game further. UEFA spokesman Pedro Pinto told The Associated Press the governing body was in touch with all parties. Tuchel may have been trying to protect his players, but it's clear that the attack had an effect on his side. "Most players hardly slept, myself included," Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl said. "I tried to come to terms with it with my family, tried to wind down and switch off. In the end, in the game, we made the best we could of it." Amid increased security and while the investigations continue, Dortmund will have to make the best of it again Saturday as it seeks to improve upon its fourth place to secure automatic Champions League qualification. Fourth only brings a playoff. Apart from Bartra, who would have been suspended for an accumulation of yellow cards anyway, Dortmund is struggling with injuries - there was one spot free on the bench against Monaco because of a lack of available players. "The more time we get, the better," Tuchel said Thursday, adding he hoped Marco Reus could make his return. Dortmund is unbeaten in a club-record 34 league games at home. It has scored in its last 19 games, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang second behind Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski in the scoring chart. Lewandowski has 26 goals in 28 games. Aubameyang, who played two games less, has 25. Frankfurt, which was previously third, has lost its last four games away and it hasn't won any of its last nine.

Uerdingen 0-2 Borussia Dortmund: Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer fire giants past stubborn minnows in first round of German Cup
Uerdingen offered severe resistance but was undone by Bundesliga side
Kevin Großkreutz, formerly from Dortmund, played the right back for hosts
Marco Reus broke deadlock just after the break after aimless first half
Paco Alcacer curled in a brilliant free kick to seal the result 20 minutes from time

Borussia Dortmund overcame a persistent challenge from the third division Uerdingen and a reunion with world cup winner Kevin Großkreutz to win 2-0 on Friday in the first round of the German Cup.
Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer both scored for Dortmund, which simply had too much firepower for the designated home team despite an excellent performance by Uerdingen goalkeeper Lukas Konigshofer in Düsseldorf.
& # 39; It was not harder than expected. We knew what to expect, & said Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl.
Marco Reus scored the opening goal of the match just after half time against Uerdingen
Kevin Großkreutz enjoyed a reunion with his former side and was given a great reception
& # 39; A lot can happen in the first round, also for the smaller teams. That's why we had to work. & # 39;
Großkreutz, a Dortmund fan who played for his hometown team from 2009-2015, was celebrated by visiting fans before the game.
& # 39; It was great to see the old colleagues and the fans. Borussia Dortmund will always be my team & # 39 ;, says Großkreutz, who had organized 200 tickets for family and friends.
Paco Alcacer scored with a brilliant free kick to seal the seal over the third division
The striker's effort let the side of the Bundesliga breathe the sigh of enlightenment
The 31-year-old Großk reutz reacted by removing Lukasz Piszczek's header in the fifth minute. 013]
Mats Hummels made a difficult debut in his first game back for Dortmund. The former German defender, who returned from Bayern Munich, was lucky to avoid a yellow card before an error almost gave Uerdingen the lead minutes before the break.
Osayamen Osawe dragged his shot wide when he only had goalkeeper Marwin Hitz
Reus broke the deadlock four minutes after the break, although TV repetitions showed that he may have used his right arm to cross for Manuel Akanji before he scored, and Alcacer curled a brilliant free kick over the 70 minute mark.
There was a lot of travel support for Dortmund that went on to the second round

The PSG told Barca that forget Verratti
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
the boat already knows first-hand that Marco Verratti is “tranferrable”. So is it has made know the own President Nasser to the Khalaifi . He President of the Paris Saint Germain you considered basic in its project to place to the club French among them large of Europe. That Yes, in the case that he could leave the Parisian club, the Italian international dreams of playing at Camp Nou, his favorite team.
also, the relations between PSG and Barca, that are correct, was missing more, not cross by the best time in topics relating to the mercato after them attempts Barça by sign to Marquinhos and Thiago Silva and them French of negotiate with Neymar and ‘ tempt ‘ to Lionel Messi . There was an Exchange hard of calls and messages to the respect.
the arrival of Patrick Kluivert to the post of director technical has softened somewhat things as it was seen in the recent visit of the boat to Paris for the Champions League match. The personal friendliness of Kluivert and his Catalan past has served to file rough edges.
very quoted
why, for more than his representative Donato di Campli insists that “If the PSG not win titles it will rethink its future”, the truth is that Marco Verratti is in a real golden cage. And stating that the ‘no’ has received the boat have shared it before Bayern, Chelsea and Juventus, the other three teams most interested in his signing, even if Real madrid do not miss him. The Vecchia signora already tried of make is with its services, without success, when transferred to Paul Pogba to the Manchester United. In the case of Carlo Ancelotti already wanted it when he trained at Real Madrid and now considers to be the ideal replacement for Xabier Alonso at the Bavarian club.
Ariedo Braida, the baza
Marco Verratti always has been praised by Xavi Hernandez that said to MD that you saw as “the signing ideal for the Barca”, as its possible substitute, as allegedly has said Andres Iniesta in revelations of the midfielder of the PSG, Blaise Matuidi after the party of the Park of them Princes.
the boat would have to his please the presence of Ariedo Braida that was the person that recommended in your day to frame Verratti gives Leonardo of Araujo then director technical of the PSG, when the player militated in the Pescara in Second Division of Italy and was trained by Zdenek Zeman . By the way, technical Czech, q EU has returned to the Pescara, said today in La Gazzetta that would recommend his former pupil that he sign for Barça. To the question of what would advise to Marco Verratti Zdenek Zeman was clear: “he will know choose, but I you would see very well in the Barca”.
Braida not has lost the contact with the boy, is looked at even not makes much in Paris on a visit family of the Advisor FC Barcelona. Also the line directly with Donato di Campli is constant but is the first that knows that, today, Marco Verratti is a dream prohibited. That Yes, in any case, if changes, the boat would be in ‘pole position’.
strong midfielder
the boat looking for the international market, to the mercato of summer, a strong midfield physically and technically. German Julian Weigl (Borussia Dortmund) would be the ideal goal, since it has escaped the German of Syrian origin Mahmoud Dahoud (Borussia M’Gladbach, 21 years) was a footballer who loved to Robert Fernández and his ‘scouting’ and that shone in matches against Barca in the Champions League for this season. A time more, the Borussia Dortmund is has in advance and you have signed. Already it is not seeking a middle Centre that may be Sergio Busquets relay which also, but a midfielder who provide strength to the wide area and the pressure of the team. The sevillista Steven N’ N’zonzi would be an example of that objective. One of the more like, authentic ‘ covered ‘, is Corentin Tolisso (22 years, Olympique Lyonnais). Barca is threshing the Ligue 1 French in search of players like current player Jorge Sampaoli . This way not collides with tracking Bernardo Silva and Maxime López another type of media, more in the style of Xavi Hernandez and Andrés Iniesta .
Robert Fernandez is is moving in its work of search, tied of feet and hands, by the topic economic. Equal that le has happened with the side right (not could sign or to Darijo Srna or to Branislav Ivanovic ) now is see unable to advance is to their rival.
nor you helps the indecision about its future of Luis Enrique although Robert Fernandez already has clear that decision goes to take the technical Asturian and is prepared to the respect in all them aspects of mercato . current .edeysistema of management of the boat that does not allow its technical Secretary put baza in the sa
