DC Comics' "Ape-ril Special" Goes on Sale in March 2024
DC Comics has announced a special ape-centric adventure for 2024. Ape-ril Special #1 will feature stories from writers John Layman, Joshua Hale Fialkov, and Gene Yang and art from artists Karl Mostert, Phil Hester, and Bernard Chang.
As per DC Comics, "Gorilla Grodd's recent incarcer-ape-tion in the pages of DC’s The Flash comic book series has left a void that Monsieur Mallah is more than happy to fill. Ape-sembling a group of the DCU’s most sinister simians, Mallahforms the Legion of D(oo-oo-ah-ah)m, with an eye toward worlddomin-ape-tion. But the world won’t be conquered that easily! Enter the all-ape JUNGLE L(ee-ee)gue. Can this team of hero-eekanthropoids be the salv-ape-tion we need, or will Mallah’s team of maniacal monkeys bring forth the ape-pocalypse?"
Ape-ril Special #1, featuring a main cover by Dan Mora, a variant cover by Bernard Chang, and a "Banana Scent variant cover by Hayden Sherman, goes on sale on March 19, 2024.

Final writing credits for live-action ATLA Season 1 have been submitted; Bryke wrote two episodes
With the final writing credits now submitted, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra co-creators and Avatar Studios co-heads Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino (“Bryke”) co-wrote two episodes of Netflix’s eight-episode live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 1: episode 1 and episode 6.
We already knew about episode 1, which was co-written between live-action showrunner Albert Kim and them.
What’s new is episode 6, the story of which was by Ubah Mohamed and Bryke and the script (aka “teleplay” in the world of TV) by Emily Kim (Marvel’s Spider-Gwen), Hunter Ries (Nick/Netflix), and Bryan only.
“Story by” + “teleplay by” = “written by”, so all the other episodes besides episode 6 had the same people for both story and script, and “teleplay by”/“written by” credits are for when someone has contributed at least 33% of a script when it comes to an adaptation. This isn’t because Bryke are the creators of the source material-- their credits for that will be separate and unrelated to episode writing credits.

This pro-censorship movement soon culminated in the creation of the Comics Code Authority, a sanitizing regulatory group whose guidelines were specifically tailored to remove EC’s comics from newsstands. EC’s final comics – until now – were published in 1956, and the hugely popular MAD was re-formatted as a magazine to escape Code scrutiny. Even so, the untimely death of EC could not erase the company’s far-reaching impact, having already inspired a young generation of readers – including John Carpenter, Guillermo del Toro, Matt Groening, James Gunn, George Lucas, Stephen King, George R.R. Martin, The Ramones, George Romero, Steven Spielberg, and hundreds more – who have cited EC’s iconoclastic brand of storytelling as a deep and primordial influence.

Your post about Judas reminded me that I wanted to ask you, what was that redneck comic you were talking about awhile ago? And generally, if you’d like, what are your top 5 favorite comics?
i must have been talking about phantom road, one of jeff lemire's current works for image, which is really really good. its a horror book, a high concept supernatural book, a road trip book, its got fucking aliens, and zombie-like shits, its now finishing its second arc, but im a few issues behind so i dont know for sure if its gonna continue, but it had legs. it could go an easy 20-30 issues i think
go read it
while youre at it, read the other lemire work at image rn, fishflies. its david cronenberg's the fly if it was folk punk and sad. also lemire does the art which is always a plus

This pro-censorship movement soon culminated in the creation of the Comics Code Authority, a sanitizing regulatory group whose guidelines were specifically tailored to remove EC’s comics from newsstands. EC’s final comics – until now – were published in 1956, and the hugely popular MAD was re-formatted as a magazine to escape Code scrutiny. Even so, the untimely death of EC could not erase the company’s far-reaching impact, having already inspired a young generation of readers – including John Carpenter, Guillermo del Toro, Matt Groening, James Gunn, George Lucas, Stephen King, George R.R. Martin, The Ramones, George Romero, Steven Spielberg, and hundreds more – who have cited EC’s iconoclastic brand of storytelling as a deep and primordial influence.

The company’s audaciously inspired sensibilities have continuously echoed through nearly all facets of entertainment – like pieces of shrapnel embedded in American imagination,” said Oni Press President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson. “It’s both a huge honor and immense responsibility to be entrusted to work alongside the Gaines family in inhabiting EC’s indomitable spirit for a new generation. At a moment when we find ourselves confronting the same reactionary forces – injustice, inequality, and of course, censorship – that EC challenged head-on, we intend to write a new and powerful chapter that honors and expands one of the most important legacies the comic book medium has ever produced.”
Oni Press’ first two new EC titles – EPITAPHS FROM THE ABYSS and CRUEL UNIVERSE, a pair of horror and science anthologies in the classic EC mold – will debut in July and August 2024, respectively, before the publisher introduces more series in genres and formats that will expand the scope and scale of the EC publishing line in ways never before attempted.

EC Comics Returns at Oni Press
EC Comics - founded by M.C. "Max" Gaines as "Educational Comics" back in 1944, renamed "Entertaining Comics" by William M. Gaines in the late 1940s, original home of Tales for the Crypt, Mad Magazine, Weird Science, Two-Fisted Tales, and more, killed by the censorship of The Comics Code Authority in 1956 - is now back after a near 70-year hiatus.
Oni Press is partnering with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. to foster the return of EC Comics with all-new series this summer. The publishing program will be overseen by Hunter Gorison (Oni Press President & Publisher) and Sierra Hahn (Oni Press Editor-in-Chief) in partnership with Cathy Gaines Mifud and Corey Mifsud, (administrators of William M. Gaines Agent, Inc, and daughter and grandson, respectively, of William M. Gaines).
Oni Press' curated line of EC titles will include at least two series on a monthly basis beginning in July 2024, in the genres of horror science fiction, fantasy, and more. Creatives include writers Jason Aaron, Brian Azzarello, Rodney Barnes, Corinna Bechko, Cullen Bunn, Christopher Cantwell, Cecil Castellucci, Chris Condon, Joshua Hale Fialkov, J. Holtham, Jeff Jensen, Matt Kindt, Sean Lewis, Stephanie Phillips, Jay Stephens, Zac Thompson, and Ben H. Winters and artists Kano, Peter Krause, Leomacs, Malachi Ward, and Dustin Weaver.
New EC Comics Epitaphs from the Abyss #1, featuring a cover by Lee Bermejo, goes on sale in July 2024, and Cruel Universe #1, featuring a cover by Greg Smallwood, goes on sale in August 2024.

DC's Primate Paradox: The Jungle League Unleashed
"The Jungle League," DC Comics' latest venture into the wild, is set to swing into action with the release of DC’s Ape-Ril Special #1 in March 2024. This one-shot anthology introduces a unique team of superheroes, the Jungle League, featuring iconic characters like Beppo, the Super-Monkey, and Detective Chimp. Tasked with thwarting Monsieur Mallah and his newly formed Legion of D(oo-oo-ah-ah)m, the Jungle League promises a wild ride through the DC Universe.
As 2023 draws close, DC Comics tantalizes fans with a sneak peek into the upcoming year. In March 2024, the Jungle League takes center stage, addressing a monkey-themed crisis that only these simian superheroes can resolve. With Gorilla Grodd safely behind bars, Monsieur Mallah seizes the opportunity to assemble a Legion of Doom, posing a threat that demands the unique skills of the all-ape Jungle League. The team comprises Beppo the Super-Monkey, Detective Chimp, Sam Simeon, Gleek, and the legendary Monkey Prince, promising an unforgettable adventure.
DC's Ape-Ril Special #1 pays homage to the Silver Age of Comics by featuring apes prominently on the cover. While initially a one-shot, the potential for entertaining storytelling looms large. The comic embraces the unconventional, introducing comedic variants, including a parody of Crisis on Infinite Earth #7's infamous cover by Bernard Chang and a "Banana Scent" variant by Hayden Sherman.
In addition to providing an entertaining twist on the Justice League concept, DC's Ape-Ril Special follows a successful convention from the Silver Age. Former DC editor Julius Schwartz highlighted the popularity of comics featuring apes on the covers during that era. DC seems poised to replicate that success with its monkey business in the spring of 2024. The Jungle League, while potentially a one-off for April Fool's Day, sparks anticipation for the fun and inventive storytelling that awaits in DC's latest primate-themed escapade.
Scheduled for release on March 19, 2024, DC's Ape-Ril Special #1 promises more fun than a barrel of monkeys. With stories by John Layman, Joshua Hale Fialkov, and Gene Yang, accompanied by art from Karl Mostert, Phil Hester, and Bernard Chang, the 48-page comic book invites readers into a world where justice is served with a side of simian flair. Dan Mora's main cover will complement a variant cover from Bernard Chang and a whimsical "Banana Scent" variant from Hayden Sherman.

Un jour, il est approché par un mafieux local dont la fille est portée disparue. Il va donc mener son enquête, une enquête certes classique en apparence. Seulement voilà, on vient de diagnostiquer à Frank une tumeur au cerveau, en phase terminale. Alors arrivera t-il à retrouver cette jeune femme disparue et à sortir de cette mission indemne ? Mystère… ~~~ Je suis très heureux d’avoir pu découvrir le nouveau roman graphique des Éditions Sonatine après le très réussi « l’accident de chasse ». On retrouve ici un polar assez différent mais tout aussi intéressant ! On est, dès le début de l’ouvrage, plongé dans le style des vieux polars noirs. J’ai adoré l’ambiance qui ressort de cette bd sombre et mystérieuse. Les dessins sont très beaux et d’un dynamisme impressionnant, le choix du noir et blanc convient parfaitement à l’histoire. Il y a une atmosphère dans cet album qui m’a fasciné ! Caboche c’est donc un polar noir qui a tous les ingrédients pour être qualifié de réussite ! Je vous le conseille vivement 👍🏻 📚 L’avez-vous lu ?
