Adrien English Mysteries 5.5
4 out of 5
Adrien English is surprised when Kevin O'Reilly, an old friend from England, stumbles into his bookstore desperate for help. His boyfriend is missing and no one seems to care. Adrien knows just the person to look for the missing man, his lover and private investigator, Jake.
I had read all the previous books in this series. Although I was looking for m/m romance at the time, instead I found a tightly written mystery series that, yes, had some m/m romance woven within. That romance was fraught with misunderstandings, panic over being outed, and dangerous situations that seemed to pull Adrien and Jake, a cop during most of the books, together. Even if Jake was fighting to stay securely in the closet with everything he's worth.
Jake was someone I both disliked, thinking Adrien could do so much better, and sympathized with, knowing just how torn he was between his job and his attraction to men. The last book softened my feelings for him somewhat, but this installment may be the nudge I needed to truly accept him for Adrien. The ending was the sweet and oh so satisfying.

REVIEW
Puzzle for Two by Josh Lanyon
If a dime store detective novel mated with a cozy mystery this book might be the offspring – a bit slow to begin with but oh so sweet by the end. I am unsure if this is a one and done or perhaps the beginning of a new series. Either way – a fun way to spend the day.
What I liked: * Zachariah “Zach” Davies: accountant, private investigator, brother, son, wants to keep his father’s business open, and has high hopes for the future.
* Flint Carey: private investigator, ex-marine, wants to buy the Davies business, might have a yen for Zach, more than meets the eye
* Brooke Davies: Zach’s younger sister, receptionist, has dreams that do not include college, bright and more capable than her brother thinks
* The mystery of who the murderer was and the reason for murder that finally was illuminated
* The creep-factor provided by Alton- the client who hired Zach
* The way the relationship between Flint and Zach developed and the potential they have for the future
* The feel-good ending
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about the motivations of some the characters and how amoral they must have been
Did I enjoy this book? Yes, but have enjoyed other books by this author more
Would I read more by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
3-4 Stars
BLURB
It was like those crazy detective novels he read as a kid… Fledgling PI Zachariah Davies’s wealthy and eccentric client, toymaker Alton Beacher, wants to hire an investigator who can pose as his boyfriend while figuring out who is behind the recent attempts on his life. And Zach, struggling to save the business his father built, is just desperate enough to set aside his misgivings and take the job. But it doesn’t take long for Zach to realize all is not as it seems (and, given that it all seems pretty weird…). The only person he can turn to for help is equally struggling, equally desperate–but a whole lot more experienced–rival PI Flint Carey. Former Marine Flint has been waiting for Zach to throw in the towel and sell whatever’s left of the Davies Detective Agency to him. Still, he’s unwillingly attracted to the game but inexperienced accountant-turned-shamus, and can’t help offering a helping hand when Zach runs into trouble. Especially when it’s hard to imagine any worse trouble than having your client murdered.

Note
It's true that dudes who write m/m stand out in the market in a good way. It's always of exciting to see a new guy on the romance scene, and they definitely get more initial attention from me. But my excitement evaporates when I find misogyny in the books or social media, and that goes for trans guys too. If your gender euphoria includes dunking on women (especially trans women) and "theyfabs" to shore up your fragile sense of masculinity, I can't support you.
--
I know, right?
Whether we take it as unfair asspats or queer solidarity or whatever, the buying public likes it when male authors turn up. (Hence the repeated scandals with people like Josh Lanyon pretending to be men.) All they need to do is not be blatant jerks to a huge chunk of their audience. You wouldn't think that would be a high bar... and yet...
Everyone was excited for Jordan when he came out. I see the occasional cis dude who's clear on romance history stuff and the relationship between slash fanfic and the "m/m romance" industry, like Jamie Fessenden. There are perfectly nice guys in the space. Self-defeating idiot authors should take note.
Hell, they don't even have to be nice in the privacy of their own heads. They just have to keep it off their author twitter. It's PR 101.

Pride 2022 - Day 19
Mystery novel!!! I love mystery novels and cozy mysteries, and finding ones that are LGBTQ+ is just... over-the-top wonderful for me : )
I enjoyed this enough to read in one day (the audiobook version) so I'd say it's pretty good! The murder premise was interesting and enjoyable. The setting was super fun and awesome. I liked a lot of the phrases/descriptions Lanyon used, and there were plenty of times where I chuckled or laughed out loud just from little bite-sized bits of wit sprinkled throughout.

Australian Police: They Were Saying "Boo-Urns"
One of the more shocking incidents witnessed in anti-Israel protests that occurred immediately following Hamas' October 7 attack was the allegation that marchers in Sydney chanted "gas the Jews". But while several witnesses testified to hearing the chant, local police have now determined that they do not believe those were the words that were spoken. Now, before I tell you what the police concluded was the chant actually deployed that day, I want to share a couple of reactions to this finding: The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils called for prosecutions of those who disseminated "false claims" that had unfairly vilified Palestinians and Muslims and harmed the "delicate fabric" of social cohesion. [....]  Protest organiser Palestine Action Group, which long maintained the "gas" chant was never uttered, called for widespread media retractions.  Spokesman Josh Lees suggested the wrongly captioned video was designed to damage the movement, pointing to "a long history of false claims of anti-Semitism used to silence critics of the state of Israel". Strong stuff! Now here's what the police concluded was being chanted: They "concluded with overwhelming certainty that the words used were, 'Where's the Jews?'" Deputy Commissioner Mal Lanyon said on Friday. Ohhhh. It was only "where's the Jews?"! I can see why the organizers are demanding an apology -- it's getting to the point where an angry mob can't demand to know where the Jews are without someone saying that's antisemitic (rolls eyes). The only offensive thing I see here is the poor grammar! For what it's worth, the umbrella Australian Jewish Association stands by its initial conclusion that the chant was indeed "gas the Jews." via The Debate Link https://ift.tt/Kie7UQ2
