International Read to Me Day
It’s March 19th which means that it’s International Read to Me Day. A day that I certainly enjoy now. A few years back, I wouldn’t have been able to say such a thing. I would’ve laughed and said that I’d rather read the story, the book, whatever the material was myself. I would’ve been hard-pressed for knowing a narrator, voice actor, and the likes that I passionately gravitated towards. With…

Accepting requests for some simple-ish portraits. I’m used to drawing DA, ME, Cyberpunk, and other video games-related characters, but I’m open to drawing other stuff. I’ll choose whatever I’m more comfortable with.
Portraits only, not accepting OCs at the moment. Request via replies or DMs!

In 1977, John Inman, then enjoying international fame as Mr Humphries in Are You Being Served?, was given his own star vehicle by Thames Television. He played Neville Sutcliffe, proprietor of a Blackpool fish and chip shop, who inherits an ailing rock confectionery factory from his estranged father.
Odd Man Out was written by Vince Powell (Love Thy Neighbour, Nearest and Dearest, Mind Your Language), and the humour was not exactly subtle; "How's yer rock, cock?" was the series catchphrase. Unusually for a sitcom, John Inman did a brief and sincere sign-off at the end of the credits, "Thanks ever so much for watching. Hope we'll see you next week."
Not even John Inman's undoubted talents and likeability, supported by Josephine Tewson and Peter Butterworth, could make much of it in the end, and it ran for only one series of seven episodes.
John Inman returned to Mr Humphries and Are You Being Served?, which ran until 1985, 70 episodes and one feature film, and became one of the BBC's most successful exports, gaining a huge following internationally, including in the US. There was a sequel, Grace and Favour, which ran over two series in 1992-93, with most of the surviving principal cast.
According to producer David Croft, when Are You Being Served? was commissioned in 1972, BBC management told him to get rid of the 'little poof'. Croft, who was famously loyal to his unofficial stock company, responded by saying that without John Inman, there would be no series at all.
John Inman passed away in 2007, aged 71.

Jenny Erpenbeck and Michael Hofmann have won the 2024 International Booker prize for Erpenbeck’s “personal and political” novel Kairos, translated by Hofmann from German.
Erpenbeck is the first German writer to win, while Hofmann is the first male translator to win. The £50,000 prize money will be split equally between the pair.
Kairos tells the story of a relationship set against the collapse of East Germany. The novel is a “richly textured evocation of a tormented love affair, the entanglement of personal and national transformations”, said judging chair and broadcaster Eleanor Wachtel.
Hofmann’s translation “captures the eloquence and eccentricities of Erpenbeck’s writing, the rhythm of its run-on sentences, the expanse of her emotional vocabulary”, she added.
Erpenbeck said: “Thirty years have passed since the country in which I was born is gone, so I could dare to look back and take my time to carefully research what I lived through without really being aware of it.”
“I got this idea to make a collage of this love story and the historic story”, she added. This gave her the opportunity to examine how things “meant to be true and great” and that had “utopian potential” could turn into “totally failed communication.”
Hofmann said: “I was really lucky to be asked to do this book … And I thank Jenny for trusting me.”
Wachtel said the judging decision was reached with “considerable consensus”, and that the final judging conversation took half an hour. “I was actually surprised at the ultimate unanimity … this was the book that everyone turned to when it came to the crunch.”
Kairos is Erpenbeck’s fourth novel. Her second, The End of Days, won the Independent foreign fiction prize in 2015, which was the precursor to the International Booker prize. Her third, Go, Went, Gone, was longlisted for the International Booker prize in 2018.
Hofmann has also won the Independent foreign fiction prize – in 1995, for his translation of his father Gert Hofmann’s novel, The Film Explainer. He was a judge for the International Booker prize in 2018, the year that Erpenbeck was previously longlisted.
“Kairos is one of the bleakest and most beautiful novels I have ever read,” wrote Natasha Walter in her Guardian review of the novel. “The dark nature of [the] relationship finds expression in Erpenbeck’s characteristically unyielding style. The novel is written in the present tense, a technique that can be flattening when used by lesser writers. In an elegant translation by Michael Hofmann, here it creates a claustrophobic intensity.”
The other books shortlisted for the prize were Not a River by Selva Almada, translated by Annie McDermott; The Details by Ia Genberg, translated by Kira Josefsson; Mater 2-10 by Hwang Sok-yong, translated by Sora Kim-Russell and Youngjae Josephine Bae; What I’d Rather Not Think About by Jente Posthuma, translated by Sarah Timmer Harvey; and Crooked Plow by Itamar Vieira Junior, translated by Johnny Lorenz.
Wachtel was joined on the judging panel by poet Natalie Diaz, novelist Romesh Gunesekera, visual artist William Kentridge, and writer, editor and translator Aaron Robertson.
Previous winners of the prize include Han Kang and translator Deborah Smith, Olga Tokarczuk and translator Jennifer Croft, and Lucas Rijneveld and translator Michele Hutchison. Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov and translator Angela Rodel won the 2023 prize for Time Shelter.

JOSEPHINE SPRING IS LOOKING FOR HER YOUNGER HALF SIBLING!
triggers: childhood neglect, potential parent death.
ooc: marie
Character: Jo Spring
Type of Connection: Younger half-sibling (can be a brother or non-binary sibling but it’s orginally a sister)
WC Name: Amy (changeable) Spring
Age Range: 21-23
FC Options: Isabel May, Diana Silvers, Sebastian Croft, Kit Connor, Edvin Ryding, Elsie Fischer, Kizzy Edgell or UTP (as long as it’s believable and that they’re at least half white)
Would you like to be contacted?: yes here!
Trigger Warnings: childhood neglect, potential parent death
Connection Description: born in Kismet Harbor and has never left. Depending of how old she ends up being, Jo was present for the first 3-5 years of her life. She could be born right close to her parents’ wedding or after (or even a bit before if you prefer to have her on the bit older side). About 10 years after Jo left, she called her because DCFS was threatening to take her away. What happens in the meantime is UTP as long as it leads there. I imagined the mother either left or died, but when is UTP. The relationship to the dad is also mostly UTP. When Jo comes back, she takes care of Amy. Amy could be studying still and Jo would help with that, but if she is, she’d have a part time job. Jo and Amy are very close and her sister is super important to Jo. Personality-wise, I imagined her somewhat similar to Jo (stubborn, sarcastic, loyal) but maybe a bit more open, that’s pretty much UTP though.

Beatrix Unsdatter, born in Denmark under the sign of Libra, parents migrated to Australia in the middle fifties.ĬERRIDWEN. Alice Audrey Farr, born Mosman, Sydney, New South Wales, on August 1, 1956.īEATRIX. This book is dedicated to those who helped me write it.ĪRACHNE. The I becomes an alphabet, the my becomes ours. Thus my ideas weigh with those of others. I absorbed it all with gratitude and worked with a discipline and strength I felt I owed them. Throughout the many drafts, I had readers, arguers, encouragers, critics and researchers who worked for the book, the idea, their own reasons, with implicit faith in my purpose to uncover a truth to tell the truth and not resort to a gossipy theft of their ideas and their lives. The merging of the diagrammatic and chaotic was a poem. It is dependent on inspiration, excitement, the tides of language and having the time. That was to ensure a symphonic and historic depth.
#HUNTING LESSON ROSE TAIPAN SERIES#
The first draft was a series of diagrams, and nouns. The daring to make a novel from geometry was possible in the rarified air of a ‘sinecure’. Christina Stead had given me two clues with her mention of maths and ‘no men in it at all’. ‘Everywoman’ was women the singular does not compute when one investigates the nature of the feminine.Ī worker, no longer a taxi-driver, now a writer with an office and a title, albeit for ten weeks, my job, then, was to put my theories into practice: a daunting project when it became clear to me what I had to do. It was necessary to get to know a mob of women, all searching for their own freedom. I could not squeeze this ‘everywoman’ out of my mind. Simply screening an accurate description of one’s life with a facade of false names and places was not satisfying to me either as a writer or a reader. Fiction is a literary composition wherein the writer creates above, below and around the real world. I was sick of sorry women, in my own and others’ stories, who were not in control of their own downfall.
#HUNTING LESSON ROSE TAIPAN FREE#
I had been hunting for an ‘everywoman’, the free archetypal female, to underlie a possible Hamlet, Peer Gynt, Candid of my gender. Since 1974 I have been developing theories of the feminine aesthetic in literature.
#HUNTING LESSON ROSE TAIPAN HOW TO#
Two or three years later, I was writer-in-residence at Monash University, wondering what and how to write, suffering the culture shock and absurdity of changing from ‘taxi-driver’ to ‘writer’. But she took me to lunch at Monash University, where she was writer-in-residence, and discussed the mathematical aspects of my first chaotic attempt at long fiction, Lots Of Potential. Perhaps Remember The Tarantella started with Christina Stead’s challenge to me: it’s very difficult to make an interesting novel with no men in it at all. Publication assisted by the Literature Board of the Australia Council, the Federal Government’s arts funding and advisory body.

5 and 13 please!
(Not sure if you meant this for the muse or mun, so I’ll do both. Muse in bold, mun in italics)5: Describe your aestheticSpotless white walls and floors, the constant sound of machinery, whites and blacks with splashes of red and gold.(I don’t really think I have one? but here goes nothing) Flannel shirts and video game t-shirts, overcast windy days, fresh snowfall, heavy thunderstorms, the woods in autumn.13: If taken, talk about your girlfriend/wife!“An absolute lunatic. Smarter than your average human, for better or for worse. Dangerous and violent, but… exciting. A never solved puzzle that seems to take pleasure in watching me try and pick her apart.”Lol I’m single af so nope.  Do fictional wives count? I have some of those.

Ask me for a short fanfic!!
I love to write based on a random sentence or situation, so... if there's something you really want to see on a fic feel free to ask for it!!
Choose a ship / characters and give me a sentence / scenario.
It doesn't has to be a romantic thing, but in case that it is, I'll leave here the ships I enjoy the most.
Feel free to ask for others (this are the ones that I feel I'll do a better job because I'm more invested in them).
If by some kind of miracle I have more than one request 😅 I'll choose the one that I find more interesting to write, but I won't discard the rest... They'll just take longer to do.
I'm a Spanish speaker, so feel free to ask for something in Spanish (The quality will be better in fact 😂)
My favourite ships:
Shepard x Kaidan (I prefer femshep but both are ok)
Ryder x Reyes
fInquisitor x Cullen
Lara Croft x Jacob (I know I'm alone in this one but I need to put it on the list)
Ships I enjoy a lot:
Shepard x Thane / Tali / Miranda / Jack
Ryder x Jaal / Cora
Inquisitor x Dorian / Cassandra / Josephine
Warden x Alistair
Hawke x Sebastian / Fenris
And many more...
Things I won't write about:
I will not change anyone's sexual preferences.
