Castles in the Air

I'm extremely excited to announce that the game I've been working on for the past 4 years is coming to Kickstarter! Castles in the Air (CitA) is a tabletop RPG inspired by the novels of Louisa May Alcott and L.M. Montgomery. Players start as children with boundless dreams who will change over the years based on the relationships they form and choices they make. I think it's a really special game, and I'm looking forward to being able to share it with everyone.

If that name sounds familiar, Storybrewers is the company that created Good Society: A Jane Austen RPG. I feel very honored that they reached out to me about publishing Castles in the Air. While Castles in the Air is a standalone game, its mechanics are inspired by Good Society, and if you like Good Society, I think you'll like CitA too as it allows you to tell similarly compelling stories.

I will be creating some blog posts talking about the literary inspirations for different parts of the game in the weeks leading up to the Kickstarter and during its run. I will be using this as a master post to keep track of all of them, so make sure to check back here or follow my blog if you are interested.

A lowland gorilla, saved from a bushmeat market, rests drowsily in the arms of the man who helped rescue her.

Pinkin, the gorilla, awoke after being sedated on a drive in Cameroon alongside Appolinaire Ndohoudou, a worker with Ape Action Africa.

The nonprofit works to save gorillas like Pinkin from bush meat markets, where butchered animals such as apes, elephants and antelopes are sold as food.

Poachers captured Pinkin and removed her from her habitat before she found herself safe with @ApeActionAfrica. 

Appolinaire, who once fled Chad for Cameroon after a civil war, now helps raise gorillas like Pinkin.

So who in totals travelled with the doctor? I know we saw donna, but what other companions are there?

This is gonna be a big one, so *Takes a deep breath* In his first incarnation, the First Doctor started his travels with his granddaughter Susan, accidentally taking her school teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright. Along his travels, people would come and go, including Vicki Pallister, Steven Taylor, Katarina, Sara Kingdom, Oliver Harper, Dodo Chaplet, Ben Jackson and Polly Wright.

In his second incarnation, the Second Doctor would continue his travels with Ben and Polly, taking on Jamie McCrimmon, who would stick with him through his life. Along the way, The Doctor would also travel with Victoria Waterfield and Zoe Heriot. It was during this time that The Doctor would also meet Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, who would become an important figure during his most of his lives.

In exile is his third incarnation, the Third Doctor was forced to work with the Brigadier as UNIT's scientific advisor. Working initially with Liz Shaw, Mike Yates and John Benton, he would finally be able to travel again, first with Jo Grant, and later Sarah-Jane Smith.

In his fourth incarnation, continuing to travel with Sarah-Jane Smith and joined by Harry Sullivan, the Fourth Doctor would go on to travel with Naomi Cross, Leela of the Sevateem, Margaret Hopwood, two models of the robot dog K9, "Anne Kelso", Romana in two of her incarnations and Adric.

In his fifth incarnation, The Doctor continued travelling with Adric and took on Nyssa of Trakken and Tegan Jovanka, who he had met towards the end of his previous incarnation. Along the way, he would also travel with Marc, Thomas Brewster, Hannah Bartholomew, Vislor Turlough, Peri Brown and Erimem.

Still travelling with Peri in his sixth incarnation, The Doctor would travel with others including Frobisher, Evelyn Smythe, Charlotte Pollard (retroactively under the guise of Mila due to already travelling with his Eighth Incarnation), Flip Jackson, Constance Clarke, Melanie Bush and Hebe Harrison.

Continuing to travel with Mel in his seventh Incarnation, the Doctor would go on to be joined by Ace McShane, Bernice Summerfield, Hex Schofield, Sally Morgan, Lysandra Aristedes, Mags, Raine Creevy, Elizabeth Klein, Will Arrowsmith, Chris Cwej and Roz Forrester, though ultimately ended up travelling on his home.

The Eighth Doctor would find himself starting afresh, briefly meeting Grace Holloway and Chang Lee, before going on to travel with Izzy Sinclair, Fitz Kreiner, Charlotte Pollard, C'rizz, Mary Shelley, Lucie Miller, Tamsin Drew, Molly O'Sullivan, Liv Chenka, Helen Sinclair, Tania Bell, Andy Davidson and Bliss.

The War Doctor would go on to make a point of travelling alone, never taking on a travelling companion during his life.

Though he would continue travelling alone for much of his life, the Ninth Doctor would finally yield and take on Rose Tyler as a companion, and later Adam Mitchell, Captain Jack Harkness and Tara Mishra

In his tenth incarnation, The Doctor would continue travelling with Rose, though would later go on to travel with Mickey Smith, Martha Jones, a returning Captain Jack, Donna Noble, Gabby Gonzalez, Cindy Wu, Anya Kingdom and Mark Seven.

The Eleventh Doctor would start his travels with Amy Pond, going on to take on Rory Williams, Alice Obiefune, John Jones, ARC, The Squire, Abslom Daak, The Sapling, Valerie Lockwood and Clara Oswald.

Clara Oswald would continue to travel with the Twelfth Doctor, who would go on to travel with Hattie Munroe, Nardole and Bill Potts.

In her Thirteenth Incarnation, the Doctor would spend her entire incarnation travelling Yasmin Khan, being joined by Ryan Sinclair, Graham O'Brien and Dan Lewis.

Throughout many of their lives, The Doctor would constantly meet River Song, though on many occasions would be forced to forget their encounters to preserve the web of time.

So! Sorry that it took forever for me to get back to this. It has been a while since I´v read AOGG and I wanted to think my answer. I do read lots of Montgomery. The last book I read was "Blue Castle" (which I love).

How do I feel about this character?

My first introduction to Gil was the 1985 Anne of Green Gables series where Jonathan Crombie played Gil and like millions of other young girls I fell in love with him and his performance. Later I read all the AOGG books many times.

I think Maude wrote Gilbert to be every woman´s dream man. What I know about Maude is that when she was younger she used to date a very nice looking young man and they liked to "make out" (her words not mine) and he became a model for Gilbert.

Maude Montgomery was very unhappily married. Her husband was a preacher who suffered from a disease that made him see frightening religious visions. I´d imagine it would have been very scary for the husband, and also Maud and their two sons.

I think Maude did the same as Louisa May Alcott and Jane Austen. She wrote happy romances and relationships to her novels because she could not live in one herself.

What most people love about Gilbert is that he is a very kind person. Gilbert is also a trickster, and many people compare him to Laurie in Little Women, but I think the essential difference between Gil and Laurie is that Gilbert hardly ever makes jokes that harm other people. Laurie catfishes Meg and he tries to pressure Jo to have sex.

Gilbert doesn´t do stuff like that. He is emotionally much more mature (the braid pulling and the carrot is the only time when he isn´t). Funny thing about him pulling Anne´s hair, I always thought that it would be something that Jo might do in Little Women since she identified with boys and not always in such a good way.

Gilbert is smart, he is funny and when I was a child my favourite Anne book was the third one where she goes to college. Anne is dating that guy whose name I now forgot, and when she tried to imagine her future Gil just kept popping up there. I always thought it was interesting how she tried to convince her that Gil was just a friend, but I think Marilla said it the best when she said that Anne had very unrealistic ideas of what she thought love and romance were. I think many of us have a similar experiences when we are younger.

hmm...maybe Diana, in the book Diana really is a super Gil and Anne shipper, and so is most of Avonlea let´s be honest.

My unpopular opinion about this character?

It´s funny how people sometimes say to me that Friedrich in Little Women is written to be too perfect and I always say that well...he is based on Henry David Thoreau and Louisa loved him and got mad if anyone would criticise Henry.

Maybe something similar happened with Maude, was Gilbert based on men who she liked and admired? I think so.

One thing I wish would happen/ had happened with this character in the canon?

As much as I love Anne, a story through Gilbert´s pov would have been super interesting. I actually think one of the things that he fell for in Anne was her intelligence. They are both quite academic characters when you think about it.

My Grandma passed away earlier this year and it might sound strange to some but some of my happiest memories of my childhood have to do with me staying at my grandma´s garden reading Anne of Green Gables. She had a big garden with apple trees and currant bushes and I imagined myself being in Green Gables.

So lately every time when I have tried to read AOGG it has felt a bit painful and bittersweet. It always makes me think of my grandma and her beautiful garden.

Treat Yourself Like a Fictional Character

I just finished working on Mind Blind for tonight. It’s 1:30 am, which means I’m sleepy and thus philosophical. Ramble under the cut.

Treat yourself like a fictional character.

I’ve had this weirdly-phrased philosophy for most my life, and attempting to explain it to others has usually resulted in me garnering odd looks. But I think it’s one reason why I’m so drawn to interactive fiction.

When I was a kid, I had Emotions. Everyone does, but I was really bad on clamping down on that capitalized E. My first suspension was in second grade, due to a play on my then-teacher’s last name. (I changed “Bushnell” to “Bush-hell”, at a Christian school where I probably would’ve gotten in less trouble for telling her to f*** off, had I known the word at that age.) I was angry and sad and mad all the dang time. Books were my solace, however. Whenever things got really rough, I’d begin to narrate the world around me as if I were the main character in a novel:

“She curls herself into a ball, suffocating her beleaguered Snowy in a hug, weeping fat tears over the fact that she must consume lima beans before having pie.” Perhaps not quite that eloquent, because I was around eight when I started doing this, but you get the idea. (Snowy was my white teddy bear. His name was not the most inspired.)

Maybe dissociating that way wasn’t the healthiest coping mechanism, and most the issues I encountered were unfortunately more serious than yucky vegetables. But it taught me something really important. When I read books, I always feel a lot of compassion for the main characters. Anne of Green Gables was my hero, because she had Emotions, too. In junior high, I even felt bad for Dorian Gray, and he’s awful. (I have many problematic favorites, ergo why Noh is a romance option.)

My point is that by stepping back and describing myself and my actions as if I were somebody else, I was forced to extend the same compassion to fictional-Jo that I gave to other fictional people.

I’m not quite sure why I feel compelled to write all this tonight. Given everything going on in the world right now, maybe someone could benefit from giving my technique a go. It may seem silly, but it genuinely showed me how to be kind to myself.

Love yourself, guys. No matter how flawed you believe yourself to be. I guarantee that if you were in a book, you’d still be at least one reader’s favorite character.
