Do you sometimes think about the fact that Sera only got to know her daughter for three years at best and then Rachel died? Do you sometimes think about everything that it implies? Do you think Chloe was the one who told her? Do you think she relapsed? Do you think about how much she was angry at James, the fact he did so much to protect Rachel, going as far as not letting Sera see her for years, only for Rachel to die at 19? Do you think she thought about how she was getting all this hope back— to see her daughter grow up, see her graduating, become an adult, this hope to be a real mother, only for said hopes to be crushed so early?
But, even worse, if she never reconnect with Rachel, and learn about her death. The way she purposefully kept herself away from her daughter, because she thought it was the right thing to do to protect her, the right thing to do as a mother. The right thing to do so Rachel could be happy. But in the end, all it did was refraining her from ever knowing her own daughter. And now, she has to live with this guilt. Knowing the last time she’s seen Rachel was when she was still a baby, and that she will never get to see her older.
Do you?

As much as I like Before The Storm, what made me not enjoy it as much was the contradictions in Rachel’s backstory. Don’t get me wrong, I think DeckNine did a great job writing her character. Kylie Brown, who was her voice actor, also did a fantastic job as her too. However her father, James being a district attorney doesn’t make sense to me. It was implied that Rachel did come from a wealthy background in Life Is Strange, so I can see why they made him have an occupation that earns a high salary. But, considering how the police practically gave up on finding Rachel, I can assume that he had a successful career as a doctor or something, yet he doesn’t have the authority to demand the police to find his missing daughter.
I doubt that DontNod had intentions of making a gameplay about Rachel, but it would’ve been a little better had they did since they were the original creators of her character. Your thoughts?
I agree. I think making James the distract attorney was a weird choice. It heavily contradicts the first game in a way that I don't think a prequal should.
If the DA's daughter vanished into thin air it seems like A: Her disappearance would be thoroughly investigated because of the risk that she was politically kidnapped. B: James had enough power to get the cops to look for Rachel with a snap of his fingers. The idea that he wouldn't is kind of absurd considering he's willing to kidnap and drug and woman based off the idea that she COULD hurt Rachel. Do you know how many things could rhetorically happen? I could unlock hidden power and magically turn into a goldfish, but that doesn't mean it's at all likely to happen. To kidnap someone on a possibility is insane.
And yeah like you said, I think it would have been better if they just made Rachel's family wealthily without them having political power that would majorly change an investigation. I honestly feel like James being a doctor or an engineer would have made more sense.
I'm fully with you that Rachel had a weird backstory. Also…does James being a DA contribute that much to the plot? Let's say he was a doctor for a second; they could still have him tangled up with Damion because he treated him at the hospital and helped him smuggle some illegal stuff out of the building before the cops showed up. In exchange, he asked for a favor later down the line that he cashed in when Sera came back. You can have basically the same plot without him being the DA, so I think it was an unnecessary detail to add that only served to make the first game more confusing. Which...is true for a lot of Before The Storm tbh. (I still love the game though. Episode 2 my beloved.)

James: You're such a fine young lady, why do you only hang out with boys? Is one of them your boyfriend?
Chloe: No, girls just scare me.
James: Because they can be mean?
Chloe: Because they can be beautiful.
James:
Chloe:
Chloe: So anyway, your daughter is real cute-
James: Get out of my house, please.

Chloe: What seems to be the problem?
Rachel: I don’t know exactly, but it all started when I found out my real mom is a druggie and my father never loved me
Chloe: I meant with the car
Rachel: Oh, it makes a beeping sound every time I slam my head into the steering wheel

Why James Amber should not have been a DA in Before the Storm
Okay. Thanks to a bit of a back-and-forth discussion with my good friend @opossum-knight I've been drawn back into the BtS silliness and how Deck Nine failed to think things through. This time I'm going to focus on a different failing, and that is James Amber's job choice and why it fails to make sense.
For those who've not played, be aware I am going to be revealing several plot points here so if you want to play the game without knowing some reveals... skip this commentary. But the game's been out more than long enough that I don't think it much of a problem.
Okay. So we have two separate depictions of the Amber family in LiS and BtS. In LiS we just know that according to Chloe, Rachel's parents have bought into the assumption Rachel ran away from home and no longer are looking for her. She vanished a couple months before the school year ended, and there was nothing to suggest Rachel finished the school year early.
Tumblr media
In fact, Rachel's school record has this in the police report at the very bottom: "…but once again Arcadia Bay covers up another secret." (In short, the police are covering up missing persons of women who "vanish" or commit suicide after Mark Jefferson and Nathan Prescott are done with them.) However, it was Rachel's interest in international law which likely had them decide Rachel's dad was a lawyer... and then had him be a DA.
The problem with this is if the daughter of a district attorney had gone missing, the police would not just handwave this away. Further, it is most unlikely Jefferson would have dared gone after her, just in case his patronage with Sean Prescott was not enough to protect him. It also fails to explain why Rachel's parents are still searching for her in the William Lives timeline, where Rachel and alt-Chloe never ended up hanging out.
(Now there is a simple explanation as to why Rachel's parents would be disinterested in looking for their daughter, and that's in the prime timeline Rachel's bisexuality is established and visible. It is entirely possible that Rachel is closeted in the William Lives timeline (or even that Rachel is unaware she's bi). Or in other words, Rachel's parents were possibly homophobic and wanted nothing to do with a gay daughter.)
If you were sticking with the Damon Merrick storyline (which honestly is not a very good story) then having James Amber be a pharmacist, doctor, or dentist still allows the drug trade to be part of the story - with Merrick pushing Amber to give him prescription drugs to resell. His going after Rachel's bio mom is to give James Amber extra "incentive" to give him the prescriptions or drugs he is demanding, even as James Amber resists for any of a number of reasons. (Maybe he is actually legit and talking to the cops.)
Tumblr media
But as I've mentioned before, there is a far better way to craft a BtS story in-canon, and that's Chloe running away, coming across Rachel and her parents camping, and starts a romance with Rachel while her homophobic father ends up calling the cops to deal with the runaway while not realizing they're moving to the same town Chloe lives.
No matter how we crafted BtS, however, the simple truth is this: there is little reason to have Rachel's dad be a District Attorney, and plenty of reason why this fails given the existing canon. The only way BtS can exist in its current form is if BtS is in fact an alternate reality setting, and that the police keep actively searching for the daughter of the District Attorney (and perhaps even catch Jefferson before the start of the events of Life is Strange).

"if you die, I'm alone."
"probably because of my secret, very unconscious desire to get Wilson into my bedroom."
"you were thinking about Wilson while we were having sex? That's so cool, me too!"
"I thought your Wilson fetish was over?"
"I need you to tell me that you love me."
"you have everything you need right here. We both do."
"I just want to enjoy my last five months with family and friends." "Friends or friend?"
"what does that mean? You're done with Wilson? As long as Wilson is alive, you're not done with Wilson."
"I want a threesome." "Shouldn't we try a twosome first?"
"I'm dead, Wilson. How do you want to spend your last five months?"

Dreamcatcher Chptr. 21
That night, the Amber family had fallen into complete turmoil.
Words could not express how much James self-loathed himself for doing what he did, but it didn't justify the fact that his ignorance caused the downfall of Rachel's 'perfect' life. Not only that, but his marriage was in shambles. For Rose to hear the news herself, it broke her heart to hear what devious secrets her husband had hidden. Honestly was something to keep a relationship going, but this was obviously the last straw.
By the time Rachel's parents left the room, the two adults shared a heated argument elsewhere while Clark did everything he could to make his girlfriend feel better. Clark sat down on her bed and continued to hold the brunette in his arms.
"Why?" Rachel muttered with a fragile voice.
This caught him off guard yet left him unsurprised to the fact that she was completely devastated with how her life turned out.
"Why did he do this? To me? To... to my mom?"
"Life is just... life is shit. It can be a real dirt bag and put you through your ups and downs, but what matters is having something worth fighting for. You can't give up home when it seems the whole world's turned against you, or if things have gone tits up since the very beginning. Find a light in the darkness that'll lead you to freedom."
She didn't establish eye contact with him and stared blankly at the end of the bed. Rachel let out a sigh of contempt and shook her head before she buried her face in her forearms to bawl her eyes out.
Clark shushed her and rubbed her back before he kissed the top of her head and hummed a song he hand in mind, which in turn became vocal through the speaker in Clark's phone.
The music took quick effect on Rachel as shortly after the music started playing, her sobbing quietened down. Clark raised his hand up to her face and wiped away the tears off her cheeks. It only did half the job, to which Rachel rubbed her eyes with her fingers to get rid of the uncomfortable sensation around her eyelids. Her head tilted and laid on his shoulder as they listened to the song play.
"Clark?" She whispered with steady breathing.
"Yes, Rach?"
Slowly, the beeline honey brown-haired girl craned her head around to look and make eye contact with him. Her eyes searched endlessly for the love she truly deserved without realising it was right there beside her the whole time. Her mouth opened to speak but no words came out, only incoherent mumbles and choked words. So Rachel paused and took a second to compose herself before she got her thoughts together and transmitted her thoughts out aloud from her lips.
"Don't leave me..."
Hearing this shattered Clark's heart. It wasn't just the fact that Rachel was asking him to stay by her side, but the manner in which she spoke made it all the more depressing; thinking about the troubled life she'd lived was only miserable enough that she couldn't be her true self. And she would have had no true self had it not been for Clark Price.
"Never. Not even until the stars die will I just fade away into the cosmos. I'll be your shooting star, baby." Clark whispered delicately as he cupped her cheeks.
His thumb brushed along her cheekbone, allowing the smoothness of her skin to delight his sense of touch as well as feeling the warmth radiate from her. Their faces inched closer. As they did, they could feel each other's breath hit their faces as their lips connected, sending shots of electricity to jolt through them as they dived into the kiss more passionately. The kiss deepened so much that their tongues began to explore the other's mouth by every inch until they would have to withdraw to capture air into their lungs.
Toned beeps were unsettled during the kiss. Until the two star-crossed lovers pulled out of the kiss, Rachel's heart monitor simmered down at the same time her heart beat did. Neither bothered to look at the equipment as they then laid back down and snuggled in bed to sleep the night off since it was already night time.
It was Sunday morning in the Arcadia Bay Public Hospital.
After a long sleep, both Clark and Rachel awoke rejuvenated and ready for another day of loafing. However, it was in Clark's good intention to provide distractions to make the day pass faster.
Closely, he observed her as she slept. A smile crept up on his face as happy thoughts reigned supreme, only for a limited time as reality was what they would have to face upon her return to school.
That was when Clark hear his phone go off before checking it for messages.
From: SIS How is Rachel doing?
It warmed his heart to see his sister showing her support and care for both him and Rachel. Slowly but surely, Rachel would treat Rachel like family.
To: SIS She's getting there.
To: SIS Just sleeping now.
To: SIS Does mom know I'm at the hospital?
From: SIS Not yet, but she will soon. Do you want me to tell her now?
To: SIS Nah. Don't bother. I'll tell her myself.
From: SIS Mm 'kay.
As soon as Clark put his phone away, he immediately detected something was off. To where Rachel laid, the brunette was awake and staring at him, taking in every detail of his face yet again as if it was the last thing she was going to see.
When Rachel found her boyfriend string back at her, a grin tugged at the corners of her lips to show a big smile that she had reserved just for him.
"Hi," she mumbled, still sleepy from the amount of rest she'd been getting being cooped up in a hospital for over a day.
Reciprocating her expression, Clark leaned in and puckered his lips, planting a soft kiss between her eyebrows.
"How's your arm?"
"Mm. A little better." Rachel replied throatily from all the crying she'd been doing.
"Hey. There are some things I want to go grab. Is there anything you want from your place while I'm gone?"
There wasn't much for Rachel to think about. She could think of some things but none that would really keep her distracted as Clark did. So she gave him the list of items she wanted him to bring her.
To: IRISH Pick me up at the hospital?
Clark waited for a response. In the meantime, he climbed out of bed and tidied himself up before leaving the room. On his way out, he got a message and checked it as he walked down the hall from Rachel's room.
From: IRISH Sure thing mate.
From: IRISH Twenty minutes tops.
Not even a minute of waiting and Clark had already walked out of the lobby, into the parking lot. It wasn't much of a wait before Mick rocked up on the scene to help his mate in need. Clark entered his mate's car and was driven off, following Clark's instructions.
"Nice scar, dude. Rachel dig it?" Mick asked casually, starting a conversation to break the silence excluding the radio playing punk rock alternative.
Clark looked over at his mate and smiled faintly, exchanging glances every now and then between him and the open road.
There was a faint rattle in the glove compartment while other things on the dash made their own separate noise, making it difficult to differentiate between each individual noise. The bobble-head deserved its own recognition of Einstein which was stuck to the dash by strawberry-flavoured bubble-gum, right next to the round-framed sunglasses which was also kept in place by the bit of gum.
It was out of pure boredom that Clark opened the glove compartment. Inside were a packet of cigarettes, a flask and an empty box of medicine.
"Yeah. Guess you can say that. Least she'll rock a hectic scar on her bicep." Clark replied shortly. It wasn't very clear that he was in the mood to converse, but he was willing to do so in order to keep his mate happy and off his back.
"Aye. True that. So when's she gettin' outta hospital?"
"Depends on her healing process. Doctors said if she heals fast enough, she might be out before Wednesday. But she's expected to be out by Friday."
"Must be real hard on you: seeing her like this. To feel so completely helpless that your soulmate's in agony and you can't do anything to relieve the pain... What do ya need to get for her anyway?"
"Just... a few things. Some books and a couple other stuff you wouldn't get."
"But it'll help keep Rachel distracted, right?"
"Right. I wouldn't leave her side unless it was necessary."
"And this is an exception?"
Clark paused, hesitating his answer.
"Just the one time. We'll be quick, so long as we don't get held up along the way."
As they continually drove along the main road, Clark patiently waited before giving his friend directions to Rachel's house - it came into question as to whether that was where she would live much longer because of how shattered the family's relationship was when the truth came into the light.
Traffic was light so the boys driving along the road was quick yet careless. Mick had no proper concern for the dangerous speed he was doing to get Clark to his destination and back. Subtly, Clark gripped his seat with his right hand as their speed slowly but gradually increased, to the point that Clark managed to convince himself to speak up about his mate's erratic driving.
"What? We're fine! I'm just doin' a few over the speed limit." Mick scoffed reassuringly.
"How much is a few?!" Clark shouted, now making his worries visible.
Mick tore his eyes off the road but for a second to check the odometer when the moment he looked back up on the road there was a doe in the middle of their lane with an incoming car in the other.
"LOOK OUT!!"
"HOLY FUCKIN' SHI-"
Mick swerved off the road, causing them to drive sporadically on the uneven road. The steering became impossible to correct that the two boys ended up spinning out of control. Once the car settled, Clark and Mick exerted madly at how they were almost in an accident.
Faintly, the radio still played music in spite of how things just turned out for the pair. They were both in shock of what happened that Mick very slowly reached his arm over to the radio to turn it off so that they could have silence.
"Y-Y-You okay?"
"Y-Y-Y-Y-Yeah... You?"
"I-I'm never doing that again."
"Y-Y-Yeah. No fuckin' sh-sh-shit! L-Let's just go t-to Rachel's already."
Mick nodded his head and gently pushed his foot on the accelerator with good intent to adhere to the speed limit like he was supposed to.
When they arrived outside the Amber residency, Clark got out of the car slowly but steadily by taking gentle steps up to the house. Upon recalling the location of the hidden key, Clark knelt down and lifted the mat up, identifying the key underneath. Suddenly, the front door clicked open and swung open.
Standing at the doorway was James Amber. The older man looked at him surprised but dismissed the thought of how he knew about the hidden key's location. Awkwardly, Clark jumped up to his feet and cleared his throat as he managed a forced smile towards James.
"Clark. What are you doing here?" James greeted him coldly.
"H-Hi, Mr Amber! I-I was just swinging by to collect some things for Rachel." Clark explained timidly, his voice came out with a slight tremble and struggle for calmness.
"You are not welcome here anymore. Hurry up and get out of here. I hope you're happy now... You've destroyed this family. Rachel could have been happy."
"You call lying to your daughter and drugging her mother the means of giving Rachel a happy life? She'd find out the truth eventually. You can't hide secrets forever."
James was visibly upset by this and folded his arms across his chest. Without another word spoken, he stood aside, allowing Clark to slip between him and the door to entered the foyer. Clark proceeded to walk upstairs towards Rachel's room.
Inside the room was as it was previously. Dark, morbid and scented with Rachel's favourite perfume. Given that he had a chance to explore her room briefly since Rachel found out that the strange woman was actually her birth mother, Clark found no need to pry around her stuff too much. He looked around at the stuff Rachel listed for him to collect and grabbed the things she'd asked for.
A couple books.
The star globe and the light.
Some hair dye and some other essentials.
Clark also searched for a bag to stow the items in before he left the room as it was and ventured downstairs to regroup with Mick. On his way out, Clark shut the door behind him and made his way to Mick's car so that they could return to the hospital, with the intent of grabbing food on their way back. With a fast-food restaurant on the way back, Clark allowed it and sat back and relaxed while music blared through.
While the two were having fun jamming it out to the music on the radio, they drove up to the fast-food restaurant, ordered their meals and ate on their way back to the hospital.
When the hospital came into sight, Clark readied himself to jump out of the car. He bid his friend goodbye before he got out of the car once it came to a halt in the front of the hospital. Clark swung the backpack on his shoulder and stared straight ahead as he heard Mick hit the accelerator and drove off.
Inside the lobby of the hospital, Clark casually strolled past and made his way to Rachel's room. The staff noticed him but paid no attention to him as he approached the door to Rachel's room and went inside. Even with the aroma of greasy food, it still didn't bother them that Clark was smuggling food into the hospital.
The brunette whose warm embrace he was keen to return to was laid on her back, with her eyes closed. Her eyes opened upon hearing the door clicked open. She rolled her head in the direction of the noise when a smile broke on her face. She was so delighted to see her boyfriend return.  Clark approached his girlfriend and gave her a kiss on her forehead and helped seat her upright before he settled.
"Hey babe. I got the stuff you asked for. Plus..." Clark purred as he sat down in the chair beside Rachel's bed and extracted everything inside.
"You got me a burger?" Rachel asked, sounding more dull than surprised.
"Yeah. Did you... not want one?"
"No, I... I mean, thank you. It's better than this hospital food, at least. What's that other stuff you got?"
"Just the books you ordered. Didn't know you were into Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf?"
In response, Rachel simply smiled at him when she noticed more contents inside her backpack - this was the same backpack she used once when she went to a Vortex Club party last year where Rachel was requested to supply alcohol despite the mandate stating no alcohol was permitted at the party.
"Hey. What's that you got there?"
"Nothing."
"Clark...?"
Clark shook his head dismissively and said nothing more about it, hoping to surprise his girlfriend later. Out of trust did she pass it off as nothing and accepted the burger Clark handed to her. He then put the books he collected for her on the nightstand and carried the bag with him into the bathroom.
By following the instructions of the items he'd brought with him, Clark occupied the bathroom for what would be a good two hours.
This made Rachel impatient for being left in the dark as to what he was hiding from her that would take so long. Many thoughts ran through her mind as to what he was doing that would take so long, but not a single thought actually considered that he was dying his hair royal blue in order to match the colour of her feather earring.
A few hours had passed and Rachel had decided she had enough.
The whole time she'd spent reading Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf?, the thought of what her boyfriend was up to lingered on her mind. It bothered her greatly that she didn't know what she was doing, but she knew that with just a bit more patience, she would soon find out.
By the time Clark finished up in the bathroom, Rachel was intrigued with the book she was reading that she was caught completely off guard when she noticed that her boyfriend had dyed his hair blue. He still had his t-shirt on, but with the towel wrapped around the back of his neck where some of the hair dye stained the towel he'd brought from her place.
"Tadaa." Clark sang as he stretched his arms out.
"Holy shit, your hair! It's so..."
It was obvious that Rachel was at a loss for words. She hadn't expected him to do something like that, but she'd be lying if she said she didn't approve of it.
It was rogue. Unique. Aspiring.
That was only the first step for the young couple to graffiti their bodies in a way their parents would never approve fully of.
Clark seated himself beside Rachel's hospital bed and scooched closer so she could have a feel of it herself. While the dye was only just freshly applied, Rachel didn't care if any of it got on her fingers when she stroked a bit of it.
"Badass?" Clark asked coyly.
"I was gonna say hot. But yeah, badass too. I wonder what gave you that idea?"
His cheeks flushed red as he broke eye contact and looked away to shrug his shoulders before meeting her glare. Out of the corner of his eye, she noticed her hand levitate towards his cheek to touch it. The warmth in the palm of her hand connected with the side of his face, bringing a sense of comfort to them both knowing that they were now in each others care once again. And soon thereafter, Rachel would be restored to her place at Blackwell to endure the remainder of her academic career.
