Amane is seemingly casually interested in his new friend..but will Ryuji feel the same. As casual turns into more.

Turtles Catches Up With Old GMMTV: SOTUS S and Our Skyy x SOTUS Edition
[What’s going on here? After joining Tumblr and discovering Thai BLs through KinnPorsche in 2022, I began watching GMMTV’s new offerings -- and realized that I had a lot of history to catch up on, to appreciate the more recent works that I was delving into. From tropes to BL frameworks, what we’re watching now hails from somewhere, and I’m learning about Thai BL's history through what I’m calling the Old GMMTV Challenge (OGMMTVC). Starting with recommendations from @absolutebl on their post regarding how GMMTV is correcting for its mistakes with its shows today, I’ve made an expansive list to get me through a condensed history of essential/classic/significant Thai BLs produced by GMMTV and many other BL studios. My watchlist, pasted below, lists what I’ve watched and what’s upcoming, along with the reviews I’ve written so far. Today, I’ll cover SOTUS S and Our Skyy x SOTUS, to close out this series and the KristSingto ship.]
Listen -- I did it to myself. All in the midst of my absolute INSANITY for Our Skyy 2 x Bad Buddy this week, and Our Skyy 2 x ATOTS next week. I did all this to myself! My mind’s mush.
For some reason, as I was scrolling through MDL last month, I thought my OGMMTVC watchlist wasn’t complete if I didn’t finish the rest of the series of GMMTV’s first HUGE BL in SOTUS (2016). A lot of my priorities regarding learning about the history of Thai BLs have changed over the course of this project, and the watchlist has definitely expanded from @absolutebl‘s original three suggested BLs to watch to understand the old GMMTV brand of BLs. And, as I’m inching ever closer to He’s Coming To Me (2019) -- I realized that there would be quite the gap in my seeing the development of Singto Prachaya as an actor from when he first premiered in SOTUS to HCTM. I felt that, in order to be REALLY prepared to become a SUPER FAN of HCTM -- I needed to freshen up on my Singto.
What I wanted to see was -- could he save the franchise at all, simply by way of his acting? As ABL Sensei noted about the original SOTUS -- it was problematic enough to be emblematic of a style of BL that GMMTV is now moving away from.
From that point of view? I’m honestly VERY glad I finished out SOTUS as a franchise. I think it was hugely important for the OGMMTVC project, and for me to understand what GMMTV was experimenting with, and how the channel slowly developed with more expertise in making BLs and/or queer media over the course of the last eight years, particularly under the production eye of Aof Noppharnach as he took more control of GMMTV’s BL steering wheel. It was worth it for me to take the pain of dealing with Krist’s acting again, and as many of the WONDERFUL Tumblr family noted for me: SOTUS S and Our Skyy x SOTUS were by far easier to watch than SOTUS.
So -- I’m making a few assumptions, since I don’t concretely know the detailed history -- by the time SOTUS S comes out, KristSingto are an established pair. Fans are likely chomping for more (and spending more), and SOTUS S comes through as a means of continuing Arthit and Kongpob’s relationship.
Fam, all of you were right. Our Skyy x SOTUS was WAY, WAY better than either of the seasons of SOTUS.
SOTUS S was fine. It reminded me of the Korean period dramas I used to watch as a young woman when they first started airing in America, ones that I’d watch with my mom. Lots of, like, sitting at long tables with your trusted war advisors on how to take over the Goryeo dynasties. SOTUS S was like a Japanese work drama, where like, the STORY of the WORK is PART of the POINT of the drama (maybe a little like Step By Step right now? I think it’s always hard to create DRAMA around, like, a WORK PROJECT, but anyway. Minor quibble.).
Whatever. As with the original SOTUS: it took fucking FOREVER in SOTUS S to get to the meat of the story of where the relationship was landing with Arthit and Kong.
But let me give Krist a little credit. After Arthit got used to Kong being an intern at the company -- I will say that I felt Krist, in his acting, loosened up a bit. A little wink here, an actual smile there. Instead of playing defense at the baseline, Arthit/Krist started hitting some shots at the net. (I see he’s “loosening up” even more right now in Be My Favorite... yeah? I dunno, I ain’t watchin’ that.)
Did I feel like Krist’s betterment in acting was in response to Singto’s acting? Not... quite. Not yet.
Once I watched Our Skyy x SOTUS, I realized a couple of things. The style of workshopping that GMMTV BL actors go through NOW, CLEARLY didn’t exist at the time of SOTUS. I felt like SOTUS and SOTUS S WERE the workshop for these two.
And then Our Skyy premieres, and I’m like -- OHHHHHHHHHH. OH! Krist kinda has it in him to pull out some real acting!
The Our Skyy episode also had 1) great structure, 2) a CONCISE and CRISP storyline, and 3) SHARP dialogue. It didn’t seem like these guys needed to IMPROV their emotions, the way that Krist DID, and seemed to STRUGGLE to do in the first two seasons.
But most importantly, for me -- in relation to what I said about Singto earlier -- I realized something about Singto. Like I said in my review of the original SOTUS -- Krist could not catch what Singto was throwing.
I think in SOTUS S, Singto... didn’t give up, per se. He just STILL didn’t HAVE the means by which to ACT RESPONSIVELY to someone who WASN’T RESPONDING to him. I didn’t see Singto grow, at all, in his role in SOTUS S. He was still the same seme automaton. And there’s a problem with that, I think. I could not see, AGAIN, for the LIFE of me, why Kong would be ATTRACTED to Arthit -- EVEN IF Krist were playing Arthit as a very held-back, stuffy type. Kong/Singto radiated with energy and a POTENTIAL of love -- and watching them interact in SOTUS S was like watching the emanation of an incorrect math equation.
I was surprised. I thought I’d see more development, more flexibility, more comfort in the role of Kong. Both Arthit and Kong seemed to be playing their robotic TYPES.
Not so in Our Skyy. Finally. The guys seemed looser. I felt this most greatly after Kong cooked Arthit breakfast, and Arthit scoffs (as usual) away from Kong’s affections. And Singto/Kong opens his arms for a hug.
FINALLY. Wordless communication! IT WAS GREAT. And the message of the hug -- we don’t know if this will be our last hug, so let’s hug and make it count -- it was a great and meaningful message.
If I had to get through SOTUS S to get to that moment, and to see these two be able to share well-acted emotion by the time of Our Skyy -- I would argue, for my sake and sanity, that it was worth it for this project. Because that ship/pair was so important for early BL. I had to think that there HAD to be some art, AT SOME POINT, between those two, and we got just a taste in Our Skyy.
I want to think, and to say, that for GMMTV -- that may have been a bit of a breakthrough moment, that Our Skyy x SOTUS episode. Many of those other first Our Skyy moments, like Puppy Honey and Kiss The Series/Kiss Me Again -- those were appendages to existing series where the BL aspect was secondary. I think that wordless communication, the emotion and the hug from Kong and Arthit, mayyyyybe potentially showed that, hey -- we can create a bit of a foundation of emotional art here, with this format.
Some quick other thoughts on SOTUS S and Our Skyy before I move on:
1) I liked Cherry. Yes -- a femme-ish character set up for the laughs. But Cherry wasn’t designed nearly as problematically as the femme characters of Love Sick. I think, by adding Cherry, that the writers of SOTUS were beginning to acknowledge that their brand of BL NEEDED to step its toe into queer recognition -- especially considering that other shows that had aired around the time of SOTUS (namely Make It Right) dealt with queerness so head on.
2) WHERE WAS NAMMON IN OUR SKYY??? Come awn! He and Guy Sivakorn had AMAZING chemistry! (Guy Sivakorn, y’all, great GMMTV stable guy!)
3) I REALLY LOVED SEEING KONG’S CLASSMATES in Our Skyy, even for a second. All the homies with their flashy hair. I felt total nostalgia for all of them during SOTUS S and Our Skyy.
4) Durian’s outing of Kong and Arthit was bullshit. THAT was problematic AF. Judgy and shady.
5) Oh, speaking of non-continued couples: no Earth and Tod in Our Skyy. Dang. I thought Earth would come around. (The whole SOTUS franchise REALLY left couples hanging. Remember Prem and Wad?? Wtf! Graveyard of potential!)
Anyway. Listen. I don’t really consider this review over until I watch He’s Coming To Me. I now need to see Singto in a pairing with an actor who ACTS RESPONSIVELY, who is able to CATCH what Singto is PRESENTING.
I will admit Krist DRASTICALLY improved, even from SOTUS S to Our Skyy.
BUT. I now know, from Make It Right and Bad Buddy, that few actors can hold like Ohm Pawat in BLs (but I’ve yet to get familiar with Gun, and I can’t wait to do some talent comparisons between the gold stars of GMMTV soon enough).
And that’s what I’m looking forward to watching -- the SUBVERSION of a huge ship for the SAKE of getting two damn talented actors together for what I know will be a fucking gem of a show in HCTM. I cannot wait to get to it, and it’ll be really soon.
[Alright! On to Love By Chance, with darling Perth Tanapon and my first ride with Saint Suppakong. I’ve mentioned this here and there, but many thanks to the WONDERFUL @bengiyo for filling me in on all the deets of the break-up of the PerthSaint ship. As I get closer to He’s Coming To Me, understanding Perth’s and Ohm’s reputations -- especially as I close out watching Double Savage this week, and understanding how their ship subversions affected their careers in and out of BLs -- is super helpful context.
Here’s the list as it stands. As I said last week, I’ll definitely be a touch delayed with LBC, as I’ll be likely watching and rewatching Our Skyy 2 x BBS (x ATOTS??) and Our Skyy 2 x ATOTS (x BBS??!?) this week and next. BUT STILL, WE PLUG ALONG! And one tiny little change: because this project is so inspired by my passion for the art and the history of Bad Buddy, I’m including a full BBS and Our Skyy 2 x BBS rewatch as a means of honoring this whole undertaking.
As always, I’ll take any input or recommendations from all of you LOVELY family!
1) Love Sick and Love Sick 2 (2014 and 2015) (review here) 2) Make It Right (2016) (review here) 3) SOTUS (2016-2017) (review here) 4) Make It Right 2 (2017) (review here) 5) Together With Me (2017) (review here) 6) SOTUS S/Our Skyy x SOTUS (2017-2018) 7) Love By Chance (2018) (watching) 8) Kiss Me Again: PeteKao cuts (2018) 9) He’s Coming To Me (2019) 10) Dark Blue Kiss (2019) 11) TharnType (2019) 12) Senior Secret Love: Puppy Honey (BL cuts) (2016 and 2017) (I’m watching this out of order just to get familiar with OffGun before Theory of Love -- will likely not review) 13) Theory of Love (2019) 14) Dew the Movie (2019) (not an official part of the OGMMTVC watchlist, but I want to watch this in chronological order with everything else) 15) Until We Meet Again (2019-2020) 16) 2gether (2020) 17) Still 2gether (2020) 18) I Told Sunset About You (2020) 19) Manner of Death (2020-2021) (not a true BL, but a MaxTul queer/gay romance set within a genre-based show that likely influenced Not Me and KinnPorsche) 20) A Tale of Thousand Stars (2021) (review here) 21) I Promised You the Moon (2021) 22) Not Me (2021-2022) 23) Bad Buddy (2021-2022) (thesis here) 24) Bad Buddy (2021-2022) and Our Skyy 2 x BBS (2023) OGMMTVC Rewatch 25) Secret Crush On You (2022) [watching for Cheewin’s trajectory of studying queer joy from Make It Right (high school), to SCOY (college), to Bed Friend (working adults)] 26) KinnPorsche (2022) (tag here) 27) The Eclipse (2022) (tag here) 28) My School President (2022-2023) 29) Moonlight Chicken (2023) (tag here) 30) Bed Friend (2023) (tag here) (Cheewin’s latest show, depicting a queer joy journey among working adults)]

Growth of omegaverse in commercial BL
As with most things in Japanese BL, omegaverse first boomed in doujin works around 2014-15 period and then spread to commercial works. 2015-16 was a pivotal year for child-rearing and omegaverse BL with the publication of Welcome Home (ただいま、おかえり Tadaima, Okaeri byIchikawa Ichi.
It has been serialized in Fusion Product's Omegaverse Project anthology magazine since November 2015 and has been collected in four tankōbon volumes [first volume was published in 2016]. The series is published in English by Manga Club. An anime television series adaptation produced by Studio Deen is set to premiere in April 2024. (source: wikipedia)
Tumblr media
In 2022, by May, 80 works had been published. Previous year, there was a dip in number of new omegaverse works published after rapid increase since 2019. In 2020, 8 times more works were published with omegaverse setting compared to when it debuted.
How does this compare to the total number of BL publications?
Tumblr media
The proportion of omegaverse continues to be small compared to the total. In 2020, there were 160 omegaverse works out of nearly 3500 BL works. One out of every 20 BL works belongs to omegaverse. This is fairly significant for a single setting / sub-genre.
Year-wise trends and corresponding popular pairings
[Total number of works only indicate how many iterations of that pairing showed up in the market, it doesn’t indicate how well they did commercially or popularity-wise. Popularity is discussed below.]
2015 – Diversification Era
Tumblr media
α×Ω 9
β×Ω 3
α×α 1
Other×Ω 1
2015 was the year when omegaverse works began to appear in the commercial BL market, emerging out of doujin BL boom. While α×Ω pairing was obviously the first kind of pairing to become popular, β×Ω pairing wasn’t too far behind.
Omegaverse is not limited to α×Ω pairing alone. The wide range of possibilities omegaverse offered was explored early on. It can be said that the [pairing] diversity is one of the reasons for its explosive popularity.
There seems to be high affinity between BL and omegaverse, as both share unique worldviews and settings while being highly versatile, ranging from fantasy to modern day works.
It was the period when omegaverse was being tested as a setting based off on how far narratives can go without breaking the premise that Ω is the uke and α is the seme.
Overall tendency was to highlight the discrimination against Ω and the preferential treatment towards α in an easy-to-understand manner. Omegaverse as a setting was in its infancy. It was probably thought that exaggeration [of key characteristics] would popularize omegaverse.
Notable works:
Romantic Joutou
sayonara koibito matakite tomodachi
2016 – Early Odo Reversal Era
Tumblr media
α×Ω 13
α×β 2
Ω×α 1
β×Ω 2
β×α 2
α×α 1
Ω×Ω 1
Most highly rated work of that year kashikomarimashita destiny - Devotion to death is an α×β work. Seemingly, breaking the rules can be considered a standard practice in the omegaverse BL.
As omegaverse become more popular, many a masterpiece such as Kuruinakunowa Boku No Ban and Tadaima Okaeri were created.
Compared to previous year, 2016 was witness to many epoch-making works such as Pendulum - Beastman Omegaverse, which married beastman setting with omegaverse setting.
Another notable work is Boku No High Spec Kareshisama that had a path-breaking Ω seme. It also had a β×α side pairing.
The works published in 2016 pretty much covered every possible combination in the Omegaverse.
2017 - Serious Works Era
Tumblr media
α×Ω 17
α×α 1
Ω×Ω 1
α×β 1
β×Ω 3
Ω×α 1
In 2017, the omegaverse became even more popular than in 2016.
Continuing from the previous year, omegaverse kept exploring various possibilities. It was in 2017 that omegaverse established itself as a new genre that goes beyond the framework of special settings.
The first volume of Akabeko's Shonen no Kyoukai series, published that year, brought omegaverse close to the real world. It was around that time the setting of [secondary] gender tests being conducted at schools, which later became commonplace, first appeared. Consequently, compared to the previous years, more realistic and serious works were produced.
It’s no longer about “poor Ω and alpha who has it all”! The number of characters that went beyond typical omegaverse attributes increased, and genders combinations also diversified.
There was no set standard marking this period. The foundation laid in the years before finally paid off and the sub-genre flourished and spread.
2018 Omegaverse Boom Period
Tumblr media
α×Ω 20
α×α 1
β×Ω 1
Other×α 1
α×Other 1
In 2018, the number of Omegaverse works has increased explosively! Total number of omegaverse BL works produced that year was more double that of previous year. A variety of settings and fetishes emerged due to an overwhelming increase in the number of artists.
While α×Ω continues to enjoy steady popularity Megumi To Tsugumi at the top, other types of pairing were also increasingly well received due to the appeal of particular works.
The aforementioned Megumi to Tsugumi and Omae No Koi Wa Ore No Mono had Ω who did not conform to the ‘cute and protected’ image instead were bigger and badder than your average α.
Tumblr media
Omae No Koi Wa Ore No Mono
The number of works that had gap between gender attributes and individual characteristics increased. Settings also diversified. The buds of the previous year have bloomed, including beastmen, threesomes, and inc3st!
Around this time, works published the previous year or earlier got sequels and CD dramas. It also became a trend to have spin-offs of α x Ω works to have other pairings...
2019 Back-to-roots Era
Tumblr media
α × Ω 23
Ω×Ω 1
β×Ω 2
α×α 3
α×β 1
The total number of omegaverse works in 2019 surpassed previous year count by nearly 80 books. In addition to the continuation of popular works from the previous year, it was no longer unusual to see α×α pairing or β-seme.
Marriage themed work Yukyu Omega was published.
The first volume of the child-rearing omegaverse series Kiraide Isasete was published in 2019.
It was the year that the omegaverse wave entered a new stage, just like the lives of the characters in them. That year also saw the publication of Ousama Alpha To Puppy Love that explored the themes of child-rearing and childbirth, which were relatively untouched in other BL settings prior to the omegaverse boom.
2020 Odo Omegaverse Era
Tumblr media
α × Ω 23
β×Ω 1
The total amount of work increased yet again in 2020. The popularity enjoyed by α×Ω pairing was stronger than ever. Many of the popular series featured α×Ω pairing too. Of course, there are some works featuring other pairings, but the omegaverse odo (royal road progression) is still strong.
Even with α×Ω pairing, the attributes that were once like a chasm between characters started to come together「圧倒的攻め×圧倒的受け」「精神的にはほぼ攻め×攻め」.
The fact that some of the most popular works from the past have continued churning out newer volumes suggests that the omegaverse genre in BL will continue to grow!
There have also been some bold stories with enigmatic developments, such as Rebirth, reasserting the endless possibilities of the omegaverse.
2021 – Meta-omegaverse Era
Tumblr media
α × Ω 17
β×Ω 1
Ω×α 1
In the year 2021 too α×Ω pair reigns in popularity. Works with a strong storyline continued to be well-received, continuing from the previous year. Works with a strong meta element, such as Kamisamananka Shinjinai Bokua No Eden was published that year.
Boku No Tsugai Ha Thoroughbred Omega explored whether or not to disclose gender – bringing in the choice not to tell. This thought-provoking addition to omegaverse is probably a reflection of reality.
2020 also saw more works that places emphasize on different scenarios and have less explicit content than in the past. In recent years, various other verses have sprouted from omegaverse such as Dom/Sub verse.
2022
Tumblr media
α × Ω 18
α × β 2
α×Others 1
The omegaverse has established itself as a major [sub]genre. It is expected that α × Ω pairing will continue to dominate!
Fusion with new genres is steadily progressing! The Mibu No Tsugai series is a time travel BL that combined omegaverse with historical setting (late Edo period). It is clear that the omegaverse setting has become so well-established that addition of elements and setting do not affect accessibility of the subgenre.
Other notable works:
Omega Ni Dake Ha Naritakunai – isekai into an omegaverse manga
Kuzu, Omega ni Tensei by Saitou Kuzu – isekai into omegaverse
Omegaverse is easily malleable and combines well with other sub-genres and settings.

Honest Elevator Pitch for History 3: Make Our Day's Count
AKA the BL THAT SHALL NOT BE NAMED
The nerdiest tsundere struggling orphan introvert meets the premier himbo slack-wit jock of everyone’s dreams who accidentally bullies him and then goes into a spiral of regret that turns into obsession and then deep pining love and adoration. Another one of those it’s a high school setting but the actors make no case for it. This is remarkably perfectly yaoi with a sunshine/tsundere pairing. It’s high heat and very sexy featuring some of the best chemistry ever put on screen. THEN they arbitrarily kill the nerd character and we get a whole hour of our beloved himbo suffering and alone for the REST OF HIS LIFE. Because why not dwell on that?
Taiwanese BL (and even Japanese BL) has been apologizing for this one ever since.

Getting to know your BL mutuals - 2022 Edition
Simple, answer the questions. @ some people. Include the tag 'g2ky BL mutuals 2022' on your post so we can find everyone's answers!
What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?
Oh it was the japanese bl's!They are getting better!
-Kabe koji : it's a mixture of bl, anime, mangá.... and it has so much soul !!! Wish I could watch several seasons of this.
-Eternal yesterday - eien no kino: it's a rollercoaster of emotions. The beauty of life and the bittersweet of grief that speaks to me in a sacred level 😭 I almost drop this one because of the pain, but i get that this pain its fucking necessary in the end, there's no way out. It breaks u and u have to put it together...I can almost figure out how this will end. 😭🖤
Old Fashion Cupcake: it's such a heart warming story to witness, with the sweet flavor of love!!! oh my heart beats so fast for those two!
...and Taiwan never disappoints me and got me some little miracle called My Tooth Your Love ❤ The intensity a serie gives with such a idiot name 😉 the pain of trauma, and going truth it to gain love back!
What has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
Check out was a fucking mess!!! I waited a lot for this?!!!?
Love Mechanics had so much potential and a beautiful, talented couple but it was so meh!😣
There was a lot of bl's that I dropped this year. 😝 cause we getting more and more bl's as the years pass but the quality is not the best.
less is more.
What has been your favourite BL this year?
It has to be Kinnporsche!!!
I waited more than a year for this! I was there when they announce it,when I read the shit translation of the novel and fell in love with Kinn, when the pilot trailer premiered, when they canceled it! when it was reborn from the ashes (thanks Mile <3) and so goes on.
And it turn out to be a masterpice to me!(even with some disappointments).
A deal breaker in the industry!!! All my wait was worth of seeing my dear porsche on screen, my beloved amazing Kinn gain life (MAFIA GAY LIFE!!!)
-Love In The Air : was a great experience! Mame is always there, and always will be 😁 Do what?
-Triage : my beloved time loop bl ❤ what a journey!!!
Especial mentions to : Not Me (my dear, amazing, epic!!! Not words enough to explain it!), My Tooth Your Love, Love Stage (my sweetheart!), Semantic Error (of course!), Cutie Pie (it deserve some love), Plus & Minus, Big Dragon (could be better),Vice Versa, Blueming (😭).
Favourite BL couples (not just of 2022)?
I start with....
Kinn x Porsche ❤, Gao Shi De x Zhou Shu Yi ( Always), Sean x White, Payu x Rain, LeoFiat, PatPran, TanBunn
...
If you had to suggest a BL for someone what would it be?
Kinnporsche.
But to someone that is starting bl's it would be : Bad Buddy , We Best Love (❤), Lovely Writer, Cherry Magic...
-korean? Light on Me, My Sweet Dear, You Make me Dance...
-Thai at it's best? Manner of Death, TharnType(fuck yeah!)...
-Japanese? Kieta Hatsukoi, Old Fashion Cupcake, Utsukushii Kare.
-Taiwan Bl is almost always a must see!
-Ready to crush your soul with feelings? I Told Sunset About You.
What's your non-BL favourite for this year?
-Kei×Yaku: Abunai Aibou ❤
Almost a BL. One phrase : Japanese Gay/Bisexual Mafia!
Give it a chance if you like japanese bl! Hoping with all my heart for a second season.
-Extraordinary Attorney Woo was really great!!! It took me a while to start this, but was a great surprise!
and just to mention some wester media it will be:
-The bastard son & the devil himself. (on netflix)
Based in a series of books (no, don't read it 😝), the serie it's a whole more charismatic than the books, great characters and amazing effects. The bonding with yourself and with others in a magical divided world. The cast is ✌🏻❤.

BL Elitists & Snobbery in Fandom
Disclaimer: My favorite BLs of all time err on the "mature" side, harassing actors is bad, fanservice can be bad, shipping can be toxic, and I too am critical of certain aspects of fandom. Nobody's perfect but let's all try to at least be nice and better than we were yesterday.
Since the premiere of KinnPorsche, there's been an uptick in elitism in the BL fandom. Fans of shows such as KinnPorsche, Bad Buddy, Semantic Error, and other BLs with "mature" themes, BLs produced in East Asia, and/or BLs which cast seasoned actors, increasingly bad-mouth fans of shows like Cutie Pie and others which either exist as pure fluff or take a more trope-y approach to BL storytelling. As a watcher of your ITSAYs and Tonhon Chonlatee's alike, it's a strange sight.
I was already burnt out by all the pandering straights who only enjoy the finest of Taiwanese and Korean BLs and scold the fan service-laden Thai BLs. But it has reached a new level that's, quite frankly, exhausting. It's like, we get it, you want to see the gritty realism of a gay relationship in modern East Asia, you want the glossy production and the seasoned actors in Japan--and the "no-nonsense anti-shipping/fan service" culture in Korean fandoms.... At least that's what you say. But all I see is a need to feel superior and a clear xenophobia that just goes unaddressed. Let's talk about this in parts.
1. Stanning a "mature" BL doesn't make you a better person. Also, saying you have superior taste for stanning ITSAY and Gameboys because "it's LGBT, not BL" is not helpful to anyone.
Let's start here. I will die on the hill that BL is part of LGBT media. I get that people traditionally associate the former with fantastical depictions of gay relationships but I posit this: if Twilight can be classified as a heterosexual romance, with all its blatantly unrealistic and even toxic elements, why can't Dark Blue Kiss or Fish Upon the Sky be LGBT romances? Why must all gay media be about the struggle of being gay? Why can't LGBT-identifying people have a break from the overwhelmingly rough reality we face? It's like saying POC should be limited to films about facing structural racism and borderline modern-day caste systems. As if we can't enjoy an escape from reality like Aladdin or Black Panther or whatever it is that allows us to have all the things western white people have in their media. For some of us, BLs and GLs, however unrealistic they can get, is a fantasy we enjoy. Let those who want it, have it.
2. Trashing Thai BLs just seems like xenophobia at best and color/racial superiority complexes at worst.
Honestly, when people brag about how "Korea is coming for the BL industry" and how superior Korean BLs are, despite how homophobic, boring, and straight up scarce many Korean BLs and BL actors are, it gives "Kpop rappers are better than American rappers" vibes. Like, I have seen people PRAISE Korean and Japanese live-action BLs as superior to anything out of Thailand (and claim ITSAY to be an exception--of course) when the reality of it is is that Thailand is just far more prolific and has been in the live-action game since day 1. Now, I'm not gonna lie, Korea has it's foot on the Yaoi manhwa genre's neck, but that hasn't translated very well into live-action. Moreover, when asked why they prefer Korean BLs overall, these stans can never give a rational answer. But common themes I've noticed include how attracted they are to the MCs, how ~realistic they are (AN: they're not, see: Color Rush, Cherry Blossoms After Winter, and other big names out of Korea), or just how they're "refreshing" as compared with Thai BLs because they're ~above fan service and things like that.
But increasingly, I'm finding that the biggest KBL stans are also kpop stans who just prefer the Korean idol look where everybody is limited to some variation of pale skin, small faces, and eurocentric features. And before anyone tries to come for me, just look at kpop idols, watch documentaries about the toxic single beauty standard and culture, or just talk to your Korean friends (like I do!) The beauty standard is highly specific and everyone must conform to it lest they be ostracized for being "too dark", "looking SEA" (which, why is this an insult?), or "looking poor/old". I'm not saying this to demonize anybody's type, but it feels strange (again, borderline xenophobic) when people who have definitely fetishized that standard reject excellent media on the basis of it. These same people seem to exclusively enjoy BLs from Northeast Asia and/or the white west and wouldn't even give Thai, Filipino, or Black LGBT stories a chance. Again, to each their own but it's the false sense of superiority for me.
As for criticizing the fan service culture, these same fans try to justify their clearly baseless attacks on non-East Asian/white media by saying that, for example, the Thai industry is toxic. But the reality is, Japanese and Korean media practically invented OTT gay fanservice between the straights. Just look at the way kpop and jpop idols are with each other. And while it isn't as OTT with BL actors as it is with the idols, that's likely largely because of how much of a niche BL is in those places compared to the pop idols. There's also something to be said for the fact that LGBTQ+ people, while definitely still discriminated against, are much more visible in places like Thailand. I may be going out on a limb here but I propose that if live-action BLs were as popular in Korea and Japan as they are in Thailand, we'd see a hell of a lot more OTT fan service. And with the recent success of Semantic Error, I can definitely see it happening. You already see it with Taiwanese BLs (MaxHao (however real or not real), anyone?)
3. Letting us know that you're ~not like the other girls, and "don't fetishize gay relationships" is not only blatantly false but also mischaracterizes a lot of the situation.
Now the elephant in the room are those who still enjoy Thai BLs but are so loud about preferring the 1000 Stars' and Bad Buddy's because "there's no seme-uke dynamic and I like that because it makes the characters more real" or "the actors are really good friends behind the scenes and I stan the friendship, not the possible romantic relationship" or, even worse, the "it's none of my business what the actors do outside of the show and I don't ship real people, so I'm better than everyone else who does because that shows my allyship and how I don't even see sexuality." It's giving ACAB, BLM, yet screaming over Black voices vibes.
Now, I never want to trash true allies and I totally agree that it's important not to blur fiction and reality and that we need at least some realistic depictions of gay relationships. But when the hets start going on and on about it whilst at the same time only enjoying BL like it's a dirty secret and assuming actors are straight (but criticizing any notion that an actor may not be), and going on about how everything is fan service so they're just ~above it all anyway...it gives overcompensating for what you know to probably be a fetish within yourself. It gives "I enjoy looking at two hot guys I wish I could fuck go at it and don't want to stop, so I'll pretend like I'm down for the cause, when in reality, I am very much just like the other girls" (girls used gender-neutrally here lol). I don't know, it just seems so fake to me.
And while I'm not saying I prefer delusional, toxic, shippers, there's something to be said for not pretending to be better when, in fact, you aren't. Why can't you consume BL the same way you consume straight romances (or even GLs)? Why does it have to be some activist political thing when you do it? Like, obviously don't fetishize MLM relationships but, speaking as a minority in many senses of the word, the way to normalize non-traditional relationships isn't to constantly make a big deal out of how you think they should operate in media when the reality is, as long as no one is being harmed, diverse representation is the easiest and best way to present any group of individuals. Like, not all Asians know martial arts and are super smart, not all Black people are artistically and athletically gifted, not all white people are wealthy and powerful. Likewise, not all LGBTQ+ people live the same lifestyle. Some are heteronormative. Some are femme in femme/femme relationships. Some have a lot of sex, some don't have sex at all. Why can't we show all these perspectives and allow people to like what they like, again, and I stress, as long as no one is being harmed?
Like, yes, we should definitely not encourage delusional waanjais who give Gulf porn art of him and Mew, but, there's a happy medium where we can do away with harmful representations and actions toward marginalized groups but also celebrate their diversity and people's love of their stories. I just don't see why elitists have to act like they're above everyone else when they are really all in the same boat.
That said, I will still (playfully, of course) roast anyone who actually enjoys boring ass Check Out, because that shit is just horrible lmao. But the difference here is roasting someone's taste in media vs. acting like you're doing the community a favor by uplifting strong masc/masc, non-heteronormative, non fs-driven relationships. Like what you like, roast what you want to roast, just don't be pretentious about it as if you're taking some sort of political stance on it.
I understand I too may fall victim to shaming certain behaviors, but the key is in noticing you're doing it and reeling yourself in. Life is about happy mediums, not extremes.
Anyway, that's just my take.

a year ago I watched the ghibli movie "Ocean Waves" (1993) and then watched a review about it right after on youtube.
In the review, the person says that if Ocean Waves actually had a plot twist and it ended up being BL and the mc's friend actually confessed to him on the beach that day, the movie would have turned out very similiar to another movie called "Blue Gate Crossing" (2002) which is wlw.
Well I decided today to watch this movie but couldn't find it in Russian sub or dub and decided to search it up on youtube because I vaguely (thought) I remembered the person saying it was on youtube with ENG subs.
I couldn't find it at first but did see a video of a full film called "Blue" (2002). Same movie, probably shortened the name to blue and that's it. I was skeptical whether or not it was actually the same but the movie turned out to be wlw and Japanese even though I swore it was Taiwanese or Thai. So it is the same movie.
Not. I realized that after finishing the whole movie and couldn't really see any similarities apart from a confession on the beach and thought that the youtuber was just overthinking.
Blue Gate Crossing is a Taiwanese film and I ended up watching a whole other movie, which surprisingly was pretty good and very aesthetic, the type of movie you'd watch on a lazy day, it did have a very fast pace though and a bit weird in places but nonetheless it was good. Just shocked at the coincidence of the similiar names, same premiere date and both being wlw and Asian movies.

Get to know me game: tag someone you want to get to know better!
Tagged by the lovely @thedaughterofkings ! Thanks for the tag :)
Three ships: Sterek, Wangxian, and Andreil/Pynch tie… ranking interchangeable based on mood.
First ship: Oh gosh… probably Sterek? The first fic in my AO3 history is Sterek back in 2014, but I was reading without an account for a while before that, so I can’t say it with 100% certainty. Sterek was the first ship to leave a lasting impression, anyway.
Last song: Odo, by Ado (I was listening to my “Pump Up” playlist 😁)
Last movie: Marry My Dead Body (Taiwanese movie (US NF); casually homophobic cop has to marry a dead man’s ghost for Plot Reasons, and then a mystery unfolds. Not a BL, but watching them go from enemies to friends and watching the cop learn to not be a dick was fun and kinda heartwarming (cw for two brief but very demeaning portrayals of fat people though). Next in the queue is Our 30-Minute Sessions… primarily because it has Mackenyu from the One Piece live action in it 🙈 (in a Japanese-speaking role too!), but it also just looks cute
Currently reading: (all the fic) I just finished the Tinkered Starsong trilogy by Gail Carriger (gays and kpop in space with aliens! very fun and all fairly quick reads). I just started I Don’t Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression for my own personal benefit, and then I think the next FUN book on my list is going to be Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yaros. All I know is it’s YA with dragon riding, so like. I’m already sold lol.
Currently watching: Gaya sa Pelikula (Like in the Movies, free on YT). Gay Filipino series; I’m only on episode 3 but so far I am enjoying it. Also watching Strange Planet, Ahsoka, and Star Trek: Lower Decks as they air, and Bob’s Burgers season 14 premiers tomorrow night so I am excited for that (that’s my comfort show haha). Next up is Pending Train.
Last thing I wrote: Uhhhh I’m not an author and I’ve never published anything, but in 2019 I was bodily possessed by a plot bunny and did write a VERY angsty 2.5k Sterek fic fragment involving Derek going to a supernatural BDSM brothel and meeting Stiles and realizing Kate had fucked him up way too much for this and that he was more lonely than horny *cue breakdown and a caring Stiles*… to this day the only fan thing I’ve ever written lol
Currently writing: Nothing! But my brother in law just finished writing his first actual book so I recently helped my sister bind it for him as a surprise! It was both our first times binding, but I was able to help out because I have experience typesetting and had bought binding supplies for my own use before (I still intend to bind The One-Body Problem by metisket eventually because I cannot put into words how much I love that fic)
Tagging: @mobeu , @moondal514 , @aredblush , (if y’all feel like it!) and anyone else who wants to do it :)

Sahara Sensei to Toki-kun Premiere Episode Commentary, For Fun
Starring April Aries Kizu Takumi and July Leo Hachimura Rintaro
Probably Not Worth a Watch- I thought the first few episodes had cemented my affection for this show, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It has failed to live up to my high expectations. I am often unamused or disinterested in comedy-dramas, romantic comedies, although I have seen a few Japanese comedy series that I felt were pretty humorous and enjoyed quite a bit. I find the comedy in Japanese entertainment, as well as in this series, to be relatable and fun. It can be a bit heavy-handed at times, which I found to be the case especially in the first episode, but as the series progressed the comedy tapered off. The show transitioned to a more dramatic/serious tone. Usually, I'd be okay with this turn, as I prefer more adult-themed BLs, but I'm missing the ridiculousness. With a significant age gap, the show's opted to curtail the romance and a proper relationship between the protagonists. I understand this decision, but I prefer my BLs to focus on the development and issues involving the couple or their potential. In the later episodes, it focused on supporting characters and storylines that I was uninterested in. So, I enjoyed the first few episodes but disappointed and disinterested in the second half of the series.
