A Song of Praise for God's Favor
1 O LORD, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things, even counsels of old, in faithfulness and truth.
2 For thou hast made of a city an heap; of a defenced city a ruin: a palace of strangers to be no city; it shall never be built.
3 Therefore shall the strong people glorify thee, the city of the terrible nations shall fear thee.
4 For thou hast been a strong hold to the poor, a strong hold to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.
5 As the heat in a dry place shalt thou bring down the noise of strangers; as the heat by the shadow of a cloud, the song of the terrible ones shall be brought low.
6 And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all peoples a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.
7 And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering that is cast over all peoples, and the veil that is spread over all nations.
8 He hath swallowed up death for ever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the reproach of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.
9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.
10 For in this mountain shall the hand of the LORD rest, and Moab shall be trodden down in his place, even as straw is trodden down in the water of the dunghill.
11 And he shall spread forth his hands in the midst thereof, as he that swimmeth spreadeth forth his hands to swim: and he shall lay low his pride together with the craft of his hands.
12 And the fortress of the high fort of thy walls hath he brought down, laid low, and brought to the ground, even to the dust. — Isaiah 25 | English Revised Version (ERVB) The English Revised Version of the Holy Bible is in the public domain. Isaiah 25
Praise to the Lord
25 Lord, you are my God;     I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness     you have done wonderful things,     things planned long ago. 2 You have made the city a heap of rubble,     the fortified town a ruin, the foreigners’ stronghold a city no more;     it will never be rebuilt. 3 Therefore strong peoples will honor you;     cities of ruthless nations will revere you. 4 You have been a refuge for the poor,     a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm     and a shade from the heat. For the breath of the ruthless     is like a storm driving against a wall 5     and like the heat of the desert. You silence the uproar of foreigners;     as heat is reduced by the shadow of a cloud,     so the song of the ruthless is stilled.
6 On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare     a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine—     the best of meats and the finest of wines. 7 On this mountain he will destroy     the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the sheet that covers all nations; 8     he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears     from all faces; he will remove his people’s disgrace     from all the earth. The Lord has spoken.
9 In that day they will say,
“Surely this is our God;     we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the Lord, we trusted in him;     let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”
10 The hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain;     but Moab will be trampled in their land     as straw is trampled down in the manure. 11 They will stretch out their hands in it,     as swimmers stretch out their hands to swim. God will bring down their pride     despite the cleverness[a] of their hands. 12 He will bring down your high fortified walls     and lay them low; he will bring them down to the ground,     to the very dust.
God loves all His people, but He will either cleanse or crush those who have strayed from His lovingkindness. He cleanses us from all unrighteousness and directs us toward Himself or the beauty of His ways. God delights in knowing us more intimately. He desires for all His people to be saved - but many are called, and few are chosen. God wants us to understand His character before He wants us to follow His precepts and laws. But He expects us to listen and obey regardless of the circumstances or our personal feelings, since the heart is wicked and deceptive. We may have been cut off or separated from God when sin entered the world, but Christ restored us to a loving relationship with God, bridging the gap between ourselves and Him. We should be aware of evildoers, but not so aware that we neglect God or stop praising and thanking Him in the process.

The Banquet
The first reading today again comes from the Prophet Isaiah. In yesterday’s post what has been, in times past, promised and announced, comes to fruition as the Promise One is depicted as ruling. In place of the kings from the line of David which proved to be faithless and fickle, in defiance of the empires such as Assyria, those verses describe a king in who ushers in a reign of safety and…

A Mountain of Good News (Isaiah 25:6-9)
Whenever healing and/or emancipation happen, it’s time for a celebration. To celebrate significant events, and ritualize them so we remember them, is wise and much needed.
On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples    a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines,    of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain    the shroud that is cast over all peoples,    the covering that is spread over all nations;    he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from…

Isaiah 25: When Tears Are Wiped Away
Jesus also spoke a number of times of a celebratory feast to be enjoyed with God. #MarriageoftheLamb #Isaiah25 #EveryTearWipedAway
The Lord’s Banquet On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples    a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines,    of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. Isaiah 25:6 (NRSV) Isaiah foresaw a rich banquet spread for the people of God on God’s holy mountain, much like the feast Moses and the seventy elders attended, and reminiscent of the Lord’s…

A Golden Treasury for the Children of God
Tumblr media
by Carl Heinrich von Bogatzky
Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean, wash me and I shall he whiter than snow. - Psalms 51:7
Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities; - Psalms 51:2
Though your sins, be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. - Isaiah 1:18
I have blotted out as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and as a cloud thy sins. Return unto me, for I have redeemed thee. - Isaiah 44:22
We must not keep away from Christ on account of our stumblings and manifold faults, if we will not come under the law again; but by humbling ourselves directly, we are to crave pardon in his blood, By delaying this, our case will be worse. But the sooner it is done, the sooner we shall be forgiven. The Lord not imputing those sins to us, which are sincerely repented of, our soul returns to its rest again. And instead of falling into carnal security (as some may think) it will rather strengthen our faith and make us more confident. Hasten, therefore, and come as soon and as well as thou canst. He will receive thee, if thou couldst but creep.
O Lord, I fall before thy face My only refuge is thy grace; No bleeding beast, nor flood, nor sea Can wash the dismal stain away.
Jesus, my God, thy blood alone, Has power sufficient to atone: Thy blood can make me white as snow; No Jewish types could cleanse me so.

Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: #18: The Black Phone (dir. Scott Derrickson)
Tumblr media
For those that don't know, Ethan Hawke might possibly be my favorite actor. He's a fascinating guy who shows a passion and a love for filmmaking that's palpable in his work. I also think that he's massively underrated as a horror actor, with top notch performances in both The Purge and Sinister (which was directed by Scott Derrickson, who directed this, as well). So needless to say I was beyond excited when I first saw the trailer for The Black Phone and saw that, not only was Hawke collaborating on another film with Derrickson, but that this time he'd be playing the villain. While Sinister might be a scarier film than this film, the story of the Black Phone is more fleshed out and robust. I will admit to a bias for Stephen King-esque stories, which this most certainly is (the short story this is based on was written by King's son, Joe Hill), but I think there is an objective quality to Black Phone that exists outside of that bias. Hawke is genuinely menacing as the antagonist of this film, and Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw don't disappoint, either, with McGraw in particular bringing a humor to some of the film's moments that is both unexpected and beneficial at the same time. The suspense and intensity of the film's more climactic moments are masterfully crafted and left me in a nervous ball in my theater seat. Everything about the Black Phone is just solid, quality thriller filmmaking, and it was an early addition to the list that clung to its spot for dear life. Currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Read my full review of The Black Phone here.
