A place for me

Over the weekend, there was a young man at one of the Masses. He was there with his family.

Because he was happy, he was making noises. Some were words, most of them weren’t. Sometimes he did it when everyone else was talking, sometimes not.

When he got too excited, his parents would calm him. By holding his hand. Or with a gentle arm around his shoulder. Watching him snuggle up, you could see how much they loved him.

And everyone else at that Mass?

No one was bothered by any of it. He was right where he belonged.

I have to admit I got a little choked up about it. Because of their love.

And because it took me back to a moment in my life when God showed me the truth. About the Church. And about myself.

When I was getting serious about joining the Catholic Church, I went to a lot of Masses. To figure things out, to watch what happened. But the one that really got to me was one where I payed attention to the people.

The people there ran the gamut. They were from all different places. Old and young. Singles and families. Pretty much everyone you could think of. But two people really stayed with me.

There was a man with cerebral palsy, who used a wheelchair to get around. What struck me about him was that he was…just part of everybody’s normal. No one was put off by his presence. Or bothered by his difficulty speaking or his difficulty moving. At Mass, he was just like everybody else.

But there was another man, who was slower than everyone else. At least in his speech. I don’t know why, but you could see that he struggled to form his words, and to get them out. Because of that, with the responses, he would finish saying them a word or two after everyone else. When it came longer things like the Gloria, he was finishing maybe six or eight words after everyone else.

Not only was no one bothered by this.

But there was something else going on. I didn’t catch it until the Our Father, during the Eucharistic Prayer.

The priest was waiting for him to finish. Not impatiently, but with this quiet smile.

Like it was just part of the prayer. And the two of them had all the time in the world.

It was in that moment that God put something in my heart.

And I knew, that if there was a place for them here, then maybe, just maybe, there was a place here for me too.
