Black Seminole tribal members of El Nacimiento de los Negros have celebrated their version of Juneteenth since the 1870s.
When Mexico outlawed slavery decades before the United States, thousands of Black Texans found a new route to freedom.
Their descendants meet in Coahuila, Mexico, every year for Juneteenth celebrations.
Just over 100 miles from the Texas-Mexico border, a small mountain town in Coahuila, Mexico, is preparing for their annual Juneteenth celebrations.
El Nacimiento de los Negros, translating to "Birth of the Blacks," is home to a community of Afro-Indigenous families that trace their roots back to the United States. Known as "Mascogos," the group are descendants of Black Seminoles who found a home in Mexico after fleeing slavery and the threat of slave catchers in the US.
Black Seminoles were formerly enslaved people who escaped the plantations they worked on and aligned themselves with the Indigenous Seminoles of Florida. The joined forces with the Indigenous tribes to fight the US in the Seminole Wars.
In the 1800s, many Black Seminoles were forced to relocate from places like Georgia and Florida to areas designated Indian Territory in Oklahoma. During that time, Black Seminole chief John Horse, who had both Indigenous and Black ancestry, led a group of people to Mexico, where slavery had already been outlawed. A group settled in El Nacimiento in 1852.

The Southern Underground Railroad
When the General Congress of the United Mexican States completely outlawed slavery in 1837, enslaved people in Texas had a viable route to freedom by going southward. Notably, in the 1936-1938 federal Slave Narrative project, emancipated freeman and San Antonio-born Felix Hayward remarked: "There wasn't no reason to run up north… All we had to do was to walk, but walk south, and we'd be free as soon as we crossed the Rio Grande." By 1849, African Americans began to make the journey into Mexico.
Experts estimate that up to 10,000 people crossed the border to Mexico to secure their freedom and escape slavery, creating what is known as the Southern Underground Railroad.
Contrary to the Union's agreement to return runaway slaves under the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, Mexican law provided freedom for escaped slaves once they touched Mexican soil. Many of those escaped enslaved people, alongside Indigenous groups of Mexico, helped defend the Northern Mexican border in exchange for acres of land in Coahuila.

Celebrating Juneteenth in Mexico
Juneteenth marks the official end of slavery on June 19th, 1865 when 250,000 Black people in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom by executive decree. Historians estimate that as some Black Seminoles traveled back and forth from El Nacimiento to Brackettville, Texas, Juneteenth celebrations spread to Mexico as early as the 1870s.
For more than 100 years, Mascogos in El Nacimiento have celebrated what they call "Dia de los Negros," or "Day of the Blacks," on June 19th. Many Black Seminole descendants still embark on the pilgrimage from parts of Texas to El Nacimiento to celebrate the day. Traditional cuisine includes a sweet potato bread called tetapún and slow-cooked asado pork. The dishes combine Indigenous, Black, and Mexican cultural inspirations.
After generations in northern Mexico, many members of the Black Seminoles in El Nacimiento strictly speak Spanish. However, the hymns passed down from African American descendants are still sung in English on Dia de los Negros, including "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "This Little Light of Mine."
As more Black Seminole descendants are leaving El Nacimiento to find work in Texas or other parts of Mexico, many Mascogos are worried their culture is waning.
Tumblr media
To prioritize preservation, members have established the Museo Comunitario Tribu Negros Mascogos for local art, a hotel, a restaurant, and secured federal funding for community gardens. In 2017, the governor of Coahuila declared the Mascogo tribe as Indigenous people of the northern Mexican state.
As Juneteenth was officially recognized as a US federal holiday in 2021, tribal members are planning to promote cultural tourism as a source of support and revitalization for the enduring town, and prevailing traditions, of El Nacimiento de los Negros.

the culture of the rocky mountains is hard for me to define since ive basically never left. but i feel like our weird ways of coping w loneliness & isolation definitely play a part.
we love being seen as honest, straight-forward, cowboy-type people but we also love to bluff knowledge we dont have and exaggerate negative aspects of stories as part of a neverending trauma competition. google check anything an older person says and theyll never look you in the eye again.
related, i feel like folks from east & west coast do eye contact differently from what I'm used to, but i can't put my finger on all what exactly.
also just like? i feel like we're the least passionate people in the US. lack of motivation is just intrinsic to mountain living. any club i join or event i attend, there's like 2 passionate people and 3-300 people who came bc there was nothing better to do.
any opinions or thoughts on this

Splash mountain shouldn't be rethemed to go with Princess and the Frog. If they were absolutely determined to make a Tiana themed ride at Disney world, they should have built a restaurant with a connected river ride like the Mexico pavilion at Epcot.
Splash mountain's retheming should have been based on Brother Bear.
And as you climb the part before the big drop you get the northern lights spooling out around you, like cave paintings suddenly coming to life along the walls, some probably appropriate mystical build-up music, before the older brother eagle shows up right at the crest, then you plunge down into the salmon run and get some more delightful Phil Collins music.
Just saying, we could have gotten two cool rides and a sweet Cajun sit down restaurant, instead of one ride that doesn't make much sense build wise.

Rainbow Scarab (Phanaeus vindex)
Habitat & Distribution
Can occupy a range of habitats; most commonly found in pastures and grasslands
Found throughout the continental United States east of the Rocky Mountain Range, down to northern Mexico
Physical Description
Length: 11-22 millimeters (0.4-0.9 inches)
The body is round and stocky, and males have a large horn on their heads
Both males and females have iridescent, primarily green metallic shells, though the shells of females are more dull than males
Adults have wings that are hidden beneath the hard shell when not in use
Behaviour
Rainbow scarabs feed almost exclusively on dung, particularly that of large herbivorous mammals
Adults build extensive subterranean tunnels below food sources, and bury excrement for their larvae to feed on
Unlike other dung beetles, the rainbow scarab shapes faecal matter into pear-shaped balls
Rainbow scarabs are mostly solitary, and males will battle each other to defend their territories
Main predators are birds of prey, including the burrowing owl
Key Advantages
Though they mostly stay on the ground, rainbow scarabs are able to fly over short distances
The irridescent shell may confuse predators

Travelling the world with Klaus:
When Klaus had promised to take you around the world, well you thought it was joke. A way to get you to go out with him.
And then when you finally agreed to go on a date with him, he began planning all your trips.
You weren’t exactly expecting a plane ride to Italy when he asked if you wanted to go out for pasta. “Klaus…why are we at the airport?” “Well you didn’t expect store bought did you?”
Once you fell asleep in your bed and woke up in his arms in the middle of Mexico. “How did you get me on the plane??” “I didn’t want to wake you when in such a peaceful state”
That time you ran out of cheese so he booked to go to France. “you know this isn’t what I meant” “Just put your belt on so we can take off, love”
He always makes sure to pack a lot of film for your camera. After the Mexico incident where he didn’t pack anything…including your phones…and you complained that you had not proof of you going-expect for the tan and the new wardrobe- he learnt to be fully prepared for the full tourist experience
Thankfully he is your guide, he’s been everywhere a hundred times and made sure to know everything possible to give you the best possible time.
The Louvre and the Hermitage Museum were particularly important to both of you. Klaus had been unbelievably nervous to show you, his words tumbled from his lips as he attempted to give history to the pieces. And when you noticed a few of his own paintings hung up and him trying to usher you away as his cheeks lit up, you couldn’t help the feeling of awe that you got. He was truly something else.
Another key highlight to your adventures was just sitting in the sun.
Lead down on your front in a little bikini while his hands massage sunscreen into your back.
Having your own infinity pool where you watch the sunset together. His lips on your neck as the moon rises, the stars lighting up the sky as his fingers slide the straps down your shoulders.
He’s taken you on cruises, helped you swim with dolphins, watched in admiration as you fed the stay cats and dogs in Thailand, sit patiently while you get your hair braided and styled, taken you dancing to teach you how the different cultures do it, carried you up a mountain and then panicked as you half skied/half fell back down it.
Bringing you to see the Northern Lights with you lead against his chest, hands in his as you both remained in a moments of utter bliss.
You having to hold him up as he tries to ice skate without killing himself and everyone else.
Trying to get him to put his hand out with the deer food in it without flinching when the animal licks his hand. “I don’t like it” “If you do it, I promise to do whatever you want later”
Having an entire book of blackmail worthy photos of Klaus.
Him having to do a full 360 before doing anything in fear of the camera catching him.
Him keeping his sketchbook present at all times to capture your beauty in every country of the world.
It’s just a dream come true.

The Apache are a group of culturally related Native American tribes in the Southwestern United States, which include the Chiricahua, Jicarilla, Lipan, Mescalero, Mimbreño, Ndendahe (Bedonkohe or Mogollon and Nednhi or Carrizaleño and Janero), Salinero, Plains (Kataka or Semat or "Kiowa-Apache") and Western Apache (Aravaipa, Pinaleño, Coyotero, Tonto). Distant cousins of the Apache are the Navajo, with whom they share the Southern Athabaskan languages. There are Apache communities in Oklahoma and Texas, and reservations in Arizona and New Mexico. Apache people have moved throughout the United States and elsewhere, including urban centers. The Apache Nations are politically autonomous, speak several different languages, and have distinct cultures. Historically, the Apache homelands have consisted of high mountains, sheltered and watered valleys, deep canyons, deserts, and the southern Great Plains, including areas in what is now Eastern Arizona, Northern Mexico (Sonora and Chihuahua) and New Mexico, West Texas, and Southern Colorado. These areas are collectively known as Apacheria. The Apache tribes fought the invading Spanish and Mexican peoples for centuries. The first Apache raids on Sonora appear to have taken place during the late 17th century. In 19th-century confrontations during the American-Indian wars, the U.S. Army found the Apache to be fierce warriors and skillful strategists.

CoD The Other Good Guys Bear! Edition
What if the rest of the good guys in call of duty were bears? Part 2 - see Part 1 for 141 as bears
More bear facts! Cause bears are truly the best! 🐻💯
Alejandro: Mexican Grizzly Bear*
Ursus arctos nelsoni - now Ursus arctos horribilis
Tumblr media
*depiction of what a mexican grizzly bear may have looked like alive
A now extinct subspecies of the grizzly bear that once inhabited northern Mexico. Due to its predation on cattle farms, they were considered pests and hunted by farmers. By the 1960s there were less than 30 individuals remaining. In 1974 the last known individual was shot in Sonora.
It was smaller than grizzly bears from the United states and Canada, and its colouration was said to range from a pale yellow to greyish-white with a darker undertone, though some individuals were described to be darker and reddish brown.
Due to its silvery fur, it was called 'el olso plateado' (the silvery bear) in Spanish, though it's name in the Ópatas language (an indigenous Mexican people's) was 'pissini'.
Rudy: Spectacled Bear "Andean Bear"
Tremarctos ornatus
Tumblr media
The last remaining short-faced bear, native to the Andes Mountains in northern and western South America. Though all bears are omnivores, the spectacled bear has a mostly herbivorous diet with only 5-7% of their diet being meat.
The bear is named after it's distinctive eye markings, though not all spectacled bears may have such markings. Individuals can have highly variable fur patterns making it relatively easy to distinguish from one another.
It's short face and broad snout is thought to be an adaptation to a carnivorous diet despite it's herbivorous preferences.
Paddington Bear is said to be a Spectacled Bear from Peru.
Farah: Asian Black Bear "Moon Bear"
Ursus thibetanus
Tumblr media
A medium sized bear native to Asia and highly adapted to arboreal life. It can be found in parts of Korea, China, Japan, eastern Russia, the Himalayas, southeastern Iran and northern India. It is listed as vulnerable due to deforestation and poaching for its body parts (used in traditional medicines).
The name 'moon bear' is given due to its distinctive creamy white cresent fur patch, though in some individuals it is "V" shaped. It has a powerful upper body stronger than it's lower limbs and are known to be the most bipedal of bears.
It has a reputation for extreme aggression despite their reclusive nature and there have been documented reports of unprovoked attacks. They are said to be more aggressive than the Eurasian Brown Bears that may cohabit the same areas and the American Black Bear.
Alex: American Black Bear
Ursus americanus
Tumblr media
Alongside the Brown Bear, it is one of the only Bear species not threatened with extinction.
Despite living in North America, it is more closely related to the Asian Black Bear and Sun Bear than Grizzly Bears (North American Brown Bears) and Polar Bears. It's ancestors are thought to have split off from the Sun Bear.
Black Bears are distinguished from Grizzly Bears who may cohabit the same area, with their longer tall ears, straight face profile, shorter claws and lack of distinctive hump.
Teddy bears, Winnie-the-Pooh, and Smokey Bear are all inspired by the American Black Bear.
Nikolai: Polar Bear
Ursus maritimus
Tumblr media
A large bear native to the Arctic. It is closely related to the Brown Bear and can hybridise with them though this is rare and not often seen. (See Grolar Bears)
They are the most carnivorous of all bear species (hypercarnivores), specialising in hunting seals through ambush attacks. Polar Bears are usually solitary but can be found in groups on land. They can form stable 'alliances' based on dominance hierarchies outside of breeding seasons with the largest males at the top.
It's common name was given in 1771, and was previously referred to as 'white bear', 'ice bear', 'sea bear', 'Greenland bear' in 13th - 18th century Europe. The Netsilik cultures (Inuit) named it 'nanook' and have several additional different names for them depending on sex and age of the polar bear.
Laswell: Kodiak Bear "Kodiak/Alaskan Brown Bear"
Ursus arctos middendorffi
Tumblr media
Named after it's habitation of the Kodiak Archipelago in southwest Alaska, the Kodiak bear is the largest subspecies of Brown Bear, with some individuals comparable to the Polar Bear in size.
An island bear, it is 1.5-2x larger than it's mainland cousins the grizzly bear, though physically and physiologically, the two bears are very similar.
Due to its tendancy to feed in dense groups, it has thought to have developed more complex social behaviours (in comparison to mainland grizzly bears) to minimise infighting/fatalities via both verbal/ body posturing and social structures.

Ngl one of my favorite hcs of California is that he has a scar down his back due to the San Andreas Fault and that he (and Alaska since they’re earthquake bear buddies) have stretch marks cuz of all their fault lines
my rants of Alaska’s and California’s history
Tumblr media
Ok so Alaska was just starting to be felt out by outsiders throughout the 1700s but in the 1800s, Alaska—which was being directed largely by the Russian American Company (I disliked the RAC for various actions they did against Alaska Natives, but that’s for another time) Alaska branched out to start trading with California and Hawai’i, one of Alaska’s delivery’s to Hawai’i was around 500 tons of ice. Before California even separated from Mexico, Mexico had officially recognized Alaska as their own thing. I don’t remember if hawai’i did or not tho.
Fort Ross is a well known port for example, that one is a link between the two states; and Alaska traded mostly otter furs with California — but Alaska traded with California more than Hawai’i to keep afloat
Then, when the Good Friday Earthquake hit Alaska in 1964, 131 died in all, 12 in California, and 5 in Oregon
Also, when Alaska had all those gold rushes and whatnot—most of the people there were from California! However Alaska is still plentiful with gold, here you can straight up just start gold panning, it’s an attraction to some places
(when I was younger I visited a small town for my dad to work a job, and a lean old man that dressed like a cowboy ngl— that was gold panning, taught me to gold pan! I didn’t get anything ofc but he gave me a small vial of gold he found himself, really nice guy :> i remember him well)
I’m sure there’s more but for some reason my brain just isn’t working
Oh I just remembered this one, Alaska before his mountains grew, used to have identical weather to California! I’m not sure if SoCal or Northern Cal tho
another thing I just remembered is that Alaska gained statehood cuz hawai’i was gonna so Alaskans were like yeah ok if they can we can

August 5, 2023 - Fan-tailed Warbler (Basileuterus lachrymosus) Found from northern Mexico south to northwest Nicaragua in foothill and lower mountain forests, these warblers are occasionally seen in parts of the southwestern United States. Sometimes joining mixed-species flocks outside of the breeding season, they eat insects and other invertebrates, plucking their prey from foliage and rocks on or near the ground. They often follow army ant swarms to capture fleeing insects and have also been seen foraging with armadillos. Their nests are open cups built from dry leaves, grasses, and pine needles on the ground, often concealed in leaf litter.
